Oh....got it. Duh. You're saying the jack paaaaaaad fell out! Don't roll with them installed. Keep them in your tool bag, or at least keep one in your glove box. Imho...they fuck up the lines of the car anyways.

I've raised every BMW i've ever owned from the green spot with a 12" chunk of 2x4 on my jack's cup....for the e46 actually slightly aft of that in the space between the fuel filter cover bolts. That's the main structural beam of the whole chassis....I'm not afraid of hurting it.

My protocol is onto ramps, jack on the green spot, jack stand on yellow. repeat other side.

I've got it good with a center jack point under the engine :) After supporting the front I raise the rear from the carrier brace just behind the differential as you view it from the rear. Off the ground in 2 minutes.

They're held in by clips or something along those lines. On the 1-series it's an expanding rivet, no idea on the E46. Probably something similar.

My car is in the shop today getting 2 tires, a premature oil change, and trying to run diagnostics on the comfort access system and DTC. Car won't connect to the BMW software even with manually entering VIN. Now it won't start... ruh-roh!

Be advised...they very easily pop out, after you extend/remove the plastic center pin. This pin is only needed if you plan to roll with them installed. I just pull the pin out, when I get them. They stay in place, enough, to get the jack seated. You'll see what I mean....

As I'm slowly but surely taking over her, I washed her and applied some leather cleaner to the steering wheel.

Also found out that when you click the unlock button on the key, when you hold it down the second click, the convertible top goes down. I knew this from my MINI and figured at most the windows will go down. But I was awesomely surprised when the top went down too.

I'd check all connections across the car, most likely it's one in a door though (if a regulator got replaced and airbag re-plugged improperly). Check steering wheel connection as well.

Most common source (outside of a loose connection somewhere, as mentioned) is the passenger seat occupancy sensor mat, second most common is a seat belt pretensioner wire short (I've had both). If you or someone nearby has INPA or DIS you can read the airbag error & easily pinpoint the fault.

@Crest: I agree with this. I usually get one after vacuuming under my seats and I've banged the connects (I'm guessing), too. I believe Dane has a Peake reset tool for "rent", or you can take it to BMW and have them reset the light. The first time the light came on for me, I waited a long time (months) and when I finally took it to BMW they said it was my Passenger seat sensor mat. They replaced it, then the light came back on and they said I waited to long to get it fixed and I messed up "some overall sensor" and I had to get that replaced. I don't know if that was a load of crap or not, it was before I started DIYing.

I'll have to contact Terra and see if he's around. I didn't do anything outside of driving it, no vacuum or anything. All check all connections I can get to easily

All in all, I think it took about 45-60 min. The lip spoiler is genuine Alpina :)

Installed new interstate B7 battery. Car has been acting strange, passenger headlight did not seem as bright and performance just seemed "off". Went out to the garage on Wednesday and turned the key.............nothing, just the faintest of clicks.

No complaints as the build date is 4/04 and battery was the original.

Is the B7 the one designated to be compatible with the E46? Me thinks I will be in the market for an Interstate soon since they are also '04 original. I do not know what the number '42' on top of the year date on the battery post.

The Interstate I put in mine last fall is an MTP-94R/H7. 765 CCA. Cost me $121.95 back then. I thought I might be having battery issues at the time but it looks like my old original 17/04 OE battery was still good. I charge it occasionally but it holds a 12.7+ volts charge for months at a time between charges. Too bad they are too heavy to ship to someone in need. :-)

Gotcha. Several of us still aren't receiving notifications. Server issues...

Just changed the oil today. Afterward I noticed I slightly went too long between oil changes, 11,500! Dam! Bad ZHP owner! Glad I'm using Mobil 1 synthetic.

I don't think I'm hurting it... I did the same with my old truck which was running like a top when I sold it with 210000 miles on it... I know I can go more miles but I just feel better knowing that I have fresh oil in there and whether its perceived or not I feel like the engine runs smoother and gas mileage stays where I want it... I'm wierd... I know

I don't feel as bad now. My target was 7,500 miles but it was so dam hot here the last few months I put it off. At 11,000 miles it smelled like burnt oil and the filter was pretty nasty.

It's said that the oil is capable of something like 25,000+ miles, but the filter is the thing that can't take that kind of interval.

