It's not the car you drive, it's how you drive it.

Hmmmm. Not challenging you, just curious. I went back and forth with a CT inspector when I registered my gray market BMW some years back. They insisted on MPH and the FMVSS nor CT law stipulates a unit of measure (mph v. kph), further FMVSS doesn't even mandate a speedo, if memory serves, providing that you have a tach. NC doesn't seem to stipulate a unit of measure for a speedo, only that it is in good working order.

No it doesn’t, but the State inspector wouldn’t sign off until it was changed.

Ah yes, enforcing rules not codified in state statutes. Yup, same issue here but in slightly different circumstances.

Bingo. But I’d just spent pretty good money on the first car I’d ever imported, and really didn’t feel like making a huge scene with the one man who ultimately would determine if my car would become a legal US vehicle. Certainly not over something so petty.

I’ll just buy clean Bimmian faces during the next seasonal sale. Or an M3 cluster.

If I were wealthy, I would probably be pretty bored with my FU money. In that case, I would torture (figuratively, of course) these DMV inspectors (among other petty bureaucrats) who decide to pull laws, regulations, and policies out of their ass.

They should be lined up and dispositioned appropriately.
