Hahahah yeah my car does sorta smell like crayons a little. Really only the trunk smells like crayons. The interior has a distinct, somewhat pleasant smell. I think the leather interiors smell more like crayons.

The G.A.S kit is sweet! Quality parts and easy to install. My car runs perfect now. Hit me up if you have any questions on the install.

Bayerische-Motoren-Werke

The GAS kit came in on Monday and while removing the DISA I found I had rips in both upper and lower intake boots ARGH. Anyways I ordered new boots from ECS on Tuesday and they arrived Wednesday. Put everything back together last night...the only tricky part was getting the lower boot snug to the manifold with those damn clamps. Also cleaned out the ICV while I was in there.
My DISA is about 3 years old so everything worked and the housing itself was in good shape, but I was blown away with the quality of the machined parts in the GAS kit. This is how BMW should have built these units in the first place. The infamous 4k rpm stumble is now significantly reduced, idle is improved and she just runs smoother overall. I would recommend this kit to anyone strictly for the peace of mind.

No codes? I would be interested to know if...

1. You have any stored codes, and

2. If your SES light works.

Curious myself as well. I haven't had it plugged in at my indy shop in over a year now, but had the SES light come on briefly after I did my vanos seals so I know the light works. I didn't notice any loss of power or idle issues from the torn boots but I had been hearing a slight whistle sound recently. My ICV was actually pretty clean when I took it out. All seems well now!

Hit a freaking bunny on my way back home after my side job of cutting grass after my first job today. So freaking pissed. He shoved my foglight right though my bumper and broke it in two & broke the tabs off the fog itself too. I guess I'll be running one of my old ones until I can source a new one.

They were almost brand new too. Well, 4 months is still considered 'new' in terms of cars that are ~8yrs old right?

Let me know how they hold up.

I have HP+ pads sitting in my garage and throwing them on the car w/super blue fluid as my new DD pads (as well at auto-x and track). I could care less about the noise, that's why I'm just going to leave them on

Like this? This is how my trim is normally but I have the bimmian mount under it.

I can push it in a tiny but and the gap closes but as soon as I take pressure off, it goes back to the above picture.

There is some adjustment available in the mounting pins. They can slide from side to side a bit in their mounts on the back of the trim piece. That should be enough to get yours to line up.

Haha admittedly mine bugged me on the ZHP. It was pretty easy to push back in though.

The less then perfect fitment above my radio tempts me to get rid of my carbon fiber trim in the M3 sometimes. Not sure what I'd replace it with though... Piano black maybe? It's surprisingly cheap

Well, I updated my nav to V32 last night, much thanks to johnrando for the disc loan... But, its still confused/backwards, so today I swung by my local dealer to get it figured out. No such luck in a few minutes of poking around by the service manager, so I set an appointment for updates and a diagnostic on Monday. Will be interesting to see what sort of other changes the car takes on.

It's still there when you're at high RPM. But I agree with that. The OEM X-Pipe does help

Is the mz4 xpipe resonated? I want to reduce my rasp, and was thinking of getting the super sprint resonated xpipe... But it's expensive. Or if I could tweak the rasp so that it sounds more like that typical v12 rasp, I'd do that. Ryan- Congrats on the wedding man, I know that last month can be insanely hectic. I will say this. The best advice I got right before my own wedding. At a few times throughout the night, stop, take a moment and just 'take it all in'. You spend months (or years) planning, and the night goes by SO fast. So just take a few minutes and enjoy the night. Don't get too wrapped up in the details. Its your night! Oh, and congrats again... /end homo :biggrin

Digressing for Ryan's benefit, best advise I got prior to marriage was from an older family friend. So since I'm now old, passing along his sage advice -- he said just remember to be UP! SHUT UP as your wife and her mother plan THEIR wedding, they'll ask your opinion on things but they're not really paying attention to your answer as you're just a required prop for THEIR event. SHOW UP on your wedding day, preferrably sober but showing UP for the event is most important. And afterwards, PAY UP cause you'll exceed the best planned budget.

