Just throwing it all in! I say to have at least $2k laying around if you want to do this the right way with refreshed parts.

Kalim was kind enough to lend me some garage space and its' been taking awhile to get everything setup. The goal is to get it all out by this saturday.

I'll double check if it is the ignitor or ballast or bad grounds. I highly doubt its the bulb. I'm leaning towards the ignitor

Some pictures and some info.

Friday Night:

Kalim and I tackled getting the 330i subframe and parts ready to be dropped early saturday morning. We first disassembled the brakes and ebrake shoes. The calipers were taken left hanging so that we did not have to bleed the whole system again. We then removed the driveshaft and the subframe was basically ready to be removed after detaching some sensors off the chassis.

After friday night meet, we finished up by putting in the new diff cover with new bushings on the M3 LSD. Parts dept forgot to give me the drain and fill plugs for the LSD. Luckily Kalim had a spare set for his own car that he graciously use. (I owe him new plugs. :)).

Saturday:

Starting a little later around 10:30am, we manage to drop the 330i subframe and get it out. Miles helped and started to assemble the M3 driveshaft.

We then started to build the m3 subframe to install in. The ebrake shoes gave us some trouble installing but once that was squared away we managed continue on without too much difficulty.

We ran into a couple of issues when we were doing the swap. My extended studs were STUCK on. I couldn't get them off. I think I will just buy new ones. Also, the M3 rear end swap I have, has grey plug vehicle speed sensors. My car has blue plugs. The blue plugs are 02+ cars and the grey plugs are -02. I either have a faulty sensor or incompatbile sensors communication as my speedo does not work and I have DCS/ABS/Brake lights on.

Another issue is the input shaft seal is leaking. It's not completely dripping, but its something I need to address soon.

The heatshield manage to get a little bent during installation and was hitting something on the driveshaft while first test drive, that cause a loud obnoxious rattle while driving. That has been solved so there are only two more issues to deal with before I get an alignment.

Thank you very much to Kalim and Miles for all their hardwork and help!!.

I blame Kalim for all this. This ZHP was suppose to be stock when I bought it.. :facepalm

Where are the videos?!

Didn't take pics or videos of the finished product yet.

Derek had to make an important appointment later in the day, so we wanted to finish by 4pm. We kept up a pretty aggressive pace and finished pretty close to our goal. A couple of snags, like the bent heat shield that Derek mentioned, forced us to go back under the car so we had to forgo the fun stuff.

So maybe later when Derek gets a chance!

There are a few snags left to deal with:

-Wheel Speed Sensor causing no speedo, ABS, DSC, Brake lights to go on. (May need spacers if the blue plug sensors are too long and hit the bearing/hub portion area thing a mobber)
-Input Shaft Seal leaking
-Missing Pushrod (not too important but it bothers me that its not there.
-Alignment after all this debocle.

Thank you Kalim. I know I blame you but it doesn't mean I dont love it. HAHAHAH. now..S54... I better buy one 04+ to minimize hassle..hahah

Yea I'm glad that it wasnt a bad diff and it was just the heatshield bent a little out of shape. When you look at the heat shield underneath you cannot even tell its hitting it. I think its only under load when the driveshaft shifts a bit where it decides to hit a bit.

BTW, Kalim I ordered 4 more plugs from BMWSF. I'm pretty sure they have it in stock always since its such a universal part. I have your lugnuts as well.

Yeah, it's funny that the pushrod was missing from my parts kit when I did my swap, too. No worries. That's easy to sort out and then we can both do the welding for the V-braces now that we know the exhaust clears. :)

And yes, definitely go with a later S54 donor for fewer hassles, haha.

This underbody makes me want to get some parts to complete the bottom. I didnt realize how many extra parts the m3 underbody has compared to the ZHP.

-The Pushrods/V-brace
-The plastic panels covering the fuel tank
-the Transmission covers
-Underbody M3 brace with the transmission vents on it.

I wonder if it will fit with the HKS exhaust with the V brace.

Kalim found out that there are two blue plugs and more information about the MK60 vs the MK20 DSC system.

Looking in the ST034 pdf I find this for the MK60 DSC.

There are two types of sensors used in the rear axle of the E46:
• The short sensor is used on the 325i (any transmission) and 330i automatic.
• The long sensor is used on the 330i manual transmission version.

