As far as what I did today, it's now part of a new project thread. Aspherical Euro mirrors, aluminum foot pedals, no-holes license plate delete, re-badge, V1/StealthOne is in and apparently working, and a (so far) failed C/F diffuser install.

I took the ZHP in to the Dealer today to have my oil changed and have my service engine soon light checked.
I had Autzone run the codes last month and had an error for Rich Bank 1 and Rich Bank 2. Noted problems, Oxygen sensor and there are 4. Knowing that I agreed one Hr labor to check it out. I received a call this morning telling me that that was the code but the fix was to Reprogram the control unit, "computer". Apparently they can loose communication with each other. They also suggested having the engine Smoked to check for possible vacuum leeks. I went for the reprogram but not the Smoke. So far so good. At this point I have only drove it home from the Dealer bout 25 miles. I'll keep you posted if anything changes. FYI, I have yet to experience the 3k stumble that has always been there.+++

Replaced the headlight washer pump. If yours don't work, here's how I determined it was the pump:

1. Waited until all my fluid was gone.

2. Took out the pump. It's the first pump directly in front of you. It literally just comes right out of the tank with a surprisingly small amount of effort. Take out the grommet, too. You can clean the screen while it's out.

3. I found a 12V power supply and stripped it. It was like 5 amps which is way too much for that little thing, but it didn't kill it :)

4. I made a guess as to which was ground and power

5. I connected the two wires to the connectors in the pump

6. I heard the motor running (really fast cause I was giving it 5 amps), but I saw that the impeller wasn't moving

7. The pump is really hard to get apart, and I couldn't figure it out to try and fix it. So I said screw it, and bought a replacement.

8. A BMW headlight washer pump is a waste of money. It's a super non-critical part, so cheap aftermarket is the way to go here. Even if it broke, two are cheaper than one BMW headlight washer pump. I got this: http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?ff3=4&pub=5574947307&toolid=10001&campid=5336776893&customid=&mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.com%2Febaymotors%2FBMW-E46-E90-X5-E60-E65-E66-Z4-X3-HEADLIGHT-WASHER-PUMP-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem20b67cfed6QQitemZ14050 0598486QQptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccesso ries%23ht_4688wt_939

9. Got it today, compared the two, found that they are literally the exact same part, but $40 cheaper, and installed it by just simply popping it in.

10. ????

11. Profit!

Also, I found that my wipers tend to squeak and I have been using RainX wiper fluid. It definitely does its job, and very well, but with automatic wipers I don't see much of a use for it on my windshield since they react instantly. It seems to make my windshield quite dry when it's raining (which is a real benefit), but I think it makes them squeak obnoxiously. I'll give an update to see if it helps. I just got the regular ol' Peak -20F fluid this time around. The reason why I think so is because when I clean them with isopropyl alcohol, which dries the wipers out, they squeak even worse.

I'm really considering the aspherical euro mirrors because one of my mirrors is rusty, and the other is starting to rust. Plus, a blind-spot mirror would be awesome. But they're so expensive! $200 for mirrors is a hard buy.

Oil change and replaced oil level sensor. A couple of times in the last month after a short, first drive of the day, after shut down the yellow light would come on for a bit. First time I saw it I had just checked the oil before leaving so at least it didn't panic me when I saw it. It maybe could have waited till it got more frequent but I guess I'm just too picky about any issues on the ZHP.

Also, I don't think I mentioned it here but about 6 weeks ago I had the BMW Performance suspension kit installed at 90,000 miles. It's basically just the stock ZHP struts/shocks and control arms. Also installed the Xi strut tower reinforcement plates on the top of the struts. The control arms actually feel like they could have even gone a bit longer, the ball joints still feel free of any excess play. The shocks/struts feel a little less harsh but they probably could have went longer too.

I spent close to an hour cleaning that rust proofing crap they use off of the reinforcement plate but I still missed a few spots. Looks alot better than it did though. Starting to button things back up......

http://mrmaico.smugmug.com/Cars/BMW-ZHP-misc/i-9zxHx66/0/L/IMG1256-L.jpg

The hydraulic jackstands I use when I need the front higher or if I need the front wheels off. They work great! Another great help was my Makita cordless impact wrench. If it's something you don't have and do a lot of wrenching it's a great time saver. It made short work of removing and re-installing those 8 reinforcement plate bolts. Hardest part of this whole project is final tightening of those bolts while laying on your back. 43 ft/lb + 90 degrees.

