Sometimes I miss all the accessories they used to have in the early 2000s. Can't think of a brand that offered more customization.

That’s a very odd spot to mount, it seems strangely out of place.
That aside, I didn’t know that was an accessory that was available for our cars. Pretty cool

I was more marveling at BMW's attention to every accessory. Of course BMW has an umbrella for the E46.

Which is why when I find something I find might be useful for this build and it happens to be a BMW accessory, I am inclined to get it. :)

To be honest Jacob, the placement of the umbrella is solely up to the individual where they want to mount it. You don't necessarily have to mount it where BMW recommends... I just figured I would go with what BMW recommended :)

I just figured it would mount under a seat somewhere, looks like an afterthought in that spot on the footwell.
How much was it shipped out?

That's where BMW suggests it goes on the E39 & Zcars as well.

I really did not need to have this OEM BMW accessory item but when Daniel told me this was one accessory he really wanted to have I decided why not and got this for my ZHP [emoji41]
Weather was decent enough today so I installed this OEM BMW accessory into my build. Hate it or love it, it is another OEM item to help make my ZHP build even more unique.

Today started out decent enough that I made some progress on my ZHP. The ZHP got a full undercarriage wash this morning and I then gave it a good proper wipe down after washing it. I replaced my front door weather seals as they were worn and in need of replacement. Also applied some carnuba wax to the finish and reaffixed one of the '3' badges to my boot as I spotted it loose... car looks much nicer now...

The rear sunshade retrofit has started . . .
I ran the wiring harness today
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220423/d7e46006d5e924821889ee4af9c3b060.jpg
I eyeballed the length I would need to run the wiring needed from connecting the rear sunshade to where the two wires clip into the plug at pins 14 and 15.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220423/49837eae05a49304c625215157fb57df.jpg
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220423/61a60d83aa515d15f7f06fd93e93c543.jpg
The glove compartment was removed to allow routing of the harness across into the center console. I routed it above the ventilation duct into the center console using a long wire to fish the wiring harness with [emoji4]
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220423/144fa16284ae3bf61c8ec8aa0081b2d7.jpg
This is the plug where the two pins get installed in . . .
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220423/4b17e416d72d3dfbb6b24a328cb6ce43.jpg
Now that I got the pins installed, I used more BMW cloth tape to clean things up in there . . .

On sedans there is an outline where you make the cut for the rear sunscreen assembly. I found using a dremel with a cutting disk to be the easiest method.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220501/491b5df9ab6a03ab1f71ca7c4e467816.jpg
As I proceeded half way, I taped the loose part so my cutting disk won't bind as I continued cutting.

just use a greenie and do it under running water and lightly go over the surface. no added pressure because you don't want to take off more than you need. The greenie will provide a nice finish if you go over it lightly and in a back and forth motion, not circular.

Today ended up being an amazing day so I took some time to finish off a recent retrofit. It came down to a 30A fuse in my fuse panel so I replaced it. Very satisfying to see this rare option installed on my ZHP working like it should [emoji41]

It's raining today so I'm prepping one of my OEM M3 mirror base plates to get it trimmed up for sedan fitment [emoji41]
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52085401809_0ed1d9b385_b.jpg
Per Rogue Engineering DIY you leave 1/8" exposed on the posts to trim off.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220519/32cf26f11b8249c96b53b6a7808baf29.jpg
Next on the longest part of the baseplate You mark off 5/32" at the bottom and mark off 1/8" at the top then tape off that edge trying to follow the curvature of the baseplate as best as you can.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52085401804_6221db5999_b.jpg
The last part in taping off the mirror baseplate for sedan fitment is the upper back part of the baseplate where my finger is pointing to . . .
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220519/4dba4e0b2697b7168ffd2198af874880.jpg
For this part you start 2.9" from the top and line the tape from the edge at that point to the 1/8" point on the top then you're done marking everything off [emoji1417]
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52085401799_8dcfe225aa_b.jpg
It should look like this.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220519/f7e053b624f51dfd72f6fa3ea4a0b3bd.jpg
Now you're ready to trim your baseplate[emoji41]

I also purchased this today just for the autofold motors that are part of this mirror assembly. I will be adding a section in my M3 side mirror retrofit DIY for converting the side mirror assembly into euro autofolding side mirrors once these mirror assemblies arrive.
My new wide angle side mirrors from the UK arrived today

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52113433566_1c80585aca_c.jpg
I may need to extend the mirror heat wires so they can reach the connections on the back of the mirror. I have enough wire and heat shrink to make this happen if need be...
So everything has been set in motion for starting this project, including painting the side mirrors for a July retrofit :cool I have already begun updating my DIY with more to follow once I have everything on hand to complete this DIY.