Doesn't say much about the M3 but if REALOEM is correct, it uses the short one like all other E46s except 330i manuals. :facepalm. Looks like I need to find some spacers to run temporarily till I can get a set of wheel sensors.

Grey Plug:
inductive sensors
Blue plug:
magnetoresistive sensors

cyberkaa

Kalim found out that there are two blue plugs.

Oddly enough 330i manuals have one abs sensor. The rest of the cars autos/M3 use another blue plug sensor. how strange.

Yep, exactly what I was saying I read in the tech docs. It's weird how they singled out just the 330 manuals.

Went back to my old work to replacing the input seal on the differential. I always thought it was strange that M3 driveshafts have open greased ends. Seems kinda silly?

after new ABS sensors, a new input seal on the diff and an alignment, the M3 diff is finally in and running properly!!

Couple things left on the list:

-Remove stock m3 sway bar for something else...hmm Turner sways? and sell my UUC sway bars for 330i.
-the camber bolt is stuck on the driver side and siezed. Luckily I wanted 2 degrees of negative camber and it was to about 2 deg and 20minutes. I have to address this by getting new bolts and torching that damn bolt out.

And yes Bruce, those are scratches on the HKS exhaust :P

Is it possible to retain the stock Non-M brakes and axles while converting to the M Differential, RTAs and Subframe.

Does the Differential accept the input and output shafts from a Non-M?

Justin,

Let me make sure I understand your questions.

-You are trying to use non-M brakes and axles with the M3 Differential/rear trailing arms and subframe. It this correct?
-Does the M3 differential accept the non-m driveshaft and half-shafts from the non-m?

Kalim and I had a discussion about this.

in a 6spd 330i, the absolute minimal to do a swap based on other threads and plausibility:

-M3 Driveshaft
-M3 Subframe
-M3 Diff
-M3 Axles
-M3 ABS speed sensors (if you have a 330i manual with MK60 DSC unit.

M3 trailing arms have a different mounting location for the calipers. You will have to retain the M3 calipers and rotors.
M3 also have a much larger parking brake shoe (thicker) than the non-M. This is help with TOKYO DRIFT as the BMW parts guy said to me. :rofl

Originally I wanted to do the absolute minimal but it makes it easier to figure out what parts you need down the long run if you know its ALL M3 in the back.

Yes! new abs sensors are not cheap.. it was like $350 :facepalm for OEM. But that diff seal was leaking BADDDD.

Darn that seal. :/

And $350 is WAAAAAY too much for the OEM sensors. They're $120 per side for Genuine BMW or $90 per side for Ate, which I would be ok with seeing as how they make the DSC unit, too.

Yes. All questions answered correctly. I have a 328i 5speed so the driveshaft will need to be chopped and have the six bolt flange welded on.

If I can get away with reusing the wheel speed sensors from my current setup, that will help.

And in order to use the stock brakes, would I need to reuse my stock non M trailing arms? I am fine with it. It's unfortunate that the axles can't be kept. Or at least swap input and output hubs.

Thanks for the help. I'm in contact with a guy in CT for the whole shebang...trying for under $900. But he wants $450-500 for the differential alone...who's to know how it was treated? If it was an original owner parting out sure...but that's an expensive paperweight should you find it's in non-woking condition.

You might want to cross reference the ebrake cables as well. The 330i ebrake cable is exact same part number as the M3 one.

I also forgot to mention, you need the M3 rear sway bar as well since the non-m will hit the diff.

Electrical things love to go at the same time don't they?

Passenger Mirror is now not working:
-Reverse lights go on
-Memory Mirror settings do not work
-Driver side can adjust.

HMMMM. Driver side motor has been replaced last year. I hope its something silly. Dont feel like buying another motor.

Driver side AL headlight has an intermittent failure to turn on. My guess is the ignitor
-Check bulbs
-Check ballast
-finally check ignitor.