Congrats and enjoy.

UdubBadger

^fwiw I planned my entire wedding by myself without my wife's help (for most of it anyway). I'd do all the leg work and then give her a peek at what I planned and if she didn't like it shed say so. She liked most of it though. She was too busy working 70 hr weeks to do most of it.

Prices fluctuate, but should be in that range. ECS is selling a brand new set for around $500's!

God damned.. How much is it for a new one?

Meric,

iirc, I paid close to $90 for that exact piece. I replaced every trim piece in my ZHP with brand new fresh silver cube because it was just something that was nagging on me...

When I initially priced these trim pieces, they were somewhere in the range of the lower $80's. By the time I got around to getting the new door trims, the pricing creeped up into the $90's so I went ahead and ordered the remaining door trim pieces before they ended up in the $100 price range.....they were already expensive enough....

If you are going to get individual pieces, and you want new, then it is best to get them from the dealership. If you intend to replace the whole set and want to save some cash then, as BP suggested, ECS Tuning has a set in the $500 range which is cheaper than getting the whole set from the dealership.....:)

Whoever did that to your trim piece, I would show them the receipt for the new one and make a point about being respectful of other people's car....but that's just me....if they can't respect your car then they don't need to ride with you....that's just my two cents worth....I have an acquaintence here at work who was like that. Didn't show respect whenever he got a ride in my ZHP.....he no longer rides in it. First time I figured he was not aware of what I expected so I explained to him what was expected (pre-flight briefing)....second time - game over...

Nice! Could you explain what the difference is in look or ride quality with and without the helper springs? IIRC people take them out to go lower? I know very little about any coilovers besides TCKs. :rofl

BimmerWill
07-02-2012, 07:09 AM
The only problem i see with removing the helper springs is not having enough clearance between fender and tire/wheel depending on your set up. That and you might not have enough clearance from the ground in order to make it over slight bumps in the road. As far as ride quality I don't believe it would affect it too much considering the springs are compressed completely as soon as any weight is put on them but it might be needed to ensure the main coil stays seated properly when going over sudden bumps. Just my thoughts I could be completely wrong though.

Love your sig quote btw ;) good thing to live by

danewilson77
07-02-2012, 07:39 AM
Clearance was great. The only difference is you are changing the overall springrate of the setup.

With helper spring, my coilovers is adjusted at its lowest setting. Without the helper, my coilovers was adjusted about mid position.

That actually what will determine clearance and ride height.

Udub- I will definitely come help drink beer, I mean, uh... Do Vanos...

+1. And EAT. You're so busy having fun and socializing that you can forget to sit down and eat something, lol.

Oh, should stay on topic, bought a tonneau cover for my car for when the top is down. Figure to have a little interior protection when the top is down, but yet save wear/tear on the top always opening/closing.

Hmm, is this one of those things that covers the other 3 seats or something that covers the top when it is down? I'm not too up to speed on verts, but definitely post some pics. Would be interesting to see. my brother has an S2000 and the top looks pretty crap when its down and folded. No engineering into making it fold down and out of sight...

As for me, the car is at the local dealer today getting a diagnostic done. Trying to figure out why the Nav is 'backwards' and they're also doing a PPI of sorts to let me know what the car needs. Speaking of, I'm a little miffed at the dealer.

When I came in a couple days ago to discuss and schedule the appointment, the service guy I spoke with said no biggie, they'd get me a courtesy car, etc etc. Well, this is the same dealer we bought our 2012 X3 at... Of course, when they scheduled me, they apparently weren't paying attention and scheduled the X3 to come in. I arrive in the ZHP, and see a nice red X3 courtesy waiting. I assume its my vehicle. I get in the office, sit down, go through everything, sign all the papers etc... Then I go to the guy with the courtesy cars, and he sets me up with a newer Altima (ironic because I just sold my Altima of almost the same color... but these newer ones are soooo garbage!)... Well, apparently, they tell me there are no courtesy cars available, even though the X3 is sitting there still when I leave (nobody else in service dept.). So, I take the Altima, whatever...

