Probably because those mounts were designed for your engine. There is indeed increased NVH with the M54 using M3 mounts.

Personally I love the feel, but it isn't as buttery smooth as the M54 mounts.

It's not the car you drive, it's how you drive it.

Now I'm thinking more, that I'd prefer stock, if the NVH is noticeable.

It's noticeable, but it's not harsh. It's like the difference between getting in a stock E46 and getting into a stock E30. The E30 has more engine "feel", but it's not obtrusive at all. You only (barely) feel it at idle; it's silky smooth the second you touch the throttle. It's essentially an OE+ mod. I'm so used to it that I forgot I even did the mod.

So why is that better? Lasts longer?

Well, in our case, "probably"? Why it's better depends on what you're after.

When I did it, I was after a car that didn't feel so numb with regards to the overall "experience". It was too refined, if that makes sense. I wanted a car that made me feel like I was driving it, instead of just driving "in" it. This is why I could never have an electric car; I need to feel the car itself, just enough, to make me feel like I'm actually involved. With that said, this is nothing like solid mounts (feel everything like you're being hit upside the head with it, noise up the wazoo, etc.). It's more like a gentle reminder that you are in a car and not in a living room with background noise.

If it lasts longer, that's just a bonus.

I went with m3 mounts cuz almost everybody said they'll last longer. That's the only reason I did it.

The only difference I noticed is at idle. And it's really not much more noticeable than my dad's stock 330.

I put them in because I didn't want to have to do that job again. I noticed no difference at all.

When I removed my stock mount at 142K, they appeared to be in perfect shape...

Took the removable hardtop to an auto upholstery shop and had the headliner replaced. Instead of using the black-gray color fabric of the original, we opted for a black headliner fabric with full insulation installed between the underside metal surface and the new headliner material. There was virtually no insulating material present in the original arrangement and this explains why the car was actually quieter on the trip home with the convertible top back up in place than when I was driving over to the upholstery shop with the hardtop in place.

Curious what they're charging you? Mine needs to be replaced. There is a good DIY on the fanatics site, and I'm debating whether to go that route.

Happy Birthday to Ness, turned 11 today. Bought a nice gift for it which I will reveal when I get it. Also after reading Derek's (derbo) post on the bluetooth kit he bought, I bout the MPOW version and really like it. My bluetooth in my Dynavin head unit is not playing over my speakers so I think a connection might have come loose, but it wasn't all that great anyway so I like this easy to use version.
