235/45/17 or 245/40/17??
235/45/17 or 245/40/17??
245mm tire will fit in the front.
245mm = 9.645 inches
45 series and below, the rim width is 85% of the section width.
245mm * 85 % = 208.5mm = 8.19882 ~ 8 inches.
It's basically the borderline as wide as you can go. Depending on the section widthh of the particular tire you are buying, it may or may not be optimal. Not all manufacturers have the same section width even though its a 245mm tire. Check the specs if you are concern about it.
Good info Derek, thanks!

Thanks Derbo! I'll go 245/40 if I stick with the 17x8's
Bumpin this up again. Would handling be really that bad with 255/40 on a 17x8? I know my rims are a 1/2" undersize, but $99 for Hankook Ventus V12 EVOs in 255/40-17 from TireRack is looking very attractive! I like the more meaty tire look. I don't track the car, just some spirited drives in the mountains every now & then. I see so many different opinions. There's a lot of Mustangs, STIs, & EVOs running 255/40 on the stock 17x8s with no issues. Any more opinions on this?
Bump for a good deal on tires only $96 from Tirerack
