how does something like this compare or stand up against the newer iterations that come out year after year such as the 2016, 17 and 18 versions etc...

I guess it comes down to preference. The newer cars are faster and have their improvements but they are also larger in size. I prefer the 997 Porsches for their size and styling. To me the interior looks more along the lines of the traditional 911's compared to the 991 models. Not saying that the 991's are bad because they are not but I much prefer the older styling cues that my 997 has compared to the current 991 series... With that said, I think the 997s stand up quite well against the 991's although they may be slower but it's not all about how fast you can go...
