BTW, you don't "need" a dual mass flywheel with the 6-speed. Plenty of folks have done a single mass conversion.
I don't really feel like looking for it now, but I saw that info on e46fanatics. And wow, I thought the single mass conversion was only possible for 5 speeds. I guess we will have to wait and see. Once I finish the swap, I'll see if I am comfortable with the gear ratios of that 5 speed.

    Yup! That's how I do!:
Anyway, I don't really feel like making a whole seperate build thread for this project since there are a few auto to manual swap theads on e46fanatics with detailed info and lots of pix.

Finally took it out! What a pig! I had to use a ratchet strap and hook it to the rear subframe and pull it out! It just didn't wanna come out at all!!

Even though I removed the 3 bolts that hold the torque converter to the flywheel, it still sat in place! I had to remove it seperately. Hence the oil spill! Stupid thing!!

Yes, a tranny swap on jackstands. I do tend to get innovative!

SpecE46 guys all run the 5 speeds due to the 6 speed being not as robust.

Never heard that but I don't follow SpecE46 either. I sure like the top end with the 6th cog. Can't imagine doing any highway driving with only 5. Especially now that I have a higher gear ration in the LSD.

    That's pretty vague...

The gear ratios are almost the same, just with no overdrive (1:1 5th gear). Since I had this setup in my E30, you'll be revving about 3000 at 70 if you retain your stock rear end.

I don't know how often they outright fail, but the synchros, especially in second, are a little weak. Pretty easy to bind second gear if you shift fast. The 5-speeds might be stronger, but perhaps more importantly, they are more easily rebuilt. And they weigh less. Both important for a track car.

For a street driven car, I'd probably argue the 6-speed is more reliable since these boxes never get the 5th gear lean and such problems.

I did a lot of coding to the E92. I thought my ZHP had a lot of awesome options to enable - the E92 has even crazier stuff.

    • Flashed my DME to the BMW Performance Power Kit (v57 Daten files have it! For MEVD17 N55 E9Xs, use zusb 8666678 and follow these directions)
    • Mirrors fold on lock with comfort access
    • Velocity display on OBC
    • Brake lights flash at 5hz when ABS is activated
    • Removed iDrive disclaimer
    • Enabled weather band on radio
    • Removed driver seat belt chime
    • Disabled key fob opening all windows
    • Enabled key fob closing all windows
    • Soft-on for welcome home lighting with license plate lights
    • Fogs on with high beams
    • Fogs on with flash to pass
    • Double blink hazard lights
    • Changed CBS maintenance display to show only mileage, not dates, for brake pad wear estimation
    • Attempted to turn on spark plug CBS and tried to set oil/brakes to a percentage instead of mileage, but all aren't fully supported and will show blank values
    • Wipers that are mid-wipe when the engine is turned off will finish wiping and park at the bottom of the windshield off (wtf, bmw, you must've had a bored programmer to think of something as obscure, but useful, as that)

I got the same fuel economy out of my 5-speed 2003 330Ci on the highway as I do in my current 6-speed. Only difference is the cruising RPM but it really wasn't noticeable from an audible standpoint.
