Removing the manifolds isn't too hard. Been down that road a few weeks ago.

Exhaust manifolds need to come off for what? You can do the starter from underneath without too much hassle.

Starter is a tight fit but removing exhaust manifolds won't help at all as they're on opposite sides of the engine. Removing intake manifold makes it easier to get to the starter, so I hear--I replaced my starter without removing either manifold. There is a good DIY for this in the DIY section. It did take me a lot of time though, and I worked on it from both above and below. Most do the starter just from above or just from below.

The VCG and OFHG are not critical--they're annoying but they don't reduce the reliability of the car or risk leaving you stranded, as long as you check the oil level every few weeks.

This is what it could take to change out that starter.

Should I bail or hold on to our 06 330Cic

Whatever makes the misses happy and feel safe. I certainly think this car can be brought to that state with a bit of maintenance.

Joop replaced his starter in a parking lot. Though he is Superman, I'm not scared of this job.
