Kpro's F87 M2 Journey

My wife Kristen (Kpro) has decided to sell the 135 while it still has low mileage and in perfect shape... What could she buy to one up a fully modded 135? an M2 of course! I fought her a bit on buying a new car because they depreciate so quick but It's her money and her car AND a happy wife is a happy life, right?

She custom ordered it as these cars are so popular they're basically order only right now. She wanted minimal configuration so no sunroof and only option is Apple iPlay and the standard 3 pedals. The car comes pretty much optioned out. The only feature option is the executive package and the only thing I'd want from that would be the adaptive LED headlights. I really like the wheels that come on this car especially with the color she chose. As far as mods, it doesn't really need a whole lot. Her short list for the exterior is a CF rear diffuser ( which already showed up in the mail) CF mirror shells, CF rear spoiler and CF splitters... basically the same exterior mods she has on the 135. The only thing on the engine/drive train mod list for now is a new charge pipe and blow off valve as the OEM one has some issues.

She originally wanted another Alpine White but I talked her into Long Beach Blue. It was an extra $500 but it's a stunning color. Since she works for Rick Hendrick BMW, she gets a massive $6500 discount plus a reduced delivery fee.

She took the performance center delivery which we're very excited about. The center is only a few hours away so that will be a fun trip! Production started on 3/21/18. She can follow the production through the dealer software...Looks like it will be finished on 4/20/18 She is very excited! Hopefully, my ZHP will be back on the road by then so we can drive that out there.

Her car is coming from Germany but you can pick it up at the performance center where they have a special spot where your car is on display, you get to take some cars around their track and other pampering. It's a $2500 option but she is getting it for free for some reason... maybe cause she's buying an M?

Yea! Wifey got a DCT due to high traffic to work. She would've loved to get a stick but would've killed herself in that traffic every day. So far we only messed with coding. I've used E-SYS to do coding and borrowed my friend's BimmerCode app + BT OBD adapter to mess around with it too.

What are your thoughts on the M2 Competition? Realistically, I think the N55 is a better engine for daily. Everything else seems "fixable" on the current F87.

I know you’re asking Rob, but insomnia + Tapatalk = I’ll chime in!

I’m not sure how much I like it. I agree the N55 is a better DD engine, and frankly I don’t know if 405hp is something I’d actually want. Ive always felt that 350 range is ideal for my skills as a driver (factoring in projected personal growth on the track), as well as just not senselessly blowing through consumables in daily driving. I like that it added the ///M wing mirrors and BMW’s finally giving it an improved interior over the normal 2er, but I don’t like the Competition’s new kidney shape nor how the grilles are connected in the center—yes I know BMW kidney grilles of early years were connected, but they already tried bringing back the roundel beside the Hofmeister kink on the new X2 and that looks terrible also, so maybe not every design needs to be brought back to life. I wish the production run were a little more limited to make it feel a little more special, but with the way BMW is slapping ///M labels on everything these days, I don’t foresee that happening.

Yea John, it's bittersweet the 135 had been with us a long time. Hopefully it will be as good to Rob as it was to us. Kristen replaced a lot of stuff as preventative maintenance while she had a warranty and new everyone at the BMW dealership back in NJ... all of the problem issues were addressed including new turbos, walnut blasting, injectors, water pump gaskets etc etc..

Ok enough of the nostalgia... we're getting an F'n M2!
I just looked up the competition package- which will be the only model available once it launches... That's how it should of come out of the factory in the first place. I think BMW is realizing that the M2 is the biggest seller in the M car lineup but I'm not bummed we didn't wait for that.... there is lots you can do for mods with the M2 as it sits now... HP is no problem, the 135 is a prime example... it's last dyno was 405 at the rear wheels which puts it at around 460 hp at the crank. The stock HP was 300. I don't think having a lot of HP is a bad thing as long as it's manageable but that can be hard to do with a turbo. The 135 is scary fast because when it hits, it hits hard and if you're not ready for it, it will scare the shit out of you. On the other hand, if you drive it like a normal person, it drives just like any other car...and gets really good gas mileage. That's the beauty of boost
Because the M2 has a standard production motor, parts should be much cheaper as well. Suspension and exhaust can all be modded if we want too but why bother? It's a brand new friggin M car! A few tweaks here and there to make it our own and I'll be happy.
Of course Kristen won't be happy until it has as much HP as the 135 and scrapes the ground... She's already got a wish list as long as my arm!

I never thought about that. I guess in a way its kind of like a ZHP. Standard drivetrain (albeit this one massaged by M) improved to be a better drivers car than the already great driver its based on. I've said it a million times so far and i'll continue to say it over and over- the M2 is the one and only car in their current line up that i'd ever want. Even more, I'm dying for them to release a sedan version.

