The BMW tech I talked to said worn CABs are the primary suspect for feathering on the inside edge. My 325i had bad CABs (not horrible, just worn) and my tires were feathered and had terrible tire noise.

My ZHP has bad CABs (again, not terrible at 50k miles) and my tires are already starting to feather and I'm getting the woo woo woo road noise.

Mind you my car feels tight-- no wondering or tramlining problems. The only way I knew the CABs were going was the felt/heard, "pop" when you stab the brake at low speed and the BMW tech telling me about the feathering (which wasn't bad enough for me to notice yet).

The tech said replacing my CABs will stop the premature feathering, but I'm obviously stuck with the noise until I get new tires.

I'm definitely not going to "live with it". Once I get back, I'm getting my exhaust in and after that will get two new front tires. My tires are wearing very well so far; over 17k miles that I know of on this set and so far looks almost new from a tread perspective not counting the "worn" section due to the CABs. That includes a couple of autocrosses and a track day.

Perhaps my driving style is just that good...

That would mean that the wear levels if I bought two new fronts would still be similar to the rears by the time they need replacing, which would greatly please my OCD.

    star spec tire difference?

If you run Star Specs like me you're very happy with 15k miles.
I blew through my first set of Michelin Pilot Sport rears in about 9800 miles. Oops! No burn outs or anything, but they do have the star on the sidewall. I assume this is the "star spec" you speak of. I thought I read in the manual that the star was recommended by BMW.

What is the difference in the star spec? I assume that the HORRIBLE treadwear is a trade-off for performance.

That "horrible" treadwear is a HUGE trade-off in performance!!!
Star Spec's are made by Dunlop (aka Dunlop Direzza Z1); not to be confused with the star on the sidewall of OEM BMW tires.

I didn't mind the oe re040s. Soon I'll have experience with conti extreme dw, which is not the dwS. The dwS is an all season and will get much better wear than the "summer" tires that are recommended for our cars. Tire width, height, etc really have nothing to do with tire wear. It's mostly about the wear rating. If you buy a 220 rated tire, don't expect much longevity. But it will grip!

I ran Good Year F1 Gs-D2's, staggered (225/40/18 - 255/35/18) for 52k miles. The rears were pretty much done, BUT the fronts still looked good except for some bad feathering on the inside due to bad CAB's. I just put another set of F1 Gs-D3 (hard to find) staggered hoping to get another 50k. They were excellent tires on dry BUT were outstanding on wet roads.

I just bought some more Falken Fk452 tires. I like how they perform on the car. They were great in wet and dry. Tire rating is 300, which means they should last for some time.

The previous owner bought the Falkens before I bought the car. Good choice. I like them.

    Good info, Boss.

I am starting to research tires now.

Not sure how much more I'll get out of the Potenzas.
