I just did that to mine cause I hate the step bezel and boot and the retaining clip on my boot was broken, got a deal on an alcantara boot and Zhp knob, poser I know but I'm only leaving the Zhp knob on till I can find a nice auto knob. I didn't wire anything I just took the led board off the back of the little display and tucked everything away....

^ nice, I see how you did it.

well I stopped at Autobahn to get some parts for the 2002

It was a lot of work to sand the rubber off the old interior (120, 320, 600) and then plastidip 3-4 layers. Looks darn good though. I'll have to grab photos tomorrow during the day but here is a quick shot of the steptronic plate and center console/cup holders that I did.

I also added a iPhone cable for the stereo (you can see it near the side bolster). That's the best I could do with the cable length so hopefully I like it.

Prep time was a couple days for me after work, but it can be done in a couple hours of your hands can manage. I sanded with 120 to get the rubber layer off. 320 to smooth the imperfections from the 120 (and any extra rubber bits). Then the 600 to get pretty smooth.

I washed with water and then let it dry in the garage.

After that I plastidiped with 4 coats - waiting 30min between coats. I noticed I didn't get some areas smooth so it showed a couple scrapes in the beginning. After 4 coats everything looked even.

I would definitely recommend prep work because I did a half ass job getting all the details in the cup holder and it is still visible if looking very closely.

Installed my BMW performance shift knob. Not too shabby.. It feels pretty decent. A good change up from the zhp knob. I'll be keeping both so I can switch back and forth.

Then I vacuumed it after giving my step dads 535 a thorough wash and vacuum. Then I took this out of my alcantara steering wheel:

I cleaned it lightly once a month or so ago.. But I've only had it since January and I'm surprised since my hands are always kept decently clean.

Picture makes it seem a bit worse than it really is. The cloth was decently clean, but the darker part isn't necessarily that dark

took my car to the shop today to diagnose the pull to the left and steering wheel vibration at highway speeds. had them do a roadforce straighttrack measurement, where they determined a pull to the left of 13lbs caused by radial tire wear on the drivers front tire. solution is to replace fronts. they also roadforce balanced all 4 wheels for free (!) and made sure tire pressures were at 32/38 f/r. she's still pulling to the left, but hot damn is the ride better after the balancing and pressure correction! score.

In CT we are required to pay a property tax for owning our vehicles each year. A portion was due this August however since I sold my zhp in July I thought I was free and clear. Went to renew the registration on the wifes E90 and they informed me that I must pay backtaxes on the 330 in order to re-register the E90. Sigh....

I really am at a loss for words because I paid sales tax when I purchased the wifes E90 last year. Then get taxed again under a property tax for that same year of ownership. Doesnt that fall under taxation without representation?

I had to do that once. I didn't even own the car, it was a lease that I had the new owner payoff and purchase. Illinois had me pay FULL tax on the car when I leased it, and then FULL tax on the payoff again when I "purchased the lease out". I lost a lot of money on that deal.

Turns out my car had a massive washer fluid leak, not a coolant leak. There are many excuses as to why I did not properly diagnose this. None of them make me feel any better. Though I'm happier to be an idiot than to need a new cooling system.

I'm writing this column as we speak. hahahahaha.

Good and bad things happened today.

Good: Finally got to my sunroof shade
Bad: Passenger side metal guider things were bent like cinnamon rolls. So I couldn't get the new plastic parts on. Fvcking great. What do? New sunshade? All DIY's have these intact, and none ever say what to do if they're bent. Terra and I tried bending them back but they just broke from being old and fragile

These:

Now the other Good/Bad.
Good: Installed my passenger side CBI that I got replaced for free. Also fixed the angel eye on the projector side. From time to time it would only light half the ring, or like 75% power. I'd have to hit the headlight for it to get 100%

Bad: Got it all buttoned up and then the drivers side bulb started flickering and died. Then came back on. I'm letting the car sit for a bit in hopes of it fixing itself. I'm about to rage real hard right now.

I recall a thread about that being bent, I think a new sun shade is your only option unless you can find a part number for that.... And is that the same bulb you just got replaced?

The metal part is incorporated into the shade. So I need a new shade. I took my old one out in the meantime. I'll probably wait a while until I bite that bullet.

But no. Initially the bad bulb was the drivers side. Swapped it to the other side to see if the problem followed the bulb and it did. So I took it out and put an old Phillips bulb in there. Then I took the passenger side Phillips bulb out to replace with new CBI, and the older drivers side CBI was giving me shit.

