Maybe this should go in the pic section, but this is William (wsmeyer) and Jon (jupiter) checking out my Ness, right outside the dock area for Jon's ship. Very cool to meet Jon and this was William's first mafia meeting outside of me. We had a great time hanging and talking ZHPs. :thumbsup

Hah, I was too damn tired when I got back on the ship to post, but yes, was awesome to meet up with you guys! It's always good to escape the ship when possible, and to be able to talk cars, even better! I will say, John's car does look amazing and so tastefully modded. Now I know why people pay massive bucks for the BMW performance strut bar and intake... Wow that bar is like artwork.

Even cooler, John let me drive his car back to the ship... Sprintbooster/sport button mod, OMG awesome. It was a weird feeling driving an auto/'vert, but such a cool car indeed.

Good times last night for sure. Thanks again guys!

LOL. I almost had a heart attack when they leaned on it for the pic, and told them that not only I would kill them, but the mafia would ban them. So after that, I nervously let them touch the "vinyl/plastic" tonneau cover and the leather panel, not the paint. :biggrin

Thanks for the props Jon. I have to say he was kind in the post as both he and William aren't big fans of my c/f roundels and my TSE3 exhaust. (I don't mind though, all in good fun). I admit that exhaust is not raspy, but it has a touch of rasp which I wouldn't mind removing.

So great to see Mafia members meeting up. Very jealous you guys got to see JR's Ness and Jon got to drive her. A little disappointed that you guys leaned on her. Don't you remember what John's been through these past couple months with the paint!!!

And Jon, you gotta be thankful that you're involved with a community that will let you drive a ZHP even though you're 2,000 miles from home and your own ZHP. :)

Not sure if I told y'all my sweet living situation for the next year. I got a new job (again, second in 2 years) which required me to move. I was about to sign a lease when I stumbled on a family looking to find someone trustworthy (!) to live in their new-construction mcmansion for the year at minimal cost. I jumped on the opportunity. Only snag was I needed to find a place to store my crap, and their 1 car garage was perfect. They also kept a lot of their crap in there, too. I decided living in the lap of luxury, in a way i'll never live again, without the benefit of a roof over my ZHP's roof wouldn't do. It took me all day today to reorganize and clean out the garage. Wish I took a before pic, but I did not.

Today I gave my ZHP a garage.

Yes it is a nice car, and very generous of John to let me drive it. I will definitely return the favor when you guys come East, Devlin can attest I am not crazy obsessed with my car being touched like some... ahem*Dane*ahem. :biggrin It was very interesting to drive a ZHP pretty much opposite to mine too... Black vs white, vert vs sedan, auto vs 6spd... It felt more like a late night cruiser than a sports car, but still a sweet ride and the exhaust sounded so good. A little rasp, but I really didn't mind it. I personally like the loud, just these days I know the wife would not allow.

Oh and John, since I'm getting so much trouble for leaning on your car, I gotta call you out!! Your windshield was streaked a little. :shifty :rofl

My passenger wiper was squeaking from the base. Turned out my wiper motor I had replaced just wasn't tightened enough, making the grommet/seal/whatever that big rubber thing is squeak as it turned. Tightened it down and it's not moving anymore. Before I could move it with my finger.

While I had my cowl off, I took a look at my sticking up cowl on the corner that was driving me nuts. In the process of gently trying to pull it off, I broke off two of the clip holders, leaving the clips in! :O

Superglue and a clamp solved that problem, they're not going anywhere now. Problem fixed :) I got the clips out and looked at them. I hate them for the following reasons:

1. They're horrible at being reused. Once you pop it out, it never clips in as well again.

2. They tend to break easily. One they're clipped in, they GRAB.

3. They're too small, sometimes causing raised sections of your cowl, especially if you've replaced your windshield

I had a spare set of interior clips sitting in my trunk and figured I'd see if they fit. Lo and behold, they fit exactly the same, seat even better, and pop out more nicely.

I swapped the clips on the troublesome sections and it is a massive improvement. The driver's side is still not totally totally flush, but it's damn close. That's just because of the windshield being swapped, I figure. It'll never fit like the factory :(

I need to learn to get used to these OCD things. This car will not, and cannot, be perfect.

Discovered that my coolant was leaking from the upper radiator hose. The expansion tank had come unclipped somehow and when I went to refill it today, the vent forced some water onto the top of the ET. Further investigation would reveal a simple clipping of the hose was necessary. Let's hope this was the final fix :praying

my buddy came over yesterday with his 08 335i, said his car was making noises and driving funny. I drove it, it felt like it was driving on bricks and the suspension was hard, low speed cornering was difficult as well. Couldn't figure it out then I checked his tire pressure - 48. The dumbass said his TPMS alarm went off a few days ago so he went to the gas station and just pumped each tire up for 15 sec.

:facepalm

I sent him to the nearest gas station to buy a tire pressure gauge.

