I agree, Derek. I think I'm going to hold off on getting an exhaust for now. I can go back and forth with myself all day but I think I should keep thinking about it.

Can he do resonator deletes?

That's what I was telling ya about dalton, I wanna have him delete mine while I'm down there

IMO, the HKS catback is the perfect exhaust for our cars, had one once on a non-ZHP but let it go with the car only to find out later that HKS doesn't sell aftermarket for BMW in the US anymore. I've already laid dibs to Derbo's if he ever decides to sell it.

Agree, resonator deletes don't do much unless you replace one of the resonators with an x-pipe (the aforementioned needed back pressure) and then put in a performance aftermarket muffler.

Here's a cheap idea that Crestwood is going to do in Oct -- do the muffler delete, buy some tips and he can weld in the piping in place of the deleted muffler along with your new tips. Try it,if you don't likeit then have him reinstall your OEM muffler. You'd only be out the cost of a set of tips, a piece of custom bent pipe and minor labor charge.

Nice TS3 dealings gents. Like someone said, exhaust is an enthusiast purchase, not a bean-counter one. But you could justfiy by saying better gas mileage, but mine when down. Still need to figure that one out.

@Meric, plate looks BAUS.

@Charles, liking that you got the panel. PM me with where you got/price if it you don't mind.

I have to agree with Dalton, it's cheaper to buy a muffler and have the piping done. On my jeep I bought a magnaflow muffler and had custom piping done in 3.5 from the cats back, and that thing was LOUD, nothin better then a free flowing hemi.
And I did all that for less then 400$ including labor, I'd have a hard time justifying 1500$ or more for an exhaust, but that's just me

Found the Flaw!

After having the ZHP for 69 months, I finally found a defect!

With the move to Tennessee I need to get new plates and my "3ZHP" has occupied that space for 4 or 5 years. Well; BMW uses brass inserts in the plastic frame that corrode around the Stainless Steel screws.

http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss351/3zhpguy/ZHP/Maintenence/August%202012/IMG_8778.gif

Plate and frame removed with a big screw driver and I wasn't using it to turn the screws.

http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss351/3zhpguy/ZHP/Maintenence/August%202012/IMG_8779.gif

In order to separate the plate from the frame, I had to cut the screws using a Cut Off Wheel on my air grinder.

As for me, got the Stealth bulbs for the taillights in the mail. Actually, they've been sitting on my porch all weekend, but we just got back from NY...

Well some of you may have seen my awesome two-faced Sedan at Bimmerfest...maybe a donut or two...well my Shadowline Gloss Black Vinyl finally arrived from NY after being routed through Iowa...:facepalm That will be going on sometime this week.

Tomorrow, the car gets to go back to the Body shop to have some issues addressed. Driver side view mirror adjust doesn't work, mirror cap wasn't resprayed (They think it will buff out, clearly it's down to the primer :facepalm), the front left wheel is out of balance, because it was hit...but again, they thought it was just dirty, didn't even bother to balance it or check for out of round-ness, and the pièce de résistance...when I turn the wheel at highway speed, I get an awesome steering wheel shudder...clearly the control arm is fucked. I'm going to give them one more shot to finalize this, or else I'm calling Liberty Mutual and complaining that it's not as I had it before it was involved with their client and I'm going to take it to the dealer to have them inspect the suspension damages. I'm sure LM would love that!

Buddy is gonna be in town that has lots o tools. We're gonna work on the ZHP control arm bushings, steering guibo, and driver's side brake (clean up the bushings and grease the slide pins with some high-quality synthetic lube because I think mine are binding on the driver's side). Then we're gonna work on his Alfa Romeo Spyder, which has a dead battery (again), rats that chewed through the starter wires, and old gas.

I might end up shaving my brake pads down if that doesn't fix it. They could be tapered.

That's what I have read as well, but it seems to be a widely debated topic. Some BMW techs use synthetic lube, some don't, some people use dry lube, etc. I'm more than likely going to just clean them up really really good, clean out the inside of the bushings with a pipe cleaner or something, make sure my brake pads are level, and hope for the best.

Right now, my driver's side brake is looking something like this:

http://i.imgur.com/PwOKQl.jpg (http://imgur.com/PwOKQ)

It's always had a problem like this. It used to be the inner part, but now it's the outer.

I asked EricTheCarGuy and he suggested cleaning the slide pins and lubing the parts of the brake pad that sit on the caliper, then linked me to a useful video in which the outer pad of a Subaru was not making any contact.

