UPDATE TIME
OK, so i pulled the interior apart last night. pics above.
it only took 3hrs to do this starting from a full interior - surprisingly easy. the bulk of that was from the Touring rear panels and the rear seat. doing this on a sedan... easily 2/3 of that time. this 'easy' job is another example of why i love this car and how it was engineered... nothing is overcomplicated, and it all is affixed with exactly what is required to hold them in place - nothing more, nothing less - and with fastener or clips that are easy to get to. i didn't break anything - and with 12-year old little plastic tabs and my clumsy hands, that is a feat.
the last time i vacuumed this car was in late november or early december when i put the M3 seats in... it was spotless then. now? the carpets are filthy from winter, and my kids' ingress/egress. so i'll be doing a full detail before and during re-assembly.
stuff going in:
- anthracite: headliner, pillars, plastic bits, pet net hooks, grab handles, visors, etc.... basically everything to make it look like a ZHP/M Sport Touring
- homelink module from ZHP sedan
- manual-dip mirror (not an auto-dimming fan - it doesn't dim enough for me)
- ZHP full-leather door panels
- M Sport door sills
- M Sport dead pedal
- black cube trim
- leather armrest (had leatherette before)
- leather rear seat (had leatherette before)
- LCM from ZHP
- M3 steering wheel (it's a lot nicer than the one in the car now)
- new summer mats from ZHP
and i'm thinking about putting the bilstein PSS rear shocks and rogue RSMs in now since i've got the interior apart... it would save me from taking the whole rear interior panelage apart later on when i do the swap.
Oh, just casually ripping out a whole interior. On a TUESDAY[emoji91]
LOL. fortunately i work from home and we've got The Tank.... and we didn't need two cars over the next couple of days, so it's OK for me to do this mid-week.
i will have a full anthracite pillar set for sale if you want 'dibs' before i list it (got an extra set from germany). all you would need is to either paint or recover the headliner to match.
Peter's E46 330iT ZHP Superleggera transformation is in progress.
that has a nice ring to it....
and hey, i'm posting 'in progress' pics...! ;)

Fantastic progress, Peter! I am curious, did the ZHPs get some special leather door panels that regular 330i did not get?
BTW, I am taking requests for hard to find pictures from Peter's garage since I will be visiting him soon. Can't put up with the tease anymore :p

i will have to 'OK' every pic though. ;)
as for the door panels - no, i don't think so. if the non-ZHP 330i got leather seating (like yours), you should have the same door panels (although the H/K audio cars' panels are different as they have extra speakers).

Hot damn. I love how individual this car is going to be and how much detail you're putting into it. It will truly be yours in every sense of the word.
I request anandoc take TONS of pictures because this is the best chance we'll have at more than a handful of pictures.

No, the leather panels between 330 and ZHP are the same.
Peter's existing panels I think are vinyl, to match his seats - since he's swapping in leather seats, he's also swapping the leather panels to match.

re: 'individual' stuff - thanks man! i've been dreaming of this idea for a while so i kinda knew exactly what i wanted to do. the interior is all OEM stuff, but a combo of my favorite OEM stuff - so Individual in that sense, yes. drivetrain and suspension-wise, i guess more 'individual' and not 'Individual.' ;) it will be my Jack Olsen 911. constant refinement of the 'one car to do it all.'

Bruh,
do you have full leather in the back of your wag? If not how do you plan on sourcing...
I ask because I drove myself and 3 friends up skiing for 3.5 hours in a blizzard - both friends in the back eventually complained about their asses hurting a bit. I sat in the back of my own car to verify that the comfort of the Vinyl/Fake leather I have back there is in fact SHITE. They really skimped on padding over the full leather.
Plus it would be nice to have full grain to match the M3 seats up front :)

i got a full leather rear setup from a donor car on kijiji (like CL up here). it really IS a lot better - it's just the same softness as the ZHP rear leather seat.
my 9-year old son complained that the leatherette was really uncomfortable on his FIRST ride in the car - yep, he's definitely my son. ;) he said "the ZHP back seat is so much more comfortable!" not that i would doubt him, but i was curious so i climbed back there and yep, it was a lot harder than the leather in the ZHP - especially at the lowest part of the seatback, where it hits your butt/lower back - it's like a rock right there. and the leatherette just feels cheap, and plasticky (cause it is). so i had to find a leather rear setup.
so...
OPTION 1
check the scrap yards, CL for a Touring partout, etc... it's worth the expense and effort.
OPTION 2
find some M3 rear seats and use the nappa leather to make a matching rear set (the montana leather grain doesn't really match the nappa well at all... but i don't mind. it's definitely a better match than the leatherette!). i actually have two full sets of M3 rear seats because i was going to harvest the leather to recover the leatherette rear seat, but i found the montana one already done, so hey, that's a lot less work. :) but if you have a good upholsterer, it should totally be possible - the dimensions are very close and should not need a lot of alterations. i would be willing to part with one set if you're interested, for not much money.

