I haven't done much regarding my project thread so I decided tonight to "experiment" taking photography of my mistress in low lighting conditions with nothing but the lamp post adjacent to my ZHP for lighting. It was fun and I realize I have lot's of fun in store for me with my D5100 :)

After taking these pics, one thing I do know is that when I send in my OE ZHP alcantara steering wheel for Mike to rewrap, it will be done in black alcantara tri-stitch for the ///M :) I really love how the black alcantara looks in my ZHP :thumbsup Anyway, just wanted to share a few pics tonight :)

I did but the oval mirror developed bubbling and needs repair. I found this homelink/compass recessed clown nose mirror for a great deal on ebay and jumped on it. After having this mirror on my ZHP I feel it is better suited since my ZHP is more suited for daily driver duties. :)

Thanks to Gary and Tony I'm now embarking on yet another project for the ZHP...a complete stereo upgrade. I just sourced a new head unit, and backup camera. I still have to get the 5M BMW Fakra extension kit so that I can get everything connected....

Tony gave me a preview of his Eonon unit when he was over the last time. I liked what I saw so here I am ordering the same unit to replace my aging OE nav system...

The project continues.....one step closer to my perfect ZHP :)

I wouldn't have thought of placing the sticker here as well but I did not want to clutter my windows as I already have stickers there (not putting anything on my windshield).

I was looking for something different regarding placement of this sticker so this is where the sticker ended up. I'm leaving it there and if I decide I don't like it then it will come off, otherwise I may leave it there for awhile...we'll see what happens.......

The swap/retrofit is worth it. I do not have a bad back, but it is also not good for my age. I did the retrofit and it had made a big difference in my love for the car and comfort. It can get pricey unless you find some donor seats on Craigslist.

I pulled it off for $160 for both seats (just lumbar).

Charlie, love all the updates. What did those seats come out of? Any chance I could be sitting in them by the 11th?!?!

My best friend installed Recaro Sportster CS seats in Imola nappa leather into his ///M so he gave me his seats. These seats have less than 60k miles driven on them. They were in near mint shape so I took them off his hands. Couldn't ask for a better price :) I will be swapping out my seats for these after replacing the seat covers. Then the old seats will become donor seats for my ZHP's lumbar/side bolster adjustment retrofit project I plan to start in a few weeks once I'm done with my final college class.....then I will have lots of time to do what I truly want to do....work on my BMWs :) Channing....trying not to disappoint with my updates...

When Kyle "upgraded" the stereo system in my ///M, we talked about going big on the stereo system for my ZHP if I was pleased with my upgrade.

What I just posted as my ZHP's stereo upgrade is the result of that discussion. It should do everything I've always wanted in a car stereo. Since I'm an audio guy (Sonar Technician - Submarine Navy) this upgrade is an obvious choice for me ;) Wait till you hear this stereo John :biggrin

What I've been told recently is that what I've been doing regarding modding has been ridiculous. I'm taking that as a good crazy way...:) What can I say????? When the mod bug bit me..... it bit me really hard as you all can see :) There are worse things that can happen in life. I figure since BMWs have become my crazy addiction/passion, I might as well go with the flow and enjoy the ride.

Yeah, my car can be hit and totalled or stolen. That's part of life. If that should happen (god forbid it does!!!) then I will simply move on to my next project. Luckily I will have receipts for everything. :thumbsup

I just sourced my Gruppe M CAI from a friend today and will be looking at this as my next mod (yes, I have many things going on at the moment)...:) I liked my aFe Stage 2 CAI and it has performed very well but since picking up a Gruppe M CAI for my ///M, I've been wanting to get one for my ZHP as well :thumbsup

Having friends on the forum pays well when it comes to modding our rides! Thanks Derek for this wonderful opportunity! Looking forward to Wednesday when we complete our deal :)

No problem Charlie. What exactly is that little box next to that picture? I dont remember that in my engine bay. Looks like Cruise Control some something like that.

Derek, that box is used for the driver's side Xenon light and ballast. All coupes have this little box. I have this in my ///M. Apparently, sedans don't get this additional item....

That part is only particular to M3 coupe/convertible. You can retrofit it onto any e46 though. I have one in my 328i. It's just a relocation bracket and a nice cover. It allowed more clearance for my true CAI to extend into the lower bumper. All in all parts totaled <$25.

I did have to cut the wires and extend them by 6 inches in order to accommodate the new placement.

cakM3
08-12-2013, 02:32 PM
That's interesting to know Justin, thanks for sharing that with all of us! :thumbsup I had assumed it was for coupes since I have an ///M. It never occurred to me that this was an ///M specific thing that could be retrofitted...

