Toyota just recalled 1.6 million vehicles over Takata air bags... that brings the worldwide total to almost 70 million and 17 auto manufacturers

Well then...I guess I can expect an air bag right around the time I die.

Yeah. I can't see how they haven't folded yet.

If they did go under, there would be millions of cars that would be unsafe so I imagine the world wide auto industry would prop them up... at least until the recalls are done. It's hard to believe that a single manufacturer supplies so many auto companies around the world

From yesterday's WSJ, Takata is trying to raise funding and appease automakers without having to file bankruptcy. They hired an investment bank to seek funding and work with automakers--hoping to jointly fund the cost of the current recall of 70 million bags that need replacing (with another 55 million possible).

I finally installed the BMW battery tender yesterday. The smell of crayons and feeling the alcantara made me nostalgic and saddened that she sits, undriven, until this stupid recall is addressed.

I did trade the X5 in, and they discounted the car heavily because of this recall.

I called the dealership and got my rental. It's just an F30 328i. still good for awhile. It's $64 a day if you choose a BMW, $44 if you choose something else. I called around until I found an enterprise near me that had a BMW in stock. Pretty painless process. My SA was like there are like 9 other mofos like me lol All of us got rentals, and none of us have done the passenger side which has been out for awhile LOL

They told me they would give me a 2k credit towards any new car on their lot if I traded in my ZHP. They appraised it to be only worth $6,000 though, that was a big laugh. So essentially they ordered 8k if I bought a new one.

Just received a phone call from BMW Customer Relations regarding an "interim" solution that would make my ZHP safe to drive again. Basically they'll be replacing the existing 10+yr old airbag with another Takata airbag but younger/newer. They say the safety issue won't happen to those Takata airbags that are less than 6 yrs old. This is just a temporary solution and the car will eventually fitted with the new safe airbag when it becomes available.
I was going to decline this interim offer, but the customer rep told me that BMW will stop paying for the rental in about couple weeks because they now have an interim solution.

Here's how I'd counter that one: I'd say give me a $2k discount over and above the best price I could negotiate otherwise. No trade, since you're not going to give me reasonable value.. just a "goodwill discount" because of the airbag issue. Get them to agree to that, then inform them that the way you're going to ensure that the pre-discount price isn't inflated, is that you are going to have a "mystery shopper" negotiate the deal for the car you want, then you will step in and finish the deal, at $2k less than the price your proxy negotiated.
I'd love to see the look on the sales manager's face at this point.

sobering article. As I read through it I became increasingly angry about this whole situation and concerned about the airbags in our cars. BMW needs to start giving us updates on our bags. Just throwing in new passenger and driver units does not fix the underlying problem: The airbags in our cars have the same formula as the Honda bags that have caused the death or injury of fellow human beings.
Maybe BMW hasn't had any ruptures (yet)
because the BMW airbag cases (driver side anyway) are more robust than the Honda ones? Or just plain luck. And as far as I am concerned we are all on borrowed time with our bags' safety.
Next time I'm at the dealer for some oil I will be talking to a service advisor for sure.

They're not going to be able to update you - it's all on Takata. BMW has no control over the situation - Your service advisor isn't going to be able to get you a defect-free airbag, at least not anytime soon.

It was never intended to be a fix, but instead something to "get you by", a workaround. A new airbag (even with the faulty design) will not have this problem, at least not until it has aged and the components have degraded. That takes years to happen, and by then there will be corrected airbags out in circulation. At least they're doing something instead of throwing up their hands.

Dropped my X1 off at the dealer last week for routine service. Spoke with the SA at length about the airbags since both of my BMWs are on the list. According to the SA for the E46s the replacement driver airbags starting to trickle in about 2-3 at a time, at which point they start going down a call out list of customers. For the X1 BMW NA supposedly gotten the first batch of 3000 replacements in which they examined and sent back due to not meeting BMW's standards......

I read the same article as you, so as a 12 year old would say: "I knowwwwwwww" . I meant that I would talk to a SA to get in line to try to get on a list for a non aged airbag. I realize those are safer even if they are not a fix. Thanks for trying to explain though.

THIS is what I mean. BMW is probably hiring other companies to build airbags now. Appears the first batch didn't past muster. Thats an update that I would hope to find out about.

