JP, all of that work on the M10 and you're just gonna chuck it for a new one? And put that battery in the trunk, son!

Yes - because of this motor my car is basically a 1602... that's not acceptable.
I'm buying a 2L so I at least have the correct displacement, but might put a S14 crank and rods so it's a 2.2. All decisions will be made when we get the new motor and start breaking it down/decide how much we want to spend on it

Put in a fourteen hour day on the car. Went from engine hanging on a cherry picker to completely installed. I started it up just to be sure it would run. It ran poorly as it needs the proper program to be flashed to the DME. After running it for a few, I shut it down and looked under it to see fluid running out of the transmission bell housing. I'm tripping at this point. "WTF did I do wrong?!?!?!" Ok. Drop the skid pan to take a look. Upon closer inspection, its brake fluid running out of the busted clutch slave cylinder. That was a relief. Now its just a quick change out and system bleed and I'm right to go. I'm going to pass out now. I'm a little tired after my day.

To easy my sadness of a broken passenger dash silver cube trim piece (and the complete lack of funding to replace it), I alternated my existing silver cube with some black cube trim. Light switch trim is black cube, center radio and gearshift trim is silver cube, dash passenger is black, both front doors are silver, and rear doors now have black cube.

Should give it a little personality until I can shell out the dough for a replacement dash trim in silver cube fashion. :)

Changed over the ZUSB on my DME to what I believe to be the proper program (it was the one TerraPhantm picked out for me). The shop I went to for service (Boston Motor Werks) recommended I not run LED bulbs. The owner said that they could potentially ruin the LCM itself because of all the mismatching electrical things (I don't remember the actual terminology). After extensive searching on Google, I found no evidence of anyone having that happen to them. I figured it would have something to do with the contact checking of the bulbs, so I just disabled it to prevent that issue from happening until I can get my hands on a set of genuine clears. Will probably be buying used from the UK or something. No effing way I'm paying $399+shipping for a new set. No. Effing. Way.

Does any 1156 have the built-in resistor to eliminate the hyperflash/hyperblinking or any warnings? Or does it have to be a specific brand?

As JP said, 1156 is just the size. In this case, 1156 is a single contact bulb with a BA15s base. The notches are oriented with a 180-degree angle.
1157 bulbs are the other kind used on E46's. Those are a dual contact with a BAU15s base, which has notches that are less than 180-degrees in orientation.
For reference, 1156 is to 7506 as 1157 is to 7507. Pretty much the same.

The ones I have include built-in resistors, so no modifications to the factory harness to add separate resistors is needed. These are also CANBUS bulbs, which have bulb-out warning cancellation chips in them. That tells the LCM that there is indeed a bulb there.
The bulb-out warning still works if there is an issue with the bulb, it just won't detect as missing during the cold and hot checks of the bulbs. In other words = works as intended. :)

When shopping for bulbs, you want CANBUS bulbs with built-in resistors.

My dilemma is that I'm having a very hard time finding CANBUS bulbs with built-in resistors that have a significant amount of LEDs on them. The ones I have are ok at night, but during the day I find them to be severely lacking in intensity. If anyone can recommend POWERFUL CANBUS bulbs, pleeeeeeeease do share...

Honestly, the 6000K generic ones from Khoalty ($20) weren't that bad, it's pretty damn close. I think it could be the slight blue hue that makes it seem brighter, but the Osrams are definitely a little too yellowish looking for me, even though they're not. As in, when you look into the headlights/light, it looks pure white but the road looks yellow. Probably because I got too used to seeing light blue from the previous 6000K bulbs though.

I dropped my 19" summer rim flat on it's face. I picked it up off the garage floor and silver flakes floated around like something magical happened. Yeah, 90% of the rim was chipped off. :( Not even a rolling fall....straight on it's face...BAM! Time for a winter project to paint it! Does anyone know what kind of silver paint I can use to color match VMR silver???

Got a quote about replacing my occupancy sensor mat from my local indy BMW shop.

Parts + Labor + tax, $465.98 out the door, and a 30,000 mile, 30 month warranty on the repair.

IMHO, seeing as the part costs $141.95, and seeing as the project is supposedly very difficult and extremely time consuming, not to mention not well documented at all, I think this is completely worth it. Especially with that warranty. This is a failure-prone part, and if I repair it myself but the mat stops working again, that's just a huge annoyance and expense.

had my OE thermostat replaced AGAIN this week. this is the 2nd OE one to fail. shop put in a Behr this time...it's covered under warranty so I'm just glad they caught it.

also had my windshield washer pump and nozzles replaced as well.

also since i am going to Austin and New Orleans in the next week, i had the shop do a trip check to make sure all is tip top. they noted a slight leak from OFHG and a couple squeaky tensioners and said the oil pan gasket is "8/10" condition but otherwise said she's good to go. OFHG will be addressed soon i guess...ugh.

i would like to get a wash/detail in but with 2 upcoming road trips what's the point right?!

