Dayum, what's the price tag going to be on this?

derbo
06-18-2012, 07:46 PM
parts alone is close to $1100 with my discount. I ordered my flywheel from Autohauz since it was $552 vs my discounted oem flywheel of $800ish

Main stuff is Clutch/Flywheel which was the most expensive part. Got a new guibo disc, rear main seal gaskets, new pivot pin, clutch spring clip, all the bushings for the shifter and Z3M shifter so its a bit shorter. I'm ordering a clutch delay valve too but it wont be in here in time for a friday installation. Clutch job shouldn't take more than 4-5hrs at work. :D

Then next week I'll finally do my oil filter gasket housing and the oil seperator system.

Some updates. I did my clutch and found the clutch disc was at .99mm of pad left and the flywheel has abnormal play. I also saw my rear main seal was also starting to go. Luckily I ordered them all!

I also installed new shifter bushings and a z3m shift lever. I had to grind the ends of the lever to get it to fit with the selector rod but it wasn't that hard to sand down. Initial impressions is that the shifts are definitely with no play but the shifter does sit a bit offset to the passenger for some reason. Overall, it was a good purchase. I had to replace my zhp shifter since the ball on the lever was getting worn and I didn't like the play in it. The bottom lever is definitely lot longer than a zhp one!

Here are some pics to go along with the update.

There is another setting to activate crash warning blinkers. In the event of a crash, the hazards go on. VW have this feature I believe as well. I'm not willing to test if it works LOL. I noticed another setting that would activate interior lights in event of a crash as well.

Feel like that was forever ago Dane...i remember that infamous day...she was my cars dark twin :(...on another note does anyone know what the % reduction is with the Z3M shifter? Sorry to thread jack but im looking to get a short throw and am browsing around for the best option.

derbo
07-04-2012, 12:56 PM

I'm not sure the percentage difference but it is definitely shorter. you can tell by the length of the rod underneath the ball is longer on the z3m lever. I find myself overthrowing my 3rd shifts cause I'm not used to the short throws quite just yet. The feel of the shifting has a bit more notch to it but that was the exact feel I was looking for.

I wanted to remove the slop in my shifter. Since the lever ball is made out of plastic, the ball wears out and introduces play. I figured I might as well get a z3m lever if I am replacing the shift lever. Also I replaced all the rubber seals, the white ball housing, and the clips as well.

Will, it's a factory oem z3m shift lever. You can order it at any dealership or online. It shortens the throw enough but not as much as real aftermarket short shifters.

I recommend anyone to refresh their shifter seals and a new lever for a more solid feel to the car. It's less than $70 to do it.

Derek,

Does the Z3M shifter make that much of a difference?

I know when I swapped out my M3 shifter for a 330d shifter it made a noticeable difference :)

derbo
07-16-2012, 07:29 AM
Charlie,

I'm unsure what the difference between the 330d and the Z3M shifter is. I do know that the ZHP uses a shift lever that doesn't have a bend in it. The other shift levers in the E46 family seems to have bends in the shifter.

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5110/5593374665_b26640f5ea_b.jpg

Comparison to the BMW SSK vs the ZHP (straight one).

The Z3M shifter is relatively straight and works similarly to the ZHP one. I do know the 545i shifter has a longer throw and isn't a short shifter to the ZHP lever. M3 levers are longer throw than a ZHP so I'm not sure where it stands vs the 330d. LOL.

I wish I had a 330d lever to compare it with.

Thanks! I know there is definitely more room to grow but I was consistently in the 1:51.xx (pending traffic) and the fastest lap was 1:50.15. I see a few places where I could brake later and on the gas earlier. Next time probably in october, I'll do it again see if I can learn anything new and get better times. It happens to me all the time but BP will always tell me that my ZHP looks better than his as if I recently detailed mine. Keeping our cars clean is a never-ending battle. I always take in the moments right after cleaning my cars....take pics so that I can enjoy them long after the car gets dirty again....;)

Of course.... my ///M stays cleaner much longer than my ZHP does but that's because I'm driving my ZHP all the time...

How much of a difference did you notice with the CDV removed? I've been debating doing this for some time now.

I removed mine at SIGFest. Took it for a spin after the removal. The whole time I'm thinking to myself, why the fuck was the on the car? It feels so much better now.

You have a replica means it isn't an exact copy. There maybe minor differences to cause that change? I never heard a Simota intake in person before so I wouldn't be able to tell you. Sorry bud.

