Changed rear diff fluid, finally! Thanks to ryan for letting me borrow her shop. She's running smoothly again. Helped ryan bleed her cooling system after a water pump change, but she had finished the rest of it before I got there, so that's all I cld help with.

Agh I need to do my Diff fluid.

I worked today and then I came home and washed/clayed and waxed my car. I'm exhausted. It took me under 4 hours so it wasn't that bad. I applied wax via my PC and it was a lot easier and probably worked better than hand application. I have high hopes in thinking that it may have taken a few swirls out and got rid of my holograms. We'll see tomorrow I guess.. too dark now.

Yeah, but they are 3.1lbs lighter each... That's 12lbs unsprung without changing my 135's. What do lightweight wheels cost?

Also, OE front rotors list at $320 for the pair, the performance floating cross-drilled are $500... Still not exactly cheap.

To give you a price comparison, brand new OE rotors for my 2002 are $30 each

So, JP, you'd be paying $790 more for a set of Performance rotors that offer a measly amount of weight savings. Look at the numbers and you'll realize just what a difference that is in price for a weight savings that will gain you almost no performance advantage. Just saying...

Turner sells OE front rotors for about $160:
http://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-3861-front-brake-rotors-e46-330-z4-30si-pair.aspx

And rears for about $130:
http://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-3862-rear-brake-rotors-e46-330i-330ci-330xi-pair.aspx

$710... for 12lbs. That's a set of wheels... or close to it.

Of course, this $710 figures self labor. Rotors are super easy to do, but if you want a shop to do it, you're still looking at hundreds less for OE blanks than the performance rotors.

But if you still want to do it, go for it. If money is a concern, you can't beat OE blanks. If not, bling it up baby!

Alright, my mini spring detail went well! Just got her out in the sun for inspection since when I was done yesterday it was dark. NO MORE holograms and a good deal of swirls taken out (PO took good care of her, minimal swirls..and if any, they were VERY light) Since I'm still afraid of my PC7424, I went light with a blue pad and some mothers cleaning wax from my local store.

I'm pretty sure that's just the fronts that have the aluminum hat and are lighter. That's the way mine are at least. I checked prices at Husker BMW and it's only $772 for the set of the new version that is slotted and drilled where the old ones were just drilled.

In the spirit of losing weight for my wedding in 3 weeks, I decided the ZHP needed to go on a diet as well. So this morning I went in and removed some things that were weighing her down.

I had my box of tools (45lbs! in the trunk!)
Aside from that, with all the CF I have been installing lately, I figured it would be a good idea to take some unnecessary things out.

Coupe curb weight stock 3285lbs
Removed Factory Jack - 5lbs
Removed Donut - 25lbs
Removed Ski bag and all associated flaps and belts - 9lbs
Armrest and center console removed - 8lbs
Oem Trunk Removed - 42lbs
Oem Hood Removed - 45lbs
Oem Battery Removed - 50lbs
CSL Center Console Added - 2lbs
CSL Trunk Added - 18lbs
CF Hood Added - 25lbs
Maxx 94R Battery Added - 39lbs

Total current curb weight 3185lbs (Total of 100lbs lost!)
Oem 235 hp @ 3285 lbs is 13.98lbs per hp
Current 265 hp @ 3185lbs is 12.01lbs per hp

I took her out for a good flogging, first time she's been driven since the water pump change. She performed perfectly. Didn't have any temp problems but I did have to top off the coolant with about .5 quart after I was done. I'll keep the coolant in the trunk for a little while, just to be sure.

Speaking of weight reduction....how much significant weight added in reference to gas mileage and handling if the spare donut was removed and replaced with a full size M3 spare tire? Sorry, no weight scale at home.... Do I have to pump up the rear tires due to added weight? By how much?

Why not a 135 ZHP wheel spare?

I had thought about looking for a front 135 to use as a spare but hadn't given any thought to the weight savings of having our donut spares. Maybe I'll just stick with what I have now......donut and tire plugs and small compressor. If I can't plug it then I'll change it. It's been many years since I've had a flat tire, hope I didn't just jinx myself. :-)

Headers, intake and a tune I know I can definitely dyno 235. With my headers and intake alone I dynoed a 15 whp gain over stock. My headers have no cats btw.

I dyno'd 215 with just headers and intake 3 months ago. I am going to take it to the same dyno when I get back from my honeymoon in April. Assuming the software gave me a 13whp gain as most claim to give, I will be at 264 crank.