New hazard/central locking switch also replaced, since the old one was acting up. The bottom of the old one broke apart in my hand during removal. Wonder if that plastic gets brittle from exhaust heat from the trans tunnel.

Hermes
09-08-2012, 09:15 PM
Justin, the giant wheel is staying only until we decide to ditch non-power steering. It's not exactly the best technology, but the car was built in 1968 and it works. The main problem is the amount of fab necessary to mod a power steering rack in. I'll wait until I am ready for an engine swap to deal with that kind of non-urgent project. For the near future this car will be probably be just a good running, kinda ugly, slightly modded 02. When I put some serious cash aside there will be a full Frankenstein swap and some crazy mods I've dreamed up, but that is probably still years away.

Funny I read this, since I saw a puddle under my car last week. Immediately thought coolant and was wondering why since I did a system replacement last year. Then I realized it was blue and not sweet smelling, ah ha! Winshieldwasher fluid. A small rubber tube is leaking under the resevoir. Havent fixed it yet, but a load off my mind!

Almost forgot. I think my clutch is having issues.

Feels like the friction point is higher than normal when releasing it in gear. Also on start up it has been slipping (almost feels like the tires slipping) a touch the first few times through the gears.

What should I look for here as a sign of needing to consider replacing it or if not, bleeding or something. Could it just be environmental (colder weather coming in and dew in the AM)?

The car adjusts your friction point for you, so it should be in the same spot in the pedal throughout the life of the clutch.

Slipping is a whole other ball game. Coast down the street in 1st gear at about idle speed... jam it in 5th or 6th and gun it. If the RPMs go up and the clutch slips.. your days are numbered.

My car's clutch feels different in the mornings too. It has freakin crazy clutch chatter when I start it and go 1st thing in the morning. After it warms up it goes away. Usually after putting it in reverse and then 1st to leave my driveway, after that it's fine. It doesn't seem to do it as much on colder mornings like we've been having recently here in my area.

How can I have that when the expansion tank is only 9,000 miles old and it's an OEM part?!

Dalton, Oil has an outlet through the piston rings. If everything in the cooling system is sealed, where else should it go? No where. Chasing this leak is getting ridiculous. I should have never changed the system to begin with...should have let it fail first before fixing it.

I drove to Montreal last weekend and over the border it's a 100kph max zone, all the Quebec plates are cruising like 120-130. On the NY side there were state troopers sprinkled all around I87, I was doing ~5 over, a WRX doing 10 over passed me and few miles later saw him having a chat with one, yikes. Had the cruise set at +5 after that, heh.

+1. Usually when you're about 7 over, they'll let you just pass by. Then after that is when it's up to the specific cop and what he wants to do and what traffic flow is like.

I usually flow with traffic, but sometimes I encourage traffic to flow with me.

Same here. I usually like to be the one following and not leading. On my way back from bimmerfest this year I cruised behind a nice new 7er (non-bimmerfest attendee) for a lot of my highway trip back. I actually prefer to be the leader, I'm always worried about rock chips and knowing what in the road ahead of me. If I'm following I at least do the full 2 seconds of space between me and the car in front of me. My driving conditions allow this. While we were up North I noticed there's not enough room to do this.

The part that gets me is why would BMW bother to make half the bracket out of stainless and the other out of normal mild steel? Lets see, it's in contact with the exhaust, so it gets hot. It also gets the worst the road grime being low to the ground, and it's not plated. Hmm, not surprisingly it rusts.

I feel like people move over easier when they see an agressive looking vehicle in their rearview mirror. There was a guy up my ass today on the way to school in a new impreza on the 'sort of' back roads to the highway. I drove normally to and on the highway.. and he ended up catching up at our exit. He was weaving a lot though. Gotta make that impreza work!

BUT. Back on topic.

Today I washed, magic eraser'd my trim, opti-sealed the paint + door sills, then finished it with a quick coat of wax. I sure do like the Opti-Seal in that you just put it on and there's no removal like normal sealants/waxes

Flushed the X5's brake fluid with ATE Super Blue, checked its brake pads' & discs' thickness, & rotated its wheels (since I had 'em all off). Also found the likely culprit of its washer fluid leak: a 90º hose elbow that I think vibrated loose. Reseated it (along with all of the other hose & pump connections) & will be checking it regularly for the next few days.