Perhaps in the future - we'll see how the summer plays out. This may be a winter upgrade since I'm usually not driving friends around on long journeys in the summertime - as opposed to skiing in the winter.
Was Nappa only available in the M?

I'm struggling with this, myself. My inner crazy person really wants it to match (and the Montana backseat has some indentations I can't get out), but then I remember the only person/things to ride in my backseats are my two 40 lb. dogs and their nails.

yeah, and that's a good reason to keep the montana. but you should be able to pick up a nappa rear seat for around $200-$250.

Did you try a heat gun on the indentations?
BMW made a full liner for the back seat... covers everything... even the back of the front seats. We had one for the coupe up until a year ago. If you can find one, it's definitely worth it for the dogs

There's actually a pretty clean rear seat locally right now, but he's a pain in the ass about only being available M-F 9-5. Dude you've been reposting on CL for 3 months, and you have an interested buyer--do you want to sell them or not?

I tried steam, but not direct heat. I have one of those "hammock" things that goes between the front and rear headrests, but doesn't cover the door cards. I was thinking about buying a second hammock, cutting it in half, and sewing everything together for a complete coverage solution. Looks like a trip to HomeGoods is in my future.

Do you lay down a towel for your dog in the back or do you just let it fly? I've heard that the Nappa leather is less resilient than Montana leather and I could see that although I haven't had any issues with my full M3 interior. Where are the indentations in your back seats?

i'm actually kinda bummed that the interior isn't done yet. i have not been able to do anything the last two nights. i have to get it finished by monday as my wife has to go on a 7hr round trip and this car gets 2x the MPGs of the tank.

LOL. my garage is a freakin' mess right now with lumber, tools and car parts EVERYWHERE. no pics of my garage will be allowed as i'm embarrassed by the state of it. :)
re: the headliner... getting everything out was the time consuming part - once you've got a bare ceiling, putting and securing the headliner in place is easy. :)

without a doubt it's a leatherette vs leather issue, i have the leather Touring seat here to compare to.

the stock Touring bars are 24/19.
i was running an M3 bar up front and a sport 'vert bar out back on my sedan, so 26/20. i felt like i really wanted a bit more rear bar back there. i am moving the M3 front bar over to the Touring, and this 23.5mm adjustable (so... i could technically make it a little softer than that) rear bar would allow me to tune the feel a bit more. the sedan's weight distribution, as we all know, is 50/50. the Touring is 49/51... maybe it will be too much with the extra 80lbs out back... i'll find out! :)

i was running an M3 bar up front and a sport 'vert bar out back on my sedan, so 26/20. i felt like i really wanted a bit more rear bar back there. i am moving the M3 front bar over to the Touring, and this 23.5mm adjustable (so... i could technically make it a little softer than that) rear bar would allow me to tune the feel a bit more. the sedan's weight distribution, as we all know, is 50/50. the Touring is 49/51... maybe it will be too much with the extra 80lbs out back... i'll find out! :)
Interesting. Thanks for the info.
Do you know if 20 mm rear bar from XI models will fit our cars? I've seen that people putting 20 mm bars from verts" and I wonder if they are any different than XI bars.

wow, that is a lot of money for an '02 with that mileage and a salvage title. and why did he replace the stock 3.46 with a 2.93? (he said 2.73, but it's a 2.93)
with that logic, my '05 with 130K miles, full MTechII kit, anthracite interior trims, M3 seats, ZHP drivetrain and 3.46 MFactory LSD will be worth $20K when done!
(actually, hey, it might... ;))

Maybe not that much, but if you keep it in good shape it will without a doubt be the most valuable e46 wagon in its mileage range.

Are you going to replace the trim below the headlights to remove the washers or just leave them there and keep the lines disconnected?

Got the driver side airbag recall done today at Kingston BMW. Really nice people there. The service advisor appreciates the older cars, and was really interested in what I had both done to the car and what is going to be done to it. The concierge there remembered the car from when the previous owner brought it in for service. Pretty cool!

