If I am going to purchase all-season tires, it most likely will be one of those. However it just hard to justify that money on an all-season when a summer tire majority of the time is better at a lesser price. I think I paid under $600 for the Bridgestone Potenza S04 and they are great but totally useless in the winter.

Going to tackle cleaning the brakes today. Yesterday a weird noise appeared which sounded like a worn brake pads. Upon inspection, I have lots of material still left. But the caliper slider pins seemed dry and there was a ton of brake dust everywhere. Hopefully cleaning everything and putting grease in the appropriate spots will get rid of the noise.

Also my Euro corners have shipped.

If it does not go away, I will just end up getting new front rotors and new pads. Last brake job I put on new pads on the old rotors and did not resurface them.

You still have an extra pair of BMW performance rotors right? lol

Inspection complete on the front brakes. Took the pads out, no strange wear on them. Wire brushed and cleaned the calipers. Pistons move freely and boots are in good condition. Put some super lube on the slider bolts and put everything back together.

Basically everything looks normal so not sure what the strange faint noise is from. Maybe the dust shield was too close to the rotor on that side so I bent it away from the rotor. Going to drive it tomorrow and see if its gone and then tackle the rear brakes.

Didn't wash the car since I got it back from paint. Pictures with a simple point and shoot late in the evening after work.

Ordered chrome bulbs for the corners and marker lights as well since the orange reflects alot in them.

Today I took the zhp on a road trip to DC. Went to see the cherry blossom festival but the trees were not fully bloomed. Kinda disappointed but the car performed great. Only thing to note is that it's suffering from burnt bowls. Getting worse and worse.

Only poly bushings that I have are the control arms made by uuc. Otherwise the rest of the suspension is still oem rubber.

How did you go about removing the factory rubber one from the housing? Grinding the rivets ?

Yup, holes have to be drilled to 10mm as well to fit the AKG bolts

From the DIYs I've read, they just used a little bit of blue threadlocker. New bolts couldn't hurt though

New Akg bushing installed into the old housing. Removal of the old bushing was not too bad actually.

What I ended up doing was taking a drill bit and drilling the top of the rivet and then punched it out. After that took a Christmas tree drill bit and enlarged the holes for the new bolts fit.

Hoping to install it tomorrow on the car.

Alright here is a little bit info in regards to this bushing.

Now keep in mind that the original one has 113k on it. So replacing it with a new bushing will give an improvement no matter what. However I opted to go this route since I had solid bushings before on my previous cars and liked the feedback I got from them.

Installing the AKG into the old housing is not that difficult if you have a good drill and the right type of drill bits to remove the rivets. Assembly into the housing is simple and easy.

To install it into the car, pretty much a straight forward shot. Remove the plastic undertray and the aluminum shield. Then with the steering wheel pointed straight, you have direct access to the 2 bolts that hold the assembly on the steering shaft. After the 2 bolts are removed, I took a long extension and hit the assembly up so it would go far enough up the steering shaft so it would come off the splines. After that, just pull the assembly down to remove it. Installing it was the same process pretty much. Slide the assembly up the steering shaft, make sure the splines are alined in the assembly and on the steering rack and then I used a hammer to bring it far enough down so the bolts would go back in. Not a bad install to be honest.

Then I took the car for a drive and noticed that my steering wheel was no longer pointed straight. Went back and redid the process again so it would be in the exact same location as before. Originally I used a thick tip sharpie to mark it but ended up being off when putting it back on. Second time around I got it back to the same exact location so the steering wheel was pointed straight. Then installed the rest of the parts back on the car.

After driving home, steering feel at low speeds feel so much more direct then before. And at higher speeds the input is even better because as soon as you turn the steering wheel a little, there is no play and just a nice connection directly to the tires. Also I noticed that while turning, there is no play at all.

So glad I did this mod and only regret is that it took me this long to do it. I will end up buying another akg bushing and putting it on the wife's car.