Also finished the "inspection" portion of my ZHP's Inspection I; all that's left is ordering & replacing the microfilter. The X5's Inspection II will be next!

I think he means to buy the OEM rubber floor mats. they'll hold up much better and soak up much more water. You can get the tan, but the black is a nice contrast IMO (and doesn't look as dirty). The mats come with anchors so they don't move also.

front $55 pair:

rear $29 pair:

Really?! To what? I've never heard that before--I have them and they are terrific--they don't move and hold a boatload of water.

You know there are different grades of OEM rubber mats, right? The expensive ones are really good. The cheap ones suck.

These are the good rubber ones:

I got my baby back from the shop today after some crazy woman backed into me on a green light.....silly X5 driver had it in reverse, not drive. Bent in the hood and drivers side grill pretty well. Despite having a Jeep Patriot for two weeks (thanks BMW for the parts delay), I was able to get a brand new hood, though not CF because of complications with Andy's Autosport claiming they have a hood when they did not.

Anyway, its back and I now no longer need to repaint my grills or order matte black ones, since they repainted them for me :)

Today I took the stupid black paint that some DB PO of my Magnaflow muffler put on. Aircraft paint remover worked wonders.. all I had to do was wipe most of it off with a Magic Eraser. Now I have to polish the tips since they're scuffed to all hell.

After that, I decided to take a crack at my steering wheel controls. The volume up/down buttons were greasy since I got it, so I took a sliver of a Magic Eraser I had left over and went over it. Shine = gone! My whole steering wheel controls look brand new now (since I then decided to lightly go over the whole thing)

I go OEM mats. I actually have two pairs, on top each other. An older more worn pair that's not exactly the right color for daily driving and a new-ish pair that I swap out when I want the interior looking it's best. They are too expensive to wear down.

The carpeted OEM mats look great, but my kids get them way too dirty, too fast. So I now rock the OEM black rubber mats year round. I have a friend with cocomats in his E46 and they look great and don't show dirt. But everyone on the forums always says they look to Grandpa-ish for a modern BMW... so I have been put off so far.

johnrando
09-13-2012, 08:08 AM
LOL Dalton. Yeah, I've discussed that many times. It's really the lighting, as it looks purple-ish at times, and black at times. I do think maybe being in the sun so much may have ever so slightly changed the color, as I've seen other black cube that looks darker, and mine does look more purple-ish in certain light. In this pic, as you can see, the left side looks very purple, but in reality it's not. I do consider it a custom mod - color-changing trim.

nike001
09-13-2012, 08:11 AM
Yeah, sun seems like it would do that.

My car's black cube doesn't seem to give off that purple hue that much. But my car w/ the PO was kept under cover 100% of the time unless it was being driven. Garage at home & parking garage at work. (but now it sleeps outside 24/7, unless I'm at school and I park in a parkade type of thing)

Nice! Yeah, I'm garaged 99.9% of the time unless driving, and the top is down 95% of the driving time. Not sure what the PO did, but the car was so perfect I have to think it was garaged too.

Yeah, I get the same reactions when driving my ///M as well.....people being jealous....sucks to be them...

Unfortunately, you do have to be more defensive in nature to avoid any mishaps... just enjoy your ///M...:thumbsup

wise words from the ///M boys.

I got harassed by a 5.0 Mustang GT today just because he heard my exhaust. F*cker was riding my rear bumper like my name was Jenna Jamison for about 3 miles, revving his engine as he pulled up close then falling back and doing it over and over. If I didn't care with hassling with a busted up car and whip lash I'd have done what the STi did to Kris and just slam on the brakes. At least in this situation it woulda been justified.

It's always the other guys fault in a rear end... (95% him 5% you at least in PA), not saying you should but iv tried very hard to get rear ended before, only because someone tailgates bad, for a long time.
Just the other day some lady was on my ass on her cell phone (illegal in PA) so I brake checked her hard and watched her slam the brakes and her phone fly out of her hand onto the dashboard... Win

Y'all should be careful brake checking someone. You may actually end up seriously hurting someone if they get in an accident. Suppose that you do slam on the brakes and then the other driver veers to the right/left to avoid you causing a much larger accident? That would stink. If people tailgate me like that, I usually just let them pass when practicable.

If someone is tailgating me...I just let my foot off the gas and slow down. They get the point.

