When autocrossing, or driving on a track...you have to be focused so much on the course ahead...you don't really know where the position of the wheel is.
It sounds crazy, but you can't focus exactly where the wheel position is. Add on the fact that you're driving on the border of grip and no grip, and the car is sliding...you have no clue where "straight" is.
So, the yellow tape is a bright indicator that attracts your eyes when you're driving ever so slightly so you know where straight is.
Get it?
Multiple times last auto-x I had no clue where my wheels were at. So hopefully this helps