So after being underneath the car this past weekend, I noticed that my oil pan gasket leak is getting worse and worse. Thinking of tackling that next as well as replacing the motor mounts and trans mounts with upgraded M3 units. Thoughts on this?

Going to do it myself since I know labor will be crazy if I have a shop do it.

Not worried about the cops? The Golf TDI I'm buying has 35% (or darker, I have not seen it in person yet) all around and I can't decide if I should change the fronts.

Usually 35% is not that dark to where the cops would bother. I did have issues with 20% all around on my previous car and had gotten stopped by VA state police.

BTW the Legal limit in Virginia is 50% front and 35% rear.

But it is a work in progress. Roof and the trunk need to get wet-sanded still to remove some stains from acid rain. And then wax the whole car so I got plenty of work ahead to where I would be happy with the paint surface.

Shot of the front fender after washing,clay, sonax paint cleaner and then sonax poly net shield for protection.

Clay bar was from Uber and Auto Finesse provided the lubricant.

Sonax makes some killer stuff. Love the paint cleaner which removes fine scratches and it has wax built into it. The poly net shield gives that protection for up to 6 months.

But I was only able to get one side of the car done before it got dark.

On a more serious note, I did use almost a full can of Sonax Alcantara cleaner on the seats. I was able to remove a good bit of dirt from them even though the seats looked pretty clean.

Finally bit the bullet and ordered parts to fix my oil-pan gasket leak. New oil-pan gasket, oil dipstick o-ring, oil filter, and drain bolt.

And then " while I am in there " I ordered M3 engine and trans mounts. Came out to be $50 cheaper ordering from thebmwminipartstore.com versus ecstuning.

Ccv system was replaced with the cold version by the previous owner. I will pull the oil tube and make sure it's clean inside though.

Hoping to get the new oil pan gasket and mounts installed tomorrow. Weather looks good with a small chance of rain in the afternoon.

Oil pan is out, engine mounts are out. Cleaning things up and it's going back together. Gasket was toast and had a good leak at the rear where the trans meets the engine. Rear main seal is dry which is good. Engine mounts are dry but the rubber is starting to crack.

No sludge or any metal in the oil pan. Just took some break cleaner, sprayed it and that's how it came out. Mileage is 115k roughly. Been running Mobil 1 0w-40 since I bought the car with 90k. Oil changes every 7500k.

So at the end of it all, car got a new oil pan gasket, oil pan drain bolt, oil fill tube o-ring, Mann intake air filter, m3 engine mounts and trans mounts plus did a drain and refill on the rear diff with redline fluid.

Impressions of the mounts are great. A little bit of vibration at idle which is very minimal and does not bother me. Overall I am liking the upgrade very much over the stock mounts.

Thing to note with the cold weather CCV system. My oil dipstick tube was clean with no sludge in it. I did replace the o-ring in the pan when i removed the tube.

Still need to do the cabin air filter and fuel filter. Then clean the iacv, throttle body and check the boots and disa to make sure everything is okay.

There are a lot of mirrorless and/or micro 4/3 cameras out and coming out. A good used DSLR is not a bad buy either.

What is the value/draw of the ashtray delete?

As far as the console tray, I currently have the smokers package one and I don't smoke and dont allow it in my car. Plus it's broken so this is a good replacement.

Also I bought a new cabin air filter and got a license plate relocation bracket as a gift.

I mean, I've been using Canon cameras since day one, it wouldn't make sense to sell my L lens collection to switch even if I wanted to. That said, I fully enjoy Nikon cameras when I have used them. The D700 and 800 are spectacular not to mention the D3. And the 14-24mm f/2.8G is one of my favorite lenses.

I found the 7D to be very appealing, despite not being full frame.

Since switching to full frame, I think the best advantages are only ISO performance and DOF. Beyond that, smaller sensors are fine to me.

This weekend though I did do a road-trip with it which was roughly 560 miles total. Car did get an average of 32 mpg and one tank lasted me 510 miles before I filled it up.

