Hmm... Come to think of it, I remember wondering where the click was... I'll have to get the PN off the box.
What's the issue/advantage of one over the other

The design changed on how the ignition grips the tip of the spark-plug. Don't think there is any advantage to the design change
I ended up ordering 6 new ignition coils from FCP Euro made by Eldor. FCPeuro says they do not fit our cars for some reason though

I saw that in the pic you posted. What's the advantage or disadvantage of one design over the other?

The part number referenced in that pic does not appear to apply to the 3 series, according to RealOEM. That may be why FCP says it won't fit. Judging by the vehicles on the compatible list, it seems the M54 may not be compatible?

Reinstalled my front subframe brace. Overcame my cheapskate ways and used new screws as recommended. Torqued per specification--43.5 lb-ft + 90 degree turn + 30 degree turn, and that made me realize I wouldn't want to re-use the old screws after what felt like a crazy amount of plastic deformation--in fact, I'm amazed steel can stretch so much without snapping. Of course, once plastically deformed, it's much more likely they will snap if subjected to subsequent forces--as many people have found out.
