Cleaned up the engine bay a little, there was a ton of dust and some small debris here and there.

While uploading the pic above, the security code was this:

Pretty excited since it (the intake) is my first official performance (+HP) mod. Whether it was interior or exterior, I was always used to doing visual/aesthetics mods before even in my other E46.

Ahhhh, I'm so excited I finally get to contribute to this thread again!!! :biggrin :biggrin :biggrin

I just placed the order for my exhaust... Dinan of course! Today is the last day for their 15% off sale, so I decided to go for it.

Of course, the dealer said I would need to purchase the two pipe clamps separately, at $40/each... I couldn't believe that Dinan wouldn't include them, so I called Dinan direct and yes, they are in fact included in the box... Not sure what is up with the dealer... :shifty

But anyway, super stoked! When I get home, I should have a complete new brake package and exhaust waiting for me! :)

Looks good Jonathon. Dinan is having a 15% off sale that ends today, so I took advantage and bought their STEP s/w. There are only a few companies that do it, and the place to install was well recommended and an easy drive away. The shifts are now quicker and crisper. It's not a big difference, but it is a difference, and I like the results. The quicker shifts really help in M mode.

EDIT: Great news Jon. We must have been posting at the same time as I didn't see yours. Looking forward to the review.

Yeah I saw their discount on Facebook for a while now, thought about getting their intake, performance software, and high flow throttle body but then I saw that their locations are way up there in NorCal...
Btw, you can just call me Jko for short, since there's more than a few Jon's around here. JKO works too but it feels like I'm getting yelled at with all caps :eeps

Rinsed the salty shit that this BS hurricane blew on my car (while parked in BETWEEN two houses mind you, no more than 15 feet apart).

Before:

And now, the wheels look BALLIN' clean:

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/az3579/Automotive/BMW%20E46%20330i%20ZHP/Exterior/4040B5C2-1F07-4FE1-98B2-BF8A89B90119-10912-00000FE21183FB17.jpg

Didn't wipe the rest of the car because that would have scratched badly. This wasn't a full wash, just a power rinse with Sonax and car wash water. Bad for paint, but a helluva lot better than salty shit covering my open areas in the paint such as rock chips and the scrapes I have on the side...

nice!

The ONLY problem i found with that space is the fact peeps sometimes squeeze past and allow their bags to brush against the car... but you may have alleviated that by the proximity to column.

We should try to see if either space adjacent to ours opens up sometime today to move them beside each other for the mafia photograph.

No, the ratchet is the low budget Craftsman 3/8ths, non-swivel head that normally comes in an entry a level socket set.

For the last couple of days I have been hearing a low growling when starting up around the driver side of the engine, sound like around the floorboard by the pedals. For home for the gym yesterday and I decided to research it. Went out to the vehicle and car would not start. I had just park it 5 mins before. Was about to go to Julian in my only day off this week. Turned out to be the fuel pump. Replaced fuel pump and filter. Also replaced spark plugs. Runs way better with new plugs. Feels like a lot more power. I am just glad that it decided to break down here in my driveway and not Julian which is about an hour from here.

So the wife swapped cars today and drove my coupe for the first time. Less than 5 minutes after she left my cellphone rings, it was something like "wow, this coupe shifts crisper than my vert, can we make mine shift like this". Another 5 minutes and a call, she says " I just went down XYZ road with the ess turns, this coupe feels tighter in the turns, how come my car doesn't handle like that". I try to explain the differences in structural rigidity between a coupe and vert, she doesn't buy. A few minutes later she calls again to tell me my car doesn't have the 4K rpm stutter like her car does, she's tached it up several times and no stutters. I tell her the car needs a software update but she says we had that done at the dealer this summer and it didn't cure it. i agree and tell her we might have to look beyond the dealership to fix this.

My rather simple extrapolation of my wife's comments is she wants a SSK, a cup kit or coilovers, and a Shark Injector. Did any of you other guys interpret that the same way?

