It has naught to do with being an enthusiast, and is more personal preference. I grew up in CA and never thought twice about having a front plate. Of course, I left before the advent of the interwebz and naively thought every state in the union required it. Just one of the things I've liked and grown accustomed to having lived in IN for the past 20 years.
Picked up my ZHP in Munich and I had no choice as it came with the front mount. But it was easily reversed using the center insert sans plate holder. One of the nice things about the E46 in that it's reversible should you or a future owner decide to go without.
Just that drilling unnecessarily into a bumper can arguably be considered as a mod too far by some, enthusiast or not.