I spent some time working on the black Touring last night. I replaced the FCABs, the front brake lines, front sway bar bushings... and came across this beauty. Whoever worked on this car last, and I know it was a shop because the people I bought it from did not DIY, must have used an impact wrench on the highest setting to tighten stuff. The lug bolts and aluminum strengthening brace bolts were so tight that I needed a extension pipe on my breaker bar and tons of praying to break the bolts loose.... yes, I even needed the extension for the aluminum brace bolts! Absolutely ridiculous. Naturally, all bolts got cleaned up on the wire wheel and put back on with an appropriate amount of torque.
One of the lug bolts sheared:
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170517/659a147c403c6e8c8241b44ba56b7517.jpg
But I had my new jack to comfort me (this thing is killer - it's so low-profile that i can sneak it under the front end and lift the car on the lift point on the aluminum brace - the rubber pad makes things much nicer too, and it rolls about 100x better than my old jack):
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170517/78a70efcf77e50353e605817214a3107.jpg
Next up, the windshield will hopefully get replaced today, and I need to order some new RTABs as I noticed the rear tires have crazy wear on the inside... those bushings are probably toast anyway.
And I need to do a valve cover gasket, cooling system refresh, and OFHG.

no, i don't like any of the 996 headlights. :) (and personally, since we're talking 911s... ;) i want a 997 C2S 6-speed. that, to me, is the best 911 for the money right now.)
it is BSM. it's OK. i'm not a fan of black cars, but BSM is OK because of the metallic. i do like the carbon black that was available on the E46 M3 - it was weird, kinda blue in some lights.
the best parts of this particular car are the gloss black shadowline trim (installed on 17 of 4722 Tourings for NA), RWD sport 5-speed, xenons, and only 93K miles. it's going to stay mostly stock (i did just put poly FCABs in, and it might get poly RTABs too. it'll be perfect for my wife. might consider an MFactory helical LSD for better winter driving.
997.2 C2S 6-speed for me!

i removed the caliper and bracket, and then the rotor. fortunately there were about 3-4 threads visible once the rotor was removed. i sprayed the front and backside of the bolt remains with PB Blaster, and let it soak for a few minutes. then i inserted a lug bolt into one of the other holes and tightened it a bit so i could have some way of keeping the hub still, and then slowly backed the broken bolt fragment out with vise grips.
there was prayer, of course, shawn. :) it definitely works!

LOL. i'm not going 'to town' on this car like on the red Touring, but it's going to be my wife's car so i'm going to make sure it's 100% sorted. it will be a nice, comfy, stock-ish driver. and yes, if we decide to sell it then someone will get a sweet, rare Touring.
speaking of said Touring, it got the new-ish windshield swapped over from the ZHP today. just need to reinstall the A pillar covers, bleed the front brakes (new lines), and install some of the ugliest set of wheels (summers that came with the car) that i've ever seen, and get some plates on it!

RED TOURING
- got the A/C pressure-tested and recharged today by my friend chris @ custom auto here in picton. blows darn cold... he said it was registering at 29F! i think that's cold enough. :)
BLACK TOURING
- finished up the interior the other day and bled the brakes. front end feels much better with new FCABs and swaybar bushings. the struts are tired though.
- got plates for it yesterday finally, wife took it for her maiden voyage and again a few times today. it actually feels a bit quicker than the red one.... not for long though. ;) wifey doesn't like the manual seats. might have to install my other set of M3 seats, then... ;) (which means running +12v and GND, along with another wire from the plug under the seat as the K-line into the fuse box for memory functions. because with my 6'1" frame and my wife being 5'4", we are the classic case for them there memory buttons...)

managed to successfully remove the awful purple-ish tint from the black Touring front windows tonight with my new steamer. worked really well. will do the rear glass next week.
also bought a used set of TCK 500# 60mm linear rear springs for my bilstein PSS (going on the red Touring). looking at 285# or 300# linear fronts and GC hybrid camber/caster plates.
big dollars.
but i can dial in more caster, easily dial in camber settings, and gain 1" more strut travel. heck yeah.

