I realize this forum is BMW-centric but as Ayan eloquently put it this is more a "family-oriented" forum where we all can share in our automotive passion. :thumbsup so in that spirit I have decided to start my Porsche 997 turbo project thread here in this forum. [emoji6]
It has been an interesting few weeks when I just decided that I wanted to have a 3rd car... probably because of Ray's unique influence as he has more than two cars... [emoji6] Thanks Ray!!
Then there's Jon Estrella who a few here know (remember Jon's Orient Blue supercharged ZHP?) - Unfortunately Jon's ZHP fell into the wrong hands and it ended up getting parted out... such a shame, it was one of the cleanest ZHPs I have ever seen... anyway Jon had a lot to do with how I ended up having this Porsche 997 turbo now sitting in my garage... we have been exchanging texts for awhile and I have been on the fence about getting a 997 turbo and Jon convinced me that the maintenance for this car is really not as bad as I have thought...
As I began my search for the right 997 turbo w/ a Mezger soul, a co-worker friend of mine told me about an ad he saw from New Country Porsche in Greenwich, CT. and forwarded me the link to the for sale ad they had for a 997.1 turbo. These were the pics from that ad that caught my attention:
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7798/26794678536_86d011a1b3_o.jpg
The dealer agreed to change out the lip spoiler as the one on the car was in bad shape...what caught my attention was this little rectangular device at the bottom of the center grill . . . a K40 Laser jammer :cool

I sent an inquiry to the dealership asking for more information on the Porsche and within 5 minutes of hitting send the Pre-Owned Manager, Rich Del Mazzio, gave me a call and we talked about my future Porsche for about 15 minutes. He was forthcoming with every question I had and told me that the car was in the shop for the 30k mile service and invited me to stop by to take a look while the car was on the lift. I set up a time that Friday to come down and go over the Porsche and to see whether or not I would be seriously interested in this car. As you can see the car was being worked on so I took these pictures... this was the first time I actually saw and touched my future Porsche...
Original price of this car when brand new was: $133,860.00

The car checked out and I was allowed to go over the car's entire maintenance history since this car was serviced at this dealership from initial delivery to the time I purchased it. Everything checked out until the dealer discovered a bad starter motor so I told Rich, the dealer's service manager, to address any unforeseen issue such as this starter motor and I will come back to test drive the car.
The Porsche was in near perfect condition inside and out and you could smell the leather throughout the car as soon as you went in... every detail gone over, the car looked like a brand new car. There were additional features I liked such as the unique color (GT Silver which comes from the Carrera GT), rear parking sensors, and K40 suite installed. Of course the car has an all black interior which was very important to me...
By the second time that I had come to the dealership, we already worked out the numbers and came to an agreement both the dealer and I could agree to and made the deal. I had the cashier's check ready and worked with the dealer's business manager to get all the necessary paperwork signed and processed so I could take ownership of the Porsche. Here I am below sitting in my Porsche for the first time as it's new owner...

Funny thing is that I am still getting the hang of using the K40 and when I thought I had it turned off it would come back on... not good when going into any military installation...
The picture below is the window sticker that my Porsche came with from the factory:

I am really appreciating everything this car has to offer and absolutely love the silver-grey shade that this car has...

All I can say is that when the dual turbos kick in this car is brutally fast.... I feel like I'm in the Space Shuttle taking off. The Brembo BBKs that come standard with this car has to be one of the most awesome braking systems I have ever felt. This is by far the most perfect "sports car" I have ever owned and driven to date...I hope some of you will have the same opportunity as I did to eventually get your dream car so you can experience what I have with my Porsche. :thumbsup

The DRLs were awesome while they lasted but there were some quality control issues associated with them and they ultimately failed due to moisture intrusion in one of the turn signal assembly so I pulled this mod after a year’s use and went back to my OE setup. Until the modded turn signal assemblies are sealed such that there is no possibly for moisture intrusion, I would not recommend getting them.

probably because of Ray's unique influence as he has 3 cars... ;) Thanks Ray!!

Looks really good Charlie. Congrats!
When I was still in Cleveland, I worked with a guy that had a 03, 996 all wheel drive. He would drive when we went out for lunch and that car was insanely quick and agile. Would have liked it more down here that the crappy city pot hole streets of Cleveland, OH.

The 3.6-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine features twin turbochargers and readily delivers an awesome 480 horsepower and a locomotive-like 460 lb.-ft. of torque. When equipped with the optional Sports Chrono Turbo feature with Overboost, the driver actually has bursts of 505 lb.-ft. of torque available.
Gary, my Porsche has the optional Sports Chrono package ;)

Tuning is so worth it on any sports car! My M3 runs so good with the TTFS tune. Actually good tuning is so worth it on any car! I'm running EFI Live on my Duramax with and additional 150HP over stock! Stock is around 365HP.

