I will be rebuilding a set of Kinesis K28's that were on my E36. The E36 sat out in the SoCal sun for eight years. You can imagine the condition of not only the car but the wheels as well. Here's a photo of one of them. On the right side of the wheel, you can see the tire cracks. This is where the tires sat flat for eight years!

Today, I had all four tires removed to begin my journey of restoration.

    Rear #1

    Rear #2

    Front #1

    Front #2

Various photos of the condition of the wheels. Note, missing rivet was removed by me for inspection.

    Surface rust on rivets

Found that one of the inner barrels were previously repaired. Looks to have been a crack of some sort that was welded shut. I'm unsure about this welded barrel.

18 x 8 in the front. Unsure of the offsets. Need to figure out how to calculate that.

18 x 9.5 in the rear. Unsure of offsets.

These wheels are very light. Front weighs in at 20.4 lbs

    Rears at 21.2 lbs

My intent is to restore these and move them over to my ZHP. Hopefully I can do this on a budget but I won't hold my breath. My current 225/40/18 and 255/35/18 Pilots should fit perfectly on these thus saving me the cost of new tires.

I plan on removing all of the rivets and inspecting them and reusing them if they seem OK. Only, I'll need to get them sand blasted or chemically dipped/cleaned then chromed, anodized, powdercoated, or polished. I think anodizing will cost way too much to do.

The faces, I plan on getting stripped and possibly powdercoated a grey color. Not sure about this yet. I love the look of these K28's that I found on the web. Thoughts?

There also seems that there might be a very small bend on one of the outter lips of the fronts. I thought I saw this in the past but can't seem to find this bend now. Does anyone know if I have to leave the barrels assembled to get them trued? I would think I'd have to leave the assembled so that they could be spun on a machine to check for run-out.

After getting this checked, I'll take them apart and hopefully get them made up purdy again.

Stay tuned! Feedback is always welcome!