Initial Impressions of the M3 Diff:

It is mad short. I find myself using 4th and 5th gear in town where I normally be in 3rd/4th. The car definitely feels peppier. I haven't had a chance to test how the car handles. It might be bittersweet since it has an OEM M3 rear sway in the back instead of my UUC. I do notice a bit of understeer on initial turn in, but I'm unclear if it is from the LSD or the sway bar. /me shrug. When I have more time I'll be sure to test the LSD more :)

Freeway speeds: 70mph is around 2900rpm. 80mph is around 3200-3300rpm. My average on the freeway now has dropped to around 28-27mpg instead of the 30mpg. I've been hitting a bit of traffic in the morning so I doubt its going to make too much of a difference.

Overall, I think it was a good choice.

It's a good gearing for Sears Point. I'm curious how it will do for Laguna. Since this car will now stop being a daily driver, MPG wasn't too important of a loss for the benefits of the LSD/Finalgear change.

I think the 3.46 is the best compromise with a custom clutch diff.

It's in the bag with the BMW P/N sticker on it. It's just a ring and pinion swap. Un-bolt the 3.62 on the LSD and bolt on the 3.15. I'd pay a shop to do it so it's guaranteed. And then do the rest of the install my self.

Yeah, I have some UUC sways we were going to install with a diff swap, haven't got around to it, obviously you don't need that since you already have a set.

When I bought my HKS it came in one heavy, large, & superior packaged box, probably can't duplicate that so an estimate on shipping in 3 separate smaller boxes would be good. I'm suspecting shipping coast to coast is gonna be a $100 or so.

Recently I've had the topic of focusing on my front brakes.

Problem:
135i calipers have a known heat problem. It is accelerated when used at the track with aftermarket pads that generate more heat. The ceramic piston cap will crack and will need replacement.

My calipers see alot of track time with aftermarket pads and I foresee this problem arising soon. I need to find a good solution for when it does happen.

Solutions:

I really see about 3 reasonable solutions.

1st solution is to go back to 330i brakes. I sold my old calipers to a local E46 owner and I would need to buy the whole front setup. This solution seems a little silly since I would need new track pads again for the car. It might not make sense anymore.

2nd solution is to rebuild the pistons on the 135i. This one is the more complicated one. Initially like Chad, I saw there was a set of Stoptech aluminum pistons that could replace the OEM pistons. Now there is a new set of Stainless Steel pistons from RacingBrake.com that see potential. The battle between SS and AL begins. The SS pistons seem reasonable as they are similar in price but heat transfer is slower in the SS than Aluminum. This can be beneficial as the 135i caliper already has a heat problem. I need to look into this more with the 135i guys and see if they have any insight on this portion.

3rd Solution is to get Stoptech 332mm Brake kit to replace the 135i and be done with it.
This one is a toughie as the brakes are designed for the E46 and brake bias may not be affected as much. The kit itself barely fits my 17" wheels and I might have to use a 5mm spacer to run them. Replacement rotor rings are expensive as well.

I think the 2nd solution with the stainless steel pistons might be the best choice for me to minimize cost in the long run as well. Since I'm not experiencing brake fade with the current setup, I think I just need to setup the pistons so it can take the abuse over and over again. Hopefully I can research and see if 1ers received good results with the RacingBrake SS pistons.

Any opinions would be appreciated :)

Are the stoptechs a two piece rotor? If they are I would go with that.

Are the stoptechs a two piece rotor? If they are I would go with that.

The stoptechs are indeed a true two rotor setup.

The bmw performance rotors are the semi-floating rotors.

The main reason I am having trouble wanting to go to Stoptech.
-Barely fits my current track rims.
-I don't want to run spacers, which means I need new rims which will be another item to replace.
-Currently I have a setup where I swap rotors and pads for street duty and have a seperate set for track duty.
-Replacement rotors can be expensive. From what I've seen, they are around $250-300 each side. This can be difficult for me to want to do the same setup as I had with the bmw performance brakes.
-more expensive than the BMW brakes I have right now.

Course the benefits of Stoptech:
-The rotor is larger and thicker for better heat dissipation.
-Ease of changing pads without removing the caliper
-A system that was designed for the E46.

This makes it hard to say yes to the Stoptech but it doesn't rule it out either...