Engine is smooth as butter, so my only guesses right now are:

Hopefully it's that simple. I'll get them read tomorrow.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I moved to Colorado and the elevation is throwing off the MAF? :dunno

My fronts still have a little left to the but I'm planning on a complete new set in the spring. For how hard I pushed these I am very satisfied with how they performed. The only thing I will note is that for the last few months I never turned off the DSC if it was moist because of its happy tail.

So at the MFEST meet I was at last night, this guy had an '01 silver 330Ci (or so he said) with a beat-up M3 bumper that was literally hanging off and about to fall, a large fold in the corner of the stock hood, no fog lights although the covers were there.......silver roundel that wasn't new, just degraded down to the, well, silver, mismatching wheels in the front and back, trunk with scratched up lip spoiler (like the ones ZHPs have), a black-and-red trunk roundel, broke & exposed passenger side mirror and mismatching stock xenon headlights.

Guy was alright....so I didn't say anything. Just pretended everything was in perfect condition and asked what his next mods were going to be, etc. But he definitely didn't know what a ZHP was. Only one dude last night knew what it was and said he wanted one originally but couldn't find one (he has an E92 328i).
After I went home last night I looked at the ZHP and said, I'm sorry you had to see that.

I'm not trying to sh*t on his ride but I swear, that car was the most neglected (but running) BMW I've ever seen in my life.
There was a photographer there with a tripod and DSLR (or whatever it's called) taking up-close shots, group shots, etc.
He didn't do any up-close shots of his. :rofl

My shop noted my intake boot should be replaced. Chances are, that's what I need to do. I got it cleared, I expect it to come back again at some point. My car died on me today.

Started my car after my dad and I got back from dinner to let it warm up before I left (I never do this). 5 minutes later I go out to leave and my traction control/ABS/BRAKE lights are on. Sheet. Then I decide I don't want to drive home with all those systems inactive on my cold trip home with ice and the possibilities of deer.

Shut the car off, went to turn on... click click click. She's dead! After a jump, she ran.. but oddly. interior lights were really dim & flickering, then low beams dim/flickering, and then the tc/ABS/BRAKE lights came on, went off in place of the airbag light. Then my tach in my cluster wasn't working. Wasn't sure about speedo as I wasn't moving. Sat for a minute and it regained itself and I drove off in hopes of making it home OK.

So. Alternator or battery? Or both?

kayger12

Battery is probably OE.

But if it was the battery I would have thought it would be just dead. Not dead after the car was started and running fine and then turned off for 3 seconds.

How do I tell if my alternator is Valeo/Bosch?

Crickett
12-23-2012, 07:30 PM
I'd start with the battery: it's far easier to pull & have tested (& potentially replace) than the alternator & the E46 is known to act all sorts a fool when it's running on a weak battery.

And yes, I know how a car's electrical system works (battery for starting & alt for engine-on ops) & that my advice is a bit counter-intuitive given the symptoms, but there are far fewer reports of bad alternators than bad batteries. /$0.02

Check the output in the battery terminal. Correct me if I'm wrong...at least 14.3 VDC. That is the output of the alternator charging the battery. Anything lower...then the alternator is asking for help.

BCS_ZHP
12-23-2012, 07:33 PM
Dalton,
I'm guessing battery. At idle, you aren't turning enough rpms to really throw a good charge from the alternator over to the battery. All the lights and instruments are using up the lower amperage the alternator is putting out at idle, you've got to rev it up a bit for the amount of amps the alternator is producing to have some extra to charge the battery too.

And this cold spell isn't helping, had to replace the battery on my S10 this morning, it left my son stranded last night. I drove it yesterday and it was fine, he called to tell me it was dead in the parking lot at work and wouldn't jump, I charged my jump start box overnight and couldn't get it started this morning. I dropped a new battery in and everything is fine again.

nike001
12-23-2012, 07:38 PM
Thanks for all the help fellas. Got more replies than I had thought.

I'll try to get the battery tested tomorrow and see where I'm at. It seems that with other alternator stories that the red battery light comes up on the dash, and I didn't have that. Hopefully I'll be able to just get a new battery at worst.

Hermes
12-23-2012, 10:12 PM
mine acted up funny in other ways when the battery was on its way out. I'm gonna bet on your battery too.

Sunday I found out what happens when you put stickier tires up front than in back and then drive on a wet track--a back end that wants to break loose! Woke up at 3am, dropped family at airport 5am, went home. Left home at 6:30am, arrived at track 9:45am. Signed up for Speed Ventures Black which is high intermediate but did first first session in Blue (low intermediate). Being the 2nd fastest driver in Blue made me feel pretty good, but then I went out in Black and was the slowest or 2nd slowest driver in that group the rest of the day, which was humbling given that there are two faster groups above Black.

