The addition of a vacuum hose from the CCV to the back of the intake manifold to one of the capped off ports.

I read further into the thread and it seems that those who have done this have seen almost no oil consumption and have had no negative side-effects. I only read a few pages past that point though, so I was going to finish reading the whole thread before I did anything, just haven't had the time to do so...

yes, it seems like an easy thing to try. however, you need to verify that you have no other vacuum leaks - they specify replacing the dipstick tube o-ring, which is a good idea. i did that a while back.

also, installing a PCV valve in that line from the CCV to the IM would be a good idea.

this mod is likely good for warmer climate applications. personally, i don't want any condensate going back into my oil pan, and i don't want any possibility for the CCV freezing, or the drain line from the CCV to the oil pan freezing (or clogging) - that is a recipe for oil hydrolock. so my setup works for me.

but you should do this - i'm curious to see your results!

I'm not sure. It just eats it up. The problem seems to be pretty common. This seems to be on the more extreme side of the scale. Check the last page of this thread.

The weird thing to me is that some people don't seem to have this issue at all, which makes me wonder what's different.

My M54 consumed no oil for 7500 miles. There were some concerning things in the Blackstone report, so I'm bringing my next change down to 6000 miles. Hopefully it was just all the crud from the previous owners and the heavy maintenance from February washing away.

Anyway; everyone talking about oil consumption makes me nervous, but I check my level each time I fill up the fuel tank and I haven't seen the level getting lower.. fingers crossed.

I use the BMW Twinpower 5w30 oil.

Before I changed my ccv I got the yellow light at 3500 miles, after I swapped my ccv I get it now every 1500-2000 miles... I did a little reading and many people said swapping their ccv especially to a cold weather version one increased the oil consumption...

A few mechanics I talked to about this say that oil consumption is normal for the M54... the only thing I don't understand is why it's so extreme sometimes. Quite a few think it's just because the CCV system is a POS design and I'm inclined to agree with that, given the fixes for the problem are both CCV-related.

If you have no consumption now, just you wait. lol

all engines consume some oil, especially when driven aggressively. nothing to be done about that. but i can't agree that it's 'normal' for the M54 to consume this much oil - because, really, i was using more oil, and now after my CC/PCV setup, i'm not using much at all. my driving style has not changed. my oil choice has not changed.