Problem is these new BMWs don't do anything for me Shawn. They have become too big and bloated in my opinion... the 911 still has maintained it's classic shape and is still a "driver's car" compared to today's BMW variants. Sad to say but this is how I feel. I won't get rid of my E46 BMW ///M as I still feel a solid connection to the road with this car. I still have that "driver's experience" whenever driving it.
Edit: sold my ZHP in September2018

Everyone, as you well know Shawn, have their preferences and that is okay. For me I wanted a pure driver's car and for me that is what I now own, hence this project thread :thumbsup
I now have my dream car and couldn't be happier. :) I would like to think I have a good collection going in my garage ;)

Seriously though, the car looks great. Porsche has never been my cup of tea, but I will always respect the Turbo, and you have an amazing one! Charlie you will soon learn that tuning a turbo vehicle is a HUGE gain... The tune on our X5///M turned it into an absolute animal...

These are also my exact feelings about the new Bimmers and the reason I've kept the ZHP for nearly 10 years. The wife is actually considering a Boxster when her lease is up on the 328i next June. If I didn't need a truck & a boat, I may have stepped into a 911 by now.

IDK, we really love our 2015 X1 35i M sport...granted it is based on the 9X platform.
I'd consider a 9X M only for the fact that I want something with a V8 again

In addition to my two 911s, I've owned a Boxster, and I've driven a number of Caymans (?Caymen?) from 2006 to 2013. Even with the bigger-motored S models, they have a different character than the 911. I wouldn't say that one is "better", just different; and they are clearly all Porsches.
There has always been a significant price difference new, and that is reflected in a lot of the materials and finishing touches in the cars - there is some indication that the 987/981 is built to a price that isn't there with the 997/991. On the other hand, a lot of the price differential is driven by the higher margin Porsche demands (and gets) for the 911 models. Engine differences and performance differences are largely built-in to justify that price gap.
The mid-engine 987/981 handles better than the 997/991 in the hands of 99% of all drivers (me included). There, I said it. An expert driver, let's say Patrick Long, may be able to wring that last percent of performance out of the 911, but the average driver will get more performance out of the 987/981. The 911 has the advantage of being able to put the power down harder coming out of a turn, the increased ability to rotate the chassis, and more power period due to Porsche offering more powerful engine options; but it's offset by trickier handling that is kept in check in the modern cars with super-wide rear tires and stability control systems.
However, the 911s generally have a higher materials quality inside, partly because more of them have been purchased with the often optional extras that make the interior nicer. The car drives more quietly, smoothly, and comfortably, and generally feels more sophisticated - it rides a more fine line between sports car and GT, while the 987/981 is pure sports car.
A big factor for me buying my current 997.2S vs another Boxster S or Cayman S was the back seat. With kids, it suddenly goes from a Sunday AM once a month car to a daily driver. And clearly, if you want the additional power of a Turbo or AWD, you have no choice but a 911. But if I didn't have kids, I'm not sure that I wouldn't have bought a newer 981 Spyder or GTS with the same money I put into the 911.

I would live to talk about the above. My debate for is between a 997,newer Boxster S, or older turbo. PM me if you are open. No kids and it's a 3rd car for my mountain house so think curves mountain roads I.e. Tail of the Dragon, Blue Ridge Pkwy etc. all would be verts.

