it happens... i did this last year. "well, if i'm already IN there and have the subframe out..." etc, etc...i can justify it (ha) by saying that i'll never have to replace it again. and since i plan to keep this car until i can afford an F80 M3... that should be a good long while.
i think it's your rings. the catch can/PCV setup will help seal them with the increased vacuum.