FWIW, Porsches oil change intervals are 20,000 miles

Started a car enthusiast group online for faculty/students. Originally, the idea was for BMWs only since there's a good number of them out there. But decided to keep it open to everyone. Apparently even most of the modded BMWs are just driven by students who don't care much for them. Like a silver grey 128i vert, silver grey 135i, silver grey 335i with some kind of aftermarket exhaust and other stuff. All driven by girls btw.....

Line up so far: '08 Audi A4, 2 ZHP coupes (me and PHZ), an '06 325i, '10 G37 coupe, etc.

It's a shame. I got all excited because I thought well here's 3 guys and we all have silver grey to get things started. Turns out not only are they all girls but none have any interest....
Same as my work. First day, I noticed 3 E46 coupes parked outside. A powder blue 325Ci, black 330Ci, and a silver 325Cic. All girls, again. None have any interest in BMWs, or their own cars in general.

Magic eraser is the best for cleaning white shoes. I do mine once a week, keep up on it and they will look brand new, that and replace the laces from time to time.

I had the '03 530i do a VCG, CCV, DISA, Oil & Filter replaced over the weekend at 107K mi. on the clock. I did not do VANOS. If it ain't broke, Don't screw with it.

Sliced and diced my bumpstops today doing the front of my suspension. Assembling the struts in house. Had a large miscue and wedged the utility knife into the inside of my left thumb. Best part is after I stopped the bleeding and assembled the strut, I left the boot and bump stop out of the equation :facepalm:

Finished it off with Meg's interior quick detailer and it looks great. Nasty how much crap gets into the wheel

Sliced and diced my bumpstops today doing the front of my suspension. Assembling the struts in house. Had a large miscue and wedged the utility knife into the inside of my left thumb. Best part is after I stopped the bleeding and assembled the strut, I left the boot and bump stop out of the equation :facepalm:

Front passenger side wheel or rotor or something is scraping. Makes a slight screeching noise when turning left regardless of speed.
Going to get balance & alignment done tomorrow, will try to find out what's going on.
Brakes have been getting squeaky too, can't tell if it's rocks stuck up there or if the pads and/or rotors are wearing out.

Because it's at the joint, I have to keep it isolated. I did get impatient and disassemble, install the bump stop and dust boot, and reassemble the Strut when I got back from P.F. Now I just have to install the other one and then I can stop fuxxing with delicate things. Stupid bump stops.

With my Suspension I had to trim the bump stops because the car will be lowered about 1-5/8" and the bump stops will impede suspension travel if they remain the same length. Knife slipped out of the groove I had carved and wedged itself in my thumb. Not a deep cut but it was a bleeder and took me an hour to engineer a band-aid with tape and cotton balls and get the bleeding to stop. It slowed down enough for me to finish my work and then go to the Dr. Was quite intense. To top it off, my dog found a way to get out of the yard and I had to chase him around until my neighbor corralled him in her yard. We had a nice walk back with lots of stern negative reinforcement. All in all, what was supposed to be a fun day turned into a nightmare.

It wasn't a sealed box though, he picked up my lightly used suspension and we put it in an open box. Wasn't trying to be a smart ass, just was curious where he needed to use a knife to prep the new set up for install. And me too, wishing you a quick speedy recovery.

It's freakin awesome. Beads like crazy. A good day or two's worth of rain will take off that crazy beading aspect of it.. but it still beads nicely for a long time after that.

That's good to hear. I use this exact same wax on some previous vehicles that I detailed for a few people. They seem to like it, the price is also amazing!

Yesterday, I went to my BMW dealer to pick up the new key my father-inlaw bought me for my birthday. (I had to order it, in person, so it wasn't a surprise, but I was excited none the less.) I love my BMW dealership sales guys and parts guys. Most know me by name and the sales guys always chat me up about my car and the new exciting cars they've recently got in. But I don't know any of the service dept guys. (I'm setting the scene) So I pick up my new key from the part dept, and Alan tells me I've got to get it programmed by the service dept.

So, I walk over to the service dept, stand in front of a guy with a blank look on his face, and let him know I need my "brand new" key programmed. He stutters for a sec, and asks me to wait a few minutes. I step outside, to look at some cars, and here comes a tech reaching for my keys. We go to my car, he shuts himself in the driver's seat for about 15 minutes. Meanwhile, as I'm outside the car, a couple sales people come over and chat me up about my car and the Frozen Black M5 in the showroom. Very pleasant.

