So I didn't realize ATE Super Blue is illegal now??? Guys at a shop troubleshooting my creeks and rattle noise were stunned to see it into back seat.

Well the shop would t service my brakes till they drained it. Lame.

Also found the source of the noises, $1100 fix to redo the camber plate bushings and the strut bearings.

Great

I give you credit man...and your wife credit. Glad she is supporting you getting it fixed up because I know I would have said f*** it a long time ago...and then realized I wouldn't want to take the financial hit and fix it in the end. You probably already had this internal debate. The only problem is it will be hard to leave once you know you have a solid car. Making the switch might bring a new project unless under warranty and even then it could still be an inconvenience (see Guy's thread).

I still need to look into the subframe repair. No issues yet after a check, but I'd rather fix now than pay for it later.

We should implement a holiday on ZHPMafia to remember the members who've saved a car from death and distasteful/neglectful/shitty previous owners.

Hahahaha yeah for sure. Fools BMW day!

I hear ya man but it's more of a situation of I'm so deep into the car financially of be fucked trying to sell it so I'd lose either way. If I sell for $20-22k I am losing about $10k in maintenance and such. If I keep the tab keeps going up but it seems smarter to drop another $1100 than lose $10k if I can keep it 3-4 years and have low cost over that period I can then sell and have made a bigger chuck of that back as I pay it off.

She's a good car, almost went to Audi a few times out of frustration but the thought of me not in an M or even a BMW felt too foreign (pun intended).

Didn't realize you didn't have your car right now. I can wait. I'll just be playing around in the mean time. I was looking into picking up some stainless tubing to have welded directly to the muffler casing. Cheap and should look decent once polished.

Seth, I know what you're feeling regarding pouring lots of money into your ///M. I've done this to mine as well but my ///M is beginning to look/perform just the way I want it... Difference is that I intend to keep my ///M for good so I guess it doesn't really matter how much money I will continue to put into my car.

I have to give it to you and your wife because you have stuck through it all with your ///M. Eventually, you will have a fully sorted out example that you can really be proud of because you did it! To me, there's no more satisfaction than knowing that you were the one who had fully sorted out your ///M, if you know what I'm trying to say here... :thumbsup

Keep the fight Seth....looking forward to seeing more progress on your project :)

We went through this with our E53 4.8is. After a shitload of $$ in repairs we decided it was time to move on. We have twins now and they are pretty expensive little guys so we decided to replace with an MDX.. Reliable vehicle and really nice.... For someone that has never owned an X5. See what I'm getting at? There is not one trip that we take where we don't say we miss our X5....

I'll try taking a video tonight as I bring the car from one shop to another. Guys told me I needed new suspension. Then when coils get there try to tell me it's a 10 hr job - another $1200 labor.

Fuck that. Ripoff artists already got me for $1100 fixing broken struts already. I basically trust no one anymore.

Local Pep Boys which is same price per hour quoted me 4hrs so bringing it there first thing tomorrow morning. Yet again - 4 yrs in a row installs coming down to the wire before leaving for Timmayfest on Thursday AM. I'm heading to muffler shop 7:45am Thursday morning before leaving to get exhaust installed.

Along with vid can you provide insight into boominess and drone? Also interested in understanding how much louder it is for daily city driving when playing in the low rpm ranges.

Mine isn't so much louder now other than additional rasp so music, talking, etc is still doable around town.

UdubBadger
06-05-2014, 07:46 AM
It's loud but it's refined, that's why I did the ar25. Sounds sporty when cruising at speed and then VERY sporty when WOT. Never too obnoxious but very exotic. I was going for a refined Porsche sound.

Think I hit it.

Not to sound like a douche or play devil's advocate, but honestly man, you have the biggest case of "First World Problems"... Yes, I know you got burned by a shady deal, but we've already been into the details and hopefully the lessons learned about buying a car at night/without a thorough look over.

You're complaining about having to buy suspension, but then you drop $$$ on Bilstein coilovers?? Seriously?!?! I paid $125 for a used set of H&R sport springs and I'm pretty damn happy with them. I'd kill for a set of Bilstein coils...

I understand that perhaps you don't have a garage, tools, or the skills to work on the car yourself, but you could save a lot of money by doing your own labor. Slapping on and setting up coilovers takes basic hand tools... Pay $90 to have it aligned afterward and you're set.

I'm super glad you "saved" the car and that you're getting it all sorted out, but honestly man, the "charity case" in this thread kind of burns me a bit. You're driving a freaking M3... And looking at your retired cars, you've already owned close to $100K in other cars...

Again, please don't take this as an attack, just perhaps an alternative perspective. Hearing how you "hate your life" because you can't get your exhaust installed... Seriously?

Look at the fact that you're driving one of the best M cars BMW has ever built. I'd love to be able to afford an M3. Still happier than ever with my ZHP.

UdubBadger
06-07-2014, 09:15 PM
Well not to sound like a jerk but feel free to pass this thread over from now on if you don't like what it contains or how I approach restoring this car.

