I?ll have to read up on that! I remember seeing that ages ago.

I remember reading about that! Always thought of it but never got around to it. Heck, I have an M56 VC sitting on my garage shelf for the past 2 years haha. Kinda sadOh man, sorry to hear. Had to deal with the same thing with my father as well - ER, chemo, now to senior home. Sucks since I'm the only child and live on a different coast.
When I used Mobil 1 I used 0W40 european car formula. Nowadays I just buy Rotella T6 by the case (3x1 gallon) from Amazon and it's $66 when on sale... Pretty good deal if you ask me!

Beautiful pieces.
Sorry about your mom's circumstances, hope she's stable and has the help she needs. It can be a lot dealing with aging folks (I'm in that boat too).
As for oil, I also use M1 because it's readily available at Walmart and reasonably priced. I usually go with 0w-40, but any of them should be fine (5w30, 5w40, 0w40, Euro formula, extended, etc).
As for the oil consumption, I'm lucky my car doesn't burn a drop. The previous owner did a great job with shorter oil change intervals which I think kept the internals free of buildup. From what I read, many of the cars that did the factory extended oil change intervals (up to 15k miles) ended up losing oil due to the clogged up oil-control rings.
If I had that problem I would consider trying this regimen on the next oil change: Any good synthetic oil (M1, Pennzoil, Valvoline, Shell, etc) and a quart of the HPL Engine Cleaner oil. Follow their instructions (I believe, an oil filter change at 1000 miles and then a filter and complete oil change at 3000 miles). It dissolves a lot of the gunk build up, the oil comes out blacker than usual (if that makes any sense).
And then follow it with some Valvoline Restore and Protect 5w30 for a couple oil changes at 5000 mile intervals.
My brother had a slight oil consumption problem (1 quart every 2-3k miles) in his Toyota, and now magically it doesn't after the HPL cleaner oil and Valvoline R&P.
After 3-4 oil changes (I usually go 5k mile intervals), much of the gunk should be cleared up, switch back to any oil you prefer. Freeing the oil-control rings from built up gunk is key.
Also, ensure your oil separator hoses are free from cracks and the system is vacuum leak-free.
Yeah, it is definitely a trial and my wife and I aren?t spring chickens exactly either.
Thanks for the insight!!! I?ll check that out. I?ve seen a lot about the Valvoline oil lately. Seems to work really well!
My oil change was 14k for the first one back when I didn?t know any better. 2nd one was 28k. After that just about 7500 or 5000 miles after that.