I read an article last night that said even though the competition was just released, bmw is not stopping their. A CSL version is still slated for 2021. I believe that would end up wit the M3/4's motor. Ooooooooo sign me up.....

Absolutely this. Everything else I think is way too big. If I wanted something the size of an F30 I’d buy an E39. If I was spending M3/M4 money I’d go Porsche instead. I love BMWs, but with the exception of the M2, BMW lost me after the E-Chassis.

This is the same girl that ripped a turbo from a junkyard Volvo and mounted it in her Prelude... 325 hp to the front wheels or should say wheel lol, she tracked that car for years and she's still got it at a friend's house in Fla. We might go get it so she can use it as DD until the M2 arrives

One thing Rob, the N55 in the F87 is pretty good from the factory. The oil system is from the S55 and with a baffled oil pan. It also has S55 pistons/bearings. With a minor tune, you can easily reach the 135i power levels easily! Thats funny cause I think the 414hp in my M3 already feels somewhat timid. It probably has to do with the way the S65 delivers the power (4K+) vs the power of the turbos mid-range N55s.

For suspension, I think we will eventually go with the M performance suspension which appears to be made by KW. Right now the car is already very stiff for street (stiffer than my E90M!). Car will be fun!! :D


My thoughts on the new M2 Comp:
1. I like the new seats but not the color scheme. It also looks like it is optional and will still offer the std seats. Wonder how much that will cost!
2. The grilles look odd so close.
3. The extra 3 holes on the bottom looks like it will gather more rocks/flies that the standard F87 bumper already does. I've noticed rocks in the side slits to the coolers and just stuck there.
4. It also looks like the bigger 400mm brakes are optionals as well.
5. M2 Comp will most likely cost significantly more and dealerships here will charge a lot!
6. Competition has M1/M2 modes and the various normal buttons for steering/power where the M2 doesn't have that. :(
7. It looks like there will be revised cooling sytems (oil, transmission, engine) due to the new engine.
8. The CF U-Brace better damn fit the standard F87!! :P

In other news, I drove a 6MT M2 yesterday evening. Loved it. Felt right at home compared to the ZHP, but more power and refinement. I LOVE the auto-rev matched downshifts in Sport+. Some folks dislike that, but for someone who isn't very good at heel toe or timing blips the damn computer can do it perfectly everytime and makes me feel like I'm Senna.

Now all that said...the car I drove AFTER the M2...left me feeling a little more giddy...and I had to change my pants immediately after revving it out. And by revving it out I mean, barely even making it halfway up the range.

Hahaha! We usually check when we get home from work at night. It's hard not to check all the time because it's so damn easy. Checking BMW's internal system is harder because you have to login and go about 5 pages deep to check status.

I've seen a couple of M2's in the last few days now that the weather is better and people are driving the 'nice' car to work.

I'm really liking the way they look/ sound. In some ways they're better than the M3/M4. I think you are (Kpro is) going to be really happy with this purchase. The M2 is definitely on my radar as a candidate for a future used car purchase, that is, if they don't go the way of the 1M.

Looks like the boat is going to Brunswick then will swing back to Charleston for the last stop. That way when they offload in Charleston, the boat will be empty to load all the cars coming by train from Spartanburg, for the return trip to Europe. Kristen's car will make the train ride back to Spartanburg for the performance center delivery... that's my best guess.

I've been away awhile with a project, and thought I'd check to see if the new car had arrived. Very cool tracking, and congrats on the deep discount.

Thanks! The car is at the warehouse at the Performance center. Not much to report after the boat arrived and it took it's train ride to Spartanburg.
The performance center delivery includes a hotel room the night before so we're going to try and get out of work early to take advantage of that. I though it would be cool to take the ZHP up there but they pick you up at the hotel via shuttle so no ZHP at the performance center but it should be a fun ride home!

We pick it up next Wednesday!

She say she accidentally went over the 5.5k RPM limit once. The break in is not over 5.5k or 106 MPH
Ray, I took that pic with you in mind haha. Kristen lol'd when she read that.

We're about 1/2 way back. We stopped at the BMWCCA headquarters and took a tour of their 2002 display and the Zentrum before heading back.
I'll post more about the day when we get home!

CF mirror covers. These are like the ones that come on the M3 & M4. They have the little wings on the inside part. I'm still deciding if I like them but it's her car, I'm just the tech lol. Actually, she had passenger mirror shell off and the new one on before me... Ha! Funny how motivated she is when it's her car!

I'll get a shot of the whole car with the new shells later. It looks much better than just a single shot of the door
