Those strap things should work perfectly, just push it in at the top with a little sawing motion and work it down the side, then pull the roundel up.

finally bought new floor mats. was debating between OEM or something different, decided to go with the bav auto plush mats w/ silver piping. looks like this:

should complement silbergrau exterior and my interior nicely, esp. with the grey M3 style gauge cluster face i just bought as well as the Coby wheel and all the alcantara...

Have you replaced the water valve? Also known as heater control valve. It's crazy easy but do it when stone cold so you won't lose any coolant. I have a DIY bookmarked for that. PM me if you want me to dig it up. ECS has a good price on the part. It's located under the upper intake boot.

Finally got it off....The straps I used weren't as wide as the one in your pics but after breaking the strap twice it finally popped of with a screwdriver shoved under it to pry up.

No, as far as I know it is original. My heater works fine though, blows hot when set to hot and ambient when set to cold. But when you turn the A/C on and engage the compressor, the air doesn't get cold, even with the dash dial set to 3 cold dots and the temp on 59*. I don't understand how the heater valve would impact the A/C, but I guess I have seen crazier things...

The car is back in the shop that originally did the work. I'll let yall know what they find.

That's the classic symptom of a stuck heater valve. Save yourself some bucks and order one today and pop it in when it arrives.

At the very least don't let the shop nail you for a bunch of labor. This would take a pro mechanic 15 mins at most.
