That piece is surprisingly heavy, the material is dense. Just a guess, he carved out the bottom of it, leaving a frame and then used lighter material (foil) to create a seal / barrier from the engine. Thus, lose a few lbs while still providing a seal from engine compartment for the fresh air vent.
Someone on the old m3forum made a replacement tray from either fiberglass or carbon for same purpose; weight savings.
Guy is going hardcore with gutting the full interior and getting a cage in. He was always obsessed with weight and the cabin filter housing is quite beefy

I’m guessing it’s just cheaper for them to make that thick and heavy to mitigate heat soak from the engine bay into the HVAC.
This is what I do too. at least for like normal driving. For more spirited driving, I just stab the pedal with lower side close to the heel.
I do agree that sometimes when the car adapts, it's all slow and stuff. Right now, it's perfect. Only takes the battery not being installed for 2 years :rofl