Yeah I don't ever do it, though I want to. I usually slow down like Dane. In my old e90 and 1er I'd hit the rear fogs on um sometimes. :p

About a year ago a guy in a minivan brake checked the guy behind him on I-80 here a few miles east of San Francisco. Driver doing the brake checking got hit, van rolled and he died.

I don't brake check anymore.

Exactly! I do what Dane does, as well. I also make it clear that I am looking at them in my mirror. If the slowing down and the glaring don't work, I usually signal by waving. If that still doesn't work, I pull over when practicable.

Last night/today I got a new air freshener.

It's called hibachi. Went to eat with a female last night and while putting the take out box on the backseat floor, noodles and rice came out and got all over. Got the bulk of it out but still got some leftover rice thats giving off a nice fragrance. I just vacuumed it two days ago too. I guess I'll have to do it again today after class since I almost gagged from that smell early this morning going to class

Todd, the nut on the drivers side motor mount somehow loosened up, motor shifted up and out of mount, broke distributor cap, tweaked radiator. The car was only towed a few blocks but I just couldn't tell what was wrong in that (lack of) light.

Oh man....

I thought she was off to get a coat of paint early.

Hopefully it's only the cap and the radiator hasn't suffered too much damage.

Totally guessing here, but the opposing motor mount may be out of alignment? Perhaps the nut wasn't torqued to spec? I have always been suspect of the motor mounts on the 2002 over the years, especially when I have replaced them. Isn't there supposed to be a lock washer in there (obviously I don't remember or know). I'm rambling..

Hermes

yeah, there is a possibility we forgot to put the lock washer on (I'm blaming Steve). I don't like the design of the motor mount at all

This...... I also like to give my windshield a good spray which usually gets the person behind causing them to back off.

But then you're left with water spots that you have to clean off later....
I won't slam the brakes but I will randomly tap it to scare them off. But once, I was on the freeway and an '05ish Mustang (of course it would be a Mustang) cut me off and started to drive super slow on the open freeway. It was an auto and base model so I got in front of him, retracted the sunroof, and let my wad of 5 RPM gum fly out. I didn't expect it to hit his windshield dead center :biggrin

Haha! I do this too.

I found out this trick on accident. I was travelling on the highway and this POS sentra R was trying to keep up with me. Big dude, wife, 2 girls in the back. I used my fluid multiple times to clean off the windshield as it was snowing/sleeting/raining.. so it was messy. Next thing I knew I heard this sentra screaming and just kinda walk past me and then swerve into my lane real fast. Then he just unloaded his fluid. I was raging so hard.. but I learned a trick in the process

Got my transmission and differential fluids flushed at Bullet Performance in Costa Mesa.
75,900 on the clock, but don't know exactly when it was done by previous owner.

Just checked the parts catalog, a spring washer should be present on both mounts.

Interesting, I'll see what Carl has at the shop in a little while. He said he's actually done that same thing before on cars in the past, it's because the nut isn't tightened enough

Edit: car is repaired/running again, will deal with radiator later since its not leaking but just kinda dislodged slightly

Does anyone know the dimension of the Lower Temp sensor O-ring? Its leaking from there.. And where i can get it without buying a whole new sensor?

Pip
09-14-2012, 04:53 PM
Meric,

Here is a pic from Dane. I used the same o-ring from home depot and it had worked perfectly. I had to take the fan out behind the radiator to get to the temp sensor but after that it was pretty easy.

The temp sensor is pretty hard to pull out but just takes some effort. also remember you will loose fluid out the hole you create so be ready to catch it or expect it to get everywhere.

^looks clean, I love it.

I think I'm a freak for manual bmw wagons..

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/cto/3264975990.html

I'm 99% sure if I get another manual bmw wagon it's going to be a E91.

And the one in the CL like is a true example of a car that is OEM+. It has very subtle but quality mods (suspension is the only mod, lol). The only thing I would add is a vinyl black gloss roof, exhaust, and a full oem M-Tech 2 kit and call it a day. Maybe some bbs lm's :)

I'm the same way, I'd kill for a clean e46 wagon, and my dads looking for a new car I'm trying to talk him into a BMW wagon (wish they sold the M5 wagon in the us) or a CTS-V Wagon

Maybe he should consider a S4 Avant? They are very very powerful wagons and also perform great!

Maybe this should go in the pic section, but this is William (wsmeyer) and Jon (jupiter) checking out my Ness, right outside the dock area for Jon's ship. Very cool to meet Jon and this was William's first mafia meeting outside of me. We had a great time hanging and talking ZHPs. :thumbsup