In back were stock wheels with used (about 6,000 miles) Bridgestone RE-760 tires, 255/35/18. In front were new (1 track day, 1 AutoX day) Continental ExtremeDW tires in 245/40/17. Figured they'd have about the same grip--WRONG! Front end gripped pretty well on wet track but back end didn't. For last session I turned off DSC and managed 25 minutes okay--besides being slow--until a spin on the last lap. You can see the spin here, skip to 26:40 in the video. At least I remembered to put the clutch in and they didn't have to tow me out. I survived that corner okay at 2:40, 5:53, 8:50, 11:53, 14::30, 20:45 and 23:50, so why loop on the last lap? Looks like I was apexing that corner about 40mph on the other laps but 50mph on the last one, plus maybe lifted during the turn...

DW's are pretty sticky!! I have those on my car and grip seems to be pretty aggressive even though tread wear is longer than the average ultra high performance summer. So I'll get an extra season out of them as well as still have fun. The problem with such grippy tires is that the limits are so illegally high to enjoy what they offer on the road. I need like a Tercel with 13" 165 tires to drive it 9/10ths at 25mph. LOL

That always in an interesting setup! How were you doing on the wet track? Looks like it was a lot slower of a day than usual.. On a dry day I think I take sunset around 60mph? Looks like you just got a wet spot and just lost traction. Though, it also looks like you were going into the corner hot. I can't really see your tach but top is 80mph and I can see you still at 80 at the beginning of the outside entrance rumble strips. I'm glad nothing crazy happend when you spin! That corner gets a lot of people and the inside spin into the K-wall is no bueno...

I do like that Speedventures has two advanced groups. I think I would be somewhere inbetween Red/Green. The cars in RED are usually crazy fast and I feel like I would be a moving cone to them..

Don't be afraid of breaking something in just general education of this. If you are all out of common sense when driving you'll break something but I believe you have more than that from your statement. If something breaks when you are learning advanced driver techniques, it's because you needed to fix it!! Better have it fail at a track with hopefully plenty of safe runoff than a public street with pedestrians and many solid unmovable objects. You'll come in with fear and leave with respect which will far make up what you will save in the long run rather than making mistakes on public roads and crashing.

Fear of breaking something isn't a very good reason, mainly because you won't be going nearly fast enough to lose control or break something on the car. Give it a dozen or so track events and then perhaps you'll be pushing it to the limit. It takes a long time to actually max the car out; nobody goes out on their first time out and drives it to the limit the right way. There is nothing to fear; driving on the track is safer than driving on the street because everyone is paying 100% attention to driving. Nobody's yakking away on their phones. Nobody is texting. Nobody is putting on makeup, or drinking coffee. Don't even worry about yourself. Just stay focused and you'll be alright. :thumbsup

What Rovert said... don't be afraid of breaking something your first track day, or the 2nd or 3rd. If you're a fast learner (I'm not, it turns out, a fast learner for track days), by the 4th or 5th you might risk a money shift. But otherwise if your car maintenance is up to date, the only things you can break the first few times are overheating the brakes (solved by having fresh Ate blue/Typ200 fluid) and wearing the outside edges of the front tires. This all assumes you don't hit a wall of course. The good news is that being in SoCal, most of the tracks don't have many walls (Streets of Willow, Buttonwillow, Chuckwalla), or have good runoff room in most places (Willow Springs, AutoClub Speedway). And/or you can buy HPDE insurance for between $85 and $125 per weekend (for typical ZHP--more expensive cars cost more to insure) from Lockton Affinity. There are lots of checklists available online on things to inspect and what to bring to the track.

For the safest, most controlled, and most expensive track day, wait for a BMW CCA day. For something much cheaper, slightly looser, but still with instruction and safety rules (and sometimes crowded run groups), there's NASA. For more relaxed, less instruction, and less crowded, I like Speed Ventures. And for the generally least expensive and most relaxed So Cal track days I've tried, there's ExtremeSpeed, usually running at Big Willow and Streets of Willow. In fact I'm hoping to do one of their track days this weekend, Dec 29-30. It will be cold (below freezing in the morning) but probably won't rain.

It wasn't my plan to make the back-end loose! I just figured I could get away with swapping out only 2 tires instead of 4. When the track was almost dry in our 2nd session, the grip felt good, but when it was wet, the back felt loose. Yes, my speedo indicates I was approaching it around 80mph and going about 10mph faster through the turn than the times I didn't spin in that session. Plus I hit the apex tight, which is normally what you want to do, but maybe not on a wet day! I was experimenting with driving the dry line and trying other lines to get more grip.... maybe that experimenting should be done with DSC on?