Curbage. I'm so pissed. Apparently this year at my school is the biggest incoming freshman class ever by a long shot, as well as an influx across all other years.

The 1st week and a half is a nightmare to park. The university doesn't ticket during this time so everyone (parking permit or not) drives and parks in all of the lots/parkade. I had to settle for a meter (AGAIN) and it was a solo spot right next to a dip in the road so of course the curb was 5+ inches high. Was paying more attention to the kids walking in front of me than my curb position so it caught a good half way around the rim.

Can't really see a lot here.. but my rim (as all of them) was PERFECT. I guess I'll live with it and when I switch to my winter set, I'll take this rim to the rim repair guy at work and give it to him for the winter and throw him a few bucks to work it on his off time.. which he usually has a lot of since he does one car at a time and is often times literally watching paint dry.

sorry to hear about this. i will be honest, i curbed my pass rear wheel the other day. just knicked the curb on a tight right hander in traffic. i was PISSED as well. i will be honest again, ordered a new replacement wheel, which came in today. will sell the curbed one. i can't have one of my brand new rims damaged already...

crestwood, nice haul, sorry about the light. that is some BS.

today i also received my jetspeed variable speed, 2-way air blower/surface dryer (link: http://www.chemicalguys.com/ELECTRIC_BLOWER_JETSPEED_DRYER_BLOW_DRYER_p/acc_303.htm) been so damn sick of drying during this summer heat. by the time i pre rinse, wash and dry i'm so worn out i say fuck it and ignore the polish/seal/wax process. also this will allow me to get rid of residual water in all the little nooks and crannies with ease. PLUS, it comes with a dust bag and has 2-way flow so it can double as a vacuum! hopefully it doesn't suck lol.

Relax guys.

I explored the possibility of our new buddy Ben bringing it back up to Minnesota where it's from. He said it was the car he actually wanted when Eli was selling but wasn't ready. We spoke about it at length but ultimately the work I've put into it (and when I say that, I really mean "the work I've made Ryan put into it" ;)) was worth more than he was looking to spend and I didn't want to walk away from the car too easily having paid for it all. I'm not looking for an out but if I think we all have a number in our head that if offered we'd take it. He knows (because I told him) that he would need to entice me a little to get it sold but he has another sweet deal on the table I think he wants to explore first. Maybe better now that we will have a new zhp among us all!

what would have been the replacement?

last night i blew apart the radio and console pieces to remove and replace my aux input cable. i no longer have any issues with my aux cable (previously the old one would have the right channel go out intermittently and also caused static due to a damaged end piece) and sound is perfect. after installing the OEM sirius radio last week, i think i'm finally done with any audio mods on this car for quite a while...

Seth,

That's why I mentioned getting a 2nd BMW (possibly an ///M) to go with your ZHP. I took my ZHP to the local dealer near where I live and several sales reps came out just to talk to me about my ZHP. Obviously they knew what the ZHP was about and told me that they rarely see one in the flesh so to speak. After seeing people's reactions regarding my ZHp....I don't see why I would ever want to sell mine let alone why the BMW mechanic (previous owner) let this car go...it's an awesome car :thumbsup

Luckily, I have the ///M to take out on occasion whenever I miss the additional power...;)

Yeah very true and again, as I said to you in a PM, if it was up to having an ///M (or Porsche :)) and a daily, if I was financially ready for that - sure I might have let it go a bit easier (still hard though). However, I don't think I'm there yet and would rather get the new house stuff figured out 1st (and a salaried job) before I go take on a 2nd car payment.

I've worked at a BMW dealership.. and they have a 'rim' guy that fixes rims with curb rash for cars that come in. He's new and work is slow, so he's been keeping busy with lot/trade in cars. So he said he'll do mine for $50 a rim. Not too shabby I reckon.

$500 for mafia members

I bought them from a guy that they were his zhp winters, so I assume fitment is good.

These were my winters for the e90. And a couple guys at my work run these on there e92s.

They are on the M3 right now with all seasons on them. If I unload them I will put the winter tires back on for the buyer mount and balance them.

I got a set of winter tires a few years ago that had Firestone Winterforce winter snows mounted on them. I haven't had any issues using these tires and will be using them again (3rd winter season) this upcoming winter. They are cheaper than the Blizacks and seem to do fairly well in the snow :thumbsup

New Pilkington windshield in, much better fit. He even gave me OEM BMW mouldings, which have rain channels. Pretty neat. All around it looks like it fits exactly the way it supposed to. Guy said it should be much better than the previous aftermarket version.