It's a nice intake. It could do away with the carbon kevlar look to it but I like the noise it makes. Any "HP" gain is a plus. One problem I noticed is the rubber trim piece sits on the metal bracket that bolts up to the headlights. It tends to grind away at the rubber trim over time. That is nothing more than a comestic issue.

CDV is the best thing i've removed. Best part of the mod was that it was FREE!! Clutch is more direct and it feels like I can chirp 2nd with my track tire setup which would've never been able to do with the CDV in. I'm very happy with deleting it. I don't really see any downfall in removing it if you know how to drive stick on any other car.

Overall setup of the car feels fantastic. The new dunlops are getting some miles on time before I start taking them out for a more spirited drive. The car is getting to the point where it's a great daily driver and only maintenance is left to upkeep. I think the only thing left I could possible do, would be a LSD. Hopefully next year.

I actually worked at the dealership while I was in college for electrical engineering. I actually made the mistake not to intern while in college and worked at bmw for the perks. That was a mistake that ultimately made it hard for myself to market to the EE field. I finally found an internship willing to take me on after 2 years of graduating. Now I am back in my field doing ASIC Design Engineer. :)

Hopefully this means in a year or two = new daily car. This means ZHP will have less compromises for street-ability. :)

It's been awhile since I've updated this thread. Nothing much has happened to the car since Sept. It's just been used as a workhorse taking me back from work to home and so forth.

I just got back from a Black Friday Bobs Donut Buttonwillow event!

Here is just a shot of the BMW while I take a look at my GoPro videos. I wasn't too happy with the Dunlops as they overheated quite fast as I picked up the pace but they were definitely managable. I like my RE11s better, but for half the cost the dunlops are pretty damn good!

You use the space on the track nicely. Your lines are clean and I can hear it in the engine because there is not much fiddling/readjusting so you now the track well! Your buddy's 540i is movin' for such a heavy vehicle! It looks like it's got just a tad more high end in the long straights but it's weight sure shows when you have to brake early from extreme high-speed so the 3 and the 5 doesn't mate into a 4. :shifty His lines aren't as wide as yours, but I'm not sure what his car is doing. He likes to keep it tighter and not use the whole width of the track. I can see it in the way his suspension loads in the double corners/chicanes/S bends, he's really working that heavy beast!

Your engine sounds different! Or is it just a lot better sounding when on the ground...I'll have to try that and open my door, stick my head out the window while at WOT being careful not to slice my head off by the door. :biggrin

Yeah...my dad has a 540i and when I drive it, it just feel so buttery smooth at "rocketship" mode. Friends are amazed how quick a 540 is especially with that V8 growl. When my dad drives my car he thinks the 330's acceleration feels the same, if not more than his 540. It's an awesome road trip car. When I'm on the highway moving at 70MPH though...a quick WOT and you're moving into the 100+ range really quick. My little 330 wouldn't be able to keep up with that.

But I do fall asleep in the back of the E39 like a baby on road trips without the sucking the thumb part. :P

The e39 is my favorite 5 series. The one that started the whole angel eyes craze haha.

They accelerate very similar to a 330i on the freeway but once in 4th gear the 540i starts to walk away on the straight. I've sat in it while he threw the car around at the track and I must say he has to throw it around in order to get it to corner. He is good at it and it makes a nervous but exhilarating ride as a passenger. As a passenger in my car, I'm too consistent and it seems boring to them ha.

Rovert,

The videos all at the bumper position are all the same mods as far as sound/power-wise. I do tend to go a lot wider than my buddy does but I'm not sure that's always the quickest. It's definitely fun to chase him once in awhile but he sure makes my front end dirty!

Haha...gotcha. Your car just sounds so nice and meaty...different than what mine sounds like from inside!

I have a feeling you're taking it tighter because you don't have the power to need to go that far out. The more furious the acceleration and weight...the wider line you need. I can take everything with squiggly lines with my E46...but when I drive my dad's E39, everything just seems to be a little bit wider. When I drive my mom's minivan....well all h#LL breaks loose and since it's AWD...it's pretty fun in the corners. LOL.

