View Full Version : What did you do for your ZHP/BMW today?

I know it's been done before elsewhere, but I don't think there's a thread on here yet, and I thought it'd be a great addition to the forum... I'll start:
In preparation for taking off my winters and bolting on my 135's, I (very carefully) used my dremel on low-speed with the little wire bristle brush and cleaned up all the tar and old wheel weight adhesive on the interior of the wheels. Came out very nice... when I got close to the wheel, I stopped and used a little plastic chisel and some westley's bleach white and a cleaning pad. Also did a once-over on the car with some Meguiar's wax detailer... Getting closer to summer! :fistpump

My OEM CAB's are tired, I get the steering wheel "twich" when I stab the brake pedal... but, oddly enough, when it's really cold out, it doesn't do it... I was planning on replacing with some HD units from Bav. Auto, or considering the Meyle's or Poly units...

Honestly, I couldn't tell you if they made a difference or not. I swapped out the 16" winter setup for the 135s at the same time so the feel of the car changed dramatically. I was on the 16s for so long that I completely forgot what it was like to have tight steering!
Right now the car feels amazing, so I would attribute some of that to the Meyels.
I'll have a new thread up of the cars progress since last year in a few days when I get back from VA. She sure is lookin' purty!

Cleaned it, inside and out. For the wheels, I used Eagle One Wet Spray-On Wax. It did an amazing job of shining them up! It's much better than ArmorAll spray-on, which runs out really fast.

Interestingly, my car did not have NGK's in it from the factory, they were BMW Bosch plugs. I was not expecting to see that!

Well, I finally joined the club... the CDV Delete club. Longest part of the process was figuring out how best to get the car jacked up :)
Woke up after not driving it for two days to find a SES :(
Ran over to Advance AutoParts to get it scanned. Code P1412 - Large leak in secondary air pump. Had it reset, didn't come back. But, I wasn't too happy with that code.
I opened up my hood and found one of the hoses had come loose to the secondary air pump. Snapped the hose back in and all is good!
Also I washed it.

Totally.
FWIW, there's no rhyme or reason as to which cars have CDV's installed. Some do, some don't. I've had two 330's without it and an E39 530 Sport that had it (which I removed). So phenomenally annoying that thing.
Note: the CDV is also called a "lock valve" and the mod'd version you need when deleting can be had from bavauto. There's some explanatory info at zeckhausenracing.com -- click technical tab.

Yep! You almost had an Imola from Princeton, but the seller was too firm on the price. haha You and your dad did it the right way - looked, learned, and waited for the car at the right price.
I'm srsly jealous of all you guys that washed your ZHP's today! 1. because you have a zhp. 2. because it's been raining here for 7 straight days and its in the forecast for 4-5 more days, grr!
What I did for my wannabe///M3 today: I drove the scenic route to my Aunt's house, about 30 miles straight north of where we live. The road travels along the river, so there are a few fun little curves and turns. We took a spirited drive, and realized I might have to do this vanos project a little sooner than later. My husband won't shut up about my car being a turd. I need to go find something to do, lol!

I think we did it the right way too. I tried not to get too excited when looking because I knew the right one would eventually come around. That was one clean Imola ZHP though........I'm glad we passed on it. We even went up to Boston once to see a Silver Grey/Alcantara sedan but that thing was beat to hell. Washed and waxed and painted some clear reflectors Imola red yesterday. Probably install them today, it looks like they are a pretty close match considering it was just a spray can mixed at an auto parts store. It's the same stuff I used on my fog light shrouds and license plate frame.

Looks pretty good if you ask me. Would look even better without that frickin front plate. Maybe could have been one shade lighter of a mix but not bad. That can is almost gone so the next time I'll have to see if they can tweak the blend just a bit. Next project is the lower mesh grille.....take it out and repaint it and the areas behind it black.

Re-painted the M-tech bumper's front grill. It was bothering me as the black was chipping off, showing the silver color underneath it. Did the same method as one of the members on here, but instead of a blanket, I used a couple of table cloths =P

The lower grill on mine is faded, big time... contemplating whether to take it out and spray it or just leave it in, tape it off, spray it. I feel that if I leave it in and spray it, the residual will get everything behind it darker, too... whereas, if I take it out, spray it, and put it back in, it will stand out too much and everything behind it will look just as faded as the grill used to be... hmm...