One or two very teeny tiny bubbles in the center of the rain sensor, but I tested it out with a spray bottle and it works fine. Lights turn on when it's covered. No problems seen :fingerscrossed If it becomes a problem, I'll have two choices:.

1. Call Safelite again to fix it
2. Do the DIY myself and try to fix the rain sensor lens. I'd just do the DIY myself if I had to, I think...

Where do you live? And how much snow is there? There are 2 types of snow tires:

- Q rated (88 MPH max), for deep snow.
- Performance snows (118 MPH rated). Better for higher speeds, light snow. Still 1000x better than all-seasons. (you prob want these)

I run performance rated snow tires, because in deep snow I just drive my wife's X3 (with snows). More of a ground clearance thing (the ZHP front bumper wont clear snow banks)

Blizzaks are OK... Personally, I only run Nokians. Nothing comes close. They have 3 models:

WRG2 is the performance snow (I run on my ZHP and my wife's X3)

Hakkapeliitta R is the non-studded Q rated snow. If I lived in Vermont, I'd put these on my car.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta 7 is a Q rated studdable snow. If I had huge balls and lived in Canada, I'd put these on my wife's X3.

I don't think you're going to find any more $77 batteries. That was a few years ago and prices (lead prices) have gone up quite a bit since then. Wal Mart used to have a decent price, $117 or something like that last time I checked. I believe they are made by Exide.

Husker BMW has a pretty good price on batteries. Was tempted to buy one during what turned out to be their summer of free shipping (which ended early Aug). Maybe check their home page next week and see if they have reinstated it.

But their shpg prices are otherwise very good. They sent me a HUGE box a while back, Fedex Saturday delivery for $10.

I have one of the $77 94R batteries from Walmart and yes, the price is closer to $120 these days.

Got my new cowl today! Ah, it looks SOOOO much better.

I also found that inside the cowl, there is a secondary "safety" gasket in case some water leaks from the top of the cowl. This is why you won't find much water at all in your engine compartment if your cowl is in bad condition. If you look on the bottom of the cowl, you'll see another tight sealing gasket. This will divert the water to the right place as well, so if your cowl doesn't look perfect, you're still okay. When that gasket breaks (which mine did), then you want to replace it.

Installed my wiper arms today, to my horror the windshield wipers went down instead of up and buried themselves in my cowl. Took them off using the "wiggle" method (it really works!) and ran the wiper motor without the wiper. Everything looked fine, so I don't know what caused it. I have a feeling that the wiper motor was in the top position, but I just couldn't tell.

Made sure it was in its home position, installed my wipers again, tightened down the nuts good and it's all fine. It sounds much better than my old motor, that thing was clearly dying.

Just glad everything is slowly getting back to normal again.

Bad news is, I found a teeny dent on the top of my roof, which must be from a falling acorn. Yay, North Carolina. :facepalm

Edit: So, I just discovered why my wiper motor did not burn out and get ruined.

If you look at that little pressure nut, you'll see the tiny tapers all over it. They're not particularly strong, and you may even see some strips in them. The reason for this is because if there is, say, heavy snow or if your wipers are frozen to the windshield and you try to turn on your wipers, the pressure nut is soft, and will give way before the spline on the wiper transmission. This keeps any damage from occurring. So, all that will happen is the nut spins within the wiper arm. Usually it can be fixed by orienting it in a new direction or something. Or just get a new one. It's normal for them to be that way. TIS even says to check for looseness and replace if necessary.

Smart design, very cool, but seriously annoying for service. It's like BMW designed these cars for people to purposefully mess up (e.g. CDV for clutch).

Installed 2 New Hankook Ventus V12's for $500 @ my local town fair tire. I was going to go with DWS for slightly more money, but after having a long talk about UTQG ratings with my brother, we decided for a 500hp car that too high of a treadwear rating can cripple handling, performance and cornering.... Not a bad price for 285/35ZR19

Be glad that you didn't go with the DWS... they have a soft sidewall on them. We just replaced the Michelin Diamaris on the X5 with DWS because they were $500 cheaper and they are an all season tire... we can really feel the difference with the softer sidewall. handling is not near as crisp

OK, crisis averted. Spoke to Halston, he said the factory that makes these started selling them on their own and such. A large number of them don't have the UUC Corsa on them, so they weren't originally sold by UUC however, the exact same stuff on the insides as the originals so it might be "fake" but it's legit. I was gonna paint the thing anyway so I don't care, I paid for the sound, not the name.