Did that too... when trying to shut it off. :facepalm
So, coming from the perspective of someone who's never been in a Porsche before today, I can say a few words from my "never owned a fast car" (it's all relative) point of view.
The fastest car I've ever driven before this Porsche was Tony's F80 M3 (which I thoroughly enjoyed :) ). That car doesn't have near the power that Charlie's 911 Turbo (hereby referred to as 997T) has, so there is a big gap there. What I can say is that from the power department standpoint, the Porsche would leave the F80 in the dust. Let's not forget that the F80 is a very powerful - and fast - car.
Most of us don't ever get to drive fast cars, so even an E46 M3 would seem like a rocketship to us "non-acquainted" folk. But, as fast as the E46 M3 is, its speed is deceptive. It's a car that you have to wring out to get the power out of - it's a rev whore.
The 997T is on a whole 'nother planet. If we were to break it down into tiers, cars like the ZHP would be Tier 2 cars. The E46 M3 would be Tier 3. The 997T is a Tier 5 car without a doubt.
An easier way to describe it would be an airplane. You get all of the thrusty feeling you get when you're about to take off in a plane, and you also get all of the rushing wind noise as well. The only thing you don't get is takeoff. All this, and you don't even have to pass 2k rpm to get started.
The throttle pedal response is amazing, and makes me wonder why the fawk BMW can't get that right. You press the pedal and it immediately applies throttle, none of this lag nonsense that non-M E46's suffer so badly from. It feels like it's a throttle cable! I sure do miss that feeling...
When you put your foot down, you get an initial "testing phase" - it will accelerate a bit as though it was asking you "are you sure you want to do this?" phase, and then a split second later it will say "that's what I thought" and will lay it on you. Once that happens, you might as well have pressed a hyperspace button. You'd probably be able to outaccelerate an E46 M3 at full song in third while just keeping it in sixth in the 997T. It is truly scary how quickly it will reach 130+ mph.
Me being me, I was quite timid when driving Charlie's car. I don't like flogging other peoples' cars, especially if they are more powerful than mine, so I wasn't exactly out to test the limits with the car. what I can tell you, however, is that with the timid driving that I was doing, I probably still would have done laps around the ZHP at nearly maximum effort in the same corners. One particular awesome, twisty on ramp comes to mind. It's a long right-hand sweeper, followed by a short straight, and a quick left-right combo that leads you on to the highway. The car was glued to the road, and has good transitional abilities. The steering ratio is quite fast - faster than the ZHP's awesome ratio. That required minimal steering wheel turning to go around these corners expediently.
Brakes? Check. Charlie's speed demonstration also included some minor braking action. By minor, I mean "well-into-the-triple-digit speeds" with moderate braking pressure brought us right back down to 70 with ease. Those Brembo GT's are amazing brakes.
There are other thoughts about the car as well, but I'm not exactly about to write a book on the thing. :)

Interesting that you say this ... I think I know what you're getting at...
Just to be clear...I don't allow just anyone to drive my cars, especially my Porsche. I put a lot of time, effort and heart into each of my cars and Botond has, on many occasions, made the 2hr drive to come and give me a hand on both of my BMWs.
He has earned my trust and that is why I have no problem with him driving my cars. Out of everyone I know...here in this forum and outside this forum, Botond has the most time behind the wheel of my M3 next to me :thumbsup
One thing that sticks out most to me is that Botond has never asked me to drive any of my cars...not even hinting. He never had any expectation and that's why I invited him to drive my cars. When given the opportunity Botond has always been careful behind the wheel of my cars. I actually have just as much fun watching him enjoy driving my cars as he does driving them :thumbsup
You have to build on that trust before you can allow someone to drive your baby...all I'm saying. I don't look at a person as low-class or high-class. To me a person is a person. It's up to them to show me if they are good or bad. I stay away from bad, negative douche-like people....

Rob, the Porsche SSK is very close. Shift patterns are very tight and 5th/6th throws are much shorter.... this is the shifter that should have left with the car from initial build in my opinion. It is perfect! :)

Thanks!! I will admit when I saw my Porsche personally this car reached out to me. This is my third car and I'm the third owner. Perhaps this was coincidence but when the realization hit me I had to have this car. I'm the third owner on both of my current BMWs as well! Many 997.1 owners run DEPO LED tails with no issues. Personally not a fan of them because they don't look like OEM.
cakM3
05-24-2016, 06:34 AM
Only way you can put OEM LED tails from the 997.2 on a 997.1 is to change out the rear bumper using OEM LED tails. The shape of the newer style LED tail lights are very different from the 997.1 style tail lights. The cost involved to run OEM LED 997.2 tails on my 997.1 is not worth it to me at the present time...in my case, I would also have to change out rear parking sensors because my current ones won't clip into the new bumper so that would also be an added cost.
To get a similar look you have to go with the DEPOT LED tails which to me doesn't look too bad. As MiniD stated, many 997.1 owners run the DEPOT LED tails on their cars.

Start out by cleaning the lens then tape off the area really well so when sanding the surface of the headlight lens you don't accidentally hit the body of the car.
Use the 3M headlight lens restorer kit. Follow the procedure that comes with the kit but if you still feel uneasy then go on YouTube and look up videos using the 3M kit and see how it's done:thumbsup
For the film get a bucket of hot water to immerse the film in. When the film is warmed up, it is much easier to apply. Get either a hair drier or a heat gun to blow hot air on the film as you apply it. Squeegee out the alcohol-based liquid underneath the film that you sprayed onto the lens to get the liquid and bubbles out from underneath the film.