I don't think BMW would ask anyone other than takata to make replacement air bags, I mean it's takata's fault why would BMW pay to get them replaced?? :dunno

Ah ok. Well Im not directly quoting but:
- Takata has no where near the capacity to replace the airbags.
- Takata has no where near the money to pay for the recall. They said something like 11 billion in costs. and Takata only has a few hundred million.
- Car companies are already hiring other airbag companies to make new airbags (it would be foolish to wait years for takata to get around to it anyway)

Slightly frustrating but there's nothing you can do about it. Let your airbag go off, you'll be injured, you can sue and then not work the rest of your life. Win win.

Guys, what happened to living on the edge? Lol.
Some penis wrinkle in a WRX almost T-boned me in my M5 on the way to work today. Shot out of a side street like he'd been fired from an M16, never even saw me. I had to swerve to avoid him, thankfully nobody was next to me.
It really gave me pause to think about driving not one, but TWO cars currently equipped with shrapnel grenades sitting inches from my chest. I emailed my SA this morning and requested the "interim fix" for both cars. No response yet. Jackass.

A proper seating position and wearing a seatbelt should solve this problem. Chances are if you did get in a collision it won't be high enough of a speed to allow you to hit the steering wheel - it would probably be lower speeds. But, it is what it is. I'd rather hit my head than to bleed out from a severed artery.

This...
In the old days, it was common for a person to impale the steering wheel center. The ring would fold under impact... these days there are crumble zones and steering columns that collapse on impact. If you hit something hard enough to cause the steering column to impale while wearing a seatbelt then an air bag isn't going to help anyway

Someone from BMW North America reached out to me and explained this interim solution. They have a new inflator that will take away the safety vulnerability if the airbag were to be deployed. Takata will be producing a replacement airbag system in the next 2 years and at that time I will be notified by them again to bring the car in to be installed. Long story short there are 2 options:
1) Accept the interim solution which takes away the safety issues that we all know about and have them ship the new inflator from New Jersey to my local BMW to schedule the install. Install time is about 45 minutes and that would be it.
or
2) Deny the interim solution and continue driving the Enterprise vehicle that's been furnished for me (Betty the Bawler Buick) and I will immediately begin taking over the $45 /day responsibility for the car. I would then be notified when the takata bag is ready to be installed and the ZHP would sit in the garage for as long as that takes.
I don't know many ppl that would opt with #2 but it is a no-brainer for us to go with #1. With that said it could be as early as next week that I'll be able to enjoy the ZHP-greatness once again. I see windy roads in my near future. :)

Statistically, I think you're better off risking the airbag. The airbag exploding is an extremely rare event, and even then, all of the injuries and fatalities have been in Hondas.

On another note...the bigwig of the service dept emailed me that I would be responsible to pay for the rental car if I didn't bring it in no later than end of day tomorrow. BMW of North America gives them 1 business day to install the part and that's it. This really sucks because it takes 2 drivers to bring both the rental and the ZHP to the dealership and we work normal business hours so....a big inconvenience but I think we'll find a way to make it work for tomorrow. I sure as haaaaAAAAAaaaale ain't paying a dime for no rental. Hale to the nah!

I also got my interim airbag inflator installed today. The dealership was very nice and accommodating. When I told them it's ridiculous to imagine that me and another driver can drop everything we're doing to get the ZHP to the dealership within 1 business day they agreed and said it's a BMW of North America policy and they were even willing to drive me back to my home so I could bring in the rental, which I appreciated. Luckily my wife's work isn't that far away from the dealership so I had her to drive work and had BMW's courtesy driver take me to her work so I could drive the rental back to the dealership so I can drive my ZHP home. :) I was worried there for a while I'd miss the 2016 Mafia Reunion because I wouldn't be able to drive it to Guy's place but now I'm relieved.

Whaaaaaaaat! Duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude! Well, you certainly won't be missing the ZHP/ZHPMafia family/driving experience! Gotta let you drive mine and maybe do some autox events. Plus we can go to Katie's C&C...Skyline Drive...you can be the control in comparing the Mid-atlantic Imola trio's (Shawn, Vas, me) cars...you can meet the "BMW Guru of the East" aka Bruce...you can drive the manual 4runner and see if you like SUVs...etc...etc...oh and I guess...school as well.

Haha I'll definitely take you up on that! It'll be nice to put faces to some of the the names around here. I'll be there starting in early August so I'll take a little to get settled (haven't even figured out exactly where I'm living) but then I'll be getting in touch! I know I've got your number somewhere...