Let’s see; I slept till noon, got showered up and ran in to town to pick up a few things. Got back home and took my sweet old time sweeping up the garage and clearing of the work bench and before 10:00 tonight I finished up putting in both lower control arms and control arm bushings. Wow; what a difference. I just got back from a long and fun test drive and no more brake shutter or noise when I lift in the corners.

I was humored when I dropped a text to my Son back in Ohio to tell him I just finished up the one side. His response; “Motor mounts need tightening, starter and alternator need minor wiring, propane hose and rad + the hood and I’m done.” HeHe, he pulled the motor on his Toyota rock crawler today to change out the throw out bearing. Like Father like Son!

I normally run RE11s and I get a good amount of tramlining. I suspect it is from the -3 degrees of camber I have in the front that makes it do that more than anything else. But I will give you more thoughts after my hour drive today to meet a friend up.

It seems that all High Performance tires tramline once they get worn to a certain point. I've experienced that with Bridgestone Hankooks and the Michelins on the X5
But the Dunlops seem to tramline right off the bat... that's why I'm curious.

When I put my Hankooks on I noticed my tramlining was gone but now with about 20,000 on them it's come back. It makes me wish they didn't have so much tread left on them. When these fronts and my recently replaced rears get down there I'll probably have to try the Pilot Super Sports. Otherwise I've been really happy with the Hankooks. SO much quieter then the Bridgestone RE040's it came with. The Bridgestones did have a stiffer sidewall though which was nice but now that I'm used to these I don't really notice it anymore.

Meyle HD FCABs, new flexible steering coupling, and cleaned up my slide pins.

http://i.imgur.com/F2Bpbl.jpg

Today was a good day! Gigantic difference in steering. I love it.

Can anyone show me pictures of the front of their pressed-on FCABs on their control arm? I lubed them with soapy water, pressed them on as hard as I could, and then whapped them with a rubber mallet a bunch of times really hard but they weren't moving any farther. The nub is basically flush with the inner part that sticks out. I had to do some twisting to get them to fit over the bolt holes, but they went in without much trouble at all.

I'm trying to make sure I pressed them in far enough. Because they were refusing to go any further with as much effort I was giving, I figured they're okay.

I finally took off my CDV. It was a lot simpler than I thought. I was under the impression I needed to get a delay valve replacement without the restrictor for the longest time. Turns out you can just remove the CDV and bolt it right back up to the existing clutch line to the brake line. I also did a brake flush/clutch bleed while I was at it.

Wait, does a 14816 bolt right up to the E46 or does a Y pipe have to be made?

I think I want to change one of my muffler/resonators underneath the car for a Magnaflow.. Is that pretty easy/in-expensive for a muffler shop to do? I know the muffler is single in, single out on the 323i and I can get the muffler itself for around $80 shipped. Just put a new Autozone H7 AGM battery in the ZHP. I'd ASSumed the car still had its original battery, because a) I have all receipts/records from the first 2 owners, and there's no sign of a battery replacement, b) pulling the cover revealed an OEM battery, and c) the thing was cranking a bit slower than normal lately. Not wanting to take any chances here in the valley of dead batteries (30+ days of 110+ heat every summer is brutal on batteries), I decided to proactively swap it out for a quality AGM replacement. Bought the new one, pulled the old, and after buttoning everything back up and lifting the old battery to load it up for the ride back to the parts store, I see the manufacture date on the side - 10/09. Whoops! Oh well, it probably wasn't long for this world anyways, and the AGM should last well here (4 solid years out of the OEM AGM in my M Coupe).

I don't want to change the rear silencer because it's a Dinan unit and I got it for free ;)

No it's single center in so I had a Y made. Good tone thought, smashing a lot of air in there this way!

Bought mine from the dealer, $150 for the set. You can buy them from multiple places online for about $100-125, I just kept forgetting to order them online. I prefer the OEM ones anyway

I usually go Meyle HD from ECSTuning. I would check FCPEuro, as they are an affiliate now.

Yesterday my ZHP got mistaken for another E46 :/

Went to walmart (looking for Space Jam (FTW)), ended up getting MIB I & II (FTW).. and coming out, the girl I was with thought my car was the e46 parked two spots before me. It was a steel grey 325xi or something close. Xi wheels, 100% stock.. and it got confused for mine.