I'm not even going to get into addressing anything more than that but I will just say I only am replacing what came on the car when I bought it. I've purchased coils twice for this car and sure I could have put new oem struts and springs on it but that option was only about $375 less than the coils ended up costing so I made the investment there to have what I will want in the end. I'm not mad I spent money on coils I'm mad I was forced to spend money on stuff I already replaced.

Thanks

Rears (Pss10's) went on, car feels great even pre alignment. Now to just get that last brake caliper swapped. Got some Ate inbound from Turner along with new 20mm spacers to push the rears out properly - 10mm ain't cutting it.

Goin' HAM mobile

UdubBadger

Well more BS keeps coming. Calipers I got from Turner were not coated in anything so everyone of them has already rusted out. Called TMS and they literally laughed at me and said "it's kind of assumed they'd be bare"

Is it? They looked painted/coated in standard gunmetal like a new oem caliper would be.

Now I have to pull everyone off, have um blasted and powder coated and reinstall. Can't pay for the labor on this one elsewhere so I'm gonna have to figure something else out.

If you need low budget, duplicolor caliper paint holds up extremely well. My calipers were rusted really bad. I had to chip some of it off with a hammer. I just wire bushed them and him them with some brake clean and painted them. I didn't even take them of the car. That was 5 years ago and they still look great. I expected it to only last 1 season...

I have done the same with my old truck. Wire brush wheel on a drill if you have it...hit with brake cleaner...mask everything off...overspray carries outside the wheel well..and spray a few coats of your desired color...dries hard like enamel..great stuff

I have to agree with Turner on this one... BMW calipers at the time didn't have any coating on them. Just look at any stock E46; all of the calipers are corroded/rusty looking by now.

Rob's method using DupliColor is probably your best bet. It's cheap and lasts quite a while, depending on what prep work you put into it. Remember, it's all in the prep!

And that's fine but I would have at least liked to have been told that upfront is all. The new ones they sell are painted and when you say something is fully reconditioned I guess I expected them to be at least coated in something to slow down the rusting process. When I got them they literally looked newly painted gunmetal grey.

There is a place in the city called Phoenix Caliper Company - guy owns a Phoenix Yellow E46 M3. Talked to him yesterday, seems pretty cool so I'm gonna see what it would take to sandblast and powder-coat these suckers.

Maybe he will trade for website photos.

Yeah that's good and all, but one can't just do that and "expect" it to still be good after a while. If it is, then great... but the more prep you put into it, the higher the chance it'll come out right. That means, removing all oxidation and rust, as well is giving it a damn good scrub and oil removal. They need to be squeaky clean to be able to reasonably "expect" it to last a long time. This applies to anything that gets painted...

BP you're still missing the point. I know what you're saying, I've been at this for close to 40 years.
I'm saying the product is good enough that if you don't feel like taking the calipers off and "doing it right" it will still hold up...

Seth, is this a Gruppe M rep? If so where did you get this? Also are you getting any errors while using this CAI?

The reason I'm asking is because I tried a few years ago running a Gruppe M Rep and had nothing but issues doing so. So much so (all banks running lean) that I went to aFe for a CAI until I finally sourced a real Gruppe M CAI...

If everything is running perfectly then I would recommend getting the aFe elbow as well. Brings my heart joy to see awesome progress being made to the ///M :biggrin

Lol did you ever remove the intake on the M54? M3 is right there at the top opposed to messing with two boots and upside down and backwards clamps. You'll be fine! :biggrin

When you're used to an aftermarket suspension previous to a stock version, you can feel how much more an OEM suspension needs to feel the same way. I'm sure uDubs and Caks can feel me on this one! I was spoiled with my ZHP but this OEM M3 suspension leaves a lot to be desired although it's still good enough to put the "A-Hole Hat" on once and a while....LOL

Seth I'm sorry your M3 got hit man, I know how you feel and it sucks not having your car because of someone elses negligence. Thankfully it doesn't look to bad and it shouldn't cost you anything to fix. Just make sure to file a claim through the other dudes insurance and maybe let your insurance know what happened just to be on the safe side.

On the bright side, maybe you feel like having your hood, bumper and passenger fender resprayed just like my car when I got backed into. A whole new fresh front end!

Yeah I see that part of it for sure. However a few points to make on the subject - not to be a constant Debbie downer.

1. Regardless of who's insurance pays my rates will increase likely.

2. My $1000 deductible will need to be paid upfront until they work out stuff with his insurance or sue him for damages. On top of that's insurance only covers $25 a day rental car so I have to pay out of pocket for that as well since no rental car is $25 a day.

3. My carfax is now dirty and while I have photos and all that to show the severity and documents, the cars resale value will now forever be effected by it, possibly to the tune of several thousand dollars.

Just doesn't seem fair I go through all the hassle and financial costs because some asshat decided it would be fun to get wasted and bash into a row of cars.

Either way it's at iND so it's in good hands and MAYBE I'll get lucky and get a new toy or two out of this.

cakM3
08-19-2014, 04:47 AM
Seth, unfortunately you're correct. Your carfax will show an accident but you have photos to show the extent of damages so for any prospective buyer, you will have all supporting documents showing how your car was properly repaired back to stock or better than stock condition. Your resale may take a hit but then depending on the buyer, maybe not.