I have not seen blue tinted wide angle mirrors for OEM M3 side mirrors. At the time I got these at least... so I got these for the time being.

They have it. The OE aspherical ones are blue tinted and the line the separate the two parts doesn't go all the way from the top to bottom (and it's actually a line). The aftermarket ones are a darker shade of blue, have a line pattern that goes from top to bottom.
here's one:

- Rear Wilwood BBK kit
- Bilstein PSS-10 w/ Ground Control camber kit
- Aluminum pedals
- OEM M3 side mirror retrofit
The project I am purchasing this week and will most likely install once it arrives[emoji41]
- G.A.S. CCV kit
I am also planning to replace my power steering hoses as I found one that looks "wet" so there will be continued progress for my daily driver this car season [emoji4]

I've been really impressed with the DISA rebuild kit from GAS. I installed it on my daily driver back in 2017 and have put around 100,000 miles on since then. The other day I pulled it out the DISA while replacing the OFHG and the aluminum flap and actuator mechanism still look like new and function perfectly.

I did this for "peace of mind" not knowing the condition of my installed DISA and when I pulled it out to swap in the new DISA, I found out the old DISA unit had the G.A.S. DISA upgrade kit installed so I will clean up that DISA unit and store it as "spare parts". It was a surprise for sure.

Today was a good day to refresh the HVAC relocation kit in my M3 so I installed the new kit there and took out the one in my M3 to install into my ZHP since my 17-pin main wiring harness from AVIN arrived in the mail today . . .
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52220706741_ddde2fa100_h.jpg
The old bracket was taken out and thrown away since the ash tray cover wasn't working and was missing the chrome strip in the middle . . .
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52220974889_aa70e0e71f_h.jpg
I then took out the center vent and removed the OE bracket so I could install my new head unit. I installed the new GPS antenna, the wifi antenna and a bunch of other connectors to fit everything in without forcing anything, then I optested the head unit (radio antenna not connected) to make sure everything works. I ordered the antenna adapter so I can connect my radio antenna when it arrives but in the mean time I can bluetooth stream from my iPhone so there's no hurry to get the radio part of the head unit connected.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52220721753_2a4c9ade48_h.jpg
Everything has been put back together and I am pleased to have a radio unit that looks OEM yet provides more modern features although I still have a few things to work out. :)

This is the home screen before I got everything synched up. Since I have refreshed my cabin speakers using BAVSOUND speakers and I got this head unit from Steve, the sound output is simply amazing considering I'm still using OE Harmon Kardon amps. I'm very pleased with the quality of sound from this setup and am very grateful to Steve for providing me this opportunity to install this head unit into my ZHP :cool
For me this install/upgrade was plug and play, just the way I wanted it ;)

Thanks! Appreciate the kind words :thumbsup Unless you're planning on going to a full aftermarket stereo setup, upgrading to the BAVSOUND speakers is the way to go. Having gone from my Business CD Radio to my new Avin 4 head unit, the I-Bus app was alreay installed so I purchased the license for my car to take advantage of the full software. The one thing I like is it displays everything in one easy to read location.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220719/078f3a67501d5800243a6469bd2c1dd1.jpg
There are those who will say the info is already there but some of it isn't. I like how the info is formatted so you can easily scan for the info rather than using the stalk to go thru selections. Having ready access on one display is a much faster way to get all your info in my opinion[emoji4] Only exception is oil temp but I have an actual gauge on my instrument cluster that shows oil temp ;)
I also like that you can look at your display before turning the key to take out and easily see if any window is not fully closed . . .
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220719/89f67c57b64a3da1d6fee360774a83a9.jpg
If your window isn't fully closed, on the display (above) that window will be red so this is another quick check to make sure your window is fully seated. I don't always use my switches to make sure my windows are fully closed so this is a good check [emoji1417]

John, it did not occur to me to buy this part when I put my order in so I went ahead and ordered everything OEM and OEM+ to bring the car back. The previous owner used cheap Chinese made parts to save money and he knew he would not have to worry about the pitfalls of using cheap parts on this car. I'm just going thru everything when I can and replacing with OEM or better parts and also upgrading when I can. I have done a lot to this car but still have a lot more I need as well as want to do to this car. :) There will be a lot more work in store for this car. Going to do it better than I did on my first ZHP :cool

Wow I didn’t know ITBs were a thing for an E46! Who makes this kit? Does it add any power?