When I was at the gym I was thinking to myself that if something actually broke I would know what to fix. Noises really annoy me since they come and go and you can't never figure it out. Then 10 mins later it broke down. What do you know. My fiancé was really exited to go to Julian. The weather was perfect. I have a friend that used to work at a BMW dealer. I supplied the parts from carquest( they carry oem). So I'm hoping to go next week before the weather gets bad( for California standards). I really like the burgers at Miners Diner, then walk around and later some pie with ice cream. And the ride up there is amazing. My friend said that the spark plugs were to the point where in a little more I would be getting misfire codes. Perfect, right on time. But my fiancé was a little disappointed we could not go.

Spent a couple more hours today plasti-dipping my winter rims.

Removing the pre-existing plasti-dip is a pain, but I've figured out how to make it easier and faster. Still a pain though. I only have 1 more rim to take the dip off of, and I'm 100% done with one, about 75% with the other, and just did the first 50/50 coat on the other. Hopefully will be done by Monday.

this is one of the very many reasons why I'm glad I'm friends with Carl...

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c288/jhermes/320i/61AF838B-446F-40BF-BC8B-43F62046B35F-5620-00000680AA200DA3.jpg

for those of you that are too young to realize what that is, it is the 1982 equivalent of DIS. That's a real factory blue book, NOT a reprint... the advantage of borrowing shiesse from a guy that's been around forever.

---------------------------------------------------------

Side note,
Koni no longer make product for anything older than E30 so I'm kinda screwed when it comes to the E21. Carl thinks 323i suspension will fit but he hasn't done an E21 in a while so he doesn't exactly remember. Also (kinda an important issue), he hasn't actually seen my car in person to get a true idea of what issues might be present.

He thinks that the late models have the right strut carrier to hold the larger 323 insert (36 vs 32, but I may be very wrong... I've had a beer since I heard these numbers). Basically this started because I was gonna get KYB's but he said get HD's. Then it became a price issue and he said he thinks he has good used a set of the "upgraded" 323 Billy's (larger diameter than 320) that will cost me way less than a set of brand new 320 HD's which are lower quality struts/shocks vs 323 version even if they are used.

Not sure what to do... opinions?

I value the options of current/former /02 owners very highly... but those of you who fall into that category already know that.

Thanks!

too expensive, I would rather buy cheap but decent struts/shocks and save for coilovers than drop a bunch of money on a custom valved set that I will eventually replace. This is the main reason why I'm considering the used 323 inserts if they work on my "late" car

The ship runs up and down, up and down. We haven't been down to CA in a few weeks though... Our typical run starts in AK, then down to SoCal, then up to Washington, and then back to Alaska to load again and start all over. :)

Currently we're bringing down 1 million barrels of oil, eventually to be refined for all of these cars that we obsess over...!

You can thank me later. :rofl

I am extremely busy this trip south too. I have to rebuild injectors today for one engine, another one tomorrow, and a full overhaul on one of the fuel purifiers.

So, if you need something, let me know in the next day or so, and I'll see what I can do.

As for TMS, you are correct sir, brakes all around!

Is that the Dynavin D99 or the D99+?

Jupiter, that looks like the Dynavin unit, which is modeled after the OEM nav but it does so much more. I think I will buy one for my E46 next summer!

I was thinking the more expensive set may last longer? Couple that with limited duty and the should last many years? No?

Sent from Williamsburg, VA USA

Yes, I can see how that makes sense if it were the ZHP or the 2002, but whatever I get for the E21 I don't plan to have them on the car for long. Spending a bunch of money on a part that I won't use for long to just replace it later with a full coilover setup doesn't seem like a good plan to me. Right now I'm thinking if the used 323 HD's fit then I will rock those temporarily until I get around to a full upgrade.

No prob though, young Brett gets his learners permit one month from yesterday and I want him schooled on different vehicles, he can't be an E46 only driver. No matter what he ends up driving eventually, he is being taught on a 3-pedal and will be proficient with a manual by the time he gets his license next Labor Day.

That shouldn't be too hard at all. I assume a 1/4" drive handle with a few long socket extensions doesn't fit?? Or perhaps a T-handle allen wrench...??

At work, they finally finished re-paving the blacktop parking lot so there's no more uneven bumps or cracks. They also re-drew the parking lanes but they look smaller in width or at least the same.

I couldn't find a spot that was right next to the curb or a last spot in a row but there were ones in between other cars. I had the choice of parking right in front where it was convenient and safer for me or 1/4th of a mile in the wayyyy back of the hotel parking lot where it was dark and shady but safer for the ZHP.