What are your experiences when you go for service? It was clear that they 'changed their mind' when I brought in a lowly E46... I was a little perturbed that they didn't even admit and just say that "hey, we give you equivalent to what you bring in, sorry, you're not taking the X3"... That would've been better than trying to cover up and BS me about not having courtesy cars...

I'm tempted to say something about it when I get back... If that X3 is still sitting there, I most likely will... Or am I being snooty? :biggrin

Yes that is, but this is one that covers all 4 seats... just a substitute for putting the top up. My Triumph has one that covers the others seats and you can drive with it on. I'll post a pic, it's nothing fancy. BMW did do a GREAT job of making the top disappear when it's down.

AFA the loaner, probably a little snooty. I know my local dealer will give you whatever they have, it's rarely a like-for-like. You can request one when you make your appt, but if it hasn't been arranged fully ahead of time, they can run out of loaners or things happen. Even after that, it's kind of first come, first served. I've had them apologize and say, "all we have are manual mini-cooper S's, is that OK?" To which I respond, "hell yeah!". :biggrin

Loaners... when I was under 21, they told me that their insurance doesn't allow them to give it to anyone under 21. Now that I'm 21, they're saying that you have to be 25

I got them to give me one anyway (I'm on good terms with my SA, and I think he felt bad because what should've been a couple hours and $150 ended up being the entire long weekend and about $700...), but yeah, I don't know what'll happen next time (I do generally avoid going to the dealership for anything that doesn't require specialized tools)

John- I guess I should've clarified... It wasn't so much that they gave me something other than a BMW, I'm not that type... I guess it was that I was BS'ed and told they didn't have anything else, when the X3 was sitting there waiting for me. And like I said, they thought we were bringing the X3 in... Clearly they do a like swap, but when they didn't see me bringing in the X3, they changed their mind. I just didn't appreciate the line of bull...

Anyway its all good. I just got a call about the car and the things it needs. As for the Nav, looks like the antenna shorted somewhere as they found it bare of all insulation... They quoted me $900 for the antenna... I'll be scouring eBay and online... :shifty They also noted the aftermarket FCABs, said it might need a DISA (some rattle at idle) and that the front brakes and tires were both coming due for replacement.

Classic symptoms of either Vanos issues, DISA, possible leaky intake boot(s), or some combination of all 3. It was a fantastic day. Lime Rock is not a braking-intensive track, but the pads held up just fine despite the very hot ambient temperatures (around 90 most of the day).

The pads did great at Watkins Glen as well, a much more braking intensive course. I didn't experience any brake fade there, either.

They are the shiznit! Benefits: weigh almost 7 lbs due to very heavy rubber nibbed backing, and without anchors of any kind, do NOT move at ALL. They are super-easy to clean and rarely show dirt anyways. Just pull out and shake. Done. Lastly, the quality is superb and they look fantastic. I've had them in 4 cars now, wouldn't own a car without ordering a set. Pics do them no justice. See available colors and patters (there are many) at cocomats.com.

I see your point, but there is no need (and no space) to add any bigger spacers.

I am running 5mm all around because:

1: I rub in the rear (inside fender wall) with my track tires. My OEM tires are 10.2" wide, my track tires at 10.6" wide (with a square shoulder).

2: I added a lot of camber in the front (went from around -1.5 to -2.3). This camber can cause rub on my inner strut...this will make sure I don't rub.

If I add any bigger spacers in the rear, I'll rub on the outside fender wall.

So more potential issues again... This is a never ending battle.

So I had a stripped brake line after pulling the calipers off this past time. Got some new SS ones and swapped out the fronts. Also changed out the brake wear sensors.

The front lines didn't screw in as much as I thought they would but they are tight and I bled everything without issues.