Yeah, what’s the deets on that kit?
Do you have to do any software/fueling for it?

You do have to get a tune for this setup and I am working with a very good friend who has all the information I need to get this done for my ZHP :cool
He's the one selling me the S54 ITB for my ZHP ;)

Of course it all depends on if my G.A.S. CCV Replacement kit clears the ITB . . .

If it does not clear then I won't be doing this mod. I would rather keep my G.A.S. CCV Replacement kit in place for my ZHP build so I will have to see . . .
EDIT: I won't be getting the S54 Throttle Bodies as they won't clear my CCV Replacement kit.

Intake manifold is removed for cleaning and a little modification. I am removing the rest of the OE CCV setup, will be doing the following while I have my intake manifold removed.
- Oil Filter Housing Gasket replacement
- TPMS retrofit
- vacuum line replacement as needed
- Engine Oil Temperature sensor replacement
- cooling system hard line replacement
- cooling system hoses replacement
- radiator removal/replacement
- expansion tank removal/replacement
- water pump removal/replacement
- thermostat removal/replacement
- ECS Tuning aluminum water pump pulley
- new belts
- clean the Idle Control Valve
- replace cable protector sleeves as needed
- replace intake manifold gaskets
- clean engine compartment using simple green
Lots of maintenance to do as a result of my expansion tank rupturing.

As part of my current maintenance plan and based on the discussion I had today with Botond I decided I will be purchasing this kit along with the rest of my cooling system refresh parts to do the cooling system refresh over the next weekend completing my maintenance and upgrade to my ZHP for the time being ;)
Seeing I have over 240k miles on this car and I don't know if the OFHG has ever been changed I feel it is a great time to do this maintenance as well as change out the VANOS oil feed line, engine oil pressure switch and engine coolant temperature sensor. Doing this maintenance with the intake manifold out will be so much easier so I'm getting a bunch of other maintenance items knocked out while doing the cooling system overhaul. :)

I have already compiled about $650 worth of parts to install on my ZHP for this maintenance period and have gone down that preverbal rabbit hole so to speak . . .
I have reviewed the scope of the work I am currently doing and this is what I'm looking at getting for the rest of the parts I will need to complete my current maintenance period on my ZHP:
- BMW Radiator Adjustment Screw - manual transmission radiator
- Radiator Offset Mount from Powerflex
- BMW Belt Drive w/ water pump and alternator pulley
- BMW A/C Belt
- BMW Set Belt Drive and pulleys
- BMW Engine Oil Filter Housing Gasket kit
- BMW Coolant Return hose
- BMW Radiator (Genuine OEM Part)
- BMW Heater Inlet Pipe
- BMW Coolant Pipe
- BMW Fuel Injector Installation kit
- Intake Manifold Nut (x7)
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20221006/fecb767adbb02e0394cc96ef86ab2156.jpeg
and also getting these gaskets before reinstalling my throttle body and intake manifold

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52408372087_baa1d74818_z.jpg
So all in, I will need an additional $880.38 + tax to purchase these parts so that I can complete my maintenance and get the ZHP ready for winter. At least my cooling system will be fresh and hopefully trouble free. I am also completing my TPMS retrofit now that my intake manifold has been removed. I have been meaning to get this done. I now have no excuses now that I have plenty of room to access the Mk60 module to make the connection. So this maintenance will run me close to $1500 in just parts to complete. I can only imagine how much I would have spent on labor charges to get all this work completed . . .

The OE CCV system has been completely removed from my ZHP. I'm now committed to installing my new G.A.S. CCV replacement kit once all my cooling system components and sensors have been replaced. Tomorrow I will be completing my TPMS retrofit since I need to access my Mk60 module plug to make the necessary connection into Pin 40 of that plug. Once this is complete the TPMS button on my center console switch panel will become functional and I will then have another factory feature in this ZHP :cool

No I did not. This is something I plan to replace but sometime in May/June time frame. I have already spent enough sourcing all the parts I have recently sourced. I am now about to buy a new starter and crank position sensor just because I have easy access to them now so I have to look at doing other items for later after my wallet recovers a bit. After all, I sourced pretty much quality parts, not OEM equivalent as I don't believe they are the same as proven to me by what the previous owner used when he did the cooling system refresh on this car using cheap OEM equivalent parts he sourced from his local NAPA store . . . SMFH . . .