I chose the safer route for the ZHP haha

Also just discovered AutoCarbon's CF interior panel overlay kit (for the cube trim) and also for the vinyl. On the fence so far about buying both....

So busy with my kitchen remodel that I have no time to change my oil like I normally do so I'm at the freekin dealer of all places paying for it and being mocked by 2 M3s and an M5 whispering "spend money you don't have so you can look cool!" No thanks...I'll keep it old school and drive mine til the wheels fall off... I should stop talking to strange cars

Jesus you can see that crack from space!

I got under the car today and fucked around looking at things. This is what my fuel filter and regulator look like:

6242

6241

The regulator has three hoses attached to it. One is the return line, it comes from the back of the regulator and moves to the left of the image. Then there is a single fuel line that comes off of the filter and moves into the regulator and then up to the fuel rail. the return line from the rail passes back through the regulator and then into the gas tank. And you can see the electrical connection...I'm not sure how that will affect things, but I unplugged it and started the car, gave it some gas and let it get warm, no issues arose. So I'm hoping it'll be fine to just delete that wiring.

Tomorrow is the big install day. I'll be installing the M54 Fuel Rail and the 330's 24#/hr injectors with the proper filter and regulator. Hoping to gain 5-10 MPG because city driving is netting me around 14...

after getting two separate opinions on the smog test it has been determined I need a new cat as the one in the car was already a replacement. I'm thinking that not passing smog a while ago and not wanting to fix it was probably the reason it sat unused for so long. I will deal with that tomorrow but tonight I will be putting in the Billy HD's to help out my comfort and stance a bit.

Might just be over-sensitive like mine. About 4000 miles after an oil change it will get down to around the halfway mark on the dipstick and occasionally come on after shutdown. It will only happen after a short drive though....around 5 miles or so. I also noticed that if I turn the ignition on before a cold start and turn it off again and then fire it up it won't do it. I even changed the sensor before realizing it was just very sensitive.....didn't make any difference.

Looks great Charlie! I have GOT to get a PC for next spring so I can do my car. There are so many fine scratches/swirl marks that would be easy to get rid of with a good polisher and the right products. Thankfully there is not a single dent or door ding anywhere on the car. Quite a bit of road rash in the front bumper though.

With a snowstorm predicted I changed the oil on mine Wed. and pumped up the tires to 43 psi to help prevent flat spotted tires. Also added some Seafoam to stabilize the fuel. We ended up getting 9" of snow yesterday and since I won't drive it on snowy or wet roads it might be sitting for a while. Hopefully it will be a mild winter like last year and I will get to drive it a couple of times a month or so. That 9" was over half of the total snowfall for all of last winter! Not a good sign. :-(

yeah, i searched on all the bmw forums and am hoping it's just a little sensitive. prob not a sensor issue as that tends to be indicated by the yellow light staying on after ignition is started.

also, i forgot to mention these tidbits:

- my sunroof visor thing broke. the actual sunroof operates fine but the visor shade came off the track and while trying to re-attach it i heard what sounded to be clips or pieces of plastic breaking. now the thing is all jacked up. sigh.

- after just filling up my wiper fluid reservoir a couple weeks ago, the light came on the other day. i popped the hood and inspected the actual tank...no leaks or cracks. however i did notice a slow drip of fluid from the lines underneath the hood up at the top near the cabin filter vent. is it common to develop leaks in those lines? that seems like a random thing to go.

And of course if there aren't any pictures it didnt happen lol

Also there was a small little gap, between the plastic and the valve cover gasket, let me know if this is normal until it seats. Refer to last picture

Mine doesn't sit like that, but if it doesn't leak just leave it be.

FYI, you only need RTV on the corners of the half moons front and rear.

I started out that way but i saw other people online do it also around the side screws on the edge of the vanos area
so i just put RTV most of the way around the vanos area (front area) but nowhere else lol, it would make it very difficult if i were to ever change it again if i did it all the way around

I think I pulled this off an E28, maybe it was an E23... can't remember. Apparently 9/85-> production (86 MY) has a different spline count so you can't use anything after that date. 2 oil filler caps off a E30 318s (no pic), a set of strut dust caps from an E23 (I think I can make them work)... and probably something else I'm forgetting right now.