ha.
nothing, really. did an oil change on the red Touring on saturday morning, and have been collecting parts and tools to replace a LR wheel bearing on the black Touring.
been crazy busy building a deck, working, single-parenting while my wife was away for 4 days, lots of traveling, working on the house, and my wife's 40th birthday was yesterday so i took the day off and we kept the kids home from school and spent an awesome day together. best day ever.
have to get said wheel bearing done this week, fix and clean the tank and get it up for sale, keep plugging away finishing the deck (it's a big one), and then we are off to VT for a whirlwind 48hr trip, and my son's birthday. then back for a biscuit of time (more deck finishing) and then a mixture of driving and away for the next 2 weeks doing a mix of vacation and family commitments. then my sister and her kids are visiting for a week... that takes us to the end of july. i have to finish the interior, and siding and roof on the house before we go to haiti the last week of august, so at this point, the drivetrain swap in the red Touring isn't happening until we get back... crappy, but whatever. it is what it is. i will REALLY enjoy ZHP power when it's done. :)

ha. i have never heard 'rozzers' before, but everyone in my house has a british alternate personality (no idea why, it's just the go-to for anything comedic) so lots of other phrases get mixed in. :)

This has been a thorn in my side for the past two nights. I think I've got eight hours in at this point. Barf.
Everything that could have been hard, has been hard. The splined part of the shaft was very very stuck inside of the hub, and required a lot of hammering to get out. A lot. Next, the hub itself was very very stuck inside of the bearing. I was almost running out of ideas to get it out as I don't have a slide hammer. Barf.
After that came out, the bearing was crazy tight. The new bearing went in nicely, but then stopped and I didn't have enough space to get the new snap ring in. So I had to seat it one more millimeter. And then I had to remove the remnants of the outer bearing race from the hub. And then it was 3 AM and i couldn't do anymore work. Barf.
And of course, I removed all of the emergency brake components, only to realize that I didn't even need to. So after reassembling that, there was 45 minutes wasted. Barf.
This is the black touring, by the way. The red car is much nicer behaved.

Time to whine - doing this as well and everything that could have gone wrong for me, did. Literally straight from the start.
1) hub nut staked ridiculously tight to axle. Had to dremel staked part off.
2) rotors fused to hub. Normally not an issue when doing brakes as I slam em with a four pound sledge. I was less confident doing this to brakes I had to reuse.
3) axles straight up fused to diff. Hammered a big ass screwdriver between the flanges. Was not easy.
4) pulling anything sucks. Hubs were a bitch, bearings worse. Made my own tool out of washers, pipe floor flanges, and the bolt from an autozone 3 jaw puller
Straight miserable. On to reassembly tonight

oh man!! we're on the same time table, crazy! :)
sorry about your troubles. 1, 2, and 3 were easy-peasy for me. nice job on the homemade tools!
my koch tools bushing tool and my bearing driver set were invaluable to remove the bearing. i bought a bearing splitter to use for getting the hub off, but it was actually too small, so i had to improvise. after a little movement and lots of pounding from the backside of the hub, i got it free. finally used the bearing splitter to get the remains of the bearing race off of the hub, although it only allowed me to get it about 8-10mm up from the base of the hub, then the tool ran out of travel. would've been easier to dremel a groove in it - thought of that, but was determined to use the bearing splitter as i bought it for that purpose. dummy! ended up using a 2-jaw puller to get it the remainder of the way off the hub.
i actually hammered the new bearing in to the face of the hub with a block of hardwood, then used my bearing driver set for the rest. the snap ring was a PITA - it just did not want to seat nicely. i had already spent time cleaning up the groove before the new bearing went in, but it just wasn't playing nicely. finally got it to a happy spot.

black Touring is still not done... sitting in the garage as we speak (er, type) waiting for the freezer-fresh frozen axle and fresh chain lube to slide into the hub's tight splines.
hrm...

Black Touring is finally out of the garage. Finally. Not after another broken wheel bolt...
This bolt seriously just came out not three minutes before it snapped on its way back in (changing wheels). And under almost no torque! If it was that week, good riddance... (damaged threads are from my vise grips.) i have never had a broken wheel bolt, ever, before this car.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170708/63cf63e7b7b643eb5a28d379b6a5a4c6.jpg
I had a seriously hard time getting the axle shaft back into the hub. After careful cleaning of the splines, twice, and using bike chain lube, I left it in the freezer for 24 hours. Only then was I able to actually get it about 3/4 of the way into the hub, and tapped it the rest of the way in with a hammer. Gently. What a pain in the rear (ha).
I think this car needs raised suspension and skid plates.

picked up some BBS RG-R's... 18x8 ET35 / 18x8.5 ET38. essentially stock proportions, but 12mm further outboard. near-new 225/40/18 + 245/35/18 michelin PS A/S 3+. not really feelin' them... on the japanrot. which is a shame because they are forged, 18lbs each, and stupid expensive.
will probably sell and go back to my ARC-8s.

but when i can finally drive it's guts in the Touring and hang the tail end out with both rear wheels digging in under ZHP powah, i won't be sad anymore. :)

Wouldn't know about the import to Canada and if they would make you a problem since it has a tractor engine.
I can always put a kilo of sugar in the engine and then you can import it as a parts car. :biggrin
I can contact him and get some info and VIN from him if you want.