Minor pictureless update:

Ever since the M3 rear end swap, I noticed the rear end seems to be drooping a little lower than it was before the swap. It would seem the GC rear height adjuster reinforcement plates have bent a little over the years of usage. It is probably from a few apex hops here and there at the track. :innocent

I am planning to call GC to see how much the plate seperately is. Perhaps I may replace my rear perches as well if they are relatively cheap since they have worn out the top portion of the perch over the years of going up driveways and being on lifts. I also plan to order new swift 7" 65mm 10Kg/mm springs to replace the rear 6" 10Kg/mm springs to help gain some height back. The perches are pretty high up already.

I'm contemplating selling the GruppeM intake for now and getting an AFE down the line. I got the intake for the noise but that seems irrelevant with the TSE3. AFE seems to be putting better numbers on the Dyno and with a Eurocharged Tune, this will benefit the most. For now I will use a K&N filter I had right before i got the Gruppe M intake.

Sway bars are still on the pending items. Since I got that exhaust, the sway bars will have to wait till I have extra cash for it. Also waiting for a sale or something for them. lol.

While I was taking apart the center console, I decided to remove the DICE kit from my car. I no longer have a 4S and opt to replace the DICE kit with a more universal AUX kit.

I already wrote $639 VO into the modules with NCSExpert but I could not communicate with the TCU. Now I am looking for the 455 Bluetooth TCU. Perhaps I'll just order it from getbmwparts for $338...

derbo
08-26-2013, 12:03 AM
While I am refraining from paying full pop for a 455 TCU for just bluetooth, I started to play with the AUX input.

As mentioned in a previous thread, I wanted audio line out to the AUX while be able to charge the phone. I have somewhat a terrible solution at the moment:

BMW iPod Cable:
http://c1552172.r72.cf0.rackcdn.com/403109_x600.jpg

to a Apple Lightning 30-pin Adapter.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31sgHSkZ7UL._SX300_.jpg

One odd thing happened when I ended plugging both the USB and the AUX together. The AUX disappeared from the radio modes! It only occurs when the phone is powered. I suspect that when the phone is powered, somehow the AUX line is getting power and shorting out causing the radio to think it's no longer connected.

It almost sounds like there is a ground loop and I need to add in a ground loop isolator. I'll think more about it tomorrow, but I bet that will solve the problem.

It turns out using a regular 3.5mm male to male cable and apple official lightning cable still causes the AUX to suddenly disappear. I really suspect the audio line's ground somehow is shorting making the BMW "AUX Check" think there is nothing plugged into the line-in.

It definitely looks like a ground loop isolator will be the solution to this.

How is this possible... SF is all of 49 sq mi. SD is 4200 and I'm only at about 10k since Jan for the E21 (with many many miles on the E46 and E38 as well)

I commute to San jose (114mile round trip) for work. Also my girlfriend lives near berkeley (land of prii) and thats about 50mile round trip. I do alot of driving. :) I'm just glad its not on the BMW and on the Prius.

Makes sense, I assumed you spend most of your time in the City. Your Yota is basically the equivalent of my E21, a car that I can just dump miles onto. I do a min of 79 miles a day just to/from work so beaters are the way to go to save miles on the ZHP! Mine not be as efficient as yours, but still more than the modified 3.0 will accomplish on it's best day in my topography

I didn't want another project so what car would be the car I would not waste money on? A Prius. with EPA doing 56mpg, BT audio, and keyless entry. Sure I'm spending like in the $20k+ but I have peace of mind that the car will work and I dont have to deal with it.

Mine cost me $1400. Another $1k to get street legal, $1500 to get it suspension/safety wise decent. Now my friends are trying to get me to dump tons of money to make it fast. One guy wants me to do S14 2.3 crank/rods, the other wants me to go 6cyl. Either way, way more than I paid for the car.

AFE Intake or Eurocharged Tune?

Which would be better right now? :)
AFe will be key in unlocking more power with tuning.

AFE intake then Eurocharged tune.

However.... He can always get tune, save up for AFe then retune for free.

^I need to deal with this. I want to eventually get the Dinan overbore TB, but I have enough mods to honestly need a tune to just run decent.

Seth, I'll send you a message

I totally understand. If I had the time I would have went this route. Unfortunately I needed a car ready to go and I didn't have time to search for a good example to buy.

JDM Toyota window visors

Drop that Prius like it's hot.

And on track with my mileage? You cheat! You work that far away! I work harder for my miles because 95% of the miles are "I drive because I FEEL LIKE IT" miles! :biggrin