Finally made time to replace Vanos seals and VCG along with an oil change this past weekend. DIY from Beisan and tips from the Mafia made it a very straightforward job. Took about 8 hours in total with several breaks. The most tedious steps were slicing off the old seals without gouging the pistons and the tightening of all 15 valve cover bolts. After about 150 miles of break-in, the improvement in low-end torque/throttle response/milage are significant and I am super pumped! It just flatout pulls hard all the way to 6800rpm and the 4k power dip is barely noticeable. She is also idling more smoothly and the exhaust note sounds a little deeper as an added bonus.

Combine that with the new front CAB's, front rotors and 4 new ceramic pads and BMW perf intake all done this summer the car feels completely transformed yeaaaah buddy.

nice! all of that is on my list...eventually

I'm at 84k. Was burning through a quart of oil every 1k, maybe more, and it was pooling on the runners on the left side of the valve cover. First gear acceleration was especially jumpy at various points in the rev range. All of that has been corrected and it honestly feels faster than when I bought it with 44k. I put her up on ramps and drained the oil prior to doing the seals/vcg so I would definitely recommend that. Also made it easier on my back to have it elevated....

Bought the package from Ray (Smilez), it all fit perfectly, his transaction was smooth and effortless, he gave me updates along the way, and if you need brakes Ray is definitely the way to go, he saved me a good bit of money.

Going to try to find time to tackle the touring's brakes this weekend, a bit concerned that the rotors will be frozen on after 9 years. Didn't realize until looking at all the brake parts tonight how much of a difference there is between the 330 and 325 - wow!

Later, I'll drive and avoid flooding as best I can, though I know the ZHP can handle it since I've had it in TOO MUCH water on 2 separate occasions, both because I'm an idiot. "The defense department regrets to inform you your sons are dead because they were stupid" - Mother Goose.

Washed, polished, buffed, sealed, vacuumed, tired.

Love the shine, but hate being so close that I can find all of the little dents, dings, and creases. Although I am nitpicking considering once the luster wears off you can't see any of them, you can't even feel them, it's just the bend of the reflection that's visible. If I could only drive while in a protective bubble... Hmmm... :)

Light output is excellent but I still have to work out the wiring for the bi-xenon....shouldn't be too hard to do. I will have pics later....still on my iPhone...:biggrin I also transferred the ZKW lens onto the new projector bowl. All in all it was fun and not as bad as I thought it would be.

Today radiator. Coolant reservoir. I was surprised to see how easy it is. I pretty much take the everything with a tool kit I got for 10 dollars. I was surprised to see that I was running almost straight water. It's barely blue. The reason I'm not doing it all is because I am going to laughin this weeken and I know I am going to be spending a lot. And last month I took two week vacations. I went to Texas. Went to a soccer match between Barcelona from Spain and America from Mexico( my team) while in Texas at the new cowboys stadium. I got to say that it's an amazin stadium. On my was back we stopped at the grand canyon(amazing. Just so incredible amazing). Then Vegas for one day. So I spent a lot. Now I got to wait a little to do the rest of my cooling system.

HTC Thunderbolt+TT

Yes. You always read about how a weak battery on our cars can cause odd electrical issues and it sounds like this is one of them. In both cases it was only AFTER shut down. That could be just coincidence though. Kris had some other issues with his though too while for me it was just the oil level light. My old battery, after sitting for one day shows 12.66 volts, while the new one after a charge and sitting for 8 hours showed 13.13 volts. So it doesn't take much to cause issues.

I mostly liked the look as it grew on me. I bought them and was severely on the fence at the Reunion (that was a couple of days after I installed them), and eventually went from "hate" to "like", but never "love". I eventually ended up putting the ambers back because the LED bulbs have much more effect with the ambers. The lights were too dark during bring sunlight to harvest the benefits of LED (more immediate and brighter, yielding in higher safety). Plus, I miss the character and appeal that ambers have on an Imola car. I always loved red on amber, and is one reason why I would kill for a Natural Brown leather interior for my car...

It's getting harder to find enthusiasts with ambers nowadays!

gloss black kidneys and clear bumper reflectors added today, in addition to new clear side markers added 2 days ago. those damn corner reflectors were a total nightmare to install. the clear replacement pieces were WAY too big for the slot, resulting in me having to file the top edges down. problem is, i don't have a filing tool. so i ended up using the corner edge of the concrete curb in the street in front of the house. yes, i sat there in the street rubbing the reflectors against the curb. i probably looked retarded. but finally i got them in.

on the 2nd piece, as i finally got it to pop in, the very top corner cracked and fell off from the pressure. i was so pissed! probably a good hour of work just filing these stupid things and one of them cracks at the very last second. oh well. you can barely tell. i will probably always notice it though, that's just how i am. it's the reflector in the 1st pic, the top right corner that cracked. only slightly noticeable, right? (this is where you all tell me you can't even notice...lol). i guess i should just consider myself lucky i didn't crack the whole thing in half (as i read on some DIYs)...

here are a couple quick night shots taken right after i finished. even in the dark i think it looks MUCH cleaner. and yes that is a tiag e46 you spy in the background. it's a 325i that belongs to the neighbors, who also have an e46 330i. we make up a good section of the block :)

oh ye, forgot to mention, i did this the other day as well. best results were with the remington fabric shaver after light moisture had been applied from the towel. really cleaned up the fuzzy little lint pills that had accumulated all over the wheel. looks and feels much much much better :)

i had mixed results with the magic eraser though. it definitely soaked up some oil and dirt. but it also started to disintegrate shortly after application and leave little white pieces all over the wheel.