Missing a turbo'd car though... when I was checking it out, I took it round the block and punched it (it's tuned by us obviously) and was just like - WHOA I REMEMBER THIS. I love the E90 body style too... if I could get a wagon with an N54 under bonnet I think I might be happy driving it the rest of my life. Not sure I could do the new F31 with the N20 turbo'd 4 banger though.

more early build date issues... so we put the car up, pulled off the wheels, drained the brake lines and started the job of redoing the brake system

and now for the issues... so about 4 months after they built the car they changed the design of the brake master and hoses so the parts I bought for a '69 are again not correct. Parked in the parking structure on campus. Later at work yesterday I noticed that my front bumper had been backed up into or something - there's an area where the paint/clear coat is cracked, hairline ridges.
Going to see what options I have to mend it as best as I can because I can only guess that prolonged driving on the freeways will make that crack spread.

Still in disbelief at how an idiot can hit a parked car...

Well after my left rear window regulator went out in July my RIGHT REAR one just went out so I had Valley BMW in roanoke hold the only one they had on hand for me and I'm going to get it Monday. In the mean time I have to put something over my window to cover the 1.5" slit at the top.

Any suggestions?

New BMW blue coolant, new cabin filter, and new air filter. Oil change coming up next - just didn't have time today.

PO didn't use BMW blue: 5893

Looks like residual oil from a previous leak because there isn't oil on the drip pan/cover you need to take off to see this area.

So the braking system is done... kinda. New booster, master cylinder, SS brake lines, ATE Super Blue, old school asbestos pads, rotors, rebuilt front hub. I didn't feel like dealing with drums/shoes/parking brake lines right now so I'll deal with those some other day.

Asbestos pads? Hello cancer. Even cleaning the brake dust off is considered extremely harmful to you health.... Unless I'm completely missing something lol

Hermes
09-21-2012, 05:25 PM
I agree, I will have to be careful around them but those pads have some serious grip. Too bad they're gonna be hard to find soon.

Well... one other issue. Due to the build date of the car it has a weird early caliper in a size that almost no 2002 has so finding the correct pads is very hard. I'll probably just go BBK at some point so I won't have to deal with the old school technology, but that kit is gonna cost appx $2400 so I'm gonna wait on that

Well, I'm on the ship, and we're about 2 days outside of Alaska. Going to anchor for a day while we wait for inventory, which will give us some fishing time.

But, I did speak to my wife, and she told me that she started my car today and let her idle in the garage for about 20 minutes just to give the fluids some time to circulate and make sure the battery was holding charge.

I miss my car. :(

Jon, I agree with Dane....driving the car until it warms up is much better for it over allowing it to idle for a bit. It is better to put the car under load so that the transmission/diff also get movement and allow oil to circulate there as well... also it is much better to allow the car to run for a bit occasionally, which is what I do for my ///M when not driving it a long time.

Enjoy the fishing up there in Alaska! I hear it's great fishing over there! Take some pics if you can :)

Put new "sneakers" on my ZHP, all season Pilot Sports, that feels so good. Got all my non-car chores done too late to take pics, will do so tomorrow.

So does anyone coming here in 2 weeks need summer tires? The Continental Extreme Contact DW front tires have 8/32nds tread remaining, the rears are mismatched tread depth due to a replacement, one has 6+/32nds, the other 4/32nds, all have perfectly even wear with no feathering. I wanted all-seasons and I wanted to try Michelins is the reason I replaced them, damn this OCD. $100 for the front set, $50 for the rear set.

I'm going to place an order with the tire shop tomorrow for some Michelin a/s pilot sports as well. I like the sound of their Z-speed rating, and 45k mile tread wear warranty.

What do you guys think? Or should I get the Primacy mxm4? The downside is, they are H-rated and not as "sporty" dry traction. The upside is the 55k mile tread warranty! And the price difference is only $1. They are also 2 lbs lighter than the pilot sports. I think that matters with a heavy zhp wheel :)

how do they feel compared to the 135s?

Not much more than a quick test drive under the belt, though I sensed a bit of increased understeer. Perhaps it just felt more 'nimble'. Either the reduced weight, different tires, or the increased rear wheel width is contributing, or the combination thereof (duh?).

Really don't mind the increased stagger , as I don't plan on tracking it. I am sure this driver will adjust.

Today after work my radio stopped working when I tried to power it on. No matter how many times I tried to push the power button the radio stayed off so I drove home w/o tunes... checked fuses and they were all good. I then texted Steve (SNA77) and he told me to disconnect the battery and leave it disconnected for at least 16 minutes to reset all modules. I did this and reconnected the battery....turned my car on and then turned on the radio.....it worked flawlessly....

Learned something today, didn't cross my mind to disconnect my battery to reset my modules. A big thanks to Steve for his recommendation! :thumbsup

Learned something today, didn't cross my mind to disconnect my battery to reset my modules. A big thanks to Steve for his recommendation! :thumbsup

No. Unplugging a car will not do that.

But if BMW updates your car to latest software, it will overwrite the Shark, and you will have to Shark it again.