I was very lucky to find a Fjord 1978 320 to pull parts off...

320i got:

new rear bumper trim rubber
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c288/jhermes/320i/IMG_4189.jpg

I know, not exciting. The old one has a big gash on it so it's just a temporary solution until I deal with Euro bumpers. Old:

120 MPH speedometer!!!! This guy on eBay is asking $165 (buy it now): ebay.com/77-79-BMW-320I-E21-VDO-INSTRUMENT-SPEEDOMETER-CLUSTER-GAUGES (http://www.ebay.com/itm/77-79-BMW-320I-E21-VDO-INSTRUMENT-SPEEDOMETER-CLUSTER-GAUGES-79k-MILES-78-/230710762214?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories &hash=item35b76edae6&vxp=mtr)

I'm just gonna pull the speedo gauge and put it in the other cluster
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c288/jhermes/320i/IMG_4194.jpg

the stock one in late builds has a digital clock, and the clear plastic on the one in the car right now is in better shape

my thoughts exactly. I love the mirror. Mine is all antiqued and hardly usable, this seems like a great replacement!

Thanks guys. Todd, at first I didn't think it would work because there is that lighted display panel thing up there on E28's but I just pulled at it and it came out with a rubber grommet thingy. It was the perfect fit (well... it takes a little persuasion to put it in but you probably know that already).

So it works and speedo is fairly accurate, only a few mph under like usual with German cars. I only got up to 50 so tomorrow I'll test it on the freeway.

Unfortunately there was an issue (02 through E30 owners will know what I'm about to say). The gears on the odometer are broken, doesn't do anything. Pretty sure I can cannibalize the 80MPH one since that one works. I'll have to get that fixed but for now mileage is free... kinda.

Thanks Ry and Justin. Well, the gremlins have sprouted overnight. Now the speedo doesn't even come close to reading correctly. It has a high pitched whine, by 20MPH it reads 60, and by 40 MPH it was almost all the way around and about to hit the little rest for the needle at 0... so I just disconnected the speedo cable for now. I'll just keep my HUD app on so I know how fast I'm going

Hmm. Sounds like a VDO odometer, they are notorious for bad gears on older VWs, like my once upon a time '86.5 Scirocco. But MotoMeter was also a supplier, and theirs of the same period are dead-nuts reliable. I see you have a MotoMeter tach, I wonder if the speedo is VDO?

Either way, North Hollywood Speedometer can almost certainly rebuild it, should you want to go that route...

Thanks Kevin, I'll definitely call them soon. As for the speedo, yes it is a VDO. It's hard to see in the pic but it's stamped on the back just below the cable.

As for progress today managed to get the bumper trim strip on, looks much better. I am now having a beer at the "generational meeting" at our local pizza place. Manny, owner of the E30, hasn't seen the E21 yet.

Edit: called the speedo shop this morning, about $160 and a 5-7 day turnaround. I'll probably send it in next week

I just ordered a new thermostat. Now that the temps are getting colder here I've noticed that my needle isn't moving out of the 'blue' range on the gauge. My heat is pretty much luke warm at max setting, and after searching the threads here for a couple hours I decided to try the thermostat. I checked under the hood when I got to work today and the hoses going into and out of the the thermostat were pretty warm, not hot, so I don't know if that is an indicator as well.

Any thoughts?

Noticed some small snow accumulation outside my house today as I was getting ready for my 8am class. Get out to my car and it's covered in slush. Fantastic!

35 degrees and mostly wet roads on my summer tires. Hit a patch of ice about 3 feet long.. that was fun. Good thing I saw it and got the car straight and slid across it and kept doin my thang. No other problems. I really need to get my winter tires on....

Took apart my intake down to the throttle body to diagnose a rough idle: started as an ICV inspection & will end with a rebuilt DISA & new upper & lower intake boots. Yay common E46 problems!

Been home one freaking day, and already the ZHP is at the dealer for a flat. I paid for nitro fill before I left which comes with 1 year free service, otherwise I wouldn't bother.

I will say this though, 68 days and the car didn't move, and there were no flat spots. So, I'm a nitro believer. :)
