This is an evening of looking at the "problem" and about ten minutes of trimming plastic and metal heat sink material not needed
Removed a very dirty nasty looking air filter that came with the AFE intake on the car. It was the oil-version and replaced it with the dry AFE filter.
No clue how many miles were on the oil filter but by the looks of it it was alot and probably the original filter that came with the intake.
