Great shot! :thumbsup

Thanks.

CW, I commend you not only on your excellent work photographically but as a man having the strength and loyalty to your wife to NOT go try and become the cream filling in that sandwich.

My wife was with me at the shoot, thus making it even easier for me to remain creamy filling free.

Great shot, Casey.

Thanks Mark.

Discovered by the Germans in 1904, they named it San Diego, which of course in German means a whale's vagina.

I cannot comment on that one, Kyle. The Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002JCSV8U/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=zhpcom-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399373&creativeASIN=B002JCSV8U) is a great lens, though. Highly recommend. I got it through Amazon.com.

Yes. Same day. I decided to process this one a little differently than I normally do. Was going for a strong Earthy, neutral look. Also wanted to make sure I kept enough green in the shot so that it didn't come off as ashy and dead.

I shot this one at about waist level.

Specs

Exposure: 0.002 sec (1/500)
Aperture: f/2.8
Focal Length: 155 mm
ISO Speed: 200

It's harder light on the edges, and I just thought it about but I was shooting with that AB at full power, I probably pulled the front sheet to get more light and harder edges.

@Dane, Casey, Static, John -

Glad you liked the pic. One of the more humorous things about being a parent is that whenever you try to show them new things they notice and fixate on something else. We took her to the LA Live complex which is a bunch of restaurants and an ice rink decorated for Christmas and she fixated on a recessed light that changed color, and the Moon.

Just laying on a table.

I didn't want to focus purely on the light itself, that's boring IMO. The light beam though I find interesting...I saw there was dust, and figured that was a cool area to focus on...using 1/3rd rules...etc.

Yes/no?

My eye is definitely drawn to the dust speck (right third). Mission accomplished.

Wait until you get that nifty fifty. You won't need to crank up the ISO to 3200 to get this same shot. You'll be a happy camper.

UdubBadger

m0nkey it is an interesting piece. I think the only thing to improve could be a crop (or frame position next time). though basically anything i ever say on here is artistic expression, I'll add my thoughts to yours. simply, i would have placed the light in the 1st third of the frame (left about middle height and distance from edge) so that the beam - where it is brightest - would lead your eye all the way across the photo and both corners on the extreme right. Right now it works but I feel like my eye really only wants to look at 2/3rds of the photo.

there is also always the tripod route for a shot like that too. if its not moving or in a tight spot, my professors shit themselves when we shoot hand held for stuff like this.

@m0nkey - I think it's a really interesting photo as well and I hope you go back and explore it some more. I agree with Udub that a tripod is in order. It looks pretty good for ISO3200 and in most pics that amount of noise wouldn't be much of a problem but in this one it gives the appearance in the lower left of less contrast then there actually was or should be. Other things I would try would be stopping it down to give more depth of field. In my mind I imagine it would be cool if the focus started just past the blown out area right in front of the flashlight and extended a good 10 inches or so - and it followed the grain of the wood.

William.

^^ ISO 3200. Not surprised. That D3100 is going to start showing serious noise at ISO 1600 (and probably even at ISO 800).

If you could get that ISO down, by having a larger aperture (by using a 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8, for example), that would go a long way toward giving you more confidence in low-light shooting conditions.

As it stands, you were shooting very close to wide open on the lens you were using (at that focal length). You were also using a slow shutter speed, too (which also helped get more light to the sensor). You did all you could. Would have liked to see that bokeh without the noise. Would have looked great.

Keep up the good work, Kyle.

Blah, ISO performance FTL :(. I wish I did more research and looked up ISO performance of the 3100 vs 5100. I need to find a cheap tripod too.

I do really need those prime lens. Like I said, I asked for a 35mm f/1.8, and will probably get a 50 f/1.8 as well down the road. I'll have to go to downtown at home and take some shots, I really liked the bokeh that I was creating...just wish for more w/out noise.

Oh well...gotta work with what you got. Thanks Marcus

Great shots everyone!! lol ever since finals week a couple weeks back, I haven't been able to really look at the awesome work you guys are creating! Finally getting a little time here and there, but still busy as I'm on vacation in Florida, and enjoying every part of Disney! Feels good to lay back and be a little kid again! :D So let me know what you guys think....as I'll be posting up quite a few photos from my trip! As of right now, I've taken 800+ photos from Cinderella's castle to Illuminated Parades! I'll probably just post a new thread when I get the majority done, but here's a few I've taken!! Enjoy guys and keep up the great work!

Took this picture a while ago when sailing south from Norfolk to Charleston SC offshore Hatteras.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-AtMkuofWL24/TvaBaVM3D4I/AAAAAAAAAzg/I32SyYANkpU/s1024/Dolphin.jpg

Thought it did a nice job capturing the dolphin just playing with the boat. We were probably doing 8+ knots so moving right along. He or she was doing 20+ as desired.

At first I was shooting and I never was getting focus...(even though it was focusing on something). Initially I thought it was the filter I had on it (I bought a tiffen CPL) and it was causing it be be blurry, but then I backed up a bit and it was starting to get clear.

Marcus got it right, D3100