Then, the tech hops out of my car and informs me that I'll need an appointment. He can't seem to code the key. He shows me the key, depresses a button, and says "see how the light isn't coming on", the shows me my old key and how the light works on it. (Great, he thinks I'm an idiot.) He says it's either got a dead battery, or someone has deactivated all the spare keys for my car. I think to myself, "Now I know all BMWs only get 10 spares, but why would someone deactivated the spares?". So I ask why I need an appointment. He says it's so they can check the key to see if they need to reactivate it or do something about the battery.

Still trying to take it all in, I walk inside and make an appointment. Friday, 1pm. So I ask how much is this going to cost. Between $56-115! What!? For the brand new key I just paid $200 for!?!? that should include whatever it takes to make it work!

So get back to the car, and use the new key to start the car. (I didn't think it would work, but I wanted to try anyways.) Since it worked, I turned off the car, pulled the key out and tried the locks. Nothing, and the light didn't light up, as before. A little voice in my head tells me, 1. the keys charge in the ingition while the car's running, 2. this key's probably been sitting for years, 3. I bet it's just dead!

So I start the car, again using the new key, and drive home. Get home, try the door locks with the new key. It doesn't engage the locks but it does light up! The battery was just dead So then I hit the interwebs for coding the new key, find a DIY, and plan to do it tomorrow (today). Have't done it yet, but I'm confident it will work.

Blows my mind.

Wow that is crazy! Thats how it was for my VW. Wanted to make a new key because my old switchblade stopped working. I go to VW they say $150 for the key plus an appointment to program it, which would cost $95-150. And they didnt even know if the key was the issue!

A little OT, does anyone know if BMW can still make the Valet key, not the plastic one, but the regular non remote key with the grey plastic? And what it would cost?

That's crazy Ry. Glad you didn't just go for what they said. I got a flat valet key for my car for $70 at South Bay BMW, but I never use it so you can have it. :biggrin

3. Put the key in the ignition to the "ON" position.
4. Remove the key from the ignition.

8. Repeat 5-7 for a new key.

They do. How else would our key batteries be able to last so long?

The ignition also imprints information in the key like services and little things like if you need windshield washer fluid or brake fluid

The stage 2 is oiled. You don't want the oiled one...imho. The oil will eventually alter your MAF sensor sensitivity. I was totally anal about oiling my filter per procedure as well.

I have the stage one.....with dry filter. Very happy.

If you do go with the oiled....I have an extra filter for you.....so you can always have one clean and ready to go....vice having to wait the ridiculous long time for it to dry....after cleaning, then oiling.

Ya what light? I found out the hard way when I first bought my car the battery is rechargeable. I thought the battery was dead so I got a new battery and opened the key (not fun) to change it. The BMW battery contacts are soldered on. Turns out it just needed programmed, Dam! Anyway you can also charge your remote with a Sonic tooth brush charger, it's the same technology. There is a coil inside of the remote for charging the battery. Pretty cool stuff.

Finally got rid of that rust ring on my rotor. I think it just had to do with getting the pads all bedded in. They have tons and tons of life on them, they're practically brand-new. I did a couple more bedding sessions post cleaning my slide pins, and the ring is totally gone. I noticed that the pads also had that same rust color on them, so it seemed they were making contact but somehow that rust was just staying there? Either way, that was bugging me.

That white line you see there is a tiny bit of pad material that sometimes will be there when you're pulling into a parking space or something along those lines. Comes from hitting the brake, releasing and rolling a tiny bit. But, that looks like 100% contact to me. Good stuff.

E21 got a new OE radiator cap, NGK plugs, and just pulled most of the 80s alarm system. Still have a few wires left on that which I need to pull but they are behind the dash and I don't know how to mess with that section yet. Airbox has been cleaned and scuffed up so I can repaint it. I bought a new OE intake elbow but I think I need some more rubber pieces for the CIS before I change them and put it all back together

Ya what light? I found out the hard way when I first bought my car the battery is rechargeable. I thought the battery was dead so I got a new battery and opened the key (not fun) to change it. The BMW battery contacts are soldered on. Turns out it just needed programmed, Dam! Anyway you can also charge your remote with a Sonic tooth brush charger, it's the same technology. There is a coil inside of the remote for charging the battery. Pretty cool stuff.