My intake manifold has been thoroughly cleaned using full strength Simple Green and new intake gaskets replaced. I have never seen such a dirty intake manifold like what I have seen from this ZHP but it has been cleaned and looks much better now. Also replaced the Engine Temperature Sensor which is mounted at the rear cylinder head underneath the intake manifold. The OE part looked worse for wear and I'm glad to have changed this out while I had easy access.

My Intake Manifold after being cleaned with new gaskets installed and OE CCV deleted. [emoji41]
The electric fan has been removed and water pump pulley bolts loosened so when I take the belts off I can easily unscrew the water pump pulley from the water pump.
This week I plan to shave part of the front of my intake manifold where the oil filter housing is located so that when the time comes and I begin wrapping everything up after installing all my cooling system components, I can finish installing my G.A.S. CCV Replacement kit and call this maintenance done.
This is a learning experience for me in that I have never pulled the intake manifold off on any BMW I have owned and I have never done an extensive cooling system overhaul before. I have done cooling system refresh where I replaced the radiator, upper and lower radiator hoses, sensors and water pump/thermostat but never the entire cooling system hoses and hard line. When complete my cooling system should be solid as I sourced everything (BMW original parts) and the Stewart Water Pump from FCP Euro. It will be nice to have the lightweight aluminum water pump pulley from ECS Tuning and water pump cap installed as well. :)
Once this maintenance is all done I think I will be looking to do my power steering system next and GUIBO/center line bearing maintenance which still needs to be done and at that time install my Autosolutions SSK. I may take the lazy route and take my ZHP to Banchwerks in Providence and have them install my Bilstein PSS-10s coilovers and Ground Control Camber kit and be done with this. That way when the 2023 car season comes, the ZHP should be set up pretty nice...

Turns out the hose I need to complete my entire cooling system overhaul is no longer available (that's right! NLA) from BMW.
It is item #5 on the drawing as shown from RealOEM. I went to the dealer to see if there was any part number change or any possible cross reference to get this part and it just does not exist so for those of you out there looking to do a complete overhaul of all your cooling system hoses be aware this part will need to be built.
I will be building this part to ensure all my hoses are replaced as I am doing this overhaul and want to have all hoses associated with my cooling system replaced.

As I continue working on my ZHP, I'm inspecting components the previous owner used when he "refreshed" the cooling system he sourced parts for this car from his local NAPA store.
It is obvious he sourced the cheapest priced components and pictures below showing one of those cheap parts he used, in this case the thermostat, shows why you should source original BMW parts for a car of this caliber, even if these cars are 18 years old . . .

Thanks to Vas for supplying the part number for the final hose I needed to do my entire cooling system overhaul, I will begin the fun part of taking out all the cheap parts the previous owner used while refreshing the entire cooling system (radiator, upper/lower radiator hose, expansion tank, thermostat, water pump) and the OE hard lines and hoses beginning tomorrow morning. It is much nicer having a torx head bolt in perfect condition (like the one on the right of this picture) rather than using one that has been mangled up like the one on the left.
As I said back on my first post of this project thread, I'm restoring this car little by little as I continue working on her[emoji41]

I have never taken off an intake manifold on any car I have ever owned or replaced cooling system hard pipes and heater core hoses like I recently have on my ZHP. I was impressed by just how easy this job is to do . . . just time consuming if you want to do it right. At least everything used for this maintenance with exception of my Stewart Water Pump and ECS Tuning Aluminum water pump pulley are genuine OEM BMW parts :cool

You're Welcome! Looking Good!!!!!
How was the install?
The install was pretty much straightforward. For me the most difficult part of doing this install was shaving my intake manifold per directions on step #30 because it really does not tell you how much to take off. I had to look at this picture a few times because none of the other pictures showed this angle with the bottom part of the kit installed.
Anyway once I was done with this step, the rest was easy to do and it only took me about an hour at most to follow the install directions and get the kit installed on my ZHP since I already had everything apart. I'm impressed by the build quality of this kit and like that it is a much better solution over the OE CCV setup[emoji1417]

New coolant has been added to my ZHP and the car run to normal operating temps with radiator cap off so I can use the bleed screw and bleed the system and add more coolant as needed to refill the system. Once I had refilled the system I then adjusted cabin temps to 71 degrees and monitored my cooling temps.