Yeah I do. I got it before they supposedly ended it lol. Parts still not at my dealership. SA tells me it's coming soon, but don't know when. So anyways, my current plan is just to wait until the end of Aug. My deadline to register is 9/8. So I guess if I still have the rental, I'll just register for Non-op and get that permit that lets you move the car for one day, and just re-register the car later I guess.

What? That's Ridiculous!
Statistically, I think you're better off risking the airbag. The airbag exploding is an extremely rare event, and even then, all of the injuries and fatalities have been in Hondas.
Hence why I'm not in the slightest bit concerned. I was just looking for a coding opportunity. lol

BMW Of Nashville called Friday to say I was one of 4 permanent Takata airbag replacement orders. The interim solution, which was replacing the inflator, was installed about 4 weeks ago so I'm shocked the permanent solution is here so quickly. They said it could take up to 2 years! I'll update after tomorrow's install.

Nah they don't want you driving it at all. I was told that I would have like 30 miles total offset from the mileage they recorded, and that's to account for driving it to/from the dealership. The mileage is like a grey area that is determined by the individual dealership.

I wouldn't know about receiving the letter yet since I'm not home but running my VIN through BMW's recall website shows that airbags are now available, although it still says
Final owner notification letters will initially be issued via US First Class Mail to owners of the highest risk registered vehicles, i.e., oldest models in highest absolute humidity areas (e.g., USA Gulf states). As parts supply increases, all owners of affected vehicles will be notified by First Class mail.
So I guess they're finally past the high risk states. Is this still a Takata airbag i.e. still have to be replaced again in the future?

This is similar to what I was told by the dealer here in NH.
Despite spending over a healthy six-figures per year with them a year, there is no "expediting" the process.
I have not received a letter from BMW yet, but entering my VIN on BMW's recall page does show it is due for the driver airbag.

...and I can also pretty much guarantee that any E46s sitting on BMW dealer lots are getting them first:
When I was selling my 2014 X1 a few months ago it was also affected by the Takata recall. I had several buyers back away when they asked about the airbag having been fixed. I was honest with them, told them no and the BMW had not made parts available yet. Two weeks into selling my X1 BMW announced that the parts for the airbag replacement would be made available and owners contacted. All of the sudden there are a large influx of X1 CPO cars on Autotrader and Cars.com. Checking the VIN of these CPO cars on BMW's recall webpage showed that EVERYONE of those new CPO cars that all of the sudden showed up had gotten their airbags fixed!!!!
In other words BMW was more worried about making their dealers whole so they could sell their inventory than fixing the cars of actual owners who were driving their cars everyday. Bull$hit move by BMW if you ask me!!!

Got a "how did we do?" survey where they (BMW) had asked me in a prior email to give 'em all 10s for their outstanding performance.
So... because scratched trim piece. I wrote:
"While I found the airbag recall appointment was a fast and efficient experience, the trim below the new center piece was scratched all the way to the plastic (white).
This is unacceptable.
People working with BMWs should know we value the prestine, clean, protected, and maintained look and performance of our cars! Scratching the trim on a leather 3 spokes- sports steering wheel from an E46 (sorry couldn't ZHP it, because ZSP), such a cherished car, is not acceptable."
And gave them a zero on quality of work done.

Just FYI when you give anything below 97.2, the service advisor's pay is reduced. Usually, their pay plans are heavily weighed on the CSI surveys That's BMW's rules. So when you give a low number for something the tech did, it's the service advisor that takes the hit in pay. I know this because my wife is a service advisor at a BMW dealership here in Charleston. If she gets anything below 97.2 average for the month, her commission is cut in half. She doesn't draw any salary at all. She could be at 99% on the last day of the month and get 1 bad survey and have her commission cut in half.
So, unless your service advisor is a total dick, go easy on them, they are just trying to make a living doing the shittiest job in the dealership for 12 hours a day, 6 days a week....

I didn't know that and sorry for busting in Kristin's chops. I perhaps shouldn't have done that, but as I mentioned, the prior email from them essentially telling me to give them all +10s, kinda left a bad taste given the scratches. Will consider your point on next recall :)
Strange still, because analysis of survey should let you know who was given the bad points, and it wasn't the service advisor. If I recall, he/she had his own personal rating section (so it seemed to me).
Did you not bring this to their attention when you picked the car up? I would think they would be willing to make that situation right.......

