Emily told me they got 8" of snow. This upcoming weekend is a bust for me due to weather so I will come down the weekend of the 7th/8th weather permitting to get the wheels :thumbsup Frustrating part of long distance driving in winter....

Mine's not faded; it always looked like that. This is in absolute direct sunlight, keep in mind; it was so bright out I had to squint...
It's kind of like how regular black paint doesn't look black in direct sunlight either.

is there a temperature difference when lowering your pressures?

I do believe the G.A.S radiator cap just lowers burst pressure to save the cooling components such as the Exp tank.

..... and I keep on going down this rabbit hole......

Dan (NoVAphotog) got to see my ZHP, although it was very dirty, yesterday. He could post his impressions about my car....;)

IIRC, I believe my first impression of Charlie's car went something like this:

:jawdrop "DAMN that is LOW. I mean...DAMN!"

That said.

Shortly before going our separate ways, I managed to find myself behind the wheel of Charlie's ZHP. I gathered a few minutes of seat time around a fairly quiet parking lot as the sun was setting, casting a golden hue across the Imola red car I called my own sitting in a spot ahead of us. When I first turned the key, I immediately noticed a sound which...I can only call a growl. This car was alive. As I began my short jaunt around the lot (traveling at minimal speed, due to other cars and the meat in the back), I recall immediately laughing with joy the SECOND I heard the gurgling babble of the exhaust as I let off the throttle. Repeatedly, revving and coasting to have that sound fill my ears. Unfortunately, I must save comments on the LSD and other notables until further drives can allow for the full potential, but I will say even in just driving around a parking lot, I felt like I was in a different car. A ZHP transformed into a perfect blend of luxury, physical, as well as auditory driver feedback.

When I followed you and BP it was especially apparent to me that our cars could not be any more different, forget mileage, when BP revved it up and came by me I thought for a second I saw three stripes and an M followed by a 3 on the backside...the mirrors, the height, the sound...I wanted to keep with you guys for awhile longer! I can't wait to see it with the new wheels and without a layer of salt, but shit...that applies to all of our cars (well...most)!

Thanks Dan! I'm sure you will enjoy driving my ZHP when we go out for a photo shoot with other Imola owners when I come down again for one of my usual summer business trips in the Manassas area :thumbsup

Dan, remember seeing pics of my current ZHP's ride height

18469

18468

and actually seeing my car in person didn't quite give you the same appreciation for how it truly is didn't it? Of course seeing my ZHP in this pic shows a ZHP that's completely cleaned up compared to how it actually was from winter driving....but like I told you, your ZHP has so much potential and man it is fresh!!! At least you can see from everyone's example which mods/performance enhancements you will add to yours when the time comes. I'm very interested to see how you will progress on your awesome ZHP :thumbsup

I'm quite sure the UUC Corsa TSE3 exhaust is on top of your list :biggrin

My ZHP averaged 32mpg on the way home....

We reeeeeeeeally had to work for that overall figure. Some interesting points:

We held over 33mpg all the way until we hit the Jersey Turnpike, which is a road that isn't good for fuel economy.

The highest we hit was 33.5 mpg.

By the time we got to my house, it was down to about 30.x thanks for the fun-as-hell Merritt Parkway. Driving that road in your ZHP was a blast!

The highest we hit was 33.5 mpg.

By the time we got to my house, it was down to about 30.x thanks for the fun-as-hell Merritt Parkway. Driving that road in your ZHP was a blast!

This weekend I will be replacing my alternator with a refurbished/rebuilt one.... hopefully the alternator whine I have been dealing with ever since purchasing this car will go away for good.... I also discovered a very disturbing rattle in my rear suspension that I will be tracking down this weekend... not sure what the hell it is but every time I hit a bump something in the rear rattles as if there's something that came loose. This has gotten worse over the course of this damned winter... my ZHP is not liking being in New England.... I know it's telling me this....

I purchased my BC Racing coilovers directly from BC Racing Superstore. Going that route you only get the 1yr factory warranty, that's it. If I went with FCP Euro for my second set, I would have their lifetime warranty on these coilovers. If I end up buying a new set of coilovers, I will be going with FCP Euro and get their lifetime warranty.

For reference, a few weeks ago, we sent in one of Kpro's rear KW V2s for a rebuild due to leakage. Shock body is made of stainless so no worries about corrosion, Springs look ok... about 40k on them. Quoted 8 weeks turnaround. Yikes! Looks like we'll be putting the stock shocks back in it for now...
My old Koni Yellows on the rear both had major corrosion on the shafts under the bump stops.... I don't think any manufacturer's hi performance shocks are immune to problems.