Thanks fredo, it was a lot of work and it was rewarding to see everything thru to completion :)
It is amazing just what you discover as you begin tearing down your car to do something as extensive as this and realize there are a few more things that should be done while you have access such as thoroughly cleaning the intake manifold and intake ports of the motor. Then there are sensors and the list begins to grow . . . I learned a lot more about my ZHP doing this maintenance and look back knowing the work I had done was done right using quality parts and for me the best part was when I had a problem identifying a part I needed, I got the help I needed right here from forum members. There are a lot of good people here with lots of knowledge to share and that is a very good thing. :thumbsup

Road test has been completed this morning.
My ZHP has more pull/low end torque than it did before it's expansion tank ruptured necessitating the repairs and extensive cooling system maintenance that followed.
It's nice having a bullet proofed cooling system again with the car's complete intake path being thoroughly cleaned out, sensors replaced and new OFHG/VANOS Oil Feed Line installed along with a few notable upgrades. Nice having my ZHP back[emoji41]

Update: The next day after my road test I started my car and began smelling fuel vapor thru my center vents so I stopped to investigate the source of the fumes only to discover that my OE fuel hose had disconnected from my fuel rail line. I tried reconnecting the fuel hose and it would not reconnect.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52547118905_e4afb0a043_z.jpg
Apparently the plastic retainer "clip" on the fuel hose broke and the hose required to be replaced to restore my fuel system. The engine was also washed down to get rid of the fuel residue and my fuel injectors were all checked to make sure they were installed and secured correctly as part of this maintenance which was nice.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52546178527_3e00a2a345_z.jpg
This was an unexpected maintenance item but made sense since the fuel hose was OE and over 18 years old. I now have a fresh fuel hose in place. Also I discovered a nail in each rear tire so I had the tires patched/repaired and then remounted. When I picked up my car from this additional maintenance I added my G.A.S. 1.2 bar expansion tank cap to finish complimenting the other G.A.S. products I have in my engine bay [emoji41]

The Cylinder #3 issue came up as I was pulling into the street where I live and for the time being I got a new NGK spark plug and used a spare good used ignition coil I had stored in my garage for temporary repairs until I do the proper change out of the plugs/ignition coils in February 2023 when I do my VCG maintenance. I have already planned more work for the 2023 car season so I am looking forward to seeing how my planned projects get completed over the upcoming year.

I have the GUIBO, bolts and nuts to secure it to the drive shaft, the center line bearing and AutoSolutions SSK on hand for the upcoming maintenance
Also have extra brake fluid bottles unused for the brake fluid flush I am also doing as part of my upcoming maintenance. I will use BMW's rear diff fluid for this upcoming maintenance so I should be set for my final maintenance of 2022. :cool

On my way home I noticed my engine running a little rough and the SES light on my instrument cluster as I was near my home so I got my Diagnostic Tablet to run codes and found a P0303 code and Cylinder #3 misfire. Also noticed Ignition Cylinder 3 fault called out. I was able to clear the fault, restart the car and allow the engine to run until the SES light came back on and then shut off the engine and read the codes again to find P0303 Cylinder #3 misfire and Ignition Cylinder 3 called out so I will determine if the fault lies with a bad spark plug or ignition coil. I have had bad ignition coils in the past and have a full set of used, but good ignition coils I can use temporarily to get the car running again.
I'm tempted in replacing all the spark plugs now as I have been planning to do this anyway. Then after the New Year I will order a full set of Dinan ignition coils for my ZHP like these below :cool

Seems every year I have had this car I have done more than the previous year... I'm hoping this trend will continue as I would love to have this car set up into a reliable and well maintained example again... I still have more I need to get done though but the list is motivating me to do more. :)

For 2023 I have already begun working on a list of the many upgrades and maintenance I'm planning to do for my ZHP. Today I ordered new TPMS sensors to install in my BBS CH wheels so that they interface to my AVIN 4 head unit.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52599569757_95d108e5f4_c.jpg
They will get installed sometime in late Spring when I get tires for my BBS wheels. In the mean time my immediate focus is to get my AutoSolutions SSK installed, new pulleys installed and my rear diff flushed with new fluid this month. :)
EDIT: kit arrived yesterday.

Welcome to the club! I've been a member for >40 years, back when owners waved/flashed their headlights at each other & there was no interwebz to bring owners together!
I have been a CCA member for 10 years and then decided to let my membership lapse because of the childish response the BMW design team gave to the negative feedback regarding their desire for absurd oversized front grills, which in my opinion, look absolutely hideous. At the time I let my membership lapse, I just felt BMW has lost their way from producing driver-oriented cars to following other auto makers. This is how I have been feeling about the BMW brand and is my opinion. They used to lead the auto industry and today I feel they follow other brands instead of innovating and leading and my comment is not meant to stir opinions or emotions. I'm just sharing how I have been feeling about the new BMWs being produced. I renewed my membership this year because Octoberfest will be held not too far from where I live and for once I want to experience this event in person. As for keeping my membership, I will have to see . . . I am an E46 BMW owner for life kind of person so no matter what, I will always have an E46 BMW in my garage for the rest of my life.

