I don't like using spacers just because they're a bitch to take off after the winter is over. Unfortunately they are necessary for my winter wheels to clear. Otherwise, functionally I never expect a problem from them.
    Put nickel grease inbetween?

My guess is they screwed something up, whatever it was. That should not happen is everything was properly executed for the right application.

I ran 1.5" Spidertrax spacers on my Jeep for close to 4 years of daily driving, weekend wheeling, 400 mile road trips on highways. Never had any issues what-so-ever.
I went with spacers because I liked the look of the stock wheels, and there was no way to run tires bigger that 33x10.5 on the stockers without rubbing the frame rails at full turn lock.
I ran the stock wheels with spacers and 35x12.50 mud terrains for years. Properly installed and torqued, multiple tire rotations. No problems.
When I switched to the double beadlock wheels, I had them re-centered to give enough backspacing to avoid rubbing while running 37x12.50's.

I would have no problem switching back to spacers if I decide to throw the stock wheels back on the Heep. Buy good quality spacers, do your due diligence in regards to torque specs, and they should provide years of trouble free service. My .02.

I applied anti-seize VERY liberally to the entire mounting surface of both the rotor and the spacer (both sides of the spacer). Still gets seized.