Haven't gotten a response from BC Racing yet.... I do know that the next set of coilovers will be purchased from FCP Euro since they do offer lifetime support on any product they sell. :thumbsup Right now all I need to do is replace the driver's side shock and spring.... having a new set, I will just replace the rear shocks and springs (both driver's and passenger's side) so the set will be fresh. I will then have a good passenger's side shock and spring for "spares" in case I run into any issues in the future and can send the broken set back to FCP Euro for a new one... [emoji15] Just read about the BC's failure... This makes me not want to install them in my car. Especially because you haven't received a reply from them yet...

I got a response from Taylor of BC Racing. He informed me that they could not do anything for me since my coilovers were outside their warranty period (1 yr). This is why I stated that I would be buying from FCP Euro. The coilover kit is a good kit. I have this on my M3 over 4 years now (Feb2011). I put roughly 60k miles on the set I have installed on my M3 w/o any issues. Coilovers are still good and I still have a firm ride. Unfortunately the coilover kit that's installed in my ZHP was not perfect. Sometimes this happens.

To prevent something like this from happening in the future I think just buying the same kit from FCP Euro seems a smart move due to their lifetime warranty. I like the BC Racing coilovers and for the money you do get a lot. :thumbsup I just think I had a factory defect regarding my kit.... as they say.... shit happens...

I got a response from Taylor of BC Racing. He informed me that they could not do anything for me since my coilovers were outside their warranty period (1 yr). This is why I stated that I would be buying from FCP Euro. The coilover kit is a good kit. I have this on my M3 going on 4 years now.

Ahh I see, it's just definitely an eye opener! Being from Minnesota, I experience some pretty bad winters as well, so the corrosion on the springs is also unfortunate to see.

Shit happens, agreed.

Funny thing about the corrosion on the driver's rear spring....this is the only place I am having issues for some reason. When I purchased my M3, the driver's rear spring was broken. I found out cars in New England tend to experience failures of the driver's rear spring. I don't remember exactly why now but this has stuck in my head all this time... When I looked at the rear passenger's spring, it was not corroded and in excellent shape. :dunno

I think the best thing that can be done is to wash the car weekly but when it's so damned cold, I have better things to do than freeze my ass off. I do have access to a heated stall at the Navy base where I work at but that stall ended up getting huge ice blocks at the entrance so I would drag the bottom over that block of ice.... you would think people who work at the auto hobby shop would take care of this....not a chance so I pretty much did not wash my ZHP over the winter which most likely added to the corrosion pictured...

I will be doing a much better job especially since I will be spending the summer months working my ass off on my ZHP to bring it back up to my specs again....boy did it take a serious beating over this past winter :facepalm

Jconlin16
04-07-2015, 07:18 PM
Interesting... That's crazy.

Definitely hear ya about the brutally cold days of winter... I didn't have any interest washing my ZHP during those days! After installing the coilovers, I'll have more motivation to keep it clean though.

Winter always takes a toll on the cars around here :(

I will be upgrading to Swift springs for my coilovers and replacing the rear shocks. The spring rates I have selected are 10k/12k so these should give me a firmer ride and put up with the many imperfections of street driving while allowing me to maintain my low ride height....Looking forward to upgrading my suspension :)

Car being low and hitting unavoidable ice blocks on the roads. Trucks would hit a bump and then a huge chunk of ice would fall....ZHP would then hit chunks and Arqray lip end up taking most of the beating..... it sucks but then this is what I have to deal with if I want to stay as low as I am.... This past winter is probably the worst winter I have seen since moving back to New England in 2005.

As much as I love the Arqray lip I don't think I will go back to this again.... I may try something else...

Complete trunk, right? Not just add-on

Yes Stuart, this is the complete trunk. Here's the link to the same one I have sitting in my spare "BMW Parts" room...

http://www.vividracing.com/catalog/seibon-carbon-fiber-cslstyle-trunk-lid-bmw-e46-2dr-9904-p-29502.html (http://www.vividracing.com/catalog/seibon-carbon-fiber-cslstyle-trunk-lid-bmw-e46-2dr-9904-p-29502.html)