So I get in today and pull the car out and the red "brake" and the DSC lights both go on.

What's the deal here? Is that from the sensors or is something else wrong?

It looks like the leak is coming from the screw, though. You can see the lines of coolant coming from the screw and pooling on the top of the expansion tank.

Unless you meant something else?

My car is at 53k miles and is running like crap from just under 3k on up, if you goose it. Gradual acceleration is fine. Classic symptoms of either Vanos issues, DISA, possible leaky intake boot(s), or some combination of all 3.

When you say "from just under 3k on up" do you mean all the way to redline or does it clear up just after 3k? If so you may just need a software update to the latest version. Pretty common issue, especially on ZHPs.

Mine had a miss from about 2800 to 3000 in the higher gears and after trying spark plugs, fuel and air filters and Vanos rebuild without any change I had the software updated at an indy shop and that cured it completely. I also had a new Disa that the dealer installed the day I bought my car.

A bird took a dump on my car, and the heat from this massive heatwave literally infused the shit into my headlight. No amount of PlastX or washing was getting it out. I had to buck up $25 for another 3M restoration kit and sand down the headlight really good. Unfortunately, due to the nature of how weirdly shaped our lights are, it didn't go without casualties :(

Even though I taped it up really well, I nicked my lower headlight trim really good in a few places. No bueno :(. Currently looking for a new one in Silvergrey-metallic, but worst-case I repaint it or get some touchup paint.

Seal your headlights with a good sealant!! Wax, headlight sealant, whatever - just do it! It's a lot easier than restoring them (again).

If anything, after restoring the headlight lens, you should go to nextlevelride.com and get yourself a headlight lens film. It will prevent things like this from ever happening and will also protect the surface of the lens. It is well worth the small investment to avoid problems like this...

Just something to think about, but in my last car, I had the headlight haze removed (perfectly) and then clear coated. Once that was done, no problems with hazing. Also, every time I wax the car, I go over the headlights and taillights every time.

The clear coat could probably be skipped if the extra $$ isn't there, but waxing the lights is an easy way to keep them beautifully crystal. :)

That sounds like it could be something else then. Usually it is just a couple hundred rpm band starting right before 3000 where the miss is.

Not sure about all ZHPs being affected but most I have seen were 2004 model year. I do remember though recently seeing someone somewhere mentioning having the update work on his 2005.

Sounds like you have a good strategy for finding the issue though while taking care of some PM at the same time. If none of that cures it I'd consider getting the update done. Are you getting any codes? Any hidden codes? Mine would occasionally have a hidden 2974 Peake code. Never did, and still haven't, had a CEL on my ZHP.

I wouldn't go darker than legal. Reason being is that you may get "that one" officer that will hound you and make you strip it off... it does look sick with 20% tint though :shifty

I replaced my right side lower rear window trim yesterday. The old one had rotting rubber on the last couple inches of the back end. Wasn't as hard as I was expecting. Worst part was getting the old one off and removing all (most) of the old glue. That was after letting it sit out in the sun for an hour. I was worried about being able to get the new one lined up right but it butts up against the inner trim so it was no problem. I also laid down a couple layers of blue painters tape along the outer edge of the old one to protect the paint and also to help line up the new one. Then I just barely started removing the cover of the 2 sided tape and wet that down a bit with some window cleaner so I could get it positioned and then pulled the tape covering from underneath the trim piece as I went along toward the front.

EDIT: I forgot to mention you have to unhook the window actuator from the glass so you can move the window in and out to get at the glue better when removing the old stuff. I used a folded up towel to prop it out a ways when I needed it out of the way.

I wish I had taken some pics while doing it so I could have made a DIY but it's really pretty simple to do. If anyone has any questions just ask or PM me and hopefully I will see them......still having problems with not getting e mail notifications of posts/PMs.