You're consistent with your experience and subconscious smoothness which means any panic situation on the street you'll react to in the best possible way your car can handle. :) The smoother you are the faster you are! My driving instructors pounded me on being smooth when I first learned how to drive good many many years ago. Now I can't be rough even if I try....but I can still throw my car around for style points! LOL

One thing I do want to learn is drifting. Drifting is probably the best form of training for a spinout situation :D

Rovert
12-19-2012, 12:34 AM
It sure is...You've learned the dynamics of vehicle balance. That plays an important role in learning how to drift. Drift is not about pulling the e-brake and counter steering like so many young ones think, ending themselves on a curb or on a light post. You've got to know where your vehicles weight is going and how fast it is shifting to create that inertia to throw the vehicle's limits past the traction circle without overstepping them so much that it's 100% unrecoverable.

With your consistency I know you'd do awesome! I think that learning how to slide the rear end out is more easier with an LSD for sure. My friend's M3 can pull out of a slide really nice and smoothly. Get on the throttle and smoothly squeeze or release and you've got controllable loss of rear traction. Our open diff'ed non M's are rough! It takes a very wet/slippery surface to mask that one tire has just regained grip while the other is fighting to hold a slide. LOL. A really cool thing to try is driving a FWD car in the snow with snow tires on the front and all seasons in the back. You can just flick the steering wheel more than the rears can hold traction and you're drifting! Hit the throttle and the front will stay in front of the rear! So easy...hours of fun! Hahaha.

I remember spending time at Thunderbird Raceway in Phoenix on a skid pad using CTS sedans rigged with hydraulic training wheels:
http://imageshack.us/a/img264/7449/bondurantschool75oj0.jpg

Holy man that was a ride. I had way too much playing "on ice" when I was in Arizona. LOL.

The instructor had this at his control in the car:
http://imageshack.us/a/img140/1427/bondurantschool73rh4.jpg

Then I ended up doing this to the rear tire:
http://imageshack.us/a/img264/3773/bondurantschool72ng8.jpg

Can we rig something up like that for our car to play with? LOL

derbo
12-19-2012, 12:38 AM
what exactly does this hydraulic wheel do?

Rovert
12-19-2012, 01:07 AM
Does exactly what you would feel on any surface but from perfectly dry to complete ice. It raises the chassis from the suspension thus lowering traction on the corner that it's attached to. Lift the rears up to full height and boy, it doesn't matter how good you are...you're going for a ride and your front tires which aren't lifted are going to become the base of the pendulum. LOL. Lifting it up maybe 10% might simulate rain. Going to 50% may simulate snow/ice. Anything higher and it's just for fun...it's like half the car is in space. It's just a training tool that advanced driver training schools have to teach you the art of controlling an out of control vehicle.

Dang I love to participate in this!!! I think the main portion I want to learn is how to correct a spin in the event the steering wheel goes over 1.5turns. The main concern I believe is that I have no experience a full lock to lock correction in this car and I would like to practice the spin corrections. Perhaps the next skidpad day, I will have to try it out.

I'm getting tired of switching to longer bolts for the 12mm spacers every track day. I ordered some lugnuts for the car but still deciding on which wheelstuds to purchase.

Well if you are in an uncontrollable spin and have the ability to lock the brakes, doing that prior to knowing what line your car will pick will at least give you a predictable line of "carnage" whether it's straight ahead on the track or angled off straight into the field of grass. :D Once you've slowed down then you will have to have quick steering work and unlocking the brakes to direct the spin somewhere else! Good luck with that. LOL

I have the BimmerWorld 75mm "standard" or "street" wheelstuds. They make wheel changes so much easier. Can support up to 12mm spacers but I found with 5mm spacer on front, you have to take a little care when hand starting each lug nut before spinning them on with the impact wrench. If I had a 12mm spacer it would be even more work to start each lug nut. If you don't mind studs sticking out a little more or think you might ever want at 15mm or 20mm spacer, I suggest go with the 82mm ones. Note that BimmerWorld 82mm studs don't have a hex end so you need to lock two nuts together to tighten each stud (with red thread locker).

Nice plans. If you go s54 swap would you just change out the whole powertrain back to the LSD?

From what I understand, the driveshaft for a 6spd follows the rear end you decent to use. (I could be wrong)

The plan is to get either a ZHP 3.64 LSD or 3.62 M3 subframe/LSD by March/April. ZHP 3.64 would use the ZHP drive shaft and the M3 would use the M3 driver shaft. I'm not 100% sure which one I want to do just yet. If i choose the M3 LSD it will be cheaper for parts but require replacement M3 sway bars and require alot more labor. It would make more sense to use the M3 LSD since I am planning to do an S54 swap.

ZHP 3.64 Ratio

Pros:
-Aftermarket LSD which allows great customization for the LSD characteristics
-Easier to Install than M3 subframe.