I still have issues and can't get my dang service indicator to reset, I have tried to do the key trick and hold down the selector but it just doesn't want to reset. Oh well, time to take the car into the shop for the first time in almost 3 years

Bought two new tires for the ZHP today. Only bought rear tires because the fronts still look great. Got a good deal on Falken FK452 tires (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004FV4X0S/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=zhpcom-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399349&creativeASIN=B004FV4X0S) for $192 apiece with free shipping (Prime). Plus, I used our affiliate link, so the commission comes back to the site.
I love getting my stuff fast. Yesterday I ordered it. Tomorrow it will be here. It was originally scheduled for May 2 delivery. Gotta love Amazon.

I parked in covered parking at the airport. Maybe she wont be covered in sticky salt, dirt and soot like usual when parking at the airport lot.
Just had a quickie estimate done over at the bodyshop, $150 to refinish the rear cover. Dropping the car off Monday for an overnight stay :)

I cleaned the engine bay this morning. It wasn't that dirty but I removed all of the dust and grease. Used a wet rag to remove. Followed it with a dry rag to remove the water. Looks great.
Also gave me a chance to look for any potential problem areas. I didn't see any cracked hoses or loose plugs. Things look good.

Looks great David! I've been debating getting an armrest cover. When you remove the leather cover is it a "no going back" type deal? If I decided I preferred the leather could it be re-fitted?

From what i can tell, i should be able to put the leather back on. It removed easily, and all in one piece. Might want to pm vendor though, as he may have some experience with it. And thanks!

Installed my new battery. So far so good.
FWIW, Wal Mart sells the correct battery for our cars. Last time I checked it was $77 and has a decent warranty. At the time, I couldn't find anything even close to that, price-wise.
If you're not having them do the swap (I DIY'd mine) be sure you bring your old battery or else there will be a core charge designed to motivate you to properly dispose of the old one.

Sapphire, yes. Unique colors being less than ideal when shopping for used doors. But it's worth it. I'm usually no way Jose on black cars, especially here in the brutal Texas sun. But this particular color combo is greatness.
You guys would love the extra mile I go to find shade when parking. GF gets so pissed. But even she admits the results are worth it: the interior is immaculate.
May you never need to do so but for reference, door removal is surprisingly easy: 3 small bolts and an electrical connector.

Not any more.....I looked at them a couple of weeks ago and now they are $94, or was it $96. Either way, they went up quite a bit and the ones here aren't white anymore, black now. No big deal though since you never see it.

I really thought a ton of material had worn away; it turns out it was just matted down and caked with the grime of years' worth of hand contact. The cleaner was very effective at releasing the grime, and the microfiber towel did a great job of unmatting the fibers. I might make another pass soon, but it already looks and feels much better than it did when I first got the car. That Leather Masters product gets two thumbs up from me :applause

Ordered some Orion angel eyes though!

Replaced my serpentine belt tensioner pulley as part of my epicly long project in replacing pulleys, because I learn new things about my pulleys every time I work on them.
I found out my serpentine belt pulley is hydraulic, while my A/C tensioner is mechanical :scratchinghead
I spent a buncha time trying to figure out where in the world I get the pulley for my A/C tensioner, and eventually found that it is Dayco Part # 89133. It's made by INA and sold by Dayco, so it's definitely of OEM-quality.
It's also sold at Advance AutoParts for $39.99! But I found it on RockAuto for $21 shipped. I'd rather wait and save $20 :) So I'll be doing that as soon as it arrives. Then I'll finally be all done with my pulley/belt replacement and can feel confident that my belts won't be snapping any time soon.
Also, I've got an extra hydraulic pulley as a result of my error. It's brand-new from the OEM, INA. I'll sell it to anyone for $15 + shipping :D PM me. It's $21 + shipping on ECS tuning.
Then after doing that, I cleaned the interior with Armor All Natural Finish wipes and vacuumed. I must say, this is the BEST ArmorAll product I've ever used. It really brings out the color in the dash materials without leaving any greasy residue that always seems to pick up dust. It literally looks brand-new once you are done applying it and wiping with with a microfiber cloth. It's hard to describe - it's like if ArmorAll did exactly what you wanted it to do minus all the crap that you don't want it to do (i.e. attract dust and look way too shiny).

Careful, I hear the auto dimming mirrors leak a fluid that will ruin your interior if it gets on it...

Methinks black, though not Carbon because that actually changes color depending on the light. If anything, it should be a gloss black to match your trim.

You are right....right ahead of you on this:) If the mirror begins to bubble and you see discoloring that's when you remove it and get it repaired. I have spare mirrors and am in the process or sourcing another replacement Oval mirror as a spare in case this happens to either my ///M or ZHP.

Damn. Didn't even know that was a possibility.
I always remove the fill plug first just in case it ever stripped or I couldn't get it out. Was told it's a good idea so you don't end up with an empty diff and no way to fill it.
