Can't you just paint the Matte with Gloss Black?

Theoretically you could, lots of thin layers, a lot of fine sanding/polishing and some layers of clear coat but for that much effort you should just pay the extra money and get the real BMW ones

az3579
10-13-2011, 12:21 PM
Painting grilles bad idea. Even if it doesn't flake off, it will get chipped off from all the road debris and rocks that fly up at the car and it will look like crap anyway. Ask me how I know.

What did you do to fix the rattle? nothing I've done so far has worked...

You have to take the long black louvered piece out and put double sided tape where it makes contact with the metal. Sweet silence. :)

Hell of a job. I applaud you. What's your mileage?

about 108k, the crack was fresh, and I've driven the car at 5 autocrosses and 1 zuto-x school this season on worn bushings all throughout the rear suspension... feels like a different car now, I did a couple laps around the cloverleaf one exit down from mine yesterday and was able to maintain about 65 mph through the turns with no understeer or sliding anywhere. I have full oem camber in the rear, about -1 and I had them do -1.5 camber up front instead of the oem -.72... feels amazing, i'm hoping to take 4th in my division at auto-x in my first year... second to last auto-x is sunday!

I installed stainless lines all around while I was doing everything, and the alignment is good for now, but thanks! btw- im the guy that gave you the oem 16" wheel when you got your wagon! I'm still watching for a wagon to build on the side as a project...

Nice! Too bad the armrests are so expensive. Otherwise it wouldn't be all that expensive to switch. I'd like to see what it would look like with the silver in mine. I've even debated just changing the dash and console pieces and leaving the black cube armrests.

The problem I have is that the silver cube that's already in my ZHP is okay but it has a few nicks and scratches on the driver's door trim, shift gear surround trim and the trim piece that is over the glove compartment. I figured that since I'm changing these pieces, I wanted to change everything out and have everything fresh. Looking at the new pieces that I already have, they look awesome! I now have 4 more pieces to go but they cost around $80 ea so it will be a few months before I get everything done. Then I can change everything out during the winter. I have already had a few people ask for my old trim pieces but they have already been spoken for before I finally made the decision to do this. :biggrin

finally got the alignment done... car seems to drift left sometimes still but not as often anymore. I'm wondering if there's just stuff in the road causing the drift and i'm just being paranoid. Also i know they use a weighted system and only 150 pounds are put in the front driver seat... i'm almost 280 so maybe they don't account enough for my weight? i'm a big boy lol

My on going project officially finally ended today. After initially replacing differential, transmission & brake bleeding fluids, I had a gap on my project. But in between, I replaced all spark plugs. As parts began to trickle in, my coolant replacement commenced. While getting inside, I was at the same time cleaning the engine bay above and below by detail brushings (degreaser & tooth brush) to remove crud, mud, leaves and dirt. Windshield cowl, cabin filter, windshield were replaced at the same time. ICV was cleaned and purged, belts, idler pulley, hoses, thermostat, temp sensor, expansion tank, water pump & pulley. Just about the whole enchilada. BMW coolant and test run. No leaks. Temperature stayed a tad below the mid range. Will keep an eye on the coolant level & leaks. Splash shield has already been scrubbed clean and installed. Now, I can concentrate on other projects on the plate. All things considered, this engine and associated areas are very accessible.

-oil change

-changed back to the stock 135's so the other wheels can get snow tires put on in the near future.
-changed my fog bulbs to the Nokya hyper yellow bulbs I got off eBay. I got some comparison pics that I'll put up a little later. They are definitely brighter and a much deeper yellow which I am very happy with.

There may be a ongoing thread idea there for the detailing forum.

maybe per post:

- photo results

Would build a pretty good knowledge base on paint care.

dane what's your recipe for success? sealant/glaze/wax brands?

I always keep debris off my car. I PC once/year. I clay before I wax any part of my car. I was on my hands and knees doing the rocker panels and lower portions of bumper. I use Adams clay bar, with Meguilers detail spray as a lubricant. I use a combination on Mothers cleaner wax, and Mothers Gold Class. I don't "tape" my car when waxing....I am just very careful around trim. I still have dodo juice hard candy, but can't justify spending that much on wax+shipping, when I can find comparable products local.

We do have a rather informative thread on this....

HAHA John good luck with those tires. I had them on my car "NO BUENO" KDW made entirely too much noise for me. The grip is really good only problem for me is that seem to grab the grooves on the freeways out here.

I switched to Hankooks

He's right, just takes time and practice. I used to be awful at correcting paint when I first started and I just got better at it and used better products as time went on. I tell you what though, once you get the hang of it you can look at someone's car and immediately tell what's wrong with it. I saw someone's car at work today (a honda pilot) and I could see hazing... I just cringed and avoided looking at the car the rest of the way inside.

drove home today from a weekend trip that included 2 nights in san antonio and 2 nights in austin. almost exactly 500 miles total. nice little road trip for the ZHP, first one under my belt. smooth as butta. averaged almost exactly 25 mpg on the trip. the new hankooks are extremely quiet and equally competent. i was taking 35mph suggested corners at 60 no sweat.

i have tomorrow off as well so my plans include a good wash as well as installing the //M aluminum pedals. should be a nice day :)

The oil filter housing started this, since i need to go fix that leak before it worsens, i'm also replacing....idler/tensioner pulleys (original), belts obviously while i'm there, and the VCG. All new rubber everwhere there's a part that's coming off.

