Alright guys and gals Got new tires today on the front. I have an update for tread wear, then I have a great tip I received from my tire guy.
Tread wear- Mich pilot sport AS Plus 235-40-18 front tires. I still had tread in the center of the tire, about 2 mm above the wear bar. Hated to get rid of them, but the edges were shot from the inability to rotate. Total Mileage- 29,100 Miles. Not bad.

Now, my tire guy is an old guy that has had his business in Asheville for years. He does a lot of higher end cars. He even sits on City Council. I asked him if he could flip my rear tires from one side to the other (the DWS are NOT unidirectional) as they have about 8k on the rears. He said he could do it, but he doesn't recommended it. He said it would lead to higher tire noise, and potential handling issues. He said once the tire gets set in its direction, its best to leave it alone. He also said BMW doesnt recommended rotating anymore. I found that interesting. He complimented me on my car too. We talked about BMW's. he said hes owned more than a few of them, and many of them had a staggered set up like mine. Said the first one he owned with a staggered setup was a 1980 Alpina 328 (or 323, i dont remember) But holy rare car, batman. That gave him all sorts of street cred in my book, not that he didnt have it already. Jan Davis Tire in Asheville, NC is officially

Sweet! Glad to get confirmation on the non-rotating business.

30k for miles on our cars is not too shabby. Well done!

Star Spec's are made by Dunlop (aka Dunlop Direzza Z1); not to be confused with the star on the sidewall of OEM BMW tires.
I have squeezed ALL of the life out of my Michelin Pilot Sports as I possibly can. I am down to the cords on the inners of the fronts after about 30K. The rears are not as bad, but only after 15K. Surprisingly, even though it sounds like I am driving a train, the tires still grip well with almost zero tread.

So I am in the market for new tires. I was considering going to an all-season to extend driving this car a few more months into the winter - but I have a winter car so I don't HAVE to. I am considering the Continental Extreme Contact DWS or maybe the pilot sport a/s plus.

So my question is this: How much of a trade-off in performance are we talking about? For example, there is a curve in the road I take to my house every day that is posted at 25mph. I can hit it at about 55mph without getting loose. The michelins are rated 220 AA A. The continentals are rated at 500 A A and the pilot sports A/S's are 500 AA A. If I hit that same curve (dry, in the summer) with the continentals, will I get loose at 50mph, or 45mph or what? Or would the traction difference be noticeable only at "track" speeds? If I can hit the same curve at 50 or 52mph with an all-season tire and get double the tread life (in theory), it seems like the right choice. If I am all over the place at 40-45mph, I might as well drive a minivan.

Ok-- this is supposed to replace the ASX. Looks like they've only been out since June or July.

    Very good reviews so far...