Shawn, oil pan gasket was diy. I dropped the front subframe and supported the motor from the top. The gasket was not cut like some people do.

It's not a bad or difficult job. I made my own engine support bracket as well.

Shawn, oil pan gasket was diy. I dropped the front subframe and supported the motor from the top. The gasket was not cut like some people do.

It's not a bad or difficult job. I made my own engine support bracket as well.

Factory BMW roof rack arrived today. Not sure if I am going to install it on my car or the wife's car. Biggest reason for the rack is that both of the car's do not have fold down rear seats and I don't have a truck or a wagon to haul stuff with.

Called the BMW dealer this morning asking about the airbag recall. They are waiting on parts but will provide me with a loaner since I am 45 minutes away from them.

Bought some SEM Trim Black Paint. The finish that it produces is very close to the factory flat black surfaces that alot of cars have on various trim pieces.

Going to remove the mesh in the front bumper tomorrow and paint it back to black. I can't having it look all ratchet for the cruise.

Yeah it makes a nice subtle difference. I did 3 medium coats of paint with a flash time of 5 minutes between coats.

Got the itch to mod it though. But lack of a garage and winter coming up sucks.

On the other hand, I did do some work on my mom's zhp last weekend. Ended up replacing the trans mounts, guibo, csb, oil level sensor in the oil pan and a new oil change. The exhaust bolts that hold the headers to the exhaust were rusted so had to break them off and drill them. Otherwise the job went well. Hopefully in the next week or so I will replace her belts and track down a small coolant leak. The cooling system was replaced less then a year ago.

Still trying to decide on a tire size as well for it. Currently its on the 225/255 size with 8.5 wide square set-up. Thinking of going with a 235/40/18 all around. Thoughts on that?

245 was another option for sizing. But wider is not really needed and the tires cost more.

for reference, i am running 255/40/18's on the 8.5" rears with a 12.5mm spacer, and have rubbing (changed to a 10mm spacer the other day, rubbing is basically gone). did not have rubbing with 255/35/18's and the 12.5mm spacers (15's would have worked too), but the tires were much narrower (different brand). it all depends on the tire.

The style 135 18x8.5 has an offset of 50 so your current offset with the 15mm spacers gives an offset of 35. The Apex arc-8 18x8.5 have an offset of 38 so it should not rub.

IIRC conti dws are available in 235/40/18. That might be the tire choice to replace the current Falken FK453 ( i hate them ) But the Falkens are a bulky tire with a huge thick sidewall. They rub on dips and under heavy acceleration.

I rub with 18x8.5+40 and 255/35/18 RE11s (though I'm not sure physical dimensions is actually 255 tires) I am also lowered though.

I don't rub with my 17x8.5 +40 245/40/17 (which are essentially 255s in reality) Dunlop Star Specs.

Those headlights are ridiculous...I remember seeing that on mine. More than two-thirds of the cost was the head light assembly.

Is this the same shop that did your refresh? If so here's hoping they do another great job!

Day off today so went and go the Virginia state inspection done. Car passed without any issues. Was able to look under the car while it was on the lift. No new oil leaks - oil pan gasket that I replaced is nice and dry. No underbody rust. No leaking shocks. I am very satisfied with it.

Only thing to note is to to a tire rotation ( side to side ). Might tackle that today or tomorrow in my driveway.

Edit: Tire rotation done.

Current mileage is 121,434.

Negative. The light bulbs are from khoalty but the lights themselves are from Turner motorsports. They sell a Euro light set. Much better fit and finish then the depo lights.

Ordered 2 bottles of ate 200 brake fluid. Trying to figure out what to do about this brake pressure sensor though.

It is about $119 from the dealer. Not sure if I should bite the bullet and get it or wait and see if the problem goes away. Reason being is that the lights turn on and off.

Also the passenger airbag mat is $120. Ouch.