This is correct. Ryan knew I had a full set of OEM 18" M3 wheels in my garage but unfortunately, I'm not looking to break up my set. I have mine as a spare for my ///M. 03-21-2012, 07:28 AM
No, as far as I know it is original. My heater works fine though, blows hot when set to hot and ambient when set to cold. But when you turn the A/C on and engage the compressor, the air doesn't get cold, even with the dash dial set to 3 cold dots and the temp on 59*. I don't understand how the heater valve would impact the A/C, but I guess I have seen crazier things...

The car is back in the shop that originally did the work. I'll let yall know what they find.

So what was the problem?

Excuse my ignorance, but what's the big deal about an M3 spare?

I think Ryan has been looking for an M3 spare for a while to match her current wheels. In case of a flat she'd be looking fly instead of on a dinky donut.

Yeah, I've been looking for an M3 front for awhile. I finally found a good one for ~$80 w/out a tire. My 323 came with a full sized spare, but it's 16", and after my 330 brake upgrade on all four corners the 16" wont fit anymore. Any 17"+ wheel would work but I wanted to match my other wheels. I found lots of sets for sale, but just finding one or getting someone to sell me just one was a pretty hard feat!

This is correct. Ryan knew I had a full set of OEM 18" M3 wheels in my garage but unfortunately, I'm not looking to break up my set. I have mine as a spare for my ///M. That train of thought just got reinforced the other week when I lost my left rear Style 135 from road debris when I got a flat while driving the ZHP.

And I completely understood your train of thought, and had no hard feelings about your decision. I just had to try!

Dane, I'm getting tired just reading your list! However, I have replaced both "pork chops" on my car over the last 2 years. One pork chop broke when I ran over some cones at high speed.

Edit: New Ground Control springs arrived. Haven't actually put them on yet but that is the plan for tonight or tomorrow night. Let me count the nutty twists and turns.... 20 (wheels) + 2 (shocks) + 2 (ride height sensors) + 2 (swaybar links) + 2 (pinch bolts) + 6 (camber plates) + 2 (strut top nuts) = 34 bolts/nuts to be removed and replaced to install 4 springs. +4 more (38 total) if I have to remove rear shocks completely to adjust them for stiffer springs. (I think I can adjust them with just the bottoms disconnected.) If I need to readjust the rear ride height a few times that will be a few more lug nuts.

I took the first pic about 35 years ago just south of Garrison Dam on the Missouri River and took the second one today. I had printed a copy of a scan of the old pic to help to get the positioning right but forgot to take it with today so I had to guess. Came pretty close on a couple of the pics. Might have to do it again once it greens up this summer.

Why thank you, Dane! It turned out to be 36, not 34, as I removed the rear brake hose brackets from RTA so I could really step on the rotor/hub to get the old 7" springs out. New springs went in easier being only 6.5" long. Good news is I didn't have to unbolt RSMs to adjust shocks--I have Koni Series 30 "push button and twist" rear shocks so I don't have to compress them to adjust the rebound.

I raised rear adjusters one turn (springs are shorter but stiffer) and lowered front adjusters one turn (springs same length but stiffer). Ride heights slightly higher nwo. Looks like I should lower all adjusters one more turn. Now that I bothered to do the math (which I should have done before wrenching), it looks like I should have lowered front two turns and left rear adjusters where they were. How long do you think I should wait for new rear springs to settle before adjusting ride height?

Great work sir.

My slipring shorted and had to be replaced. Then I had them do the oil change since it was there and they showed me a failing CPV on the side of my S54 so I had them replace the CPV. HTC Thunderbolt+TT

Dane,

From what I understand, you add this to what is already in the engine (this is what we did to my ///M - no noticeable issues). Then you run this until your next normal oil change interval and add a smaller portion in your next oil change. As for can you stop using this product? I would say yes, you can stop but then you will no longer get the added benefits from using this product. I was skeptical at first but allowed my friend to add this to the ///M. By the time I drove 10 miles, I could feel a noticeable improvement to how my engine was running. I was surprised and the engine only improved in performance. This morning I drove the ///M out to a car wash to wash off all the bugs I helped kill last night and the car felt like it was in sport mode. Very impressive product :thumbsup

Prolong also has additives for the transmission and differential, which I will be adding to the ZHP before the Mafia reunion. Since I intend to use my ZHP as my daily driver, I will be treating everything with this product. :)

I did talk to my friend about using Slick50 but told him I haven't done this yet. He said that it was good I didn't. Apparently, Slick50 is not as good as they had advertised. There were some issues regarding using their product and I was briefed on how well Prolong had performed when compared to all of the other additives. Prolong finished on top (no, I don't have the documentation - will have to look this up) but my friend has never steered me in the wrong direction and I have developed a good trust friendship with him over the years. He uses this product on all of his cars. Anyway, I hope I was able to answer your questions Dane. :)

Lots of E46 parts at that Ebay seller that Webster posted in the M3 mirror thread. I wonder how much work it would be to install this adjustable lumbar setup?