So we think the yellow oil light was due to a slightly weak battery?

HTC Thunderbolt+TT

Yes. You always read about how a weak battery on our cars can cause odd electrical issues and it sounds like this is one of them. In both cases it was only AFTER shut down. That could be just coincidence though. Kris had some other issues with his though too while for me it was just the oil level light. My old battery, after sitting for one day shows 12.66 volts, while the new one after a charge and sitting for 8 hours showed 13.13 volts. So it doesn't take much to cause issues.

So that didn't cure it either. To be honest, I kinda had my doubts that .5 volts would be enough to trigger a low voltage glitch like this.

I've noticed that when I get the light if I shut the car off and re-start or even just turn the ignition back on makes the light go out. I need to go for a longer first drive of the day and re-confirm my observation that it doesn't do it at shut down, only after short drives.

I can't imagine it would be another bad sensor since it does the exact same thing it did before changing out the original one.

Anyone else ever heard of some other cause for the low oil level light to come on? Oil level is right in the middle of the mark.

They do look great JJD. Just not sure if I want to bake my lights though. If I knew for certain that I'd never have to take them apart ever again I'd probably go for it.

Nice; let me know how this goes. I might do the same. What's the cost so far?

BP,

Update on this...

I payed $325 for the ULF module and pairing switch and about $84 for the rest which included the mounting bracket for the ULF module, additional wiring, bluetooth antenna, nuts and bolts.

All in all, well worth it for me. I now have full OEM bluetooth functionality as well as voice control which is why I did this. :biggrin

Initially the ULF module wouldn't sync with my iPhone 4. Steve and I were :scratchinghead wondering why my iPhone wouldn't sync whereas his wife's would. The difference was that her's was a Verizon iPhone and mine was an AT&T. Still I thought it wouldn't matter since it was connecting via bluetooth.

Nevertheless, I was still happy with the purchase primarily because I now had navigation control via voice which I find pretty cool. This morning while going to work, I wasn't thinking and tried to access my phone book in the nav screen window and to my amazement, everything came up. It appears that my iPhone for some reason, unknown to me, linked up and I was able to make and receive phone calls. So all is good and now both bimmers have hands-free bluetooth communication.

If you have an opportunity to retrofit yours and get everything for a good price I would recommend doing it if your goal is hands-free communication. Hope this answers your questions BP :thumbsup

My car is in the shop, will hopefully have it back in a few hours

ok, so to expand in my quick post yesterday: About 2 weeks ago the check engine light popped up and went off real quick, so I thought I need to go get it checked out. I also started to notice a noise coming from my wheels that I thought was probably a wheel bearing going bad. Made an appt for last Friday to take my car into the stealership since my cousin is a tech there and he would work on my car himself. This was Friday 2 weeks ago.

FF to Thursday last week, blackout in SD. Call the dealer on Friday morning, they're all good so I take my car in. They inspect and find a bad rear drivers side bearing, fault code was a bad thermostat. My cousin also saw my vacuum hose from the brake booster wasn't looking to good so I had them fix that too. I thought its probably gonna be an all day job but I forgot to consider that there are probably cars left over from the day before that haven't been finished.

Finally yesterday at 4pm I get my car back. Now some people have and some don't have the aftermarket warranties on their car, I am on that does cause I had enough experiences with my E32 where I knew it would probably be worth it. Hell, I paid for it and haven't used it yet so I might as well get something out of it. Unfortunately the warranty doesn't cover hoses so the vacuum hose was on me, but my CCA discount helped a little. Cost of fixing the vacuum hose was $226. The warranty did however cover the thermostat (and new coolant) and bearings, total cost to me on those was a $100 deductible. So for a little over $300 I got over $1000 worth of work done at the dealer.

One issue though... thanks to the fact that my car spent the weekend probably baking in the sun of east county my stupid auto dim mirror decided to come back to life. The fluid 'ran out' probably a year ago and it became just a mirror and I got used to it, never changed or repaired it. Well now that its come back the areas where the fluid has reemerged have a weird reflection that makes things look kinda like you're watching a 3D movie. I guess now I need to either replace it or get it fixed. Does anybody have experience with getting Sybesmas (http://www.sybesmas.com/home.html) to fix their mirror?