Sorry you guys are having so much trouble.
I received a letter from BMW about 2 weeks ago saying the drivers side airbag parts were now available.
I called my local dealership (on Monday Sept 5), who said they could have the part within one day. I said "great, lets do this" and asked to schedule the install on Friday Sept 9. I showed up, gave them the car for 2 hours, and they did both my drivers side and passenger side airbags.
The service manager jokingly said not to tell anyone they could get the parts yet, because BMW is SUPER tight on what dealerships get them and how long they sit on the shelf at each dealership is a big factor whether someone gets them or not. I guess they had to report when they received the airbag, and exactly when they installed it.

If I recall, he/she had his own personal rating section (so it seemed to me).
it's ok, no worries. I just wanted to let you guys know... It's not like it's common knowledge how the survey affects the service advisor's pay... I never knew before she started working there.
Kristen struggles all the time trying to figure out how to word an email to the customers. The problem is that hardly anyone responds to the survey so their whole average is based on only the few people that actually take the time to fill them out. No matter how the rating sections are laid out, ultimately, it's the service advisor that takes the hit.

If the SA gets low scores because the mechanics effed up then the SA should help rectify the situation
.. otherwise, they deserve the low scores.

I would think that a few scratches is hardly worth a score of zero. They would royally have to screw up to deserve a zero, such as break the law, total your car, or something like that.
Scratches aren't good, but consider everything else. Was the work itself done correctly? Did they try to do right by you if you brought it up? Was the staff courteous? These are all things to take into consideration for a score. A lot of places (such as restaurants) use these survey results to determine who gets what work or who gets paid a certain amount.
If there's an issue, kill 'em with kindness and they usually try to make things right. :)

Seriously? Multiple scratches on your car is absolutely 100% unacceptable. They had to know the did that and (a) didn't tell you or (b) fix it, is that right? Z-E-R-O unless they made it right. Or, you tell them, I am going to give you a chance to fix this, if not, I will be submitting a ZERO for your survey. Now, if they did fix it, then disregard. I don't remember back that far :)

I haven't brought my car in for either of the airbag replacements. It says that a FINAL remedy is available for the driver's side, but it also says that if I haven't gotten my passenger side repaired yet, a "interim" remedy will be installed.
Was there ever a final passenger airbag remedy?

Here is the information regarding the BMW sub-frame class action law suit...
http://www.girardgibbs.com/bmw-e46/ (http://www.girardgibbs.com/bmw-e46/)
"Per the Settlement Agreement, if you own or lease a Class Vehicle with an expired New Car, Certified Pre-Owned or BMW Extended Warranty, you may bring your car into a BMW center NOW, at no charge. Also, you have one year from the effective date of the settlement (deadline: October 8, 2010) to bring your car into a BMW Center for inspection at no charge, and if needed, repairs. No Claim Form, letter or any other document is required to be eligible for this inspection or repair."
At this point I doubt you will get BMW to fully cover the cost of the repairs but you should still try to see whether or not they will pay for part of the repairs... never hurts to ask...

The only way any of the dealers around here would order me a bag was with my VIN after they asked me specifically which letter I got and it was the one with my VIN saying that parts were available. Otherwise before that, it was just the ring around. I just chose Alexandria because it's closest to me...Sterling, Fairfax...etc all would have done the job had I called them and told them I had gotten my letter and they would order the parts. It's all about the letter. Unless they are telling you AFTER receiving the letter with your VIN on it that they can't do it then that is BS.

Yeah, I agree, believe me. The only thing I can think of it's all tracked by BMW North America. And the dealers have to play by the rules. Letter > Order Part > Install in E46 3-series > Scratch off list one by one in easy to track manner. The parts aren't just shipped in from Germany or where ever, the parts guy said they have to go through a SPECIFIC channel via BMWNA. VIN by VIN, car by car, bag...by bag. :rofl

I said if it is vin specific the car was ordered as a base model with sport pkg(with smokers pkg lol) they said no- I said yes- they said no- i said ok I have the original build sheet/invoice that states sport pkg( i.e round airbag)and if I need to bring it back I will be lets say a little less 'polite' they said they will have parts guy see what he can do and will call me- i said no pull the vin they did and said oh it has the sport pkg "bmw sent the wrong one" WE will order it
(in other words dealership ordered wrong one) and didn't want to admit it
similar issue with passenger airbag (required 2 trips) they said vin specific and set appt. but then they basically just didn't have bag when i got there

Well I reached out to a dealership anyway. I gave them the VIN and they said they will contact me back. I need to know just in case the letter got lost or it went to the PO. :eeps