Cons:
-S54 swap can complicate the rear end situation (I believe it works but not 100% sure)
-Expensive

M3 rear end
Pros:
-Will make the S54 swap complete when finished.
-Factory LSD
-parts are less expensive than a custom zhp diff.

Cons:
-needs more parts to install
-requires M3 sway bars
-could be more expensive after labor
-condition of pieces sometimes can be unknown depending on seller.

I have a quick discussion question for those to have been following my build. (Thank you for your time)

Should I replace the subframe with
OEM factory bushing replacements?
AKG poly bushings?
AKG solid mounts?

I am uncertain how NVH effects correlates to each type of material for a subframe.

I just bought a M3 rear end for those who were wondering. :shifty

I.E. don't put solid bushings in the diff and then keep the subframe bushings stock.

Go have fun with this one Derek!

It's not here yet..but here is the pic :P

Parts I plan to swap:
-Subframe
-Differential
-Sway Bar
-Half-shafts
-Driveshaft

The plan is to replace the bushings on the subframe/Diff bushings with either OEM or Poly Mounts.

I'm not 100% sure that the 330i trailing arms and brakes are interchangeable. I've seen threads on E46F that say it is not necessary but one member here (Jlastor) did write a reivew where the halfshafts did not fit the 330i trailing arms and that has me concerned.

http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?7030-Starting-M3-rear-end-diff-swap

I had a talk with Kalim tonight on the topic, and exhaust clearance with the subframe also came into concern. I might be choosing a new exhaust sooner than I thought. Also turner motorsports reinforcement plates pop into the topic. I am undecided on the reinforcement since I already filled the frame with the BMW Epoxy Foam.

Only a few concerns but only one way to find out! Hopefully I will be able to take pictures and have a good log of the install as well.

I strongly urge you to use poly bushings. You'll have to zip tie your speed sensors in place to keep functionality. Len has done this.

Well the biggest issue with reinforcing the subframe is just getting everything out, right? I am not familiar with the epoxy foam, but I would put in the reinforcement while I was at it too just to make the car more stout. My .02.

Looks great though buddy.

These two pictures keeps me hopeful that the exhaust will work! Len got the 330i trailing arms to work and I am hopeful that is the same case for me. My reasoning to do so is to minimize M3 parts during the swap.

Wert, Cam,

I will definitely consider poly and the reinforcement kit. If it is significantly most expensive that OEM rubber, I may just opt for OEM Rubber since the BMW is still running rubber all around. Like Justin said, If you take care of the weakest link, the next link in line will be the one that gains the stress.

Vas,

they sell more than one. :)

After looking at the reinforcement kit by TMS, I'm not 100% I am able to do it. The instructions state that it is needed to cut the trunk top floorplan area to weld a new support bracket. I injected the structural foam into that area through the two holes next to the square area they cut out. Unless I cut it out and remove the structural foam in that area (however difficult that may be..)

Performance technic charges around 1k for a subframe reinforcement, they weld in the plates and everything. I think 1k is for parts and labor, which is a pretty good deal.

I'm not sure how they would deal with the top part of the reinforcement since I already injected the area with the structural foam. Thank you for the heads up. I know a guy that works there so perhaps he can help lower the labor costs a bit.

If I had those wheel studs or those extended lug nuts, I wouldn't have any trouble bolting up my D-force wheels with the 5mm spacer. It turns out the design of the D-force LTW5 makes it slightly awkward to start the lugnuts by hand with the spacer and using 75mm studs. it doesn't happen with the stock style-135 wheels.

With 10mm you don't need any longer than 75mm. I have 12.5mm and it is the maximum 75mm studs will take. I saw the 82mm bimmerworld ones and thought sweet that's what I need!

I can't see using more than a 12mm spacer up front (famous last words) so my current studs should be good. It would just be a big hassle to start the lug nuts by hand. I would need to start them using the deep socket, or get extended lug nutz like yours.

But I have time... time to wear out current (245mm) tires. Time to kick myself for not joining the APEX Arc-8 group buy with 17x9 wheels (because I already have 2 sets of wheels). Time to wait for BimmerWorld's 12-days of Christmas 2013 sale to return.

I don't know how far away it is, but I once took measurements with a sound meter. At 50 feet it was high 80's for decibel levels at redline. We also did passes and it never exceeded 90dB.

Our sound limit at my local autox is also 90 or 91dB (can't remember) and I've never got called out on it. That is the same meter we used to record my sound measurements.