Time for new mods!

It wasn't parked in the normal lot.. it was parked right in front of walmart kinda by the handicapped spots, so the spots were bigger. So I felt OK about putting it there

So I was filling up from empty (light was on) about 64$ of premo later the pump stopped when the tank was full.... Pulled the nozzle out and out came fuel! I'd say a quarter gallon spilled over onto my paint. Wtf? Never happened before. Any ideas? I came home and washed that section and re waxed it.
Also just got done making a spreadsheet of all the maintenance and mods iv done to date for the car

It was probably a faulty shut-off in the pumphandle. I have seen it once or twice before. Seems the evap hose gets gas in it so when you pull the nozzle out of the filler spout, the gas runs out of the evap hose and all over the car side and your shoes.:foottap

Nothing to do with your ride. Sorry you got a gas bath, no fun.

Yea I smelled nice all the way home haha. Worst one iv ever had was on our tower ladder at the station, I was pumping diesel into it one day after a call and it burped all over me when it filled up, I'm talking like a gallon or more sprayed out. My bunker gear smelled for a week

it's not bad, definitely a different tone which I like however I felt the build up of back pressure instantly when I got on the gas compared to the magnaflow which is a straight though design. :(

Headers are coming soon so hopefully that makes up for it and then some.

I'm only taking as much time as Seth takes with it. Even when I get it, I'll probably wait till sigfest 2.5 to get it mated to my car. I plan on doing a resonator delete to go with it too.

I just did that to mine cause I hate the step bezel and boot and the retaining clip on my boot was broken, got a deal on an alcantara boot and Zhp knob, poser I know but I'm only leaving the Zhp knob on till I can find a nice auto knob. I didn't wire anything I just took the led board off the back of the little display and tucked everything away....

Also gonna paint all that silver trim black soon, IMHO it's a worth wile upgrade just because the double bezel that the step has looks silly.

Nate, that boot looks terrible lol. It's like.. all puffed out. But some coins in there or something and weigh it down for a while until it'll sit like that w/ no coins in it.

Also, how do you shift? Isn't there a thing you have to press on the knob to shift?

Also also, My guess: waxing your engine bay. Wat.

Well, just got the ZHP home from the dealer. As I get ready to park my ZHP for 2 months while I'm out to sea, I took her in and had the tires evacuated and refilled with nitrogen. This will prevent the tires from flat spotting while sitting for so long.

I have to admit too, it seemed to drive a little better/quieter, but I think that's just because I had them overfill all the tires by 3 pounds.

Dude, solid tip ill have to do that, it's only like that cause it's new. And idk about keeping the knob it's poser, it does look good but idk. And Dalton, the button just keeps your from slamming into reverse at speed but it's not needed.
Not waxing the engine bay.... Keep guessing lol although there is wax involved

Does a res delete free up any back pressure?

Well, balls.

Got my Meyle HD Control arms and bushings (pre-set from oembimmerparts), and tie rods installed just in time for a road trip. Got alignment done right away. Noticed at highway speed that I have a steering wobble. It's most notable at speed but I think it's there somewhat all the time. Didn't have time to go back to the shop and ask them about it. Dunno what it could be but I had no wobble before replacing all that stuff and if the new bushings are bad that is gonna suck. Any idea what causes this?

Also then my rear pass. window got smashed. Lost an mp3 player in the glove box but damn the inside of my car was spotless. Had to get a non-pilkington replacement on the spot. My goal of keeping this car mint is failing pretty badly lol.

Oh and my DCS/TCS lamp came on along with amber Brake light. I did not press the button. After I parked next times I've driven it's all normal, but, not cool... you know.

UdubBadger
09-05-2012, 09:57 AM
Damn sounds like a day from hell.

What tires do you run? My guy at iND told me thats most likely the culprit ff the wobble.

gammagoblin
09-05-2012, 10:10 AM
Conti DW. Replaced as a set not more than a few K ago. No wobble before I did the replacement, though my CABs were going. The steering is both stiffer with the new CA/CAB/TR but now has a wobble that wasn't there. Maybe the tires have been out of balance all along, and I couldn't tell until I got the stiff bushings in?

Crestwood1001
09-05-2012, 10:14 AM
Did you have them balanced after you did all that work? Not expensive and worth the time just to eliminate one more thing