Picked up a new set of rear Hankooks. Looks like I'll get about 15,000 out of this first set, fronts are still good. Hoping the fronts wear out the same time as this rear set. Not quite the mileage I was hoping for out of them but better than some I've seen. They are so much quieter than the Potenzas it came with. Handling isn't quite as quick on the Hankooks due to less stiff sidewalls but I'd take the tradeoff for the quiet ride any day. They still work great and once you get used to them you don't notice the handling difference. $360 shipped from Discount Tire.

Ya, they definitely lose some grip but I wouldn't descibe it as "dropping off a cliff". There's this uphill dogleg shortly after a corner on my way home and I hit it accelerating through 2nd gear that I used to be able to take with DSC on and not even feel it kick in but now I have to turn DSC off to avoid felling the power cut.

Good question, it seems like the 2nd half of their life has gone alot faster then the 1st half. And there is a noticeable difference between the left and right sides. I would say I drive fairly aggressively but there aren't a whole hell of a lot of corners in North Dakota. :biggrin And Dane's right, I'll swap them out at the wear bars. Plus I'm probably being a little conservative on my estimate of the miles left on them. I'm thinking about swapping the two rears side to side even though they're directional so they are both worn evenly when I take them off. I'll try to get some pics of them next time I have it out.

What do you run for tires and what mileage are you getting BP?

I did that once, unintentionally, so that was unwarranted. :p

Barry,
Currently I run Continental DWS tires. The set I had before this was Pirelli PZero Nero all seasons. Those lasted just shy of 31k miles, including daily driving, three tracks days, and a couple of autocrosses. On the street I drive pretty mildly, though for corners I take them as often as traffic allows...

And for the record, they wouldn't have corded if a buddy of mine didn't drift the car at one of the test and tunes! :p
Not that it's his fault; the tires were completely bald on the insides due to a bad alignment.

Channing,

I do but there are several pieces that are "worn" so to speak. If I were the original owner these "worn" pieces would still be in like-new condition. Since I'm the 3rd owner of my ZHP, there are several projects I have in store (one of them replacing my interior Silver Cube trim) to do. :biggrin

I am lucky in that I have a great job that supports my BMW 'crack' addiction...:thumbsup

Not that I really need to do this but my desire is to have an interior trim that is mint. Looking at this new trim piece is pure bliss....can't believe just how awesome this trim piece looks. When I changed out my interior trim piece on my ///M from aluminum to real carbon fiber, I couldn't believe the transformation. I know when I completely swap out my interior trim with "fresh" Silver Cube trim and get the seats, as well as carpeting, steam cleaned, my interior will be mint. That's the goal. :thumbsup

Both Dane and BP have ridden in my ZHP and know the shape of my interior. They can vouge for the overall condition...:biggrin

Total = $664.90 + shipping
versus $831.13 + tax

They can combine shipping, and after all that it would be cheaper than if you went to the dealer each time to buy because then tax will kill you. No tax from Tischer.

Charlie,
I recommend you order the rest of your trim from Tischer (www.getbmwparts.com (http://www.getbmwparts.com/)). I just checked the highlighted trim you had a pic of and it's about $20 cheaper from Tischer than it is on that sheet!

Here are the prices from Tischer (going down the list):

51457895407 - $56.40
51457895411 - $62.00
51457895408 - $83.16 <-- this is the piece you already have
51417896094 - $90.24
51417896096 - $90.24
51417896093 - $90.24
51427896095 - $90.24
51167896088 - $102.38
Total = $664.90 + shipping
versus $831.13 + tax

They can combine shipping, and after all that it would be cheaper than if you went to the dealer each time to buy because then tax will kill you. No tax from Tischer.

Or have me order it at these prices with free shipping. Just saying...

Lol honestly, I don't know most of it. I was turning way to hard and I lost traction and hit a curb :/ I ended up needing a new front control arm, cross member, rear control arm, and lots of tiny bits. Luckily no frame damage.

My OEM M3 bi-xenon projector bowl assembly came in this afternoon. Also have the bi-xenon solenoid controller circuit and pigtail harness to interface the 3-wire bi-xenon shutter from the projector bowl to the ZKW 2-wire shutter circuitry. Now all I have to do is wait till the weekend to organize and take the time to make up a very detailed "how to" DIY with lots of pics! Getting excited on this project :thumbsup

I did this a few months back. Except the way I did it is seemingly a lot easier. I just used OEM M3 lights, tore them apart and put my sedan bezels and lenses back in. (I also swapped the AL lenses for my ZKW's..as well as sharpened my cutoff.
