You're not looking for a rattle. You can rattle and still be fine. Its the seals that are failed. That's allowing oil blow-by in the VANOS cylinder and loss of pressure. Therefore engagement is slow. You change the seals and beak them in you will feel the difference.

Cool we can definitely help with the VANOS. I've done two of my own and helped Chris Merritt do his. Procedure is pretty straight forward. Take stuff off and put stuff back on. No timing or odd work necessary.
