I'm not sure how my commute to work has taken over my original question.. This has nothing to do with my commute, I love cars, the cars I'm asking about will be used in my commute but more importantly they will be used when I go out, used for driving around just for the fun of it, making getting places and doing errands more fun. The next car or cars will be taken to the autocross, taken to open track days. They will be modified and worked on. They will be obessed over by me. Pictures taken everywhere and posted to Instagram. I want cars I can ENJOY!!! I LOVE CARS.. My commute has nothing to do with the question.
Agreed, commute mode is personal preference and we are drifting off topic.
That said, it's a pretty open ended right now for choice. $30k budget, got it, but drifting between a S2000 and a 335i are wildly different vehicles. 2 vs. 4 seats, high strung vs. torque monster, agile vs. GT, hard to advise on opposite ends of spectrum. I love the S2000, but you should try one, having a short commute in something you have to rev the piss out of to get it going might get tiresome. Particularly since you'll never have it warmed up. Kind of the same with the M3, the fun attributes of the car would be lost on a short commute.
The 335i is probably your best bet (or a 135i?). Great torque, plenty fast, and can be tuned much faster. By the same token a used CTS-V also would be a blast.