I was already a moving cone of sorts in Black, though I think my best laps were faster than the very slowest driver in Green.

I said a while ago that I thought I had spotted one of the rare, limited edition E92 M3s in a frozen paint finish (either red, white, or blue [Go 'murrica!!!]).
I saw this on campus more than a few times and I didn't see the driver but I assume it's a student.

Is it truly one of the limited edition ones? It's definitely an E92 vert.
But the exhaust and lack of M3 badging on the trunk make it hard to say definitively if it's an M3 or just a heavily-modded E92 335i.
Because according to the article, production for the U.S. market doesn't begin until Jan '13. And also, the paint can be done at a shop and the body kit & side skirts don't look like the ones off the factory.

Yesterday was the bulk of my Inspection II; new plugs, new oil, replaced a leaky upper coolant hose; everything else engine-wise checks out. Rear tires have been ordered and will be done on Monday; I'm doing front brakes on Monday as well. Started at 27F then 36F, then the afternoon was almost sunny at 47F. We even saw a few snowflakes! I discovered that 36F on a dry track is still a lot more grip (once tires warm up) than 50F on a wet track. At least with my tires.

So now that Dynavin will be turning into a Sprint Booster (w/Sport button mod), angel eyes, & a Dice MediaBridge. :roundel

iP5. Tapatalk. Bauce.

I'd take that stuff over a Dynavin any day. Good call. :thumbsup

Today I looked at my car and shook my head at how dirty it is. Snow+salt FTL. It's supposed to snow again tonight though. I can't wait to rinse her off...

Replaced my ZKW with an AL headlight assembly. Switched out the mounting bracket and all, only took about 40 minutes.

Rinsed off the salty shit off Wobbie. Tomorrow I will follow up with ONR.

Count me in for rinsing it off. Salt and snow marks behind the fenders and dirty rims.

I beat on my car at the track on a cold, cold day. Well not cold by Midwestern or New Englander (or Qubecois) standards, but cold for Southern California (high desert). Started at 27F then 36F, then the afternoon was almost sunny at 47F. We even saw a few snowflakes! I discovered that 36F on a dry track is still a lot more grip (once tires warm up) than 50F on a wet track. At least with my tires.

I have real time pressure monitor and temp gauges in my wheels. They take a reading every 7 seconds I believe. When I am just driving on the street and if the temperature is 40F. After a a few minutes of street driving and a few minutes on the highway, my tires warm up to about 60F. In LA, CA I remember my tires getting up to 110F when it was about 90F out. LOL.

When it's freezing my tires will warm up to about 50F-55F. So I know when you are driving your tires hard on the track, temperatures will go up significantly higher than street driving! I know at 60-70F when I had Toyo T1S tires, the rubber seemed like it was melting off from every corner after the 20 minute heat. I could press my finger into the rubber. Good thing for those cool down breaks!!

Can this front license plate holder thing be removed from the car without holes or damage? This is on a ZHP I am potentially buying.

Nope, that looks like the one that was on mine. Pretty sure you're going to have holes there.

I removed it and then had the holes filled and the bumper resprayed.

Gross :/. I guess I'll cover it up with a euro plate for now.

That was my plan B if the bumper respray was going to be too much.

Now I think about doing the euro plate anyway.

As a matter of fact-- day off, coffee and iPad in hand....

What you really should be doing with your day off is researching how to swap out a leather for a cloth/alc interior. Consider that an assignment, sir.

Keith, check this place out: http://www.customeuropeanplates.com/.

I was surprised at the price too. Not bad at all for a custom one + the ///M euro plate holder.

You can try. I haven't gotten stopped yet. Been almost two years.

I figured if it became a hassle and I got stopped, I'd put it back on.

The fact that there are about 3,000 less cops than there were in this state a few years ago probably helps.

Well, today I get to say I actually did something on my ZHP... Today I am spending the day removing a few things and putting on the OEM parts that I have... Kind of sad, but still working on a car, which is always fun... :)

Hey Keith, I found this for a Euro plate... http://skenedesign.com/FPBracket/Euro.shtml i have the standard version that I've never used if anyone is interested...

Our cops here in Wenonah Bourough are pretty board... besides, they've seen Kpro and I riding our golf cart all over the place and they have left us alone... don't want to mess with that lol

Cool. Thanks. I'm just window shopping it right now. I've been going back and forth on the euro for years.

Every time I get close I realize what a beautiful bumper the Mtech II is clean.

While I haven't been contemplating one for years, I do kind of like the idea of having one hanging in my garage. I've been browsing the site that Connor posted... Good looking stuff on there... :shifty
