I had to do a non voluntary differential swap after mine failed on the interstate (at only 140K! WTF, right?). Turns out that the diff is the same as any E-46 M/T diff, but a flange swap is mandatory to make it link up to the ZHP output axles. If you don't want to do a flange swap, you have to replace form the hub up. Steve Wheeler in Lake City FL did the work on that and he did a fantastic job.
Anyways, I just put my two cents in since I saw you were talking about your diff.
Today, I did a transmission fluid change to Redline D4 ATF on my 2003 ZHP 6 spd m/t. I also upgraded to magnetic drain and fill plugs. I instantly noticed somewhat smoother shifting and faster synchro spin-ups.
The plugs I used were "M18X1.5X12 = BMW CAR, LATE TRANSMISSIONS, STANDARD" from dimple, http://www.drainplugmagnets.com/
They were about 1/4" shorter in length than the OE plugs, but the threads matched up perfectly. They also included 4 extra crush washers. Costs, $30 each.
I found that the torque spec for almost every transmission is 37 ft-lbs, but for 6 spd transmissions, it's 26.

Hope that all helps people who plan on doing the same projects.
Special thanks to Evan who sat in the back of the car and watched me finish up then drove it after!
Impressions:
Slop down 85% (total guess). It's a lot tighter to the point where the slop is acceptable - it's no gated shifter - even some new cars have more play in their shifters.
Shifts are notchier and more direct.
Downward throws (1-2, 3-4 etc) are noticeably shorter, but the upward throws aren't too much different.
Totally worth it. I'm very happy with it so far.
Got my DICE MediaBridge installed today. It went pretty well. I'll do a write up later after I have some time to use it more.
(Does anybody know how to shuffle tracks on a USB thumb drive?)

Washed, waxed and went to a rather large euro meet. Some guy pointed at my car and said, "wow it's a E36 wagon, pretty rare". I lol'd pretty hard..
Saw a awesome M3CSL clone, 3.0CS, Benz 600 grosser, McLaren MPC, amongst other nice cars. Pics to come!