Yeah Derek, when I mounted the intake this was one of the things I immediately noticed. There was some space between the front of the intake and metal support bar in front. Once you texted me where you had your support bar mounted, it was very easy to complete my install. Yeah, the Gruppe M will be well taken care of :thumbsup

After adding $251 to the VO and installing a centre console switch with the tire reset button, you'll also need to run a wire from the switch console to the DSC unit.

Otherwise pressing the button has no effect since it's not connected to anything. This is what I have been living with until yesterday....:/

Tony stopped by to help me run that one wire... pin 40 on the connector (X18303) that plugs into the DSC (A65) to the long connector (X1869) Pin 2 that plugs the button panel with the tire reset switch.

One thing to note is that the DSC plug resides in the engine bay so the end that goes into that plug has to have the rubber (water resistent) connector to prevent moisture intrusion into that plug.

Now the next mod is to retrofit rain sensor/auto wipers and auto headlights.....then the ZHP will have all the factory options I care to have for her....:thumbsup Not bad for an '03 ZHP :biggrin

I would just like to say I've been searching for this info for 2 hours now after texting with you this morning Charlie... Again, massive thanks to Tony for being such a master at coding, and thanks to Charlie for posting this info in your project thread.

Actually.....I willend up with a Kevlar Gruppe M for my ///M and a carbon fiber Gruppe M for the ZHP. Two different personalities just like the car they are mounted on :thumbsup

The CF does match your bar. I prefer the kevlar + M3 bar ;)

No, it did not come with the bracket. The bracket is staying with my ZHP though :)

I just drove 500 miles with the carbon fiber Gruppe M intake with a "fully loaded" ZHP and managed to get 29.4mpg on the highway. No issues with the newer Gruppe M CAI.... as expected :thumbsup

Amazing just what having 4 wheels inside the car will do regarding how you drive the car. I've been chillin' on the most part driving on the right side of the highway limiting my speed just to 5mph over the posted speed limit. Don't want the wheels to go all over possibly damaging my interior trim....

Yesterday BP received his Gruppe M intake (shown below) from a very generous mafia member...;)

This frees up the aFe CAI that will be going to Dario along with a spare intake filter and prefilter. :thumbsup

I put Stu's 3:15 back in my car and removed the 3:46. The 3:15 better suits my driving style since I do a lot of highway driving.
I bought the 3:46 direct from TMS but when the box arrived it had Diffs Online labels and shipping address on it so looks like they build all of TMS diffs too.

FYI for you guys looking to buy one... it was $2800 with the optional 3 disk clutch and Z4 diff cover. They were having a sale on the gears so the 3:46 upgrade was free. I got $400 back when I sent them my old diff as a core.
If you don't plan on FI, the 2 disk version and stock diff cover will do fine and that will lower the price a lot.

Charlie left my house with an ear to ear grin on his face... enjoy my friend! I was great seeing you and I had no problem installing that for you.... You enthusiasm for BMWs is surpassed by none I know!

I will respond to everyone's questions... I promise!

At the moment I'm at the last rest stop on the Garden State Parkway before heading into NY and Tapanzee Bridge. Many more traffic cluster awaits me and my ZHP... :/

I want to say the traffic has been very heavy and the LSD has performed beyond my expectations! Switching between lanes with a quickness happens automatically....completely effortless compared to the stock diff. At highway speeds my "improved" ZHP wants to pull hard and the speedo rapidly climbs....its amazing folks!!!

I find myself wondering why I haven't done this mod much sooner??? All I can say to everyone is that if you are able to....this is the mod that will provide an immediate performance gain! I'm so glad I did this with Rob's help!

It was also awesome hanging out with Rob, Kpro, and the twins! The twins were well behaved during my stay! ;) Must have been my baldness :)

Again....I can't thank Rob and Kpro enough for this fantastic mod and for Rob's valuable help installing this last night. He makes this job look so easy!!! :thumbsup

It's the rear diff bushing. When we had the diff out I flexed the bushing and we could see that it was starting to go. That bushing needs to be pressed out.

Yes.

I drive the highway to and from work everyday and the gearing is fine by me :) Driving back home from Rob and Kpro's home, I was completely at ease with the increased RPM in 6th gear. Even with my Corsa exhsust, I didn't find it annoying.

The difference between 3.07 and 3.46 at 80mph is about 250rpm. The difference between a 3.07 and 3.15 would be nearly unnoticeable.

Mine is about 3300rpm @ 80mph. :)
Stock was 2900rpm if I recall.

using 5th gear on the thunderhill straight is going to be interesting at 112mph

If you do get the TS - you will be amazed at the highway PULLLLLLLL in the upper gears

with 3.46 - 1st and somewhat 2nd are used up QUICK...but 3rd and 4th are awesome - 5th on the hwy is great and the best part, on the hwy you will likely never have to downshift from 6th - so much torque and boost