Do you have a part number for those strips? I may do this as well more for preventive measures. Mine is beginning to look slightly worn on the ///M. Looks awesome! :thumbsup

On another note, BP was successful in reprogramming my used LCM to Wobbie this afternoon. He also programmed in the one touch triple blink and made a short video on this to show me. Everything worked and there was no tamper dot...:) Can't wait till he comes by so that I can have my LCM recoded to my ZHP with this feature....going to do this with my MBA....should be fun :thumbsup

and some high heat paint on the exhaust tip. I had a good amount of surface rust so I decided to go with a black tip. Hopefully it won't chip off....

Hand washed the car for the first time...twice! Working to get some of the paintwork back to its original shine and depth.

Also, just putting out a detailing APB for those on the east coast. Willing to drive and will pay for supplies/labor. The car is in desperate need.

I bought the 51367891912 Glanzschwarz which is the Shadowline gloss black for the ZHPs. Is the black on the M3 the Schwarz maybe?

This is what my old one looked like....

On the ///M it's just a rubber strip like the rest of the lower door window trim. At least with this trim I don't burn my arms when I hang them out. It's just warm rubber...:) In the pic it looked to me like it was rubber....

Thanks again for the part numbers.....I will have to confirm with my parts peeps at the dealership :)

Today I figured out how to code Wobbie's rear running lights to run as DRL's along with my city lights. So now, I have city lights in the front as DRL's and rear running lights on as well, without having to touch my light switch. If I was to put my AE's back in, I'd have a full LED DRL setup.

Now I just have to decide between a single light on in the back as a DRL, like this:

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/az3579/Automotive/BMW%20E46%20330i%20ZHP/Exterior/d2fb8af7.jpg

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/az3579/Automotive/BMW%20E46%20330i%20ZHP/Exterior/3d491213.jpg

Or if I want to set the full bottom row as running lights:

http://i200.photobucket.com/albums/aa192/az3579/Automotive/BMW%20E46%20330i%20ZHP/Exterior/addaba3f.jpg

I'm leaning towards the full bottom row, though the single lights have some character to them that nobody else seems to have... hmm. Decisions, decisions...

Great work BP. Like the bottom too. Ryan, what is a "drive in Mexico". BTW, got this to save wear and tear on the top. Protects it from birds and dust in the air when I'm parked at the beach (which is usually minimum 2 days a week).

@John: Driving in Mexico usually means driving pedal to the metal, disregard for speed limits and pushing your car to the limits. When I used this term, I meant obeying all speed limits to the .5mph, never reaching pedal to metal and that my car never once felt any g's. :biggrin And I like your new top cover!

PM sent.

It was $490 total. That includes the belts, the optional Trans Thermo, and shipping.

The dealer had quoted me $240 to replace just the belts. For a little more I can do so much more by myself.

Well, I'm sad to admit that I've been leaving both the ZHP and the X3 outside for the past few days. Both of them are dirty and just being left alone... Why you ask?

Well, I'm completely renovating my garage. Full disassembly of the workbench, remove all goods and storage, paint the entire thing, put up 6 new fluorescent light fixtures, epoxy coat the floor (the fancy kind with the colored sprinkles), relocate the ceiling fan, run electrical and cable for the wall mounted flat screen, and then install new pulls on all of the built in cabinets...

It'll take me a week or two, but I'm excited for the result. Giving my baby a new home! :biggrin

Where the ignitor is located. You literally take the entire headlight apart.

found a long vertical scratch along the driver side body today. PISSED. i have no idea how it happened, but it's new. hopefully the quixx i got will help get rid of it.

also, we've been getting rain and i just wanted to get some bird shit off my car so i took it thru a touchless quik wash. damn thing left a bunch of "clear coat" residue or whatever all over the car. shit...i got the cheapest wash, i really just wanted a rinse and dry. f'ing A. i hadn't done a drive thru wash in months...now i remember why.

only positive was i did get my new Gold DISA in the mail. looks sweet, can't wait to get it in.

The Quixx is the Shuixx! Worked great!

DISA update after install.