Welcome back. How was your trip?
Hope you guys had a great time in Haiti Peter :thumbsup
thanks guys!
our trip was amazing. i took my wife and kids. we stayed at the rural school in lamardelle (about 1.25hrs outside of port-au-prince) that i went to last august as well to implement a computer lab for their vocational school.
our team of 16 people had three main goals:
1. VBS (Vacation Bible School) for 100 kids (there are over 500 that go to the primary school - pre-school to grade 8). 14 of the team members ran that, including my wife (music teacher), and two kids (13 and 10).
2. fix anything broken. this was handled by a contractor/macguyver dude that came on the trip, named ric. he is crazy resourceful, including repairing a broken chest freezer lid in the school's kitchen with an old metal folding chair seat and a grinder. naturally we got along well. :)
3. extend the primary school's internet connection, and network connectivity, to the vocational school - and protect the computer lab with antivirus and a firewall.... and help their IT guy with any issues/questions he had. this was my primary focus.
i pitched the idea of extending the network wirelessly last year when i was there...they already had an internet connection there (it's 3G), but they pay $300USD/month for each connection! naturally this was bleeding them dry, as they are a non-profit and rely on donations to keep the school running (speaking of the funding... you can sponsor kids at the school. a monthly donation of $30 will provide food (two meals a day - lots of times these kids barely eat at all, their families are so poor), school uniform, and of course, education. contact me via PM if you're interested in doing this!). i had no experience with the wireless technology involved, but i knew it was possible. i scouted out locations for the antennas last year. and, providentially, i got the required equipment - with spares! - for free from a guy i know at a local ISP. amazing. he helped me with the base config and i took it from there.
the setup required putting up two UBIQUITI PowerStation2 antennas - one on the roof of the medical clinic at the primary school's compound (it's a walled compound, about 10 acres in size), and the other on a 40-50' high water tower at the vocation school's compound (again, a 10-acre walled compound). we had to weld some 1.75" OD steel pipe lengths together to make them the right length, mount them to the required locations, and run ethernet cable from the antennas to the buildings.
the entire trip was a great success - goals accomplished, seeds planted, and relationships built and fortified. we were truly blessed.
onto the pics... just a few:
gotta start with the transportation. this is one of the toyota landcruisers that the school owns... we can't get these bad arse vehicles here, unfortunately... diesel, 5-speed, 4x4, dirt simple. 3 seats of front, room for 10 on the two benches in the rear. and a huge cargo crate on top. awesome.
30917
this is the view looking up the 'road', with the primary school's compound wall to the left. the road used to be about 7-8' higher than it is now... hurricane sandy (and later, matthew) did this damage - note the ledges on either side of the road... that's the height the road used to be. the mountains in the distance are maybe a 45-60min walk. they are steep, and beautiful.
30916
this is just outside of the vocational school compound, around 7PM. getting good water in haiti is very hard, but the school has dug a really good well, and once a day they turn on this outside tap and let anyone from the surrounding area come and get water. the people who run the school have such big hearts.
30918
this is the roof of the medical clinic, and you can see the antenna i put up (the flat panel on the left).
30915
this is the water tower at the vocational center. there is a ladder to get up on the backside of the tower, and it is not really for the faint of heart. i'm also not awesome with heights. this tower is roughly 40-50' high. i had to go up 3-4 times. so glad that is over with! fortunately i got the antennas aimed perfectly the first try! again... providential.
30919
this was a surprise. on saturday, the last day of our trip, the woman who runs the school took us to her family's beach house, about 2hrs from the school, on the northern shore of the caribbean sea part of haiti. it was so beautiful - this is not what you expect haiti to look like! the water was like bathwater, and sooo clear. and turquoise. wow.
30914
overall... i am so blessed to be able to go and do a trip like this. it was hard work, but it is for the right reasons.

some on-topic news... bought some more stuff:
1. GC-valved konis (used)... want to try them out with #3.
2. rogue engineering weight jacks (used). makes rear spring articulation nicer and also allows super easy rear height adjustments.
3. 300# front and 500# rear linear springs. should match the stock F/R spring ratio. might move up to 550# rears.
4. RTD mini 300mm shifter - REALLY stoked to check this thing out.