Could you post a pic of the charging proceedure with Sonic charger?

if you depress the roundel there is a little flashlight built in that lights up so you can see the lock. You can kinda see the cutout on the left side/bottom of the black plastic part

I agree too.. It looks cleaner. But this is a good change for ~5 months of the year. The rims aren't in the best condition either so this hides the baked on yellow shit pretty well lol

I wonder if Meyle HDs have a break-in time, because about 500-1000 miles later, I've noticed a significant increase in smoothness in steering and tightness at high speed.

Maybe they settled to where they supposed to be?

Light coats. That's all I can say. Don't try to cover it all first shot. Go for 50% coverage maybe first time and work on that and let it dry between coats. I probably have 5-6 coats on mine. These rims I did it on have lots of crevices and angles I have to get, so wheels with more face won't take as many light coats.

Buy the 6-speed knob and a 5-speed emblem separately. I think BMW sells the lighted 5-speed emblems for like $15 or so.

With my 5-6 light coats, I only went though about 75% of one can for one rim. I got 3 cans because that's all lowes had.. I was hoping to get 4. You definitely won't need more than 4. 5 max if you absolutely insane with it.

Get one of those spray trigger things too. My finger kills after applying one coat

- TPMS (possibly the absolute worst aspect of moving from E46 to E82)
- 4 roundel wheel caps

It's in production right now with an 11/2 finish date. I figure it'll hop over here by Thanksgiving or just after depending on the shipping timing.

I used about 1.25-1.5 cans/wheel took all day applying light coats but turned out really uniform and has lasted a solid 5 months or so

Wet sanded a portion of my hood then buffed it with a Porter Cable. Boy, that was fun :) Very time consuming, but the results are amazing, no orange peel, and nor more "etchings" on my paint.. 100% swirl free :)

Here are some picturess

You can kind of see the paint here just isn't "right". It is lacking some clarity, and it just doesn't look sharp like the paintwork on the rest of my car.. This is after 3 passes of M105 on the orange pad. So, I busted out some 2k grit sand paper and went to town.

Thanks! I will try to post up a more detailed thread in the detailing section in a few weeks. I am just waiting to have some more time so I can wet-sand the whole hood. Honestly, I did not think wet-sanding would work, I was going to send off my car to the paint shop in a few weeks to get my whole front end re-sprayed!

I've had the E21 on jack stands this weekend, changed the motor and diff oil need to change tranny today. While I had it up I decided to clean off the underside, I think I've knocked off 10 pounds of road dirt and grime off the underside. Not perfectly clean but a lot better (and there's only so much dust in the air I can deal with)

You are going to have to probably wet-sand it, then buff it with an aggressive polish and pad. It should do the trick, most detailers can do this for you, or you can do it yourself if you have a good buffer.

EDIT: LOVE IT! Before they were installed, at idle or with my foot on the brake all the way, I can feel it vibrating a little. But now it stopped altogether, so I guess it was due to the factory intake. Whatever it was, the BMW Performance one solved it. They told me the filter was dirty though, and should be changed after 5,000 miles max.
Before the ZHP purred, now it sorta growls. Didn't have a chance to floor it to hear the difference loud and clear but it was still evident that it was a little louder. Plus, it certainly felt a little faster overall.

As for the strut bar, I haven't had a chance to corner at a higher speed yet but it does look damn good. Even the guys at the shop appeared to have never seen one before, and the owner of the place had an '04 alpine white ZHP sedan before himself. (Leased it from Assael [Monrovia] BMW, black alcantara interior with black cube trim)

it's from germany and the finish looks amazing. i think i will list my alcantara for sale. it's in great shape. i just don't need two wheels...

Sounds like you got to them first, the owner of the shop told me that when he went, there was only one there. Had no idea the ZHP existed until he saw it by accident

Probably we're on different timelines. I got mine in May '09.

Finally ordered the OEM homelink for my E46. Now I have an extra "option" on the car, and I don't need to keep the garage and gate remote in my car!

I think I got a good deal, $60 shipped via e-Bay, 9.5/10 condition, this thing looks brand new.

But webby, an alcantara wheel is the essence of a ZHP! :(

eh, i think the alcantara seats/aluminum trim are more essential to the ZHP package than the wheel. also remember all the 05+ ZHP coupes got the perf leather wheel which you could argue is just as unique to the ZHP as the alcantara wheel. when i drove bryce's ZHP coupe a few months back, he had just put on a brand new OEM M3 tri-stitch wheel and it felt great. i'm ready for the change.