Drove the car 403 miles 3 days ago from Raleigh, NC to Clinton, TN and back today... (total of 800-900 miles)
each (one way) trip was done with exactly 3/4 of a tank ....the 'to' trip got me about 30-31 MPG!
...pretty good, esp. considering all the mountains in Asheville, NC...that was fun, as always.

BTW, the Conti DWS rock in rainy weather and windy roads at brisk speeds...got the car up to 95 one time (passing) and they felt rock solid, despite pretty wet conditions.

Steve,

Most likely because you are running with both your headlights and fogs. Blue and yellow make green. That's why the light on your garage looks green because you have a blend of both lights. Looks like you are running with 8000k lighting....way too dark if you ask me. You lose so much lighting vs distance running higher temp lighting.

For everyone's info:

3000K indicates a yellow light sometimes used for fog light applications.

4300K is a white light with a slight yellow tint. This is usually OE xenon lighting based on high performance output lighting.

5000k is a white light which provides fairly good light output which is almost as good as 4300k. (This is the lighting I am considering going to)

6000k is a white light with a slight blue tint. Still considered high performing HID output but is less than 4300k.

8000k provides a pale blue light offering even less light output than 6000k

10000k is a deep blue light with severely diminished light output.

Speaking for myself, I wouldn't be going any bluer than 6000k but I would prefer more light output since I do occasionally drive at night through country roads. I just wanted to put out this info. If anything I put out is incorrect I would expect someone from the "family" to correct me. Thanks :thumbsup

The shot against the garage was just headlights but I get what your sayin... I have tried numerous different xenons ranging from 3000 to my current 8000 while your correct that anything over 6000 sees a drop in lumens I personally like the look and haven't had any problems with beam distance or lighting at night being an issue for me... Again IMO it's a preference thing

This also depends on the ballast. With my 55w ballasts from my e39, I'd say this chart is true. When I ran 6k 55w in that, your 6k description seems about right. A few months ago I tried 5k's with my OE 35w ballasts in my ZHP and it had about as much blue as my 6ks, but MUCH dimmer... so the blue stood out more. I remember constantly trying to figure out if my 55w 6k bulbs in my e39 were white or blue. They were just so intensely white, that blue slightly started to show.

So, for 35w set-ups, I'd say the following:
4300k: a warm colored white
5000k: white with a slight blue tint
6000k: pale blue
8000k: deep blue

Let's be reminded that 55w's make bulbs burn about 1k lower in the color scale as I mentioned above. So, a 35w 5k bulb will have a similar tint as a 55w 6k bulb. But 55w ballasts will obviously provide greatly improved light output.

Are the mid-section easy to remove? Any clips that need to be purchased?

The mid section I mentioned was for the front bumper one. Are you talking about the door trim? If so, I would recommend having a few clips on hand. I broke 2 but one of the 2 I broke clipped back in. I removed the door trim with a screwdriver wrapped in MF towel. Pulled an edge I could grab then stuck the screwdriver and pulled on the screwdriver, to pull the trim off.

I just bought some of that stuff. Have been meaning to do this for a little while now. Looking good Nomar!

Thanks....I would advise to only use a little of the cleaning solution. The bottle says to dilute the 4oz bottle in a gallon of water but you will only need 1/4 of that. Also, once you apply the black dye follow it up with a quick light wipe of a cloth. First coat it applied the dye and let it dry but it looked runny. 2nd coat I wiped after the dye and it looked nice and smooth.

I've thought about the same thing, but many people have said that having that extra light from a 55w ballast is too much. It's almost like when you're driving in daylight and go into a tunnel.. your vision is temporarily lost until your eyes re-adjust to the darkness. With the FX-R's, I think that this would be amplified even more.

I noticed tonight that my CBI bulbs are pretty much broken in. I'm more than happy with my current light output ATM.