I forgot to mention that I had the dealer do a full used car inspection on my Porsche just to see whether or not they could find anything that New Country Porsche didn't. There were only 3 items listed:
1. side marker light bulb
2. recommend a new set of rear tires
3. perform a 4-wheel alignment
I reused the OE white bulbs when I swapped out the original yellow side markers for the new clear ones. This was done after I purchased my Porsche.
The rear tires weren't worn out but they were Michelin Pilot Sport tires and the front were Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. The dealer recommend that I get a new set of Pilot Super Sports to go with what I had in front. Problem is that they are not available until September (9/30/16) in my 305/30 ZR19 size :(
The 4-wheel alignment was recommended once I have PSSs mounted on my rear wheels...
Other than that, there was nothing else the mechanics could find wrong with my car. Every system checked out perfect - as expected :) My service advisor told me that their mechanics said to her that my Porsche was in perfect shape (good as new) and that I was lucky to have found such a fine car :thumbsup I can now enjoy my Porsche ownership going forward...:happyspidey

Gotcha! I did the ZHP lens just to see whether or not I could refinish the plastic lens. Now that I know how to do it... it kinda prepared me for doing my Porsche's headlight lens. After resurfacing my lens I made sure to put a UV protective coat and then laminex the lens so it will stay perfect...

My new LED tail lights (made in Korea according to a forum member) came in today.... according to him I'm about to ruin my Porsche...
https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7250/26816835284_f83942cd3a_o.png
I started installing them after repositioning my car outside the garage...
https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7490/27391529246_d687c9344f_o.png
Upon initial inspection these LED tail lights did not look bad.
https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7389/26818606013_ee60a56a5d_o.png
These lights were literally set up as "plug-n-play" which made installing them so much easier....just like OEM :thumbsup
Here's the last look of my OEM halogen tail lights.... they will be put away in the same box my new tail lights came in :)
https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7195/26818606313_34b67df746_o.png
Got the new driver's side tail light installed... you can see the difference between the new tail light and the original tail light in the pic below... the Depot LED tails sure update the look of the 997.1
https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7637/26818604673_3818c7cf92_o.png
Both sides completed... this was a very simple unscrew (center phillips screw) and swap....
https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7586/26818597973_63b5099ac9_o.png
I then put my key in the ignition and turned on the car to make sure there were no error messages indicating a burnt out tail light... there were no error messages. Everything was normal as expected :thumbsup
https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7555/26818596743_4ff2a4d76f_o.png
I went back to take a look and the tail lights look pretty good if you ask me :)
Hazards engaged to see both center yellow lights light up...
https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7353/27425562305_5791612782_o.png
I then checked the right/left turn signals and they all worked as expected with no issues. :thumbsup
The finish and quality of these Depot tail lights are very close to OEM when I compared them to my OE lenses... I am very pleased with the quality so far (notice my ZHP photobombing in the background). :)
https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7430/26816702814_0ca09a88d7_o.png
One thing to note is when I took out my tail lights... the cavity inside was dirty... looks like I will be addressing this area from time to time... just to keep things clean inside there...
https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7376/26818602093_6a91e827ef_o.png
There was some residue I found on the passenger's side.... probably someone fapping near the car... :p
https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7410/26818599503_0b09bf57b2_o.png
Got everything cleaned up before installing the new tail lights. I also applied a coat of REJEX to the new tail light lens and then applied a good coat of wax for added protection...

I happen to live in a state where the State Police are really anal and are quick to pull over nice cars that don't have a front plate so I have mine installed. All I need now are my plates so I can get them mounted. I'm quite positive having this bracket will cause unnecessary drag but then for the speeds I will be driving primarily I don't expect having this license plate bracket to affect mileage too much :rofl
Now to reapply WD-40 to my M3 and ZHP's tow hook bracket ensuring they can be easily removed if necessary :)

I feel the same way about Rhode Island State Troopers...they pull you over then give you the riot's act for not having front license plates but then go out of their way to harass you when you have window tint on your car as well... God forbid if you have a license plate cover over your license plate! That's against the law over here in this stupid state as well... :facepalm
Funny thing is that I never have any issues with the local police. In fact, most of them all know my car and I get a wave from them and I wave back :thumbsup

Yes, WD-40 has been applied so in the event I have to use a real tow hook, I will be able to. :)

Why put the lic plate on that thing hanging off the car when there are multiple mounting points exposed (yet covered by plugs)

Plugs are temporary Stuart. We talked about all of this offline. Thanks for your helpful comments :rofl

Even though it's plugged, I'd still use the plate mount.
Stupid effing dealers and moronic people who drill into bumpers.