Do I dare ask... given this I'm curious what the total is for everything you've done to your car since you got it :rofl
No you don't want to ask . . . but since you're asking . . .
I purchased my ZHP for $5,000 and have put in more than $10k into this car on top of the purchase price since purchasing it 3 years ago. I know I will be putting in more money into this car since it has been mistreated and neglected by its previous owners.
My goal for the work I want to do for this car:
- potential engine rebuild
- potential transmission rebuild
- adding an LSD to my ZHP
- UUC Corsa TSE3 catback exhaust
- full suspension overhaul (Bilstein PSS-10 purchased)
- full bushing replacement (including rear subframe)
- rear subframe reinforcement
- power steering overhaul
- potential steering rack replacement/overhaul
- refresh headliner/pillars/headliner covers
- full repaint of this car (keeping Mystic Blue obviously)
Keep in mind with my recent full cooling system overhaul, intake manifold cleaning, vacuum line replacement, OFHG maintenance, fuel injector service, replacement of fuel line to fuel rail, GUIBO/center line bearing maintenance, and CCV Replacement kit install, I have spent $4k on this maintenance alone.
My goal is to restore my ZHP to the level my M3 is at with upgraded parts/components to suit me so with the list above I will be looking at spending much more money on this car but it deserves to be owned by an enthusiast who will continue taking good care of this car. These are amazing cars to own and drive and still look fantastic in my opinion. Bottom line, I love having my ZHP as my daily driver.
Look at my project threads below and you will see for me it is not about "how much" I'm spending to set up my cars as much as it is the journey I have taken with each of my cars. This is how I always approach working on my cars as I have always enjoyed working on them, even if I find myself getting irritated by how poorly they have been taken care of/maintained by it's previous owners. At least this way I am making each of my cars better than what the previous owners have left them. Seeing my ZHP is my daily driver, it has taken priority over all my other cars as I want to make this car very reliable and well maintained for daily driver use.

I'm surprised it's only 10k, I've easily spent more than that and my car is nowhere near as nice as yours. I also had a friend that put more than that into a Saab, only for it to mostly work. I'd say you are in pretty good shape actually.

To be perfectly honest, I put in $10k in my first year of ownership and am probably much closer to $20k at this point but I'm not keeping track of "how much" I'm spending on my ZHP.
I know I will be spending much more money into this build before I am satisfied with where my car is. For me it is part of the fun watching a neglected car like my ZHP transform into a nice properly maintained car[emoji4]

I stopped keeping track a long time ago as well... I think if everyone kept track they would be surprised how much they spend. Something as simple as new tires every couple of years adds up to many thousands very fast.
Expensive hobby but it's what we enjoy spending our time and money on. That's why we're all enthusiasts here. :)
$10 here, $20 there turns into $100 here, $200 there...
I too am more than $10k into mine as well. I'm just glad that at the mileage mine has (I think it's similar to yours Charlie) I'm under Hagerty. I'd cry if someone totaled my car, I'd cry even harder getting paid out like $5k for a "high-mileage POS"

Well . . . it's going to happen . . . I just took out my "spare" BMW Performance Carbon Fiber strut bar where I have been keeping it and decided I will be swapping in this part when I finish my next maintenance on my ZHP. Between my carbon fiber Gruppe M intake, my DINAN carbon fiber engine cover, my G.A.S. CCV Replacement kit and this carbon fiber strut bar, my ZHP's engine compartment should be looking real nice :cool
If I end up sourcing the front DINAN strut bar then I will install this part instead of the BMW Performance front strut bar. I would prefer keeping the BMW Performance carbon fiber strut bar in pristine condition it currently is and have it in case the one being used in my M3 ever breaks... so far it has been solid for me.
https://live.staticflickr.com/1675/24603686821_e2a81507b2_b.jpg
I also have the DINAN rear strut tower brace I kept from my first ZHP. I decided I will be installing this brace when I install my Bilstein PSS-10 coilovers and Ground Control Camber Kit in Spring. Probably during Spring break time-frame. I will take a few days off so that I can dedicate my time to work on my car.
The front DINAN tower brace is in Botond's hands. I forgot to remove this part when I sold my ZHP. Looks like I will have to source a brand new one from DINAN before it becomes NLA.