Only difference is that my bootlid has the VIS label and s/n riveted to the inside part of the bootlid. It doesn't have that CSL line on the back like you see with the OEM CSL bootlid. The back of this bootlid is completely smooth and utilizes the trunk handle. In this case I went with this style since the CSL bootlid was never made for sedans from the factory. I wanted this example to be completely different from the OEM CSL bootlid I have installed on my ///M but yet be similar. I think this bootlid fits what I'm looking for. Also, pricing for my bootlid was killer thanks to Tony :thumbsup

charlie, i am pumped to see the CSL trunk on your sedan. especially since it's imolarot. :)

peter

Thanks Peter! Yeah, I'm pumped to see this mounted on my ZHP as well.... I see this bootlid in my house every day.... if I can only catch up with everything then I can do this. This morning I settled with Giya, ordered a new front set of Toyo Proxies T1 Sport tires for my ZHP, and paid off bills... I still have to source new rear shocks for my ZHP to sort out the suspension... seems, it never stops.... I will somehow figure how to fit painting my CSL bootlid in so I can have it mounted.... I would love to do this before the reunion meet but right now with other priorities, this also might slip over to the right...so much to do....

Since acquiring the CSL bootlid, thanks to Tony, doing this has become closer to reality so to speak. So today my ZHP is lowered, rolls on 19" BBS CH wheels in summer and BMW Style 67's in the winter, got smoked corners and side markers, HID fogs using 35W ballasts with 6000k 9006 bulbs, carbon fiber rear diffuser panel, and eagle eyes from Bimmian. Soon I will be adding a CSL bootlid for sedan to complete the look (after my Hawaii trip) I'm going after for this pretty daily driver of mine :thumbsup

I think finding a used set of BBS CHs in 18s is more difficult. When BP got his set I cursed him because they did look good once he got his set sorted out. Although I prefer the 19's because they fill out the wheel well so much more, I too found myself looking for 18's but didn't find them and I discovered that Stuart's old set was still available so I contacted Emily and bought this set. Honestly I couldn't be happier :)

I say do it Bryant!!! You won't regret doing so once you see those wheels mounted on your ZHP :thumbsup Once Botond showed up with his CHs mounted my mouth kinda dropped.... more like drooled.... then I proceeded to curse him because I had to have a set on my ZHP as well. Someone else that knows more can chime in but from what I know a square set up will give the car a bit more of a neutral handling characteristic. Having a stanced set up with larger tires in the rear means more grip in the rear so the car will tend to understeer before it oversteers. Upside of a square set up is that you can rotate tires for more even wear unlike with a stanced set up. I know there's more to it than that, but those are two large points people talk about.

Also, by swapping to BBS wheels over the OEM style 135s will decrease your unsprung weight probably 5+ lbs per corner which will help handling.

+1

This is what I'm led to believe as well :thumbsup I know the track guys (Derek, Chad, BP come to mind) could chime in more detail regarding the physics/dynamics of going with a square setup vice staggered. :thumbsup

Swapping to my OEM Style 67's does save in unsprung weight. I feel it when accelerating in my ///M. The feeling compared to running on my CHs feels immediate.

There's also something about where mass is distributed its affect on rotational inertia, but I'm not up on my physics. Picture when you see an olympic diver and the tuck, they can rotate more quickly than when their body is extended. Applies to wheels as well.

I received my replacement shocks for my ZHP the other day only to find out they are the "improved" version which comes with the 52mm diameter bodies which are much more durable than the previous versions. I ordered the new lower mounts and rings to be used with the new shocks but have to wait an additional 3 weeks before they come available. Anyway it's been two weeks now since I have driven my poor ZHP so I took her out today to Applebees to have lunch with Botond before he headed back home. He was able to sort out his front BBK issue and now everything is A-Okay :thumbsup Here is a picture Botond took of both our cars sporting BBS CH shoes. :)

Ain't that the truth Peter!!! Once I saw these on Botond's ZHP instant jelly ensued.....that is until I got mine ;) 18's feel much better for sure but I always wanted 19's on my sedans so when the opportunity to buy these came up I just couldn't resist. Love these wheels. Of course with the roads the way they are around here, I drive fairly slow these days...

When all the parts come in I will change out the rear shock mounts for the OEM M3 shock mounts. I will also add the rear shock tower plates for extra reinforcement so the rear will be bullet-proof. Then in June after I get back from my Hawaii trip, I will order the Swift Spring upgrade for the ZHP and the suspension will be refreshed.... possibly order a new set of rear Toyo Proxes T1 Sport tires as well :thumbsup

If you want a bullet proof rear shock mount, look into these two options. Much better then an OEM M3 mount that is rubber and will fail over time.