Little up date on my car, Coolant light comes on every now and then. Have to add Distilled Water, but I have coolant spray on my long tube intake and on my expansion tank and on the face of my drive pulleys. I'm certain it's a pinhole leak in my radiator. I still need to find the time to have a coolant pressure test. Fan is going to be removed and radiator checked thoroughly. I really don't want to pony up for a new one...but it's still easier to replace than those damned heater hoses...

Slightly OT, but is this the one that's considered a wallet key? Got this with my car, plus 2 keys. I know there is a valet one (that doesn't open the glove box), and a wallet one. (Guess I could try it myself and see), but I also wanted the "official" answer for someone that has a full set (which I believe is 4 keys).

LOL. Good point. The trick is to throw them something extra to either park it out front or park it away from other cars. I did that when I stayed at a hotel that I knew had lots of open parking in a close garage, and where parking it myself would have been quite a pain due to distance (and out with the general public).

Wheels won't alter the drop. You'll just have more rim and less sidewall.

Looks great.

S85FTW
10-20-2011, 08:27 AM
Actually it doesnt look as good because there is so much more tire compared to the 19" csl reps. Here it just gives the appearance of a gap even though I can not stick a finger between the tire and the wheel well (I am assuming because of such a big sidewall the tires are more rounded and tapered in). Whereas, when I had the 19" wheel on the car the actual rim was tucking into the fender (I am sure because of offset and much less sidewall), it looked a lot more aggressive.

So in summary, that is kind of what I meant by the full effect of the drop until spring. At that point, I am sure I will lower it more.

P.S. New wheels may be coming in the spring as well

Nice, I do the same exact thing!!! I schedule my visits to see fam in Michigan whenever I visit customers in PA. I "strategically" schedule the customer visits for a friday so I can hit them on the way to MI.

Today I am taking the fiance to the airport and it is being expensed because I just happen to be visiting a customer in Nassau after I drop her off.

Umm...ok. Hopefully they.....

1. Torque drain plug to proper spec and don't strip that out.

2. Properly place new o-ring on cap.

3. Properly tighten oil filter cap.

I watched them due the filter. No reason to think they didn't put the same care in below. Besides, the only other place that has changed the oil is the dealer and you know the lowest guy on the totem poll does that job!

Yeah you might as well do it sooner than later. Easiest way to do it is by removing the intake. That way, you have more room to play around in

This was supposed to be a long term project. Leather over Alcantara. But the opportunity opened up yesterday. Took me almost two days. A few hours yesterday and requires daylight for this. And started early today for a few hours until done. Wheelskins special order to my measurements of the wheel. And perforated on the sides and leather on top and bottom. I used my own wax strings. Left over from my Navy days. We used this wax strings when we do electric motor rewinding. Doubled up cross-lacing (lacing up your shoes...right over left). I never use their lacing strings they provided. Looks too short for me. Which I cannot do a double string lace. With the twin lace, I am able to pull tight without fearing of snapping the strings. The strings were originally Beige. But I used Forever Back to dye. Re-dyed twice for full black effect. The leather is soft. As the leather ages, then it will become tighter. So, I am not worried about the rough bumps. Call me cheap. But I did this is a job with my own two hands. If I was to order this again, I will modify my measurements just a wee bit that I provided to Wheelskins.

No swirls. My correction process didn't yield that many results.. but I'm just happy it's done and I didn't damage my paint. I finished it off with Chemical Guys XXX hardcore paste wax and I couldn't be any happier. Goes on very easy in light coats, and comes off just as easy. I've heard it lasts around 4 months with 2 good coats. So I'll put another coat on right before winter to help me get through until springtime. I highly recommend it (plus it smells delicious :))

I gave it an awesome wash, interior and exterior detail. I replaced some of the rattling broken clips on the inside of my door, and I got a new clip for my exterior door moulding. Note: the BMW dealership has the wrong part number listed for the exterior door moulding clips. I brought the whole thing in and showed it to them, they were puzzled as to how it even was put together since the clips they brought out did not fit. Then they realized that the wrong part number is listed on their system, and they found me the right one.

Oh, then when I was done, I was backing it out of the garage, I did this:

I. Am. NOT. Happy. With myself. First time I ever have done something so stupid. And of course, I don't accidentally do it when I'm 16 and learning to drive on my mom's old minivan. No, I do it to my BMW at age 21. Currently looking for a sport-package coupe mirror base, no colored cover, no glass.