EDIT: I took a nice drive this evening after completing all this work and when I got home turned off the car to get a bite to eat. After dinner I came out and started the car and got the "SES" light again but this time I knew what was causing this. The cause was a fault code 2F9A Environment temperature sensor communication. I expected this as I have not started fixing this issue. I have a wiring problem associated with this sensor that either needs to be replaced and spliced properly using solder and heat shrink tubing or the problem is in the connector which I can source from FCP Euro (there's a repair kit for this sensor) and fix this issue.

For those who have not done their VCG maintenance since owning their ZHP, I highly recommend doing this. My valve cover gaskets were hard as plastic and was leaking oil into the spark plug tubes causing my plugs to become fouled. I cleaned out each spark plug tube and gasket seating surfaces before applying the black RTV where it was needed and sealed everything up again. I took my time so that way I was not forgetting to do anything. Once the new plugs and coils were installed and the engine bay put back together I spent the weekend driving the car
Since this maintenance, my ZHP's motor seems to have more power and is much more responsive. Power delivery is smooth throughout every gear and the car idles around 600 rpm smoothly. This is something I should have done in my first year of ownership for this car but it is now complete. It is nice to see this ZHP coming along considering where it was when I rescued it. :cool
This is how my plugs looked after being pulled out (#6 far left to #1 far right)

Both my ZHP and M3 looked just like this one above and both cars had just over 100,000 miles.
Charlies ZHP might of been neglected but not the oil change intervals, as that valve train looks amazing.
If that's neglected, what do you call this?:blink

Thanks guys!!!! You all have no idea how much better your comments make me feel about the condition of my motor! I based my comments on the overall condition of my ZHP when I first began tearing into my car and starting her maintenance.... the brake fluid was so dirty that it looked like engine oil and that's where my impression of the care this car has been given came from... I have done a lot of work to this car and seeing your examples make me feel so much better. THANK YOU!

Charlie, I agree with other guys. It top end looks very clean for the mileage. I bet you are going to keep it the same way since you are changing the oil frequently.
Looking forward to see for coilovers installed.

Yeah, that's the plan. I would like to keep my ZHP motor healthy.
My new Bilstein PSS-10s will be getting installed on my ZHP tomorrow followed by a long distance road trip testing the new coilovers on Tuesday when I drive south to Morristown, NJ for a work trip. Once my work is complete, I will drive further south to Brett's home so I can add another nice item to my ZHP and catch up with a very good friend over the weekend. :cool

The kit the previous owner had installed was properly disposed of. I would NEVER RECOMMEND this kit to anyone. They were absolute junk.
EDIT: I was looking thru my project thread and realized I took delivery of these PSS-10's back on 28FEB2021 . . . and this is the day I finally got them installed. This is by far the longest I have delayed installing a mod that I really wanted to have on any car.

I did another thing for my ZHP tonight :cool
It is something my first ZHP had and is now something my current ZHP will also have... I will still blame Botond for this. ;)
I found this part in a discussion at the BMW E46 Performance Package (ZHP) Owner's Club Facebook page and one member there mentioned to me he had something he was taking off his ZHP and selling and I jumped on this since this part is now discontinued. Item has been purchased and will be shipped to me on Friday . . . no regrets buying this item. [emoji16]
Not having a bad start to the 2023 car season so far [emoji41]
When I return from my trip, I'm looking to get the following items[emoji16]
- carbon fiber DINAN engine cover
- new Michelin Pilot Sport AS4 rear tires for my Style 135 wheels
- getting new Michelin Pilot Sport AS4 tires for my BBS CH wheels
Then in June I am getting Quickjack 5000 for my garage[emoji41]

Part of the fun in rescuing this car is the restoration/rebuild knowing for me it is not about "how much" it would cost as it is how rewarding it is going to be to bring back a neglected ZHP into one that is well optioned/upgraded and is restored.