I may be wrong on this, but I *think* Lime Rock's sound measurements happen at the start/finish line, which would be right next to the main straight.

Thanks man. I think I will most likely stick to OEM. The car itself doesn't have much poly anywhere..I have E92 M3 mounts but RE tranny mounts which are all rubber. I think since I daily drive the car, its best to just keep it at OEM bushing or a stiffer rubber at most.

The rear end is arriving Feb 4th. Then its time to assess the the damages and what I need to buy that's missing (almost guaranteed from a salvage yard)

The only way the BMW Performance BBK is worth the money is if you rebuild them with the StopTech pistons. By the way, they cost $450, so you're looking at some serious cash.

I don't know about Derek, but I found them to not really be worth their price. If I knew at the time that they'd need rebuilding after a couple of track days, then I would've bought some Wilwoods and called it a day. I loved these until I found about the piston cracking issue that's so common with these calipers, and still liked them enough until they actually destroyed one of my rotors from a stuck piston.

For street driving they're fine though; they look the part that's for sure.

B,

Seems like you and I fell into the impulsiveness and the "hotness" of the 6 piston caliper too. Racingbrake.com has a better setup with SS pistons with high temp seals but is still in the same price range just for parts alone. I didn't know you lost a rotor to a stuck piston...what did you end up doing? getting rid of the brakes or rebuilding the caliper?

I've talked to Dave @ APEXraceparts and he mentioned the 17" will clear 345mm rotors no problem. He believes the caliper will also clear just a matter of getting the right offset. My 17x8.5 +40 is cutting it close but it may work or may need a 10mm spacer.

But I know Derbo drives harder and faster than me at the track, so he might need more heat management capacity!

Like I said the only reason I got the 135i was they looked so nice in the e46. Their track performance isn't exactly worth the price though. The looks of a bbk is a great deal but for a track built car I think I may go back to 330i brakes

We made some progress. Disassembled the diff and arms off the subframe. The RTABs are shot on the trailing arms and looks to be the original ones from 01. Shot and destroyed. Used a RTAB tool to remove it them both and the last one actually broke the RTAB tool. :facepalm

We made an assessment on the parts to be replaced and I made an order this morning for a bunch of stuff.

After that, we changed the MAF sensor and some parts on the red beast and made me want an S54 more and more.. Two pics poor pics of Kalim's S54 sedan.

New parts look awesome Derek! The 3.64 LSD should be a nice upgrade for the 330 ZHP :)

- Do you wanna sell me your 3.07 diff? My 3.46 diff is a bit too much for a 5 speed (talking about my 323i).

If you want to pay shipping - I have a 3.07 diff sitting here you can have

Twin screw it. If you still want more power then strengthen the internals and go nuts with boost.

That's what Brian (highboostin330) did, but the head lifted on his built motor.
Then we made an S54 happen in his car. :headbang

lets be fair - he races the car often and the engine had a good amount of mileage

I haven't experienced any of these problems

There are a handful of those running around now.
Good deal on a S85+DCT came up a few days ago on m3forum and m5board. The seller just put it up on ebay.
Was considering it for another swap, but I found that I can get a whole donor car in CA for a little bit more.

Good point, but the same is true of Derek's car. It's got plenty of miles on it now and it gets tracked.
I'm sure if he kept the boost reasonable, it'd be reliable. What are you running on yours?

15 if ESS asks - but I had a 1.5 smaller pulley - for 16psi

That exactly is my most likely plan. Buy a whole chassis and part out everything I don't need to recoup costs. I don't wanna buy a motor/tranny then realize I need to order all sorts of parts that weren't included

Exactly. I was ready to pull the trigger, but based on experience from my S54 swap, there are always a few more things you need.

my next plan (maybe in 5-10 years) is to buy an E60 M5, cut it and the 2002 up, chop/channel the 02 unibody and weld it to the M5 unibody so it looks like a '69 and goes like a '10... it's gonna be one badass 5002

Very ambitious! Sounds like it could be a great project.

We all know that I will be in the same position as Brian and blow up my car again. Track days and a stock m3 motor seems like the most reliable setup compared to a s/c 330i. Especially since I'm about to hit 122k.

Oh i know. It sounds awesome.

There is talks of moving on to an M3 or a NSX again with my brother. I take his Fit for daily and give him my ZHP... but it's just talks. If i can find a nice ZCP for a good deal.. I may jump ship.