Hopefully you can hammer the crap out of that asshat and really make him pay for his stupidity.....there are consequences for one's actions and he should be held accountable for what he did. It's simple as that. Hopefully, you will be properly reimbursed and compensated for your troubles. Good luck Seth! :thumbsup

Seth this part may not be that bad.

Yes the Carfax will be dirty and yes the resale will be lower, but in a case like this your insurance company should cover diminished value.

Basically if you ever sell the car you should be able to recover the difference in value from the insurance.

Fredo in 2008 9 days after buying my first brand new BMW e90 a fedex truck on the highway started littering the the road with packages and one hit my car hard, $1250 worth of damage. FedEx paid it out of pocket and my insurance wasn't even contacted, however 2 months later at renewal time my rates jumped up because of my motor vehicles report.

Talk with your friends about this, but I'm pretty sure if you go through the other dudes insurance about the accident, your insurance rates won't go up because your insurance isn't doing anything. His insurance is also directly responsible for providing you a rental car for however long your car is in the shop for necessary repairs. I would raise hell about it.

Good luck Seth I hope everything works out.

+1 Who knows, maybe you will continue to struggle with this one, but your next car will be next to perfect for the entirety of your ownership! And then, you will appreciate it that much more. :)

Siliconing an air filter... that's a greeeeeeat idea. :rolleyes
I imagine replacing that filter would get old, quickly.

They clean out pretty easily once a year.

I don't doubt it would sound louder, but wouldn't you lose power due to the air not funneling properly? Not to mention it would be a pain in the ass to change that filter.

Maybe your trolling and I'm just not paying attention? :shrug

If you read that guys thread he reported no power loss at all.

Yeah cleaning it would suck I suppose but how do you swap them in the CSL intake?

I'm sure you could make a removable bracket system that would be less permanent

Yeah, he claimed this without any actual dyno testing.

He did say it was a prototype... should probably give him a chance to make a better version. What exactly is wrong with an aftermarket intake?

Restricted airflow from bends and bottlenecking. Some are fine but that's a big filter so will take in more volume of air. Changes the sound dramatically too.

I like the idea, but not willing to hack up my car just yet. Would need an additional one to play with.

Edit: I don't like how it isn't taking in cold air from the front like the oem intake. I have all the stuff to perform the IAT relocation, but haven't found the time yet. That won't change the sound but I think it would change the performance in a non-denominational way. If that's true then I think this would lower preformance.

Ya it's not done. He said he wanted to create piping to the brake ducts

Without any dyno proof I would be very weary. Sometimes the "butt dyno" can be skewed by the ear dyno, more or different sound can sometimes confuse actual results.

EDIT: Also, it kinda looks ghetto/sketchy IMO. Is it worth whatever minor increase might (or might not) exist to have it look like that? No thanks.

If they can make it look more professional and clean then dyno doesn't really matter. We put $$$ intake on our ZHP's for sound, not power. I'd be happy with a more aggressive sound from the S54. A loss or gain of 10HP means nothing in a street car with over 300HP to begin with. We don't time our way to the grocery store or do we??? LOL. It's all about the sound and emotion.

Yeah I should just get some ITBs and water meth injection if I want sound

I just find it completely ridiculous that you have to spend $2500+ for an S54 CSL "like" intake then another $1000 for tuning! That's the cost of actually increasing power on a NA engine. I know that cost can be justified if your modding budget is high and it makes certain extremities of your body grow. ;)

Looking at this thread as inspiration right now. I love my M3 but I feel like I could have gotten better for the money. Knowing that the entire car has been repainted for a reason I do not know is a little unsettling, especially when I did all the research I could to see if the car had been worked on in such a manner. There are definitely some noises and whatnot to care for on it, as well. I have been having mixed emotions about my car this first week, but I decided to just do this car right and make it what it should be. Dropped my first $500 in parts on it, and I will be addressing issues one by one and turning it into an awesome M3.

I suppose that's all part of the fun, right? :biggrin

The total amount spend spread out by how long you have it should be very small compared to getting a "smoking" deal on the same car. I wouldn't sweat much. It'll deliver in miles per smiles, not miles per dollar!

I suppose, but it'd be even worse had I paid it in cash. I'm not too bummed about it. Every car gets paint eventually.

Uh... My intake is stock. Interesting in-take on the situation, I didn't realize S54's sounded so terrible. lmao

In all seriousness though, I wouldn't ever hack up a car like that.

Every car gets paint eventually.

My 2 owner (including myself) ZHP needs paint, from the front up to the B-Pillar. She used to spend lots of time on the interstate attempting to pass lots of trucks. I-40 between memphis and little rock is NUTS.

Looks decent and ties the darker theme from the wheels, but I think I like the clears. Need some photos of the clear to compare. I like the smoked on tiag because otherwise it is generally boring.

I might be too focused on just the front end rather than taking it all in as a bigger picture. By the way where did you get the kidney grills?

What do you mean "sedan style clears"? I've never seen anything other type of clear on an M3 other than what the factory one looks like...