Kris.....a random orbital buffer will reduce blisters...;)

Today after work my radio stopped working when I tried to power it on. No matter how many times I tried to push the power button the radio stayed off so I drove home w/o tunes... checked fuses and they were all good. I then texted Steve (SNA77) and he told me to disconnect the battery and leave it disconnected for at least 16 minutes to reset all modules. Happy to help... Obviously I've been down that road before. :) Car computers are just like any other computer... Computer software has bugs, and it's amazing how pulling the plug on anything electrical can solve many problems..

Speaking of BMW53 radios... Our 2004 cars will have an older part #. I replaced mine with the 65126988276 part number a few years ago. It was $200 with the core of my old BM53 radio, which is a great deal. It was a remanufactured unit that had the final software revision on it (radios are not software upgradeable). Basically all the kinks had been worked out, updated etc (There were SIX newer revisions than my 2004 radio). Requires no coding, and is a direct plug and play replacement.

It handles lows a lot better but I noticed already it separates the highs differently thank stock HK and now less is going through the tweeters and more into the mid drivers so the sound is located lower in the car.

Dane,

I think from people who didn't have a good fit is because the strut tower tops weren't flat and they had fitment issues as a result. For strut towers that are flat like ours, there should be no fitment issues whatsoever. When Ben texted me he was very happy with the strut bar and texted me the picture he had posted here. Looks like fitment was perfect and I'm happy he loves his new strut bar :thumbsup

///Maniak
09-27-2012, 04:44 AM
Sorry about the delay, guys. The fitment is perfect. Since the ends are separate from the bar in the middle, it actually allows for a decent amount of adjustment before you tighten it down.

Funny thing Steve, is that I checked with the parts guys here at BMW of Newport and they couldn't find the remanufactured radio under that part number (65126988276). What they found for a replacement BM53 radio for navigation equipped cars had a very high price tag.....like $2,400!
:jawdrop

Naaahhh, if my radio were to fail, I would then be looking for other alternatives such as RealOEM, or Dynavin....there's no way I will shell that much money for an OEM radio....that's crazy :rofl

Flushed the brake fluid in my E30 last weekend. The stuff in the system was disgusting. After a little bit of ATE Super Blue, it's like a whole new brake system. Although, I have question. I was humming along great, and on the front driverside bleeder valve, it was stripped. I had to use some channel locks to open and close the valve.

How easy is it to change the valve itself?

Seth, compared to the OE HK speaker setup, how do you like the BSWs?

I honestly think the Dynavin did most of the improving on the stereo before when I swapped that this winter. Yesterday when installing, I left one side BSW and one side HK and the difference was marginal. I liked that the HK had a lot of highs coming out of the tweeters - at ear level. The BSW seems to have more highs working though the middrivers and saves the tweeters for the extreme highs. The HK midbass flops in comparison to the BSW though, not sure if its just the way the speaker handles the lower sounds, if its equalized out at a higher Hz or what but much less distortion at a higher volume which means my basslink can get the bass bump in the stereo EQ to make it pound without me worrying about blowing the door speakers. Swapped out both front doors so far, will do rears tomorrow. Thinking of experimenting with HK tweeters and BSW everything else just to see what it sounds like, I gotta go back into the drives side to move the wiring over and replace a few clips I broke. #poundedthedoorpanelbackintoplacelikeabause

should be broken in, the PO said he used them for about 5-6 months before he sold his car. :dunno

Don't get me wrong, they sound good, just think the Dynavin made the big jump and these are just closing the very small gap from very good to great. Now it's all about small tweaks to my liking.

Noob question. What purpose do these serve ?

massive bling

oh... and they hold the front struts together for stability in the suspension.

I agree with Seth....massive "baller" bling...;)

Seeing that they come from BMW Performance, they also serve a functional purpose of adding more stability to the front struts/suspension...

you can fulfill this function with much cheaper strut bars but I had to have this for my BMW...:)

Looks great Charlie. And, I agree with the others. It's really about engine bling, but it does help prevent tower mushrooming and it purportedly reduces chassis flex. Can't imagine the e46 chassis flexes all that much but I'm guessing my vert would, so I got it to. Here's a blurb from Turner Motorsports.

"BMWs need some added chassis strengthening in the front. You may notice some "chassis flex" when cornering or driving over a bumpy road. The reason for this is the incredible amount of force being applied to front strut towers. They have a tendency to flex when force is applied to them. Tying the strut towers together with a brace reduces the amount of flex and soldifies your car's chassis."

no pics :shifty i'll get some pics. once i paint my CF CSL trunk Tiag, repaint my front bumper.

they are 18x8.5 ET35 rear 18x9.5 ET45 (i should have gotten better offset in the rear but wasn't too sure with the x9.5) oh well ill install some spacers later

They are BBS Lm's replicas. Wifey doesn't like the red BBS caps haha. maybe if i get some blue or black ones.

I know a couple guys on here have the black ones, even though their Imolas are wearing the red ones (which look better anyways!). Might see if they'll sell them to ya.
