    There's something we are missing as when you compare mine and John's:

    PJ97362 10/2005 vert wsmeyer
    PZ40412 03/2006 vert johnrando

    They clearly didn't go from J to Z in 5 months. That would equate to 1.6 million cars!

    William- I believe the PJ and PZ refer to something other than build order. I believe only the last 5 numbers are the build order. If you look in my original post, Dane added the info as to what the letter designations mean..

    To the others that categorized and sorted the thread, VERY cool, thanks... I was planning on that, but ya'll beat me to it!

    I was going by the image added to the first post that lists 12-17 as the 6 digit serial number.

    I wouldn't be surprised if they only used certain letters and omitted ones that could be confused with numbers.

    I have no idea either but the sedan's seem to be in order but the coupe/verts are all over the place.

    I forgot 5 is a US code too. I think I remember reading somewhere that early M's built a Spartanburg started with W, then they switched to the US code. Maybe it was still during Z3 production