I'm spending my break running my shutter connections to the LCM. Drove 30 mins to BMW of Towson to pick up the contact bushings for the shutter connection, the LCM contact bushings and the shutter base connectors. What a job that was...spent 3 hours today and only got ONE connection crimped and shrink wrapped from the Ballast. I'm running them through the DME box, so I had to take the DME and all it's connections out in order to slide the wires up towards the LCM. It's pretty easy once you just start analyzing the situation. I popped the cover above the driver foot well off, and tomorrow I'll run the wires from the Passenger Ballast to the LCM. I still need to crimp the connections for the LCM pins.

Next step is to figure out which pins on the LCM control the Shutters. I think it's pins 2 and 36...need to find out from Terra.

yesterday my gf took me for a nice little drive in my car. it was the first time the car had really been driven in over a month, since having the cooling system and CABs and wheel repair done; also the first time i'd ever been a passenger in the zhp before. as for my gf, i was impressed with her skills on the stick! anyway i know i wasn't driving, but i did listen with the windows down and the engine sounded great. also had her do some braking maneuvers to test out the new CABs. veddy nice! much firmer suspension feel, really impressed by the difference. and the 2 right side wheels are totally refinished and free of curb rash.

overall made me really pine to be able to drive again...hopefully less than a month away.

I never thought of myself as a vert guy, but I do enjoy stealing my mothers 330cic when given the opportunity in the summer! There's nothing quite like driving to the beach with the top down(2 hour drive), something surreal and super relaxing about it.

Not standard for 2003. I have the older LCM. This one with s/w 4.0 or greater allows the one touch triple blink feature which I want to have. Chad44 plans to retrofit auto headlights in his 2003 and I will most likely do the same when that time comes. Right now I want the one touch triple blink :)

I filled up the tank. 231 miles traveled for a grand total of 15 mpg. Not too bad considering last time I pumped was 03/28. http://img.tapatalk.com/47c579de-6c79-d6da.jpg

Guys, I had scheduled an oil change for mid week next week. Tonight (about 30 min. ago) the oil-light came on. Am I good to drive the car thru at least Monday?

Let's go ahead and verify which light before we say... You're good to go. Red? Or yellow?

If red... Do not start the car.

If yellow, check level on dipstick and make sure it's visible. Even pick up a quart... Imho... Would be the conservative choice.

Today my "low coolant" light came on. I just added about 1/2 of a thing of coolant to it about 2 months ago... are you freaking kidding me. I really don't know what it could be. No puddles or anything.. I really just hope my engine isn't sucking it up and burning it...:begging

Fucking light is coming on for me. It goes off after driving it but it will randomly return. I haven't opened the Expansion Tank since having it repaired over Christmas, so it seems that either it's leaking from some where...(Upper Rad hose or Expansion Tank seems to be depositing some Coolant, or it's burning it, which would be Bad News Bears...Thinking about tearing the car down this Summer and pulling the Engine for a full overhaul and rebuild. Need to win that Mega Millions first tho...:shifty

Mine came on while my heat was on.. which was also coincidentally the same area as where it usually comes on (large downhill + same distance from home) and goes out after turning the heat off. I can't find any leaks.. and I'll freaking shit myself if my car is burning it. I just dumped $1k into my suspension, I don't have the freaking time or money to dump into cooling system parts ATM... ugh.

One of many projects I have going on ATM. This will enable my daily driver to have one touch triple blink. The auto headlights will be something else I will update to my ZHP at a later date...

It's a feature that's on most newer Euro cars. Both my parent's Audi's have it. Really nice feature IMO. I thought this could be enabled through coding though?

As stated earlier, you need an LCM with an SW value of 4.0 and higher.

That is correct. s/w vers has to be 4.0 or 4.5 in order to have the triple blink feature. I think you will only get this from mid '05 - '06 models only. I found out that the LCM can be reprogrammed to work in my ZHP so I'm going to give it a go when time allows. :)

All you need is a butter knife and some electrical tape on one side and the top of the knife. Just wedge it between the dash and the outside edge of the trim. Wiggle it back and forth until you can get a grip on it. Not hard at all and even easier for sedans!!

The doors on a 4dr are easy as hell compared to 2dr.

I only need that for the front trim, I've pulled Albert's door trim up with just my hand. Just open your door and pull up from the back where it goes into the door jamb

Clayed and Optiseal'd my sedan- getting it ready for its sale pictures. It'll be hard to say goodbye! :crying

Also finished the Vanos/VCG job on my coupe, note for all, do NOT buy Victor Reinz gaskets. Poor quality that could probably cause a leak. I decided to not finish the job last friday due to that- and put the BMW gasket on today.
