    Nikon D90 with grip
    Nikon 50 1.8D
    Nikon 24-85 3.5-4.5G
    Nikon 80-200D

Better build quality, 80% of the focus speed, razor sharp, and rich colors. The high aperture capabilities of this lens are incredible and you can save a large portion of the cost, if you are willing to sacrifice 10mm on the short end of the lense.
    +1

I find that it focuses plenty fast enough on my D90. You can find them used for significantly less than either of the 70-200s, and the lens is lighter and smaller than the 70-200s. I don't have the need for VR as I use the lens with high shutter speeds for sports/daylight shooting. One thing that I will disagree is the comment about better build quality. It is indeed great, but the 70-200s have weather sealing (for what it is worth) and don't have the A/M focus ring that I have heard sometimes breaks.

Not to blow this thread up from it's original purpose... but since there are so many Nikon shooters in there, what made you guys choose Nikon over Canon (or others I suppose)? Was it those clever and witty TV spots Ashton Kutcher does for them?

For me it had a lot to do with Casey living in San Diego. He is helping me learn photography. He shoots with Nikon. He vouched for Nikon. I didn't see many commercials for Canon or Nikon. I figure they're both excellent companies. Can't go wrong with either. The fact that Casey shoots Nikon was the difference for me.

I've found personal recommendations are usually how it goes for people who take it seriously (or want to at least).

I have and always will say, go with the camera that feels best in your hands. Go to a camera store and touch equipment, navigate menus, and handle the tool. This is a precision tool, if it does not "feel" good in your hands, you will be less likely to use it.

This is what made me go nikon. I couldn't navigate canon easy at all. Nikon felt over simplified for me. For a starting photographer going straight to manual. That's something I needed

I have my super duper 8MP dual flash Droid X lol.

On a more serious note, I hope to have a Nikon or Canon (~$900) in the near future.

T3i is perfect in that range.
