Thought a bent lower control arm was somewhat common. I had one on my car, and it's often a symptom of someone tying the car down by them, and they are pretty soft. A bad rear trailing arm would be uncommon.

Either way, if it's the lower control arm a quick inspection to see if it's 'straight' will tell you. Also, a lot of positive camber would be another indication as it connects to the bottom of the hub and if it bends would pull the bottom of the tire inward. This is info for the 330, and I assume the setup in the rear on the m is similar

Cool sounds like they're good then. Ordered my bushings already. Went with Meyle HD and Turner shims.

Hopefully this camber plate situation is fixed soon and is a permanent one for the alignment issues. I'd really love to move on from all of this.

Car still at Firestone. Camber plates still need to be flipped.

Did they install them backwards?

From a GS3, this was sent.

UdubBadger
06-15-2013, 05:27 PM
Shop in Ohio removed struts to tighten them and installed them 60 degrees counter clockwise off from where they should've been.

Fixed that but it still feels like it might be off a little.

Mechanic is out of town this week so I'm gonna see what happens and might replace a tie rod if its still bad. The next step after that would be ditch the front 18x9 rims and 255s and go back to 18x8 and 225 fronts.

Then he sends me pics of the rally from his office building.

Seth, if you haven't selected your RTABs yet, I did a fair amount of reading on the subject and found the Vorshlag shim set with OEM bushings to be the best combo for daily street use (link (http://www.vorshlag.com/product_info.php?cPath=1_4_26&products_id=59)). I put them on my M3 and there was no noticeable increase increase in NVH (they did completely stop my crazy fast/weird rear tire wear). Plus they install in the stock mount unlike the kit from Turner. The shims keep the bushing from deflecting too much and should prolong the life of the bushing significantly.

If you don't mind the NVH then there are a whole host of Polyurethane bushings that will last approximately forever, but from the posts and videos I found it seemed like it was a quite noticeable change in NVH from the back of the car.

I agree with this one. I had the Vorshlag ones and literally need to undo 4 bolts on the bottom to get them installed. Alignment is a must since those bolts are the alignment bolts but after that, there isn't much else.

The turner ones look sturdier but I don't see it being an issue with the vorshlag since they are snug in there. I had the vorshlags and running the turners now (since its been installed on the rear end i got)

I didn't notice an increase in NVH with my powerflex poly rtabs.

Well I am happy to report the akg RTABs are in, new tie rods are in, a loose control arm bolt has been replaced and tightened up and the car drives VERY firm and straight now. Alignment finally showed proper numbers all around. The only issue is the front left wheel still rubs the smallest amount which could be an issue pertaining to the bumper being misaligned.

Next steps in rehab will likely be:

Fix leaking engine bolt in back of motor
Replace windshield trim
Replace front bumper with euro one (no side markers) and paint
Hood respray
Touch up of other small paint issues

Will also need to secure some winter tires by October.

Good werk Seth. Can you elaborate on this one? :dunno

UdubBadger
07-19-2013, 05:02 AM
Only slightly. Mechanic told me a while back my main seal was going bad, drops of oil found on ground and protective plate under car. I looked into it more on m3f.net and it seams a washer on a bolt in the back of the engine commonly goes bad and leaks a bit. When he had the car this week he visually confirmed it was the leak from the bolt but couldn't get to it to swap with the new bolt without dropping the entire exhaust. He didn't have a lift available so it would have been a big hassle and I wasn't paying him much so I told him to hold off. If things go well at work this month might treat myself to a 3 section exhaust so I will replace the bolt then when it's all off the car and easily accessible.

Attended BIG MEAT 2013 this weekend which is a euro meet/bbq (Kokesh can vouch for the BBQ) put on by a friend in conjunction with some sponsors I am hooked up with. I decided that since it's proceeds were for charity that C Withers Media Chicago (my branch) would also sponsor as well as shoot some stuff that will be sent into Roundel Magazine (apparently located less than a mile from my front door) for possible coverage in one of their upcoming issues.

Here is one of the images I plan on sending in.

Issue is 9" is pushing the width of running 225 wide snow tires. I have a deal with a wheel company in the works to shoot for them so I could end up with a set of 8.5" rims for winter and a staggered set for summer on the house.

Both actually. And again if you stretch too much the sidewall issues can arise, tires more likely to blow out, wear faster and also corner poorly.

Manufacturer said 225 blizzak good for up to 9" rim but obviously 8.5" would be safer.

Items replaced

OEM engine mounts
Rogue trans mounts
OEM front diff mount
flex disc
center driveshaft mount and bearing
UUC clutch arm bushing
Stoptech pads
Stoptech SS lines
UUC clutch line
Super Blue fluid

And FINALLY got to the leaking constant pressure bolt in the back of the engine that's left a small pond of Castrol on my driveway over the last 4 1/2 months.

The car feels so nice, firm and solid over bumps, brakes well, clutch is firm also. Glad I just decided to get it done.

Next is the subframe and maybe som exhaust goodies.

Can comment on the mounts as I don't know what non worn oem ones felt like but these are nice and stiff without noticeable NVH.

The clutch feels a bit tighter than before which is preferred, though it's not a drastic change.

So was getting weird clicking noises from the front brakes lately when coming down from higher speeds (over 40). Finally had some time to get the car up on a Jack and found some pad deposits on both sides.

Tried rebedding them today and noise has subsided (didn't visually inspect) but I'm wondering how this is happening? Rotors are newer and pads are new stop techs as of Oct.

Anyone have any ideas?

Slide pins are fastened and carrier bolts are torqued down?

Bruce replaced his whole suspension because he couldn't find out where a clicking noise was coming from. Only then did he and Dane realize that it was from his brakes and a bolt was not torqued down all the way.

Oh she's finally back.

Some paint work, inspection II with valve adjustment, summer tires and brass caliper bushings has her in tip top shape.

Now for this project...

Great to see some progress :) looking forward to the videos after you finish. That fresh paint on the front end looks delicious. Reminds me that I could use some new grills up front.

Well stage 2 of exhaust is done. I am taking video of it tomorrow to compare to stage 3 when that gets done.

Unfortunately it's more complex that I had thought so might be another week. It will be awesome when it comes together though.

Also had to order new hubs for front wheels. Hoping that is the fix I've been needing. Surprised (well maybe not) that iND missed it.

Lol all the Audi and VW guys faces when I went around asking for a 46mm socket for the hub. The biggest they use is 38mm

Held off on hubs, realized a lot of the noise I was hearing was from needing top nut on my strut tightened down. Sounds better now.

Oh yea. Those buggers are noisy when loose and kinda intermittent depending on bump size.

Glad thats fixed. Reminds me of when Bruce replaced the entire suspension because of a finger tight caliper carrier bolt. It would rattle over bumps. Imagine his surprise when we figured that was the issue after he and Dane test drove it.

Dynamat helps with noise. Audio guys use it all the time; you should try it. Should take care of the noise.

EDIT: Not serious, by the way. :shifty

hahaha, oh i know plenty about dynamat.

i'm replacing the calipers this week and cutting the rotors, then reinstalling to spec. i think the last people to have them all off didn't torque them down properly.

I know you guys are waiting and I'm trying to get an update but keep running into issues. New exhaust should be on mid week. Had a cracked flange I had to replace or else it wouldn't bolt on properly so waiting for that piece to get here.
