Bridgestone Potenza Re71. These are the new upgrade that replaced their Re11's. I now have the recommended matched set; had upgraded the rears a few months ago.

If your shifting ever starts to feel weird and notchy or just plain garbage, change your transmission fluid to ATF as BMW says but if it’s perfect then keep on motoring. I had a combo of ATF/MTL in my 6MT with more bias to ATF which was perfectly fine.

12 hours later, I finished replacing my OEM 3.07 diff with a 3.38 (purchased used on EBay for $225, including shipping). I did have to swap output flanges, but that was easy. In fact, the whole job was relatively straight-forward, but I did get pretty tired of getting up from under the car to apply and release the parking brake just to move the damned flanges to expose the screws. On that note, don’t bother farting around with screwdrivers in the brake rotors—that’s silliness.

As for results, this was the most noticeable performance mod I’ve done by far. I put over-sized tires on my car, and I paid a price in responsiveness, but the shorter gear ratio has more than made up for it. I can’t wait to get back in it tomorrow morning!

Glad you got it done and initial impressions are positive. I really like that ratio (though 1st can be a bit short at times).

And a hand brake helper is useful for that job for sure.

It is a bit over-zealous when launching but not as bad as I feared—limited slip may yet have a future. It’s made 2nd and even 3rd gears WAY more fun though. I’m heading out this morning to enjoy some twisties and see how it fares on the highway at cruising speed.

I’m most relieved that it’s running flawlessly. I did NOT want to have reinstall the old one. The diff supposedly only had 85,000 miles (half all the others I saw out there) but came from a wreck.

What kind of LSD do you have?

Just got back from my run and my oh my oh my... I am loving this new diff. Took it up on Interstate, and it's now running just shy of 3,100rpm at 80mph versus about 2,800rpm with the old diff (which calculates out perfectly)--not bad at all... might even be better.

First gear is shorter, but it's definitely still viable as a starting gear, the electronic nanny was fairly easy to keep at bay, and I still think I can hit 60mph in 2nd. My impression is that it makes EVERY single one of my gears better... one of these days, I'll have to swap in a set of my 17" APEX wheels with 245/40's to see what that feels like.

Needless to say, I HIGHLY recommend this mod.

MFactory Helical. And I agree completely. I love 2-4 and 6 is great on the highway for passing. Not much need to downshift.

    Glad you like the ratio/decision.

Interested to see what you think when you put your APEXs on. I'm considering a 3.38 diff, and those are the wheels/tires I have.
