great, now you just have to convince the other 99.99999999999% of the human population that it ISN'T because they really aren't Nazis. lol good luck with that one
...or because of the Bavarian flag.

The roundel is not patterned after the propeller. That's a myth.
Here is a video that BMW put out:

Always picking up good info on this forum!

No worries, big fella. That propeller myth has been out there for about 80 years.
I still respect you as a person Dane :biggrin

My dumb side is taking over on this one. :) After watching the video, I can't "clearly see" how the logo was developed from the RAP logo. I see a horse on one logo and what resembles a propeller on the other. What am I missing? It explains why the border and letters are the way they are but it would be difficult to convince me otherwise that the middle is a spinning propeller. :dunno
The middle is not a propeller. So, you are correct. The logo from BMW is just a quadrant with the Bavarian national colors.
Mmmm....
Well, now I'm questioning all kinds of things I accepted as truth and am rapidly losing the will to live. Wait, I still have a cocktail to finish. Damn, that was close.
Cocktails save another life. Yay :)
I guess now someone is going to tell me that Santa isn't real...

I always thought it was the propeller too... whats RAPP?
Because a Z is on the front cover I believe you ;)
I watched the video. Rapp was the engine company that BMW formed from.
Yes. Rapp made airplane engines. Karl Rapp's contract was eventually terminated. With Karl Rapp now gone, the company needed to rename itself. The company changed its name to Bayerische Motorenwerke.
Rapp's logo had a black horse on it. BMW scrapped that. However, BMW did retain some of the characteristics of the Rapp logo. One difference, though, is that BMW put the Bavarian national colors on the logo (in place of the horse). But BMW did arrange its letters in the same orientation as Rapp.
More about Rapp Motorenwerke here.
Another article on BMW's logo (2010 piece from NY Times): http://wheels.blogs.nytimes.com/2010...n-from-planes/
i can't recall the exact issue, but there was a great review of various BMW books in Roundel - the BMW CCA magazine. It mentioned one of the flaws of the book in this thread being the perpetuation of the propeller myth. sure makes a great story, though!
there was a review of some bmw books in our chapter newsletter recently - some interesting titles out there.....