Sergy, as you have noticed . . . there are some mods I have also gotten for my current ZHP that I had on my Imola ZHP. Very observant :thumbsup
I really loved having them (Corsa TSE3 exhaust, Gruppe M intake, E90 hidden compass/homelink auto dim rear view mirror, my 19 inch BBS CH wheels, rear carbon fiber diffuser panel, and the OEM M3 side mirror retrofit I will be doing soon). Those are the elements I had that I decided I will replicate into my current ZHP as I really enjoyed having them.
There are other mods I have incorporated into my current ZHP build that I feel is an improvement over my original ZHP build in that I have incorporated the OEM M3 Gauge Cluster, G.A.S. CCV Replacement kit, the G.A.S. DISA kit, AVIN 4 head unit w/ BAVSOUND Speaker upgrade, and Bilstein PSS-10 coilovers w/ Ground Control Camber kit. I have more planned for my current ZHP build which will make this one even better than my first one. :)
There is always room for improvement. One thing I will also add to my current ZHP is an improved LSD from what I originally had from my first LSD. Still doing research but it will be an improvement over the other one. ;)

My Bilstein PSS-10 coilover install is officially completed today with the installation of my OEM sway bar end links.
The SGT Adjustable sway bar end links were too short and was not used.
Also installed a new set of rear Michelin Pilot Sport AS 4 tires on my Style 135 wheels.
Next will be installing Michelin Pilot Sport AS 4 tires and internal TPMS sensors on my BBS CH wheels so I can use them this summer[emoji41]
I recently learned I now have tie rods to replace so I will start sourcing Lemforder tie rods (both inner and outer) as well as new boots and hose clamps to secure the new boots.
I was told my control arms are still in great shape so I can wait till later this season to replace them. Making good progress on my project [emoji4]

The pictures taken of my ZHP cockpit on the left was taken today and the one on the right not too long after I rescued my ZHP in July of 2020. It has been improved little by little in the three years I have owned my ZHP :cool
The difference can and can not be seen between both pictures. What you can see is the gauge cluster is different and interior trim is different. On the right I had recently installed a full set of silver cube interior trim that I had on my last ZHP given to me by Botond. I have since put them away for the day when my interior is fully restored then I will reinstall my silver cube trim as the very last item for my interior refresh.
Since the July 2020 picture, I have retrofitted a lit M5 shift knob, retrofitted Shawn's Alcantara sedan seats w/ lumbar and upper side bolster support, retrofitted TPMS (BMW RPA) and electric rear sun shade, upgraded to LCM w/ sw4.5 and euro rear fog faceplate, installed the E90 hidden compass/homelink recessed grey clown nose auto dim rear view mirror, added the blue cruise control on/off switch on my steering wheel, and retrofitted the AVIN 4 head unit replacing the business CD Radio that came with my ZHP. Some changes are noticeable like my OEM M3 gauge cluster retrofit and others are more subtle like the TPMS/Rear Electric Sun Blind retrofit. All in all I am pleased with the progress and it all adds to the fun of driving this car as my daily. :)

I finally fixed my Ambient Temperature Sensor Fault by fixing the wiring issue that was with my car since purchasing it. Before I got this car one of the previous owner, whoever it was, did a half assed job splicing wiring rather than soldering it, use heat shrink, then wrap everything using electric tape. What I got was wiring that allowed moisture to set in causing shorts and the sensor to fail.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230507/aa011a56facec7bbdd48f386d920c248.jpg
The connector shown used crimp connections with unsoldered wires and had some corrosion at the plug sockets so I replaced this altogether. The wires pulled off these crimp connectors very easily and were also corroded so they had to be clipped off with new wiring exposed to make the proper repairs . . .
After I repaired the wiring and installed a new connector

Thanks Will! Looks like I will be overhauling my Power Steering system as well. My hoses to my power steering cooler need replacement and I might as well replace all hoses associated with this system as well as the reservoir for peace of mind. Car will be ready for its long-distance road trip to Florida then. :)
My Corsa TSE3 exhaust came in today so that is another item I will be installing sometime in June. I won't wait to install this as I had with my Bilstein coilovers. Car should be sounding amazing with this exhaust installed.
So I have the following maintenance/upgrades I want to complete before mid-July:

- overhaul the Power Steering system
- install my AutoSolutions SSK

This is the first I'm learning of that Turner triple baffled reservoir - would have opted for one when doing all that to the E39 daily driver.
I hear you - I'm a huge believer in the "buy once, cry once" philosophy & get the best possible option. I'm waiting for my Pilot Sports to wear down a bit more so I can have the wheels refinished before mounting new tires.
Always impressed with your progress!

Believe me, my wallet has been crying since October when I pulled the stops and began overhauling my cooling system, then went into everything using the "while you're in there . . ." mindset. I have shelled out more than $6k since October if I had to list a number and I realize for a car with over 247k miles I've spent more money on this car than the purchase price where most would not do this.
It is something about everything that makes up the ZHP why I continue working on it, improving this car and fixing all the shoddy work that has been done to her. In the end it is still worth it to me to save such a wonderful car from the scrapheap. [emoji57]
